Gotham, the Fox TV series about a young James Gordon, an even younger Bruce Wayne, and the origin of Batman's rogues' gallery that debuted in 2014, has always faced an uphill climb. Whether it was something as complex and nebulous as the struggle to find its voice (and audience) or something as simple and specific as not being able to say the word "Joker," there were always challenges, both within the show's control and beyond its grasp.
But, after five seasons, over 100 episodes, a series of gang wars, an asylum that creates supervillains, countless shouts at the mirror, dead parents galore, rocket launchers, fear toxins, ice rays, flamethrowers, and a city under siege, that climb is ending.
Gotham makes its final run in 2019. The night after the last day of filming, the cast and crew, still processing their own feelings, assembled at New York's Paley Center to take the first of their last bows before a packed house of fans with feelings of their own after watching the season premiere, "Year Zero."
One of those feelings could most certainly be frustration. While Gothamwrapped production for the last time, The CW aired its Elseworlds series, which included, among other things, their own take on Gotham city. I mentioned this fact in passing to one of Gotham's producers (whom I'll spare from naming) who pointed out that, in fact, someone from the Arrowverse asked to borrow Gotham's bat signal for the Elseworlds three-night event.
The answer to that request, if you're curious, was "no."
The room above the theater where press, cast, and crew assembled before the episode screening was not filled with sadness or frustration, though. If anything, the more intimate affair mirrored more or less exactly the primary emotion fans saw a few hours later: gratitude.
While Chris Chalk (Lucius Fox) joked about his idea for a TV series about food tasters and David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne) showed off photos of a box the Gotham crew had assembled for him of his belongings (as though he'd been fired from an office job), there was an overwhelming feeling of gratefulness. The only sadness is that there won't be more.
I asked Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot) who he wished he'd had the chance to work with more during five seasons of Gotham and his answer, without skipping a beat, was "Sean Pertwee," who plays Alfred Pennyworth. Elaborating, Taylor said, "He's one of my best friends. It's like we couldn't be from more different places, and then you find each other in this weird circumstance. Yeah. So he's the one."
This is a feeling that you can see mirrored both specifically about Pertwee, but also in more generally. Camren Bicondova has utilized Instagram throughout her time on Gotham, sometimes speaking about how the family she found on the show got her through the highest and lowest times in her life. After the screening of "Year Zero," Bicondova spoke about how her show family was there for her in a way that she felt her actual family should have been but wasn't.
And you can see the tendrils of lasting friendships among team Gotham. Take it from someone who has stood in a lot of press lines to interview talent whose shows are ending. Sometimes you ask people for favorite memories and you get a blank stare. Gotham isn't like that.
I asked Cory Michael Smith (Edward Nygma) what stuck out in his mind as his best on-set moment, especially in this final year. There were many, he said, but he singled one out in particular: "Since Erin's standing next to me, Erin [Richards, who plays Barbara Kean] directed episode 512, which is not the last episode, but it is the last one we shot," he explained. "And I shot a short with her in March or early April, to kind of help her get ready. I worked for free, worked my ass off. It was a grueling experience, but we did this thing so she could get ready and prepare herself to take this on. And I'm really proud that I got to be a part of that journey for her and getting her to a place where she could present this thing and get an offer to direct an episode."
"Reunions will be very happy," he adds.
But first, there's Season 5 to contend with. It's hard to reveal more of what was said in interviews without giving things away, but, here are some spoiler-light tidbits.
Oswald has a dog this season. The dog's name is Edward. Taylor said he "loved every second of it and Smith acknowledged that the dog gives Penguin "loyalty that I couldn't."
Erin Richards has been hearing the same question from fans since the beginning: will Jim and Barbara have a child somehow despite their conflict. Richards said "we're definitely moving towards a situation," in our interview but both she and Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon) admitted in the Q&A afterward that some mistakes will be made.
And, of course, you may have heard rumors that there will be death on the horizon. There's at least one major (likely permanent) death coming up very soon. Without giving it away, one of the cast members referred to the change as "really difficult" because of the tightness of the real-life friendship. But, for that cast member's character it is also a "helpful and necessary momentum change that will propel them towards what we see halfway through the season."

Part 1
Pale green light shown through my small studio apartment making me whine and roll over in my white blankets. Fluttering my eyes open, I pushed my red hair out of my face and lifted my body up to where I could somewhat wake up. I didn't want to get up but surprisingly today was my first day at my first job since I've moved to New York. I was finally a makeup artist for Fox Studios, I've dreamed of this day since I was 12 and started getting into the whole effect makeup. For this to happen to me is like a dream come true. Apparently the last makeup artist couldn't handle the stress or something like that, I wasn't given much information since it's confidential. I'm just glad that they left because if it wasn't for them I don't think I would've gotten this job. I lifted the blankets off my pale body and grabbed my black rimmed glasses of my nightstand before placing my feet onto the cold hardwood floor making a cold shiver run up my legs causing goosebumps to appear. Walking over to my dresser I pulled out a light blue shirt, a knee length black skater skirt, along with white knee high stockings. I set the outfit onto my bed and headed to my kitchen to put a pot of coffee on to broil before heading to my bathroom. Opening the door to the small Pearl colored bathroom and stepping in I shut the door and opened the door to the cupboard behind the door that held my towels and washcloths, grabbing a towel and setting it down on the sink counter. I slipped off the large tee from my petite body and turned to shower, turning the water on a warm temperature. I hopped out of the shower and walked over to the sink, wrapping the towel around my body and made my way back into the room that held my bed. I unwrapped my body and wrapped the towel around my hair before I changed into my outfit of the day, I decided to put on a little bit of makeup and walked over to my dresser, pulling out my light matte foundation and my tube of mascara. Feeling like my appearance was somewhat decent for my first day at my new job I walked over to my kitchen and made me a cup of coffee.
After I poured me a cup of coffee I made my way over to my cabinets and pulled out a box of blueberry flavored poptarts. Opening a pack I slipped them into the toaster and pulled the trigger down. I removed the towel around my hair and made my way back into the bathroom to blow dry my hair. Plugging in the blow dryer I opened my mirror and pulled out my blue comb/brush and brushed through the knots in my hair. I turned the blow dryer on and proceeded to dry my hair, leaving it puffy and natural. Once my hair was done I made my way to the kitchen and grabbed the poptarts out of the toaster, seeing as though I didn't have the time to sit and eat them in my kitchen. Time for my first day!
Driving my blue 1997 Corvette through the studio's garage I drove up to the second floor and pulled into the closest parking spot nearest to the elevator. I turned off the engine and just sat there for a moment, "Oh my god, just breathe. It's your first day so don't fuck it up. For the love of god please don't fuck this up! You've worked to hard for this." I whispered to myself while gripping the leather steering wheel cover. Taking a deep breath I opened my door and stepped out, leaning back in and grabbing my hand bag before pulling my body out and shutting the door while hitting the lock button twice, hearing my car beep therefore indicating my car was securely locked and the alarm was set. As I made my way over to the elevator doors I hit the 'going up' button and waited for the doors to chim open. I walked through the doors and hit the 'L' button making it light up, "Hold the door please!" I heard a feminine voice holler across the garage. I placed my hand in between the elevator doors, holding the doors for the unknown voice. Running towards the elevator shafts was none other than Morena Baccarin, "OHMYGOD!!" my brain screamed. "Thank you so much!" Morena breathed as she stepped into the small space with me. "Oh uhhh no problem." I said barely above a whisper, my body being too shocked to speak any louder. Morena turned and eyed me courasly before asking, "Are you new? I haven't seen you here before." Placing a strand of red hair that was blocking part of my face, "Oh, uhh yeah I'm the new makeup artist for uhhh Gotham." I spoke while trying not to stutter. I had a real anxiety problem and so that also came with a seriously bad stutter. "Nice! I'm Morena." Morena stated while extending her right hand to me. "I'm D-D-Diana," I stuttered while mentally slapping myself across the back of my head. 'Get a grip Diana!' my mind hollered at me. "Well it's a pleasure to meet you Diana. Would you like me to show you to the makeup room, it's not far from where I'm heading? In fact I think it's just down the hall." She offered with a bright genuine smile. She seemed really nice, I think this day might go pretty well. "That would be l-l-lovely, thank you." I spoke before turning and facing the elevator door after hearing a ding, indicating that we had reached the main floor. As the elevator doors opened I stepped out and waited for Morena to walk ahead of me. "Gotham's set is 32B, so it's kind of a long walk but it's worth it. Trust me, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking," She laughed while looking over her shoulder to show that she was talking to me. I couldn't hold back the smile that was plastered across my freckled face. First I get my dream job and Morena Baccarin was escorting me to my new work space, I still can't believe this is happening to me. We walked for a while, passing so many large crops and actors before we approached a building with the letters "32B" was in bold black letters on the side. I still had the biggest smile on my face when Morena turned to me, opening the door "Here we are!" She exclaimed as she walked in. I held the door open after she walked in and making my way in after her. Once inside my eyes couldn't focus on one thing, everything was just so.....beautiful and breathtaking. Following Morena to my new work space I saw so many props that I recognized from past episodes and so many different actors hanging out and talking with one another. I couldn't help but picture me as one of them in the future, not an actress or anything but just someone that people wanted to hang and talk with. Sad I know. but what can I say, I'm a loner. "Well here you go." Morena said after taking me down a few hallways and turns before stopping in front of a door with the sign 'Makeup room' in bold maroon letters next to it. "Thank you so much!" I told Morena, making her smile. "Oh no problem! I hope you have a great first day and I hope to see you around! Bye Diana." She spoke while pulling me into a hug before turning and walking down the hallway to what I'm guessing is her changing room. 'Okay it's just your first day at your dream job Diana, breath and go!' I thought while taking in a deep breath and pushing the door open. Here goes nothing!
Hopping back into my Corvette after 8 hours of non-stop training, I couldn't wipe the small off my face. I had probably the best day of my life, I got to meet so many different grew members that I'm pretty sure I turned a different shade of red because of my anxiety but other than that I had a blast! I learned so many different ways to do effect makeup and I got to meet Camren Bicondova, David Mazouz, and Sean Pertwee! I can't wait until tomorrow! I wonder who I'll meet then! I turned on the engine, pulled the car into reverse, and headed out of the larger studio garage. After pulling out of the studio and way from Fox Studios, I made my way down Wall St and towards the highway and headed towards my apartment complex.

Selina Kyle || Catwoman || 19 || Human || Rank 1 || Camren Bicondova
✘ Catwoman is OPEN.
“Bad luck. That’s what happens when a black cat crosses your path, right?”
BIOGRAPHY:
Selina Kyle was raised in a rough home, her father was an abusive drunk, her mother was a distant woman who would rather spend time with her cats than her family. As an adolescent Selina took gymnastics and fighting lessons, not only as an extra-curricular activity but to be able to escape the domestic violence at home. One day after returning home from school she found her mother had killed herself, this traumatized her but even worse, her father came to resent her even more because as days went on she looked more and more like her mother.
Eventually, her father surcame to alcohol poison, Selina called the police but before they could arrive she packed her bags and left. There was nothing there for her anymore. Selina lived on the streets for years, she resorted to petty thievery and sometimes even prostitution to make ends meet. As Selina grew older she quietly dropped her other hobbies and became a cat burglar, stealing jewels, diamonds and anything else she could get her paws on. One night on a job stealing a priceless totem, a hooded ninja like figure took the treasure for herself. Selina chased the figure and once she was cornered, the ninja revealed herself as an agent of A.R.G.U.S. who wanted Selina to attend an academy for gifted youth. Flattered and impressed by the agent’s proposal she accepted the offer.

This year’s New York Comic Con panel for Gotham was more emotional than most. With one shortened season left, you can tell the actors feel like they’re leaving something special behind. Camren Bicondova especially spoke of how the cast has become like her family. She and David Mazouz have grown up on this show, and the adult actors have been a part of their lives. Even to the point where Chris Chalk helped Bicondova set up her health insurance. (Though Chalk protested that Bicondova made him sound like the oldest man in that sentence.) Gotham has come to mean a lot to this cast over the last five years, and they’re going to miss it just as much as we are.
But we’re here to get a glimpse of what the final season will look like. The answer: Very different from anything Gotham’s shown us before. The fifth season, premiering sometime in early 2019, contains multiple time jumps. As an adaptation of both the “No Man’s Land” and “Year Zero” arcs from the Batman comics, the finale will pick up more than a year after the events of Season Four. After establishing what Gotham becomes, it’ll jump back to a few months later to show how we got there. They’re really packing a lot into this 10-episode season of TV.
When we come into Season Five, the government has disavowed Gotham and left it to its own devices. Jim Gordon is maintaining a safe zone around the GCPD, and the major villains at play have divided the rest of the city into their own territories. Penguin is in full war profiteer form, controlling the munition supply in Gotham, selling to all sides. Barbara has used the Sirens to create a completely man-free zone in Gotham. Showrunner John Stephens said we’ll see her go through one more transformation before the series is over, and promised it would be fitting for the character. “Erin (Richards) is going to crush it. It’s uplifting and bloody,” he said.
The Riddler was one of the victims/culprits in a mutual stabbing between himself and Lee when we last left them. At the beginning of the season, Cory Michael Smith said, Ed Nygma is unsure of everything around him. That’s not an acceptable position to be in for him, so we’ll find him desperately searching for some kind of patter to explain how his world got the way it is. He eventually takes over his own territory, which Smith describes as “chillin’ in the library.” Stephens assured the audience it’s much more exciting than that.
The biggest question on everyone’s minds though is what happened to Selina. She met a tragic Killing Joke-inspired fate last season, and had to be rushed to a hospital outside of town while Bruce stayed behind. Bicondova says that sends her to a dark and suicidal place. “We find her in a place we’ve never seen her before. The Selina we’ve all known for the last four seasons goes completely out the window,” she said. “No longer is she this really tough strong person, but she’s this lonely, depressed young woman. Throughout the season, we see her struggle with that.” Bruce’s actions, it sounds like, won’t help much either. Mazouz said Bruce will have to decide what he’s willing to give up to get the old Selina back. And not everyone will like what he chooses.
Even with all that going on, the show will still find time to introduce new villains. That includes what Stephens referred to as their worst-kept secret: There is an episode titled “I Am Bane.” Warner Bros. is finally letting Gotham use one of Batman’s most iconic villains. By name, even. “We find if you ask and plead and beg enough, and they find out your show isn’t going on anymore, they let you do it,” Stephens said. Bane will have a different origin story on Gotham than fans have read in the comics, but it still leads to the same place. The cast also teased a confrontation with Alfred. Bane is going to break Alfred’s damn back.
He’s not even the only villain. Though Stephens repeatedly debunked the rumor that this season would introduce King Snake (that apparently was never in the plans), he teased another villain joining the fray. Jeremiah is getting a girlfriend. Assuming you know which Villain Jeremiah is, the identity of his girlfriend should be obvious, though they never came out and said the name. “He has a somewhat deranged girlfriend who dresses in a multicolored fashion. They don’t have a healthy relationship, but there’s a meeting of the minds. She hits people and she likes rollerskates,” Stephens said. It doesn’t get more obvious than that, puddin’.
With all these villains running around, it might sound like there’s no way Gotham City can be saved. That’s kind of the point. It can’t be, and it’s not going to be in these 10 episodes. That’s always been the nature of this show. Gotham tracks the downward spiral of the city, Mazouz said. It’s always been about how the city gets to a point where someone like Batman is needed. To that end, this season will also see Bruce meet his first bat and Stephens promised that it will end with another time jump. “The series finale takes place 10 years in the future, so we can have one character arrive,” Stephens said. “Someone with pointy ears
 who’s not a villain.”
We spoke with the cast and crew after the panel, and Stephens told us exactly what it was like to wrap up this big violent story in only 10 episodes. “A lot of these [villains], when you only have 10 episodes, there are a lot of characters we wanted to bring in. We really wanted to do a Ventriloquist episode, but it just got squeezed out. We didn’t have time to get everything in.” he said. That’s a shame because I bet Gotham would have done a truly horrific take on the Ventriloquist. “We just got rid of a lot of stuff. Rather than trying to cram in everything we wanted. I kinda thought we’d get 16 (episodes). So I just kind of jetisonned a bunch of episodes
and really focused on what the core story was we were going to tell. So I don’t think it feels rushed right now.”
Stephens said they always knew the show would end with Bruce Wayne putting on the cowl. But the idea to adapt No Man’s Land for the final season came about in Season Three, though at that time they didn’t know which season would be the last. “When it looked like we might be on the bubble at the end of Season Four, I said, ‘well, let’s go ahead and blow the bridges at the end of Season Four to make it more of a cliffhanger so Fox might want to pick us up for another season,'” he said. Well, it worked.
One thing the cast spoke of a lot was how much they enjoyed shooting in New York City. While it’s true they live in Los Angeles, shooting Gotham in New York just felt right. Gotham, after all, is New York City. Donal Logue doesn’t even know what they would have done if they had shot in LA. “We shot in so many incredible locations, good and bad,” Logue said. “What’s amazing about New York is it’s not always thumbs up incredible, sometimes it’s tough and that’s Gotham. We shot in some very difficult places. We shot at a hospital in Staten Island for Arkham, and it’s still an active psychiatric hospital. I remember one night at about three in the morning, it was freezing. We were shooting outside and I looked up to the fifth story, and I saw a window and I saw this silhouette of a person watching us. It was just so stunning and heartbreaking. We shot in some heavy duty places. If I tell you the stories, they’re pretty dark.” It makes sense, since Gotham is a dark show on its own. It sounds like a lot of that had to do with the locations the scenes were shot in, and what was going on around the actors at the time.
One character who goes very dark this season is the Penguin. Earlier, it was teased that this season we’ll see the Penguin start to look more like the character we know from the comics, top hat, monocle and everything. Robin Lord Taylor told us a bit about the transformation. “It’s not like I haven’t been playing the legitimate Penguin, but there’s something about seeing him the way he’s been drawn in the comics
is so validating. It’s a stamp of approval and it’s an amazing responsibility we’re so excited to have,” he said.
Taylor teased that the costume isn’t the only way the Penguin of the show starts acting like the Penguin of the comics. “The story we’re telling is about how Gotham City corrupts these people and it destroys love. It literally destroys love. So when we go 10 years into the future, I want people to see the monster. I want them to see the supervillain. I want all the sympathy that people had to be erased, and I want him to be the supervillain we all know from the comic books. If you’ve read any of the more recent stories, he does some of the most vicious, awful things. You almost could not imagine this Penguin that I’m playing in Gotham to ever even conceive of some of the things he does in the comic books. But by the time we end, he will be that monster,” Taylor promised. His Penguin has done some pretty terrible things, but up to this point, he’s somehow remained scrappy and endearing. It’s going to be hard to watch that go away.
The final season of Gotham is going to be bittersweet for the cast and fans alike. We get to see everything we’ve been waiting for since Season One, but it’s hard to say goodbye to characters we’ve come to love and love to hate so much. At least it sounds like they’re going out with one hell of a party. The cast teased no end of surprising alliances as the citizens of Gotham try to survive after the government disavows the city. People who hate each other with a deadly passion will be forced to work together, and really that has always made for some of the show’s best moments. And yes, Cory Michael Smith confirmed that Penguin and the Riddler’s paths will cross again. Their relationship was by far my favorite part of the last season, so you know I’ll be glued to the couch.
