FOTD #116 : giant puffball! (calvatia gigantea)

the giant puffball is a saprotrophic fungus from the family agaricaceae. it often grows in meadows or deciduous forests, & can be found in temperate areas across the world :-)

the big question : can i bite it?? when young, this fungus is edible !! as it matures, it becomes inedible.

c. gigantea description :

"most giant puffballs grow to be 10 to 50 centimetres (4 to 20 inches), sometimes to be 90 cm (35 in) in diameter; although occasionally some can reach diameters up to 150 cm (60 in) & weights of 20 kg (44 lb). yhe inside of mature giant puffballs is greenish brown, whereas the interior of immature puffballs is white."

Today, without humanization, for some reason I wanted this mushroom to look exactly like this. I also didn't know if it was important to choose a specific mushroom (like Common Puffball), but I chose Giant Puffball because it's cool.

This week in foraging:

F asked me to stop by walmart and pick up apples - which confused the heck out of me because we both believe walmart eats time and their produce sucks, until I realized she meant the apple trees you can walk to from the walmart parking lot. I made two batches of apple fritters and dehydrated some apples (which we have eaten already)

During hikes we sampled various crab apples which ranged from the bitterest crabapple I have ever tasted to sweet but tiny little striped apples.

I had to hike amost to the edge of the nearest state park, but I finally found unsmashed giant puffballs. There were at least 10 in the area, and I took home one of the smallest but my house is still full of puffball. I have made soup, dehydrated a bunch, and still have a good-sized wedge in the fridge. I might try going back for one later when I have more time because I'd love to try making a puffball lasagna, but IDK if that'll happen this year because we're always overwhelmed.

I also collected some milkweed pods to try to plant in our yard for next season.

Giant Puffball Mushroom (Calvatia gigantea)

Found my first puffball yesterday! Saw it in a field out of the corner of my eye when I was driving, had to go back later that day to go check it out.

It was SO tasty.

Fanfic idea!! Okay here’s inspo. So when I was first playing the update I was messing around and thought it would be funny to try to get Sozo in the mating tent with a Mushroomo. I didn’t expect anything to come out of it considering they had a 55% chance but Sozo ended up being a father and then after taking a nap he ate his partner. When the thing hatched I read his mind because I was curious what he thought about having a kid. It was something like “there’s a follower who looks a lot like me… weird” idk if that’s specific to Sozo but regardless it is fitting for him considering he’s high as fuck and it seems like his awareness was fucked. After I continued on his storyline I got him sober and he became Dr. Sozonius I read his mind again and he had multiple thoughts about being proud of his kid.

Are you still following? Cause here’s where the fanfic comes in! Imagine Sozo had a kid but due to his addiction he was a mostly or even completely absent father. After he beats his addiction (with the Lamb’s help of course) he tries to reconnect with his kid (who he probably knows nothing about or very little. Depends on if the kid was born before or during the shrooms thing. Keeping true to the inspo it would be during but there’s no reason it can’t be changed for storytelling’s sake) he’s trying his best to be a super supportive dad partly to make up for his absence but also because he genuinely cares about his kid. His kid is iffy about the whole thing but also would like to have a dad in their life so while they are trying to make the relationship work it just isn’t and the whole fic would be about that struggle between them. Also part of it would be about how Dr. Sozonius doesn’t remember his time as Sozo and that is messing with him and his kid briefly knew him as Sozo (from the Lamb’s Cult and/or from being a child. Depends on the specifics of when they were born and all that) his kid is struggling a bit with their dad trying to connect because A) he was absent their whole life and B) Sozo was crazy as fuck and probably scary. Sozo and Sozonius are the same dude! The difference is shrooms! So the kid probably looks at him and despite him being sober and being Dr. Sozonius they just see Sozo.

I just think this could be a really cool fic with very dramatic and painful moments but also some comforting and sweet ones, I just don’t really know how to write it beyond concept. If you write it or have already written/seen something similar definitely send it to me!! I’d love to read it. I haven’t looked at any cotl fics yet so I have no idea what people are writing. I MIGHT try my hand at writing it if I feel the motivation at some point.

Also in my game I named the kid Calvatia after calvatia gigantea, the giant puffball mushroom, because they kinda looked like that but hydnellum peckii, devil’s tooth/bleeding tooth mushroom, could’ve also been a good namesake too because they were kinda pinkish.

I thought of you today! I was driving home and I THOUGHT I saw an *enormous* mushroom! Almost the size of a pie pumpkin! I actually pulled over and turned the car around to see it - I thought I was going to have to pull over to take a picture. Turns out, it WAS a pie pumpkin. Someone had thrown out a white pie pumpkin and it was rotting by the side of the road.

Oh the things I've mistaken for mushrooms! So many times. :D

Wouldn't that be an awesome mushroom, though, the size of a pumpkin? Btw, Calvatia gigantea/ Langermannia gigantea can in fact grow that huge.

Life with cerebral palsy: I see myself reach for the moka coffee pot on the stove, my spatial perception brain barks out a warning, my hand spasms and knocks it over anyway, spilling the rest of the coffee all across the stove. The stovetop desperately needed to be cleaned anyway. Heavy Heavy sigh.

Husband, offering his cup of coffee: I'm sorry about your spilled coffee.

Me: You're sorry? I'm the one who deliberately did a thing I knew might cause a spasm. Durrr durrr I'm a human with human perceptions look at me doing human things whoops

Also, husband brought home and baked the largest fucking puffball mushroom I've ever seen (Calvatia gigantea). It's fucking delicious. Every time I see a puffball I think of that weirdass horror movie called "Puffball: The Devil's Eyeball" that included internal ejaculation shots and an imaginary fetus apparently gestating inside a mushroom.

You know, I realized that neither husband nor I got angry when I knocked over the coffee. We both just sighed heavily, shrugged, and went to clean up. There's no point in getting worked up! These things happen! We should actually expect them! It's okay! Things needed scrubbing anyway!

The art of Not Getting Upset is a fine art. This is what my husband has practiced for three decades. He's proud that I have learned.

I’ve seen a lot of mushroom content recently, so I decided to draw a local one! Calvatia Gigantea or the giant puffball mushroom grow all over the Midwest and tend to fruit in August or September.

There are quite a few! I’m only going to list some of the ones that are easier to identify and I have eaten personally:

- Chanterelle (cantharellus)

- Lion’s Mane (hericium erinaceus)

- Morels (morchella)

- Giant Puffball (calvatia gigantea)

- Oysters (pleurotus ostreatus)

- Chicken of the woods (laetiporous sulphureus)

- Hen of the woods (grifola frondosa)

* Always forage responsibly and NEVER eat anything you aren’t sure of. Cross check multiple sources, take a lot of pictures for ID (there are a lot of more localized foraging groups on FB and reddit that are very helpful), and check your area for in-person foraging groups. Especially with mushrooms – when in doubt, throw it out!

Lactarius Quietus, produces milky-looking latex when cut.

Morel, Morchella Esculenta. I’ve never tried one, but supposedly very delicious!

Turkey Tail, Trametes Versicolor.

Puffball, Calvatia Gigantea. Great for pizza, apparently they sometimes get so big they’re mistaken for sheep.

Cordyceps, Genus. Inspired The Walking Dead, but only mind-controls ants.

Lion’s Mane, Hericium Erinaceus.

Chicken Of The Woods, Laetiporus Sulphureus. Never tried it, supposedly has the texture of chicken.
