Marseille
After five days in Barcelona it was time to hit the road again, our transport of choice this time was a train to Marseille, only five hours and a one hour stop over. It was comfortable and fast, my kind of transport.
Lucky for us taxis are incredibly cheap in most of Europe so we were able to splash out on one from the station to our accommodation, much easier when carrying around 30kgs of luggage. Most taxi drivers are the same really, but the one we got in Marseille was of a different sort, he drove a flash high tech car and kept to himself. But he got us to our house with ease and that’s all we were after.
Our initial exploration of Marseille produced mixed results, the walk to the old port was concerning and intimidating, yet once you get to the port you were transported back in time. It was picturesque and friendly, nothing like the typical French stereotype.
Our accommodation was once again fantastic, besides not knowing if the male was Laurence or Christophe.. we weren’t in as good of a location as in Barcelona but still very convenient. Unfortunately as we arrived on a Sunday most things were closed which changes the whole vibe of the area.
You know the feeling when you have a great idea but you get halfway through and realise you have made a terrible mistake but can’t do anything except continue on towards death? Well that is what happened to us on day two in Marseille when we thought it was a great idea to explore the Callanques National park.
Its funny when you don’t know what a journey entails but you know that it’s worth it, you can put yourself through almost anything just to get to the other side. You can convince yourself that it’s not so bad, you can tell yourself that there’s an easier way back, that if you just get there then it’ll be fine.
At least that’s what we were thinking as we stood at the top of a mountain looking down past the treacherous road ahead, to the crystal blue post card worthy water. We told ourselves that once we got down there, there would be an easier way back, a boat maybe or even a bus.. surely there could be no way that people were expected to walk back up this monstrosity. Yet of course this was not the first and definitely not the last time that we were to be sorely disappointed, what wasn’t disappointing though was the beach and the topless Europeans.
The mountains formed walls on three sides of the water with the fourth lined with yachts. The beach itself was small with rocks instead of sand, the water was a glistening pool. Being part of a national park there is no power or water to the ‘town’ (one restaurant and a couple vacant houses), it seemed to be a local’s oasis.
However somehow the magic of the beach did not soften the trek back to civilisation. As a person who doesn’t do well with heat or exercise, I was very sure I may indeed not make it, and the fact that we had taken the hikers path instead if the road made my fate all the more obvious.
I was going to die.. or at the least feel very unwell.
Alas with the help of my personal medic/support team I made it safely home and vowed never to walk again.

This could had been the last day of my life. I’ve certainly got a true sense of adventure and risky situations, haha.
