Birthday present for my brother that I planned years ago and failed to create with my resin printer, but now with an FDM printer I could safely make it a reality with PLA and PETG!

Proud to have figured out a way to get a glass smooth finish on an FDM print with gloss, which is way safer to work with instead of resin! Larger puddles take a long time to dry and never truly harden, but thinner layers (especially if the gloss is diluted with IPA) dry fast into a hard shell. So after 12h the gloss has reached a nice balance, where it has covered and hardened on the larger areas and all the extra has gathered into the crevices or on the bottom, that you can then scoop away and smooth with IPA and a silicone tip.

The larger layer stepping on the top and bottom still have to be dealt with first by sanding, melting or filling the areas, but as a cheap and easy fix on the rest of the model the gloss really works so much better than infinite priming and sanding. The surface still needs to be primed for the paint to have something to stick to and to help see which areas the gloss missed, but it's easier to clean the details back out from under the gloss than accidentally sand a tooth out or smthn.

Not sure of the durability or practicality for minis, but for display figures the gloss saves a lot of time and effort, and is so forgiving; Just rub some IPA in it and it starts moving again!

print shops should always do a single test print for free for every piece, I thought this was standard but I've only printed things once so far so maybe I got lucky w my shop. maybe your shop can order paper similar to yours?also yeah checking your uni's print room is smthn I was also gonna mention (it's v early rn) they're usually chill about letting alum and current students use the resources. Definitely a lower-cost option while getting a quality print.

there's a trick print shops can use where they'll print multiple copies on a single sheet of super large paper and trim excess off to reduce costs for you. If they CAN order your paper or will print on yours, see if you can find an XL version and ask if they'll do that. I got 2 prints per sheet for ~$200 at the time vs ~$400 for the same # of printed stuff.

All my local campus’ facilities are open to the public! A friend and I recently made DnD figures from their 3D printer. Some of their printers cost maybe a dime but sometimes the professors and librarians override it with their accounts. I’m sure they’re happy for Any use, it helps get them funding to keep those resources open.

Anyway, yeah I’ll have to call and ask if the print shop can do a test sheet, I’ll try to shove a few works into one sheet to see how they print. It’s still a steep cost for right now, though. After finding out my surgery will be covered I used most of my tax moneys to fix up the house and get a couple personal things. Aaarrgghhg I wanted to publish my website and get business cards but that’ll have to wait.

Hmmmm at the least I’ll see if I can print a couple on my own on campus and hopefully make enough from that to get back on track.

It’s not the kind of thing that can be explained to someone who’s never experienced it. A pull in Venoct’s chest— a thread that drags him forward, from the yokai world back into the midst of humanity. Some nights, it’s annoying; he has other things he could be doing. The inexplicable ties to the yokai watch are nothing but a distraction.

On nights like this, though, he should probably be glad it makes his job a little easier.

“This way, this way!” Springdale is covered in the thick, swirling fog that signals Terror Time— the air is split with the roar of an angry oni intent on eating whoever is walking through nightmares, and Venoct doesn’t have any time to assess the person he’s rescuing. All he can do is trust that ache in his chest brought him to the right person.

Keen eyes finally catch sight of the door that materializes in the dark; Venoct slides to a halt, nimble fingers catching on the ethereal frame and dragging the door open. There’s a flash of light, a pulse of energy, a sigh of relief from a voice he doesn’t know, and Terror Time dissipates.

All at once, the night is far too quiet. The air is crisp and clear as it invades his lungs, and the ringing roar of the nightmare oni has been replaced with the loud buzzing of cicadas in trees.

Even a seasoned yokai needs a moment to readjust after adrenaline-fueled escapes, so Venoct is caught up for a moment, chest heaving as he tries to catch his breath. A strange energy thrums through his body as well; he can’t usually say he’s nervous, but he also can’t remember the last time he interacted with a human. Besides, if Mckraken is scared of the person with the yokai watch, they must be very—

—pink? 

“You’re— not—”

“What you were expecting? Yeah, I’ve been getting that a lot lately.” Absently, you spin the dial on your yokai watch, the hands ticking rapidly as they spin. You don’t even sound winded, after that chase through the town, and Venoct tries to bury the baffled amusement that bubbles in his chest. The young man— well, the yokai— in front of you tilts his head and narrows his eyes. For yet another moment in his long unlife, Venoct is glad most people can’t see him. 

He doesn’t want to be seen next to you.

Venoct’s face scrunches up as his gaze travels your body. You’re very— well, pink, as he’d first noticed. And a lot shorter than he’d been expecting. And— a girl. Very much a girl. Mckraken is scared of this—?

“Are you going to keep staring, or did you actually need something?” Your voice bursts through his thoughts, and Venoct isn’t sure he likes the way his heart turns in his chest. He scoffs back at you, arms crossed, the serpentine heads on his scarf snapping vaguely at the air around him.

“You’re not the hero type,” he states plainly. His gaze pointedly narrows on your shoes— as bright as the rest of you, they glow whenever you take a step, and he can’t help but assume that might be what really set the oni off before the chase. “Just because you have the watch doesn’t mean you’re the kind of person I’ve been looking for.”

“Oh, shut up,” you snort back, planting your hands on your hips. “Yeah, you may’ve saved me this one time, but I seem to recall defeating Slimamander by myself.”

Venoct falls silent at that; no wonder the big, ugly yokai had come slinking back home the other day. And a girl did that—?

He must’ve taken too long to respond, because you’re turning on your heel and waving at him as you begin to walk. “Well, thanks for the help— I’m on a time limit, though.” You hold the yokai watch up in a way that almost seems like a challenge, the glass dome glinting in the moonlight. “I’m sure I’ll see you again. It looks like this thing attracts trouble.”

There it is again, that tug in his chest. Most yokai had assumed it was a big, important deal to feel such a draw to wherever the watch is on Earth; now that he knows it attaches him to you, though, Venoct isn’t sure how he feels about that “honor.” His heart hasn’t pounded this hard for centuries. “—I just saved you. Are you calling me trouble?”

“Only if it means I’ll see you again.”

tips for reading more books!!!!

thank u 4 asking!! not sure im the best person to come to for this BUT i will try my best

- if ur a person who struggles to focus one of the biggest things i think can help is having the book in multiple forms…. physical, ebook, audiobook, etc, so if theres smthn u really wanna finish but ur having trouble getting through u can switch between forms with whatever suits ur level of focus best at the moment (u can get free ebooks of almost anything through libgen and there r lots of audiobooks on youtube or tokybook.com)

- additionally dont be afraid of audiobooks!! i LOVE audiobooks bc i can read WHILE walking around which helps me focus better. i usually dont read the whole book that way, i alternate between print text and audio as it suits me

- this might not work for everyone but i also like reading multiple books at once, three at a time works well for me but i think it really depends on ur preferences. my opinion is u should read as many books at once as u can without getting overwhelmed bc i like being able to switch between them and it keeps me from getting burned out on one book when i feel like reading a lot in one day

- i always have at least one book im reading on my phone in case i ever dont have a book with me, and i think digital/ebooks is well suited for nonfiction or really sense text where u can only read in short bursts, because it’s easier to pick it up whenever and easier to keep ur very specific place in the book without having to start over at the beginning of a long page

- but above all ur reading for u and not for anyone else so in the end it doesnt matter how many books u read !! if ur having trouble with a book probably the best way to deal with it is just take a looooong break until u feel like reading it again OR. just not finishing it at all. which is also okay :)

read somewhere that you should get off your phone like an hr before going to bed but i’m usually reading fanfics then so i was thinking abt printing out fanfics.

main problem i see with that is formatting. i don’t want a printer paper per page, just smthn like half of one. but if you print double sided pages it doesn’t really line up

front side being red and back side being blue (those first two should be landscape not portrait but i don’t feel like going back n changing it :p. so if you print it like that and fold it hamburger style it just ends up being read/formatted like half of back page, all of front page, then other half of back page)

it goes kinda like that and idk the best way to get around it.

i could digitally format it in google docs so that the back,front,front,back turns out how i want but if i need to edit anything then the entire formatting would be fucked and it’d be really confusing jumping back n forth so i’d prolly get confused and print it wrong

i could make it so just one half of the front and one half of the back is printed then cut the bottom part off but that’d be wasting so much paper

and i don’t think i can just have it printed anywhere bc that’d be copyright infringement right? i mean im not selling them, they’d just be for personal use but idk

and i don’t wanna hand write them if i can avoid it. one fic i’ve been trying to figure out how to print is 60 pages long in google docs, two columns, 11pt arial, 1.15 spacing, landscape orientation. i’d lose my hand before i finished that shit.

kinda going back to the present list post, i think a toolkit is a really good idea! my stepmom got me one for last christmas (at least i think it was) and i fuckin love it.

i’m checking out of my dorm soon and we have to take everything out of our bathrooms (literally fucking everything) so i had to dismantle a tension rod soap rack holder and part of a little over the toilet cabinet. it’s dumb that we had to do that but holy shit the happy i got from doing the tasks. i had to unscrew four nails (real complex shit, i know) but i really liked doing it! like there was physical proof that i did that!!! holy fuck!!! i don’t get near that happy doing good on tests

idk just something about being able to do that was really validating to me. and i got to use my toolkit again!!

i asked my dad and stepmom if they could help teach me more &/or get more experience w tools n shit and they said yes! they built like half the furniture in their house so they know their shit. and they also said they’d help me learn how to cook more!

i love my mom and stepdad so fuckin much and couldn’t imagine growing up without them. but man did they not teach me many life skills :// what i did learn is what i actively asked about as i got older

I wouldn't consider myself "moderate" in any way, but I do suppose that that might depend on how that is defined outside of the US? Since the US is apparently wack when it comes to political party definitions compared to a lot of the rest of the world or smthn, if that makes sense.

Politically, I see myself as a leftist. Now, my ideal is definitely some form of communism (I haven't really figured out if it's any specific form of it), but getting there where I live within my lifetime seems like too big a goal at once. In order to get to the point where the next generations may reach that future, I believe the first step should be something we believe might could reasonably be achieved or get quite near to within our lifetimes. A step at a time sort of thing.

I have no real hopes as of yet that the US will achieve any form of communism within my lifetime. Even if we attempted to throw some form of revolution, I doubt it would result in communism. I mean, the government literally has all kinds of things that could literally kill uprisers in their tracks. I think such a revolution would risk a massacre. We've seen how the police and military have no qualms against killing people who disagree with them.

So to get more to the point, my ideal is communism, but my practical goal is... I believe the term is democratic socialist? There's so many political terms that I get confused, but basically if you've ever watched Hannah&Jake (who used to run "The Bible Reloaded") or ActualJake (Jake's own account), those two are good references for what politics I believe in.

Whilst I wouldn't mind being educated more on your worldview and the different types of communism, anarchism, and how those two could work together, my ADHD does make articles hard to read. If you have any recommendations in audiobook or youtuber forms though, I'd definitely consider it.

... A Special Interest, you say? Well you've come to just the right fuckin place!

Occasionally, I run a "show" on my twitch (I guess it'd technically be sorta like a video podcast?) where fellow ND people come on, and for as long as they want they can infodump and rant their hearts out to me about their special interests, hyperfixations, passions, etc. Some guests do powerpoints, some just write themselves an outline to follow, some show me physical stuff if they want (like the "3D Printing" guest who showed me their prints), or it could be just a free form talk, or really whatever you want! It doesn't particularly matter.

The show typically runs up to (but doesn't have to be) 4 hours per show, but I welcome repeat guests!

You have to have a mic, but you do not have to have a camera on if you don't want to (I don't show my face myself).

I'm trying to edit the previous "episodes" to upload to youtube, it's just taking forever since they're long lol

But they're a lot of fun to do!

And trust me, it's not annoying to me to hear others infodump. It's the point of the show! I looooove hearing people passionately talk about shit! Their enthusiasm tends to rub off on me, so it can be a ton of fun to me!

Episodes I've had so far: History of Opera (part 0, lost episode), 3D Printing, History of Opera 2:Electric Boogaloo (a 2-part remake with much more info), and a type of Vision Disability (I forget the name of the specific one)!

The way it works is through Discord call usually, but I'm also fine with Zoom, Skype, Hangouts, etc!

Hey this isn’t meant to be confrontational or any kind of critique or anything, just a truly genuine question out of curiousity and what not. With works like finish line, where it’s a complete au of the Batman, but the whole Something Happened to Jason thing is included, do you ever worry about balancing the risk of like victim blaming in a sense? Like I do think there’s this unfortunate idea of Jason being to blame for his death, which we’ve scene parroted in canon even at times by certain characters, but also an unfortunate number of fans themselves seem to think Jason was reckless or impulsive or did something to make his death happen, rather than dying as a hero Child protecting his mother (as he finally argues in print in task force Z). But like in finish lines it’s written that he sort of disobeyed Bruce and Dick, ignored their warnings, and acted in a manner that could be seen as reckless or impulsive solely for the thrill of it, which sort of toes that line? Again, not a critique, sort of more of a writing question to balance for my own ideas. Like is that smthn you are concerned about and try to balance, is it less of a concern, is it not a concern with au works?

I honestly don't think I've ever intentionally thought of Jason's death in this way when writing. Probably because I don't see his canon death as his fault and I write out of that mindset. He was a child who was betrayed and failed by multiple adults, in simplest terms. And I think in my fantasy AU, his death has similar beats. He, a child, tried to save someone but it turns out to be a trap.

I think context matters for Finish Line because Jason was a successful driver in the middle of a race. So while his coaches are giving advice, he's in a high stakes situation where he ultimately has to make a judgment call based on his own ability and experience. It's probably not the first time he went against their advice and likely succeeded in other circumstances. At the end of the day, he is the driver. Yes, he stated that he wanted to push his limits, but I think it's less for thrill and more because he genuinely believed he could make it past this other driver crowding him. Either way he made a split second call with the information he had. And most importantly to me, his family doesn't blame him or Duke for their crashes and instead rally around them. Of course, this is all informed by my point of view which is that Jason isn't at fault for his canon death.

I think AUs are fun because you can try different things. With Finish Lines I was more concerned with the impact the crash had on Jason so it ended up unintentionally toeing the line depending on the reader's interpretation. I think that's okay since AUs explore an alternate world and altered relationships. For your writing, Anon, it really depends on what you want to come across. Do you want the reader to have room for interpretation? Do you want them to leave with a firm understanding of Jason's role in his death? If it's important to you and the story you're telling then it's okay to pay more attention to balancing that or making it clear to the reader. And most importantly, write what you enjoy and what makes you happy!

tbh I'm considering opening up a Patreon Mostly bc the number one way to wrangle my ADHD brain into doing something is to have an actual deadline to do it by but also bc i feel like it would be a great way for me to be able to offer cheaper (sketch) comms/monthly request type things and post full speed paints.

Besides the cheaper comms and some polls I don't suspect a lot would change about this blog, progress updates would be posted to both sites and while Patreon would get to see the final piece in its full uncompressed glory, the paintings would still be posted here at the same time they are there.

and maybe down the road a print club would be possible. with tiers based on the size of print received.

Which, tbh, the tier idea is only appealing to me bc my friend got nice glossy business cards a few days ago and the idea of offering Really mini prints on a business cards as a monthly Patreon reward is just, Exceptionally funny to me. I Will package it as though it's a real print, cardboard protection slip and everything.
