Despised and Rejected
3 People made fun of him, and even his friends left him. He was a man who suffered a lot of pain and sickness. We treated him like someone of no importance, like someone people will not even look at but turn away from in disgust.
4 The fact is, it was our suffering he took on himself; he bore our pain. But we thought that God was punishing him, that God was beating him for something he did. 5 But he was being punished for what we did. He was crushed because of our guilt. He took the punishment we deserved, and this brought us peace. We were healed because of his pain. 6 We had all wandered away like sheep. We had gone our own way. And yet the Lord put all our guilt on him. — Isaiah 53:3-6 | Spanish Blue Red and Gold Letter Edition Bible (SRV-BRG) and Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) Spanish Blue Red and Gold Letter Edition ™ Bible (SRV-BRG) Copyright © 2012/2015 BRG Bible Ministries.
translation by Google:
"I remembered that we talked about Wukong's travels around the world and a funny anecdote happened about a Greek king in the 20s XD. Said king was walking his dog in the gardens and the dog went to attack a well-kept monkey and then another monkey appeared to defend it!! And the king went to get the dog away from the monkeys and one of them ended up biting him and the king died with the infected wound!!! Now how do we associate him with the monkey king? Well the king was there calmly in a common monkey glamour and saw this dog attack another apparently common monkey… And he went to help him, obviously with the glamour it was just a normal dog (APE HELP APE) And when they escaped they took off their glamours and the other demon monkey thanks him for his help and they went their separate ways and a lifelong ban by Zeus for the death of the king in Greek lands… (Well Hades would smuggle Wukong in to be shitty with his little brother) Wukong: Now the other monkey is probably somewhere in India or Sri Lanka… Or was it Thailand? I don't know, we lost contact a long time ago… I was looking up about mystical monkeys to see the population of these, apparently most of these are Hindu or Chinese, and there are myths about one in Egypt or Costa Rica so the population also extends through Africa or America mainly in jungles (So they would be completely isolated or semi isolated from modern civilization)"
oh yes I remember we joked about this! XD
For those who do not know; in 1920, the King Alexander of Greece was out walking his dog when his dog attacked a macaque monkey. A second macaque came to the first monkey's defence, and the King was bitten in the confusion. The King would later die of an infection caused by the monkey bite. The confusion caused by the loss of the King set up the dominos for the Greek monarchy to fall during WW2.
So we joked that Sun Wukong was the second monkey who jumped in to protect the first (actually a fellow monkey demon wearing a glamour). And since the incident led to the death of a royal - Wukong now has a lifetime ban from Greece via the Greco-Roman Gods XD

The same channel has a video on the history of LGBT people and these images are so cute and funny
(this guy is talking WAY too fast for this to be good listening practice considering how bad my Spanish is, but oh well lol)
youtube
This is great. It's in Spanish with English subtitles. History told with little bits of paper, almost like animation but not quite.
One of the things that frustrates me is how many people doing the Camino de Santiago do not realize that its invention was both religious and political: Spain was trying to kick out the Muslims, and announcing that they had the bones of an Apostle in a city nearish the northwest coastline meant droves of Christians walking across northern Spain, which meant Christianity as a whole had a vested interest in protecting it from Muslim rule.
The guy making this uses the modern signage (yellow arrows, often on blue backgrounds), which is cute
I could quibble on how the cathedral didn't look like that for good while longer (it was built multiple times and then built onto several more) but that's not important to the point he's making lol
HAH. Truth.
Also, I did not know this, but enough Galicians emigrated to Argentina that the Argentinian word for all Spanish people was Gallegos (which is another word for Galician).
#sappho#I also watched his video on the history of the Basque region which was good#also I've realized I'm in this weird spot now#where I know vastly more about the history of Spain than like 95% of americans#but I know far less than your average Spanish ten-year-old most likely lol#so like my understanding of Spanish history is like: uhhh Roman rule then uhhhhh something something Muslims in the 700's#then uhhhhh lots of wars and the Camino and then the Muslims were out in 1492#then uhhhhh at some point a few centuries later France got all up in their business (actually I think that happened multiple times)#and then uhhh the Carlist wars??? and then the civil war that lead to Franco (who was a dictator)#(and also the Catholic Church was REAL CHUMMY with him)#and then in 1978 they got a democracy The End#also yes they still have a monarchy but it's a constitutional monarchy like a lot of Europe has#spain#bc of the tags lol

On February 18th 1957, Kenyan freedom fighter, Dedan Kimathi, was executed by the British. He led the KLFA (MauMau) revolution against the brutal British occupation of his country.
Dedan Kimathi, was hanged at dawn at Kamiti, just over 48 hours after his leave of appeal had been rejected by the Privy Council.
He was executed on a charge of carrying a revolver, which, under the Emergency Regulations, was punishable by death.
The basis of Kimathi's request for leave of appeal at the Privy Council was that he was on his way to surrender, and was not in fact "captured."
He also revealed that he was taking in his arms as was required of those who surrendered. The judges, however, rejected this without hearing his lawyer, describing them as "lies”.
Kimathi went calmly to his death and was described by a senior prison official who was present at the execution as a model prisoner. "To the last he was composed and quiet," he said.
At his own request, a Roman Catholic priest spent the whole night with him in his cell.
Although many African leaders were hesistant to condemn the execution out of fear of being labelled Mau Mau sympathisers, anti colonial activists from different parts of the world were quite forthright in their criticism.
“I don’t lead terrorists. I lead Africans who want their self government and land.” — D. Kimathi
•••
“Yo no dirijo terroristas. — D. Kimathi

Friday 8th November 2024
The night passed very peacefully, and our truckie place was really quite enjoyable in a truckie sort of way. We met some interesting people who are doing a very similar sort of route to us, and we swapped advice, which I'm sure has been forgotten already. With little choice, I suppose if you find yourself in this neck of the woods, then I could recommend it.
There are, however, two main places to stay in Daly Waters, and combined, they comprise Daly Waters. Sadly, through an administrative problem, we thought we had booked at the other place, which was altogether quirky whilst ours was altogether truckie. We thought we were staying at the Daly Waters Pub, Outback Servo. This place is run by a bloke who has what I might diagnose as compulsory junk collector syndrome. Which is good because I can persuade Martine that however bad she thinks I am in the collecting department, this chap is a severe case. He passed eclectic years ago. He has bits of De Havilland aircraft, bits of helicopter, rusty vintage cars, vans, and buses. In the bar area over years, he has persuaded women to leave their bras in quantity; and they are hanging up as proof! Well, I shall post photos as evidence and to form one's own opinion. We had a coffee there before we embarked on the next stage of our journey, which was to Tennant Creek 407kms away.
Now, to compare our journey at this point in any way to the Camino de Santiago could possibly be judged as sacrilegious. However, hear me out. Our journey, not a pilgrimage, along the Stuart Highway, is in this case very much following literally in the footsteps of one man, John McDouall Stuart. His courageous endeavour, putting his and others' safety to one side, with a single focus set out six times in all to find a route from Chambers Creek in the south to Darwin in the north in order to lay the first telegraph lines connecting Australia to London. Surely that accounts to a Camino? Today, we have discovered monuments to the successes and failures of these expeditions.
The first monument was in Daly Waters itself and was the Stuart Tree, which has carved into it a big letter S. The top half of the tree sadly is missing, however legend certainly agrees that Stuart himself found the time in a very busy and exacting schedule to emboss his initial thus, most likely with his Swiss Army Officer's knife. Perhaps there are doubts, but he was supposed to have stayed locally on his sixth expedition. We also viewed a monument just north of Tennant Creek at Attack Creek, where he was attacked by aboriginies and there were injuries apparently in the skirmish which caused the party to return for a bandage or two and more supplies. On a more positive note, the third monument was in honour of Sir Charles Todd, who, at 15.15 on August 22nd, 1872, officially witnessed the joining of the two sections from the north and south. Unfortunately, we are denied more detail, but we can perhaps imagine the course of events when Sir Charles tried to send a message, nothing happens and some wag says, have you tried turning it off and back on again? We can only imagine the sequence, but at 15.15 in Australia, it would have been 4.45am in London. I doubt anyone of any importance would have been interested in a chat with someone in the antipodeans. Who? says Queen Victoria. Sir Charles Todd, says Gladstone. Who, says QV again? Do I know him?
Of course, when Stuart had completed his route, which I trust he had recorded and marked meticulously, he then called for Cable and Wireless to do the grunting and actually lay the cable. The route could not be criticised, it ran as straight as a ruler. The greatest inventions of all times must include the wheel, sliced bread, Teflon frying pans and sticks. Stuart must have used 3 sticks to get a straight line north. Whilst the aboriginies were throwing sticks at him, he was employing them like a Roman to make a straight line. That's evolution for you I suppose. The aboriginies caused a lot of interruptions to the progress of the line. Even when it was complete, they made it their business to damage it. They broke the glass insulators on the poles and used the fragments of glass on the tips of their spears. The solution appears to be that they were given uniforms and jobs in the repeater stations, which also fixed the naked issues the missionaries were concerned about.
We are now ensconced in the Outback Caravan Site in Tennant Creek and are extremely comfortable sitting here once again watching the sun go down and consuming SB with some nibbles.
ps. Travelling along the Stuart we passed through huge areas that were in a controlled burn session. Quite unnerving having flames next to the highway.

Barcelos, Portugal
Barcelos is a city and a municipality in Braga District in the Minho Province, in the north of Portugal
Originally a Roman settlement, it expanded and became the seat of the First Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. The palace of the Dukes of Bragança was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and is now an open-air museum.
The town is on the Portuguese Way, a Christian pilgrimage route connecting to the Camino de Santiago.

Hey, I saw your comment on the post about reading about occult history and checking the sources of books before buying and believing them. And I noticed you were interested in Iberian deities. I was super curious what you already know about them! I'm a polytheist myself and practitioner of witchcraft, but I'm also a religious studies student with a focus on mythologies and ancient cultures. If you've got any resources I could look at, that would be awesome!
Hi! Unfortunately I don't know much since there's not a lot of sources on Iberian mythology. Iberian literature is practically non-existant. Our ancestors were good at battling but kind of lacking in the cultural side of things, so I kind of understand why Romanization was so easy to complete (in opposition to the actual conquest of the land that took ages).
So the sources we have come mainly from Greek and Roman authors who created some stories that have no archeological or historical basis (like the existence of Atlantis) and also some half-truths (like the kingdom of Tartessos which I find so interesting, here's a source for that: https://www.thelocal.es/20230419/groundbreaking-discovery-sheds-light-on-spains-mythical-tartessos-civilization)
Our sources on Iberian gods come mostly from archaeology. I personally like this blog since it provides the academic sources they get their information from: https://santuariosibricospruebaticum.wordpress.com/category/deidades-ibericas/
I would also suggest you look into Galician mythology. It's an area in the North of Spain that's heavily Celtic influenced to the point where they still call the celebrations of October 31 Samhain instead of Halloween. They are known for their meigas (Galician word for witches). If you ever go to Galicia you'll find a lot of witch-inspired souvenirs. Though not really ancient, they have a lot of mythology that's mainly about elementals/the fae. My favorite one is the Santa Compaña:
So to sum it up, we don't know much about the Iberian gods because our sources come from Romans and Greeks and the Iberians sincretised to Religio Romana so they didn't really write about the indigenous gods. Most of the current folklore and legends we know about nowadays comes from the medieval age and it's kind of a mixture of stories told by the Christian and Muslims inhabitants of Spain at that time. It either focuses on monarchs or on elemental beings, but not really on gods since mostly everyone was monotheist at that time. If you're interested in these legends let me know because I do have more sources on this, though all of them are in Spanish.

Day 24 - 4 May Calzadilla de los Hermanillos 17.9km
This was the day that changed everything. We set off at just before 7 for a quick cup of coffee at the local albergue and we said our goodbyes to all our Camino family. It would be a long day for us and we had sent our packs on ahead.
But very soon a niggling pain in my ankle became much worse. With hindsight when I stopped to put some gel on I should have turned back and ordered a taxi but hindsight is great.
We walked with Jenny and Mel and they were great company. Really kept things upbeat. The road we are walking on is the longest stretch of Roman road in Spain - so we are following in the footsteps of Emperor Augustus. The road is flat and straight of course. Good old Romans.
We passed some very cute calfs.
Along the way we saw these weird structures. Carrie wondered if they were wine cellars but apparently people live in them - they are underground houses.
But I was limping badly and the relief at seeing the sign for Reliegos! I sat outside a closed cafe on a chair while Carrie went to find something open. Eventually we found an Albergue and he ordered us a taxi. We waited half an hour for it - I was literally dozing off waiting for having dosed up on ibuprofen and paracetamol! I had decided realising how bad it was to seek medical advice and the nearest centre was Leon.
The taxi duly arrived - lady driver who had her young daughter with her in the front. She was wonderful. Took us to pick up our backpacks at the Albergue in Mansilla Mayor then onward to Leon.
On the way I managed to book a room for Carrie and I for the night. We got to Leon, dropped our bags off at the hotel and went to the local pharmacy.
The interior of the pharmacy was amazing - it was obviously a really old building. The chap who served me was useless - sold me some tablets to reduce the inflammation and told me to ice it. When I asked about strapping it he tried to sell me some bandages. Not being a first aid nurse I declined.
He did write down the name of the local ‘private’ medical centre - turned out to be a 3 minute walk from our hotel. I left Carrie to walk over there. The centre really catered for foreigners - the receptionist rang for an interpreter. I paid a set amount - but when she realised I was a pilgrim I got a massive discount! Eventually got to see a doctor/x ray etc and a prescription for anti-inflammatories and a super strength gel. Angel Carrie went off to get the drugs while I stayed in the hotel.
Carrie sourced some ice - she has been super nurse/mum!
We had pasta at a very busy restaurant right on the Cathedral square and it was excellent.
So here we are - poor Carrie is coming down with a cold and I am limping. Feels very strange - its almost the exact stage Jane tore her ligament last year and I am sure its the same clinic she went to.
So the plan for me is to rest up. I have cancelled our booking for accommodation on Tuesday at Villar de Mazarife and booked my original apartment for 3 nights rather than two. Fingers crossed.

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐍 / actividad doce.
𝐀𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐎𝐂
¡Buenas tardes a todes!

En El Camino: Our Pilgrimage to Compostela (part 2)
We walked on average 22km a day to Compostela and on the last day we only had 15km left so we felt that our destination was just a hop, skip, and a jump away. That was not the case. The last segment of the journey felt long and painful. Wendi and I did not talk much on the journey as I recalled as we focused on our individual pain and the goal of getting to our destination. Here are some reflections and insights I will share as we reached the Cathedral, the sacred goal of our camino.
In the first two pictures I stopped at the chapel of St. Lucy, the patron of eyesight. I touched the statue as an act of simple veneration and left. I received the sello (seal) and continued on the path. As I walked on, I heard the passage from the Gospel of John chapter 9 verse 41 recited to me a couple of times. This is where Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for questioning his healing of a blind man. Jesus tells them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains." I had to consider what this said to me and it made me think about how I intend to conclude my book on social ministry. It spoke to me of the temptation that social justice ministers have in presuming to know what is just and fair and how we can sometimes lose our faith and hope for a just world. Here I have been a person who claims to see, to be the arbiter of justice and equality. My concluding chapter is on having hope and this insight was a reminder from Jesus that we need to let go of our ideals and allways remember that the Kingdom of God is a vision and mission that transcends our own limited socio-political aspirations.
In the third picture we had reached the mountain of Gozo (joy). This is the place where pilgrims see for the first time the town of Compostela. We walked down to the town itself and the fourth and fifth picture shows parts of the town itself. It felt rather ordinary to be honest. It was a great sigh of relief to feel that we had reached our goal but the goal itself did not feel particularly special. I was in awe of the statue of King Alfonso II el Casto (the Chaste), he is considered the first pilgrim to the shrine which was a recently discovered Roman Mausoleum with three bodies believed to be St. James and two of his disciples Athanasius and Theodore in 812AD. The historical context begins to draw me to a greater significance that lies at the center of the town.
Pictures 7-13, and 17-20 all show the outside areas around the Cathedral and the town square. It is an awesome sight to behold. The Church of San Fructuoso (#11) and San Francisco (#9) surround the Cathedral and offer their own amazing architectural beauty and historical depth. The Church of San Francisco was founded by St. Francis himself who was a pilgrim in the early 13th century to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela. Pictures 13 and 19 are from the courtyard of the Cathedral which is where the Compostela museum is. Pictures 15, 27-29 are from the museums including both the Compostela and Pilgrims Museum. Picture 15 has an amazing wall of sacred relics and you can see ancient depictions and the history of Santiago in picture 29 where five main episodes of his life are depicted in a layered woodcut. Picture 27 has a famous carving of Santiago Matamoros, the legendary knight that turns the tide for the Christians in the legendary battle of Clavijo in 844AD. You can stand on this ground, amidst this great Cathedral and surrounding churches, and not help but get caught up with a certain euphoria that is shared by all who enter. I cannot say that all the people the come are religious and devotional, many are simply curious, but I will say that all people who come are deeply spiritual. This moves the community to break into joy and all people, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or even temperament, share in that euphoric feeling.
Picture 14 is inside the Cathedral itself. It is simply breathtaking and inspiring. The statue of St. James is there, in the middle, and pilgrims are allowed to go above the resting place where his bones are in ossuary box and pray to the great Saint. In picture 16 you can stay and meditate in the presence of his ossuary box. This is a liminal place where the secular and temporal touch the sacred and eternal. It is a place of deep peace and serenity. A place that where everything comes together as you share in the peace that Christ bestowed on his followers after the resurrection. Santiago witnessed this resurrected experience and here we were, spiritually and psychologically sharing in this experience through what remains of his physical presence. This is the goal of our journey. To share in the cosmic peace that brings a sense of fulfillment to our broken lives. Some pilgrims (like Wendi) entered into a quite emotional state as they experienced the sacred in that moment. Others (like me) just stayed fixed on the sacred and allowed ourselves to be lost in the moment until the Holy Spirit moved us to explore this further.
Pictures 21-26 are going to the end of the world, the place known as Fisterra and Muxia. Picture 26 shows the place where pilgrims leave behind a piece of their lives that they are ready to sacrifice and let go of. Picture 25 shows a meal that we all shared with new friends we made along the way from Spain and Michigan. The insights that we receive will develop further as we reintegrate ourselves back into our world, but for the moment, many of us sit with and celebrate our own experience of death and rebirth, sacrifice and reemergence. The Paschal mystery, the passion, death and resurrection that the world experienced through Christ, no longer remains a mere statement of faith but instead it becomes a part of our own nature. This experience is something that needs to be processed both on our own and with loved ones but your own context (and insights) develop further when you also do this in the context of fellow companions along the way.
Picture 30 shows the certificates and passports we received at the end of the journey. The passport highlights the places we stopped along the way while the two forms of the certificate officially recognize our pilgrimage.
This then are the insights that I carry with me as I re-enter the world and again take my place within the field of social ministry and family life. I expect that other insights will form and develop but for now, I am just reflecting on what I experienced through this amazing process.
