Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla - Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on Ode to Joy for a Prepared Piano
In this work, which combines sculpture and performance, a musician plays part of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on a grand piano while standing in a hole carved into the center of the instrument. He or she leans out over the keyboard to perform the famous fourth movement of the early-nineteenth-century composition, usually referred to as “Ode to Joy,” upside down and backwards. Walking while playing, the musician moves the instrument, which is mounted on wheels, slowly across the floor.
The hole in the piano renders two octaves of the keyboard inoperative, so a structurally incomplete version of the ode is heard, revised for the top and bottom ends of the range. The spatial and tonal gap in the composition fundamentally transforms the dynamic between player and instrument as well as the signature melody, emphasizing the contradictions and ambiguities attached to a piece of music that has been invoked as a symbol of humanist values and national pride in ideologically disparate contexts such as the Chinese Cultural Revolution, white-supremacist Rhodesia, the Third Reich, and, more recently, the European Union, for which it is the official anthem.
“We’re asking the musicians to reinvent their skills, or to use their skills to make new gestures or forms that are not part of their standard vocabulary,” the artists have said. “And this idea of re-skilling doesn’t end with the performer. The public is asked to re-skill its way of viewing.”

Chuck Baldwin Live
October 19, 2024
Most of our country’s major media, politicians and government employees, as well as the owners and representatives of Big Business, are not only mute on the subject of America’s broken borders and the invasion of illegal aliens—including violent criminals—into America, but they are also capitalizing on this criminal activity.
My wife and I recently purchased a new refrigerator from Lowes, and it was delivered by two Venezuelans, neither of whom could speak a word of English. They then proceeded to take pictures of our house as they left. There could be no GOOD reason for doing that. Needless to say, that was the last appliance we will ever buy from that company. And this is in our little town in Northwest Montana.
The true nature of the increase in criminal activity (the very fact that illegals are here is illegal) associated with the invasion of illegals into America will be hidden by governments and newsmakers for as long as possible. In the meantime, the U.S. is becoming less and less safe—no matter where we live.
Of course, the jeopardous situation that we are forced to live in is the result of the Biden-Harris administration over the last four years that has—for its own political purposes—shown us Americans that they care absolutely NOTHING about our safety, peace and tranquility.
Just five months before Luis Miguel Calzadilla-Rojas — a Venezuelan migrant and alleged Tren de Aragua gangbanger — was arrested after a shooting outside a probation office in Aurora, Colorado, he was welcomed into the US — thanks to a controversial immigration program launched by the Biden-Harris administration.
Calzadilla-Rojas entered the country using CBP One — an app that is designed to allow asylum seekers a legal pathway to entry into America.
He’s just one of 1.3 million migrants who have come into the country through legal routes created by the Biden-Harris admin in less than two years. [Emphasis added]
The programs were created unilaterally, without Congressional approval or input.
Homeland Security sources tell The Post that there’s almost no vetting involved for most migrants, especially if their home countries — including Venezuela, Haiti and Cuba — refuse to cooperate with American law enforcement.

Day 24 - 4 May Calzadilla de los Hermanillos 17.9km
This was the day that changed everything. We set off at just before 7 for a quick cup of coffee at the local albergue and we said our goodbyes to all our Camino family. It would be a long day for us and we had sent our packs on ahead.
But very soon a niggling pain in my ankle became much worse. With hindsight when I stopped to put some gel on I should have turned back and ordered a taxi but hindsight is great.
We walked with Jenny and Mel and they were great company. Really kept things upbeat. The road we are walking on is the longest stretch of Roman road in Spain - so we are following in the footsteps of Emperor Augustus. The road is flat and straight of course. Good old Romans.
Tumblr media
We passed some very cute calfs.
Along the way we saw these weird structures. Carrie wondered if they were wine cellars but apparently people live in them - they are underground houses.

But I was limping badly and the relief at seeing the sign for Reliegos! I sat outside a closed cafe on a chair while Carrie went to find something open. Eventually we found an Albergue and he ordered us a taxi. We waited half an hour for it - I was literally dozing off waiting for having dosed up on ibuprofen and paracetamol! I had decided realising how bad it was to seek medical advice and the nearest centre was Leon.
The taxi duly arrived - lady driver who had her young daughter with her in the front. She was wonderful. Took us to pick up our backpacks at the Albergue in Mansilla Mayor then onward to Leon.
On the way I managed to book a room for Carrie and I for the night. We got to Leon, dropped our bags off at the hotel and went to the local pharmacy.
Tumblr media
The interior of the pharmacy was amazing - it was obviously a really old building. The chap who served me was useless - sold me some tablets to reduce the inflammation and told me to ice it. When I asked about strapping it he tried to sell me some bandages. Not being a first aid nurse I declined.
He did write down the name of the local ‘private’ medical centre - turned out to be a 3 minute walk from our hotel. I left Carrie to walk over there. The centre really catered for foreigners - the receptionist rang for an interpreter. I paid a set amount - but when she realised I was a pilgrim I got a massive discount! Eventually got to see a doctor/x ray etc and a prescription for anti-inflammatories and a super strength gel. Angel Carrie went off to get the drugs while I stayed in the hotel.
Carrie sourced some ice - she has been super nurse/mum!
We had pasta at a very busy restaurant right on the Cathedral square and it was excellent.
So here we are - poor Carrie is coming down with a cold and I am limping. Feels very strange - its almost the exact stage Jane tore her ligament last year and I am sure its the same clinic she went to.
So the plan for me is to rest up. I have cancelled our booking for accommodation on Tuesday at Villar de Mazarife and booked my original apartment for 3 nights rather than two. Fingers crossed.
