Stage 3: the pilot announced it was 43°C (109.4F) in Delhi as we landed.

There was barely an immigration queue for foreigners with e-visas, the agent who stamped me in was bizarrely attractive (not that immigration agents can't be hot, it's just not usually their defining feature, especially when middle-aged). I loitered a bit in the arrivals hall and took out some cash before enacting my plan to take the airport metro down one stop and walk to my hotel. I fended off the lone cabby who complimented my hairstyle and made an unsuccessful go at convincing me my hotel wasn't near the metro. I managed the metro security and ticket-buying largely because I'd watched an 'intro to Hindi' video in which the teacher warned that he who attempts to queue nicely in India will be waiting for an eternity. I loitered in the metro station when it became clear that finding the hotel was NOT as easy as google maps might have indicated (on account of an intervening construction site). I made a confused loop back to the entrance before my GPS finally deigned to cooperate, but a tuk tuk driver had already smelled tourist blood in the water and started following me. I told him I was walking "to see the world" and "have an experience". Either baffled or convinced I was insane, he gave up.

My hotel had been around the corner all along, I got a bit misgendered while checking in, and felt out of place in a 5 star establishment with my backpack and dusty sneakers, but they did confirm my reservation, take my money, and give me a room key. I had added on all meals, to save myself having to go looking for sustenance in a new land after a long flight and this is where the real delight began: dinner was a buffet, and perhaps I was making a fool of myself (sometimes there's no getting around this stage) because the waiters came to help me, but eventually I had eaten so many amazing starters, curries, naan, and desserts that I thought they would have to roll me back to my room. I had warned myself not to set my expectations with Bollywood movies but the dining room singer did perform Ikk Kudi from Udta Punjab...

Tomorrow it's back to the airport, but today's been alright.

Back to the Minnesota State Fair, and with some unlikely company as well

In driving ourselves (that's Huckleberry Hound and yours truly) to set up a base camp of sorts at the Minnesota State Fair for another of our annual presences thereof, little were we aware that the Hair Bear Bunch, by way of their Volkswagen Westfalia camper van (as used on their mating season road trips), would also be staking a presence there as well. Even if it required advance reservations, given that the Minnesota State Fair's camping area is bound to fill up quickly.

And passing through the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant essentially (in particular along US 169 between Mankato and LeSueur) heading from Okoboji to the Twin Cities via US 71 and Minnesota 60 up to Mankato (with that sharp turn of sorts at St. James), with the Hair Bears close behind our motorhome, anticipation seemed to dominate about all the "on-a-stick" foods to be had, for one.

"Snag," Huckleberry Hound remarked, "how many corn dogs do you think we'll eat between us during the fair?"

"Or, for that matter," added I, "how many nearly-foot-long hot dogs?"

"Why do you phrase it 'nearly foot-long,' Snag?"

"Huck ... it's about truth in advertising. The hot dogs in question are about ten and a half inches' length."

"And I assume there's probably some foot-long corn dogs as well" was how Huckleberry rejoindered that last exchange.

Meanwhile, with the Hair Bear Bunch, you can just imagine what that ursine trio was snacking on without managing to risk causing a traffic mishap from loss of steering wheel control. (We were to learn later that cheese curls were the snack of choice, alongside some Coke Zero Sugar. Square Bear admitted that the taste thereof was a bit on the "sweetish" side in contrast to Pepsi Zero Sugar.)

By the time afternoon came about, with the last of the setup at the Minnesota State Fair still well underway and our getting into our campsites--a light shower of rain started to become evident, pushing back the full setup by some measure. Yet as if luck would have it, our motorhome was just a short walk from the site that was assigned the Hair Bear crew, who were reminded of the presence of Steichen's Grocery and Deli in case they risked running out of groceries or other needs like cleaning supplies without leaving the Fairgrounds.

And you'll never guess who decided to also make themselves evident at the Minnesota State Fair Campground, even if being in the company of a few other exhibitors and visitors wasn't fascinating enough. But that's for tomorrow, when the Great Minnesota Get-Together gets going seriously.
