There has been so much exposure of LGBTQI artists for the past few years, lesbians like Chappel roan( I am sure she is independent) and Renee Rapp, Billie Ellish just came out with an album that has a song that explicitly talks about eating a girl out, I just think, either Camila doesn’t want to come out of the closet (which I don’t get it but whatever) or we are just fucking wrong about everything, like that girl is truly straight (which again don’t make any sense to due to her songs and messages in MVs) I am just so confused.

There is one thing I'm 100% sure about, and that thing is Camila Cabello is not straight. 😅

But I understand the frustration and confusion.

A lot has changed in the last five to ten years. When she started her career the advice given to artists was definitely not to come out if you don't want to be pigeonholed as a gay artist and never go mainstream. I think if you start your career this way and focus on this "straight mainstream strategy" it's hard to back track and it's more risky. It would be such a different situation if she started her solo career a few years later. I keep thinking about this 2017 "Omg" Camila who seemed so eager to let her lesbian self out into the world. If that happened to be in 2023 instead of 2017, who knows?

Why is she still in the closet then? Even with the reasons I mentioned, it's still not impossible to come out. It's just more complicated. The conclusion I came to is that coming out publicly is not as important to her anymore. Maybe because she doesn't have the energy for this anymore after getting shut down again and again for years. Or maybe she decided she's fine with not being out in public. Maybe her career as it is now suits her just fine

i have so many favorite mgk songs but my favorite atm is the new one from the hotel diablo 5 year anniversary release, ‘el pistolero’! that song goes so fucking hard and i believe it might be his best to date, at least in my opinion. and to answer your other question, hotel diablo is my favorite album of his. i love his pop punk stuff but hotel diablo is one of my favorite albums of all time. i even had the album on vinyl but i don’t have it anymore unfortunately

yes!!! i did hear it, it’s very good and it’s a song i will play when i feel overwhelmed for sure, i should add it to my playlist for that if i haven’t already. but this isn’t my favorite cover he’s done. my favorite would have to be either his ‘love on the brain’ one or the ‘swim good’ one!!!

Hey my dear! I know you’ve discussed PR relationships throughout your blog but I wanted to point out one of the most recent PR stunts in the Western music world. Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello. I know a lot of people want to believe they were real but there are so many sources that claim it wasn’t. And I was kind of on the fence about it until the whole “Coachella rekindling.”

Shawn and Camilla’s Coachella rekindling happened right before Camilla released a teaser of a new single where she actually mentions Coachella, as if she was attempting to fan the flames of the reconciliation with Shawn to spark a renewed interest. In PR terms, it seems she was trying to create some hype for her new music.

After Coachella and the song tease, Camila and Shawn were conveniently seen out and about together all cuddly.

Then it comes out that the two have broken up again and guess what! Now it’s Shawn’s turn to release a new song! So yeah, I think this is a PR stunt that benefits both of them when it comes to their music, and maybe it also gives Shawn a beard.

A lot of people are under the assumption that Shawn is queer. I don’t know if that’s true because I don’t pay much attention to what he’s doing (not really a big fan of this pair), but he’s still really young and I think he’s been trying to become as big of a success as male solo singers before him. I think coming across as straight is a tactic he is heavily implementing to cover up his possible queerness (again, I have no idea what he identifies as, though I think he has claimed to be straight).

He even did a song with Justin Beiber even though he “dated” Justin’s wife back in 2017. Justin is over it, obviously, since he’s now married to Hailey, but it’s still interesting that he was willing to collab with Shawn. Makes me wonder if he wasn’t threatened by Shawn for some reason 😉

Anyway, Shawn and Camilla’s situation reeks of PR and possible bearding, and could very well be a blueprint for PR and bearding in SK media. This is what I see going on with Tae and Ms. Jen. The only difference is that, unlike Shawn, Tae has never claimed to be straight. And Tae repeatedly shows his appreciation for queer music, movies, clothes, jewelry, etc. while also mentioning JK all the time. I just found the comparisons interesting. Shawn was all out there with Camilla, making out and being couple-y, while Tae seems to be playing up the PR while also trying to not be nearly quite as showy. Like he’s trying to do the bare minimum to hide his queerness which makes it even that much more obvious to me that it’s PR/bearding as a way to promote his upcoming release while helping Ms. Jen get attention for her show.

Apart of me wonders if the PR stunt is also meant to help bring attention to more than just him and Ms. Jen. It seems like the PR could also give runoff attention to JK’s solo project as well as BTS in general. Now that they are entering the military, maybe PR stunts keep interest alive and thriving. Just a thought!

Thanks for sharing! I don't follow either Shawn or Camilla closely, but during their part 1, it really really struck me as pr. The obvious start when doing a song together, and I clearly remeber Shawn having a break-up song ready to go at the announcement of their split. And now this again.

Shawn's short stint with Hailey (now) Bieber also looked very pr to me, with the MET gala as their high. I feel a lot of the queer rumors about him come from him having a certain softness about him, which feels very stereotypical. But at the same time, he could very well be queer. Those rumors alone could be reason for him to want a pr-relationship... I think the pandemic added to the length of it, since it kept them in the eye of the public during a time not much was possible for even celebs.

Another example, (one I have witnessed in real-time and followed closely even), is Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde. They started dating at the start of filming Don't Worry Darling and their 'relationship' ended almost to the date 2 years later, coincidentally right after Don't Worry Darling hit streaming services. This stunt also had obvious peaks when something was to be promoted (Harry's album, the release of trailers and teasers, Harry's single's, Harry's side business Pleasing, Olivia's cover's on magazine's). Olivia was seen wearing Harry's merch almost every papwalk. Things came to a high during Cannes filmfestival last year (feels familiar anyone?), when Don't Worry Darling had it's premiere. Harry has been rumored to be queer from almost the start of his career.

I feel Kpop definitely looked at western entertainment for inspo. I don't think they will take the over the top route like the examples we just mentioned, but a more subtle form of this is certainly feasable. If you translate a western pr-relationship to SK standarts, Taennie is what you will end up with.

Tae has been as open as he can be I think. It's never too much, but for those familiar with queer artists, designers, art... it pops out. Not everyone will get the message, but those that matter will.

I'm not sure if the pr is meant to extend to anyone beyond Tae and Jennie. It might be a nice side affect of things. By Tae having a girlfriend Jk will also have a slight veil of coverage. And any pr for Tae is by extension pr for BTS as a whole. Their enlistment is a big gap to cover. Fandom will look for ways to fill the gap BTS leaves and they might go to other artists for that. Thankfully by the time the last member enlists there will only be a short amount of time till Jin is back. But I can imagine some stuff having been come up with to make sure fandom keeps invested. By the time all members are back, things will eventually settle into way more natural interactions I think. It's going to be an interesting time for sure.
