Campinas Ch F: Tristan Boyer def. Juan Pablo Ficovich 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP official website
The slight dip from T. Boyer in the second set was caused by the inconsistent hitting, where his forehands and volleys were the most vulnerable shots as J.P. Ficovich's strokes passed by. As a result, the latter successfully absorbed some rhythm in the second set before T. Boyer regained his forehand winners in time to finally break back and take the title in the second set. As a result, T. Boyer converted 5 of his 9 break points even though the Argentinean converted 100% of his 3 break points.
Besides, T. Boyer also had more solid service games throughout the match. Scoring 2 aces than J.P. Ficovich's 0, the American won 10% more first serve points with 70%, which helped him navigating some pressure points on his serve despite the slight dip in the second set. Somehow, he only double-faulted once throughout the match, where he had the slight edge on his second serves by winning 53% of his second serve points, 2% more than J.P. Ficovich throughout the whole match.
This marked T. Boyer's second Challenger title since the Merida Challenger earlier this year, propelling his rank to 159 live upon the conclusion of the tournament. Their next tournament will be the Curitiba Challenger, where the American will face wild card Wilson Leite in the first round, while J.P. Ficovich will face Santiago Rodriguez Taverna in the first round. This could be a neat start, but who knows what comes ahead for the week!

J.P. Ficovich initially built on from his stellar second set by breaking early to 1-0 due to a volley error from T. Boyer that set up the former's break point outside of the forehand errors, followed by a consolidation to 2-0. The American kept in touch with some service game holds, but he pressed more from the lines before his forehands started to make more damage, with an opportune winner to secure the break-back to 3-3.
Subsequently, T. Boyer held his serves to 4-3 despite J.P. Ficovich's backhand pass to force the deuce at that game. Somehow, the American's aggression got into the latter through his forehand pass, which occurred after a +1 error from the Argentinean to create his break point before a forehand down-the-line winner converted it to 5-3. As a result, T. Boyer earned his chance to serve for the match, which he succeeded (6-3) to win his second Challenger title of the year.

However, as aggressive as T. Boyer started the match with, J.P. Ficovich benefited from the former's consistency being questioned, which led him to a possibility to shift the moment. After 3 consecutive holds, the former's close-call failed volley paved the way for the latter before a break occurred due to a forehand error to 3-1 only to be broken back (3-2) moments after J.P. Ficovich's backhand lob error created his break point.
Nonetheless, the moment did not last long as another volley error from the American confirmed the other break-back to 4-2, with J.P. Ficovich strengthening his position with a service game hold to 5-2. Two games later, the Argentinean earned his chance to serve for the second set, but even if a double fault almost topped his tight beginning of the set when T. Boyer had 3 break points, the former won the next 5 points to secure the second set 6-3, thus forcing the deciding to determine the championship.

Meanwhile, in Campinas...
This week's finals then continued in the Campinas Challenger as a rematch of their previous meeting in Merida earlier this year, where Tristan Boyer, who advanced to the finals after fourth seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli's retirement down 3-6, 4-5 (and 3 match points) in the second set, took on Juan Pablo Ficovich, who knocked out Alvaro Guillen Meza 6-2, 6-4 earlier that day in the semifinals. While parts of this match became chaotic, the more consistent player in range stood out by the conclusion of the match.
T. Boyer had an aggressive start as he broke early to 1-0, setting things up with a forehand down-the-line winner 2 points in before his preceding forehand secured the break of serve. This was followed with a smooth consolidation to 2-0, and a working smash followed up a previous winner to set a one-point lead even if J.P. Ficovich held his serves to 3-2.
After the American held to 4-2, he became even more aggressive with his return depth, scoring a forehand winner somewhere to kick off the game before smashing his way to create his break point. He then successfully doubled his break advantage to 5-2, earning an opportunity to serve for the first set, which he succeeded (6-2) as he confirmed his commanding start to the match.

Campinas Ch SF: Tristan Boyer def. Camilo Ugo Carabelli [4] 6-3, 5-4 ret. Match Stats

C. Ugo Carabelli tried his best to stay in the match, but T. Boyer played decently throughout the whole match as he stayed aggressive and going deep paid off in the pressure points. From some noticeable volleys and smashes, this indicated his willingness to move forward, doing what he had to do as he generated 4 break points from here compared to C. Ugo Carabelli's 2, converting 75% of his break points throughout the match while the Argentinean fourth seed's break point conversion came due to T. Boyer's 3 double faults in a single game earlier in the first set.
Besides, T. Boyer also had his decent serving day statistically confirmed. Despite landing 52% of his first serves, he won 84% of his first serve points, which helped him navigating even the slightest problems also thanks to his 3 aces. However, the risks became more apparent as he double-faulted 9 times, 4 more than C. Ugo Carabelli's 5, which faded his second serve winning percentage to 45%, 16% lower than the Argentinean fourth seed throughout the whole match.
Interestingly, T. Boyer will face Juan Pablo Ficovich, who stunned Alvaro Guillen Meza earlier that day 6-2, 6-4 in a rematch of their Merida Challenger final earlier this year, where the American won 7-6(6), 6-2 for his maiden Challenger title. This meeting could also be interesting depending on their service game consistency and their offensives, but their final shot execution could be what things come down to at the end. That could make an interesting match! In contrast, C. Ugo Carabelli had a left leg injury, where he pulled out from the following week's Curitiba Challenger as a result. Speedy recovery!

C. Ugo Carabelli tried his best to keep his level in the second set, but T. Boyer had a decent service game which did not help even outside of the former's injury. In the third game, for example, a gradual point construction from the fourth seed was finished with a working volley before he held to 2-1, but he still took two separate medical timeouts within two changeovers for his injury (from thigh to leg).
Ultimately, T. Boyer became more aggressive, saving a break point made out of a forehand error with a functional volley before his massive hold to 4-4. He then smashed his way in his first two points of the next game before breaking to 5-4 due to C. Ugo Carabelli's double fault and earned the chance to serve for the match, where even though he had 3 match points out of his decent serves, the Argentinean fourth seed retired down 3 match points (*5-4 0-40), sending the unseeded American to the finals while raising questions about his abrupt retirement with possibly one ace/unreturned serve, ideally, to conclude this match.

Last week's Villa Maria Challenger runner-up and fourth seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli, who previously knocked out M. Tomas Barrios Vera 6-1, 6-0 in a convincing fashion at the previous round, took on Tristan Boyer, who survived the chaos to defeat Juan Carlos Prado Angelo 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in a talent-off to set up this 2023 Antofagasta Challenger final rematch. This match ended up being far from fruitful for some reason, but the first set might have had the tone, to some extent.
C. Ugo Carabelli initially still had a decent start to the match as he scored a rare working drop shot to start the fifth game of the first set, which was followed by T. Boyer's 3 consecutive double faults, which led to the fourth seed's break of serve to 3-2. However, the moment did not last long after a +1 backhand error fumbled his game point, followed by a forehand being fired too long that created T. Boyer's break point, which was immediately converted due to a third-shot forehand error to 3-3.
Subsequently, the unseeded American consolidated his lead with a service game hold to 4-3. Somehow, a key forehand volley smash paved the way for T. Boyer before breaking to 5-3, which earned him the chance to serve for the first set. Without any further hesitation, he took the first set 6-3 despite conceding a point, asserting his dominance in this match in contrast to a sluggish C. Ugo Carabelli.
