Module 3: Synthesis & Reflection

The question of what I wanted to be when I grew up was always multiple choice: doctor, lawyer, or engineer?1 Because of my inclination to reading, writing, and speaking, I was teased to be the next “Atty. Ybañez”. Hearing this so many times as a child made me conclude that I wanted to become a lawyer.

Having too many voices can confuse you2, as I experienced. The biggest challenge for me was to decide what to listen to: what my family was telling me, what is societally acceptable, or do I want to actually listen to myself? I knew that the latter was best, but as a teen who was easily pressured by her peers and social media, it wasn’t easy.

Many of my past decisions were based on clout. I took the ABM strand3 to become a CPA-Lawyer. I had no passion for it, but I knew it’d make good money, so it was my goal. I also applied to Ateneo with Legal Management as my first choice in line with this.

Fast forward to freshman year, I shifted to Communication–where my passion truly lies. I realized that my heart wasn’t in corporate law, and I didn’t want to discuss business anymore. I wanted to be true to myself in college, and not give into what society prescribes. It is in this truth and authenticity that one can best discern4 what to do in the future.

My compelling vision is to become a media-entertainment lawyer, one who fights for what she believes in while enjoying it. I sincerely feel called to it; I am very passionate about media and I love learning about it. Personality-wise, I love reading, writing, talking, and I can even get defensive at times. They sound shallow, but I believe that these qualities and interests were not given to me at random. They are all like pieces of the puzzle that come together as I aim to play a role in society.

Moreover, my heart hurts for our country, and I believe that there is a severe need for more who can fight for justice and peace, specifically in the media sector. My hurts and inclinations give insights to my calling5, so even if it may not be as stable as a career as being a CPA-Lawyer, I want to heed to Christ’s call. Real life involves risks6, and I’d rather live my truth than live in constant what ifs.

I find great fulfillment and joy in being able to help others out, and building relationships. I love listening to unique stories and learning more about the world through others. To be honest, I’m still not entirely sure if this is what God wants for me. I want to be part of God’s reign and Jesus’ mission. I can do this as I continuously seek Him and open myself up to wherever He might call me7. As I go down from the hill, my prayer is to be salt and light to the world8.

1 Given my context, my life has always been somewhat laid out for me. I’m an only child. On top of that layer, I was also the very first apo on both sides of the family. This led to most of my family’s dreams being put on my shoulders, even if my elders didn’t mean to. Most of the expectations were really put on me, which has made me pressured to live a relatively good life and pick a good career in the future. While I don’t think careers are the ultimate end, I think it’s a cultural belief to have it be the most important thing in the world.
