John wakes when a small hand hits him in the gut, the little girl tucked between him and Clarke starting to flail in her sleep. He reaches out and pulls her closer, opening his eyes to the dark room; the only light coming from the barely glowing embers of the fire. “Hey Madi, it's okay. You're okay,” he murmurs into her hair. Madi whimpers in her sleep and John hugs her close. “You're safe, Madi. Me and Clarke are right here,” he tells her quietly. Clarke shifts on the other side of Madi, but Madi stops thrashing and Clarke doesn't wake. John drops a kiss on the top of the girl's head as she settles back into sleep on his chest and sighs softly. 

But then there's a small scream and he sees Lexa sit up in the darkness, immediately reaching for the natblida trapped in a nightmare. Clarke wakes then, and he meets her blue eyes with his own as she sits up with Lexa. Her hand comes up to card softly through Madi's hair where her head rests against his collarbone and he gives her a tight smile; a silent I've got her. The blonde gives him a small nod and then turns to focus on Lexa and whichever one of the natblidas is awake now. He listens to her, Lexa and what sounds like Octavia murmur quietly for a few minutes before there's some shifting around and Aden moves to sleep between Lexa and Clarke while Shyne curls up on Lexa's other side. 

The kids’ nightmares have definitely gotten better over the past month, but he knows as well as anyone that nightmares don't just go away. It doesn't take as long to get everyone back to sleep, but John isn't tired anymore, so he lays there in the dark for a while, listening to the soft sounds of everyone else's breathing. After what he's pretty sure has been at least an hour, he gently removes Madi from his chest, tucking her in against Clarke's side. The blonde automatically pulls her daughter closer in her sleep and Murphy smiles.
