<Today’s LP> 오늘은 간만에 맥코이 타이너 최고의 명반, “Sahara”를 턴테이블에 걸었다. 콜트레인 쿼텟에 참가했던 그의 경력으로 보면 이 음반은 존 콜트레인의 그림자가 드리워져 있긴 하다. 모드 재즈 피아니스트로 한 시대를풍미했던 그의 다른 작품들과 비교했을 때 이 앨범은 확실히 특이하고 명확한 음악세계를 표현한다. 23분에 달하는 동명 타이틀의 ‘Sahara’는 피아노 트리오를 기반으로 플룻과 소프라노 색소폰이 아방한 분위기를 마음껏 풍긴다. 솔로피아노로 전개되는 두번째 트랙의 ‘A prayer for my family’는 짜릿한 무게감을 더해주며 피아노의 새로운 가능성을 피로한다. ��번째 트랙은 맥코이의 일본 가야금 고토 연주로 시작되는데, 어울어지는 플룻과의 경연은 환상적인 신기루를 보는 듯한 착각에 빠진다. 격정적인 피아노와 드럼... 네번째 트랙에서는 사막에 몰아치는 폭풍우 같은 긴장감이 몰려온다. 60년대가 끝나고 새로운 재즈의 기운들이 꿈틀거리던 70년대 초반, 혼란과 분립의 재즈계에 전혀 새로운 방향을 제시했던 맥코이 타이너의 명반, “Sahara”. 이제서야 이 작품의 가치가 다시한번 크게 느껴지는 아침이다. #music#jazz#piano#koto#flute#McCoyTyner#SonnyFortune#CalvinHill#AlphonseMouson#LP#Sahara#Milesstone#1972(Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0e1VH1FE2A/?igshid=fp5eruaf2p21

Listened to this one after practice today. The ultimate for me, Pharaoh in 1972 live in LA I would kill to talk to someone there at the Ash Grove that September night.
