callie to shauna present day: “i swear to god mom, if you lie to me again — im so fucking over secrets. like, i can’t.”

more than the cannibalism symbolism, i like the cultist aspects of the girls! and also how insane shauna is (misty is "crazy", but tbh shauna is more insane to me bc she looks put together), she has this whole "if i can't have my best friend all i can do is get the thing closest to her [her boyfriend]" and that's how they got to me
i started watching yellowjackets bc of a video-essayist i like and he made this amazing point between lord of the flies, lost and it abt how they're not the same thing
and he made this point that just made me love love love love love laura lee and all the trauma induced religion and vulnerability /t1da
The cult aspect IS fascinating. And to circle back to the Lord of the Flies thing, I am obsessed with the concept of "when middle school boys are left alone, they become savages who fight each other but when high school girls are in a similar predicament, they essentially create a hierarchy followed by a cult coupled with a religion." I think it is a really interesting look at the differences in age and in gender and I think that's why I'm hooked.
Personally, I don't see Shauna as possessing romantic feelings for Jackie. I've seen LOTS of posts about it and I see what people are saying but for me, it's a different type of obsession. It's platonic in a way that's VERY specific to girlhood. I think most girls have experienced a complicated, toxic and sometimes all-encompassing female friendship that's rooted in jealousy and other negative feelings, and as someone who has had a few of those, I relate so hard to some of the Shauna/Natalie moments. It feels very true to life in that regard. (I do understand why people ship it romantically but for me, it is SUCH a well-done example of that very specific kind of female friendship and so I'm not willing to erase it and just say 'oh well obviously they're in love.' I think it's way more complicated than that.)
BUT SHAUNA. SWEET SHAUNA. SWEET, SOMEWHAT PSYCHOPATHIC SHAUNA. I love her. I love teen Shauna and adult Shauna (adult Shauna is one of my favorite actresses — this show has 3 actresses I really really like so I was thrilled by the casting and the performances even when I was iffy about the writing) and I even loved seeing Callie accidentally become much more like her mother towards the end of season 2. The writers did some serious work with Shauna's character, especially the teen version, and I think she ultimately ends up being my pick for Most Complicated Character. (Some might say that's Natalie but I think Nat is much easier to understand.)
I rewatched half the first season today just to see if I could pick up on anything that I might have missed the first time around and tbh I'll probably rewatch the whole thing again this week just to make sure I have the whole story (and all the little clues and breadcrumbs) down pat.
