Erik Johnson - baby series
summary: Erik takes you to introduce your son to his teammates, and you can’t help but feel all the love in the world.
word count: 1.2k
hockey baby series masterlist / masterlist
note from the writer: shoutout to the lovely @burkymakar for not only giving me this adorable idea but also throwing me back into my EJ feels. (and picking the name)
“How soon do you think I can put him in skates?” Your husband asked, and you had a hard time stopping yourself from rolling your eyes. You knew he was joking, if the way he was grinning dumbly down at you in his typical fashion told you anything.
“He’s two weeks old, Johnson.” You sighed, smiling down at the carseat carrier your newborn was sleeping peacefully in. The faintest tufts of blonde hair peeked out from underneath the Avalanche hat you had put on him, and you knew that if he opened his eyes they’d be as blue as his father’s.
Erik had practice today, and decided it was the best time for you to introduce his little boy to the rest of the team. Gabe, of course, had already been sent dozens of photos and Sam met him over FaceTime a few nights ago.
“Everyone decent in there?” He called as he knocked on the locker room door, waiting for confirmation before pushing it open and leading you in. The sound woke up your baby, but surprisingly he didn't cry. You had made sure that he was fed and changed before leaving the house in preparation for this moment.
As soon as you were in the room, most of the guys crowded around you and Erik, peaking into the carrier your husband was holding tightly to be met with the bright blue eyes of your son.
“Let me see ‘em.” Tyson cooed, rushing over to you first. You giggled at his eagerness, unstrapping your baby and cradling him into your chest as the group slowly grew bigger around you. Erik placed a hand around your waist, and you’re pretty sure you heard Nate make a joke about how you were the perfect little family. You knew without a doubt that if Erik hadn't been so enamored by the smile on his son’s face, he would’ve made a comment about how Nate was just jealous.
“What’s his name?” Ryan asked, and you couldn't tear your gaze from your son as you answered.
“Robert Gabriel Johnson. Robbie, for short.”
The name hung in the air for a moment, a few of the guys ‘aw’-ing because they’re hockey players, and chirping is what they do, but Gabe, who had been in the process of extending a hand to stroke Robbie’s cheek, froze mid-reach.
“You serious, man?” Gabe questioned, looking at Erik like he hadn't told him that you were considering using his name—which you had been sure to mention at least once. Your husband nodded, toothless grin on full display as the two blondes hugged. Once they separated, Gabe turned to face you but his gaze was firmly on Robbie. “Can I hold him?” You nodded, shifting the baby over to his awaiting arms.
“Hey, EJ, what’s it like to finally have more teeth than someone?” Sam asked, grinning wide. The energy in the room was palpable—everyone was in a good mood.
“Oh, ha-ha. Very funny, Sammy.” Erik responded in a deadpan, but he was grinning in the very same way he had been for the past two weeks Robbie had been in your lives. Even on the late nights, the look of pure adoration and love never seemed to leave his face.
A few of the guys dispersed to finish getting ready for practice, but Cale, Tyson, Andre, and Mikko stuck around to tickle Robbie’s stomach from where he was still cradled in Gabe’s arms. Erik pressed a kiss to the side of your head before getting himself ready, considering he had shown up late. Someone bumped your hip, and you looked to see JT standing beside you, a small smile on his face as he watched his teammates fuss over the newborn.
“Look them, they’re children.” He nodded his head to Tyson, Cale, Andre, and Mikko, all four making faces just to see Robbie smile. You laughed, hip-checking the usually stoic redhead back.
“You know, you’re the same age as them, right?” You teased, JT’s only response was to shush you with a grin, before sticking his tongue out at Robbie and heading to his own stall. You shook your head at him, but were quickly distracted by Gabe handing Robbie back over. “Hi, sweetie.” You cooed, rocking him slightly. “Ready to go home?”
“Don’t leave without giving daddy a kiss.” Erik called, earning hoots and cheers from his teammates but only an eye roll from you, fighting your grin with all you had.
“Watch it, mister. Or you might not be getting anything from me.” You teased, but nonetheless complying when Erik leaned down to give you a sweet kiss, him repeating the action on Robbie’s forehead.
“Nah, you’re stuck with me now. Married and a baby. I’ve got you for life.” He joked, earning a chuckle. You felt anything but trapped in your relationship with Erik, and you were pretty sure you were the only one that could put up with the sheer chaos that entailed day to day life with him. But you wouldn't have it any other way.
“See you at home, Erik.” You shook your head at him, strapping Robbie back into his carrier. “And have fun at practice, boys.”
“Thanks, mom.” Andre called as you were exiting the locker room, chuckling to yourself as you trekked down the familiar halls of the stadium.
When Erik got home later that day, you and Robbie greeted him at the door. The smile on his face was wide and intoxicating, and it showed you just how much his little family meant to him.
“I could get used to this.” He mumbled against your lips, dropping his hockey bag at the door and making grabby-hands for his son. Usually, you’d chastise him for leaving his stuff in the entryway, but he looked so excited to hold his son that you letting it go and complied, handing him over.
You followed them into the living room, and not once did Erik take his eyes off of Robbie. You grinned, heart swelling as you heard him muttering to him about how practice went, and you were pretty sure you heard him say something along the lines of ‘uncle Gabe kept chirping me about how smiley you make me’ which made you absolutely melt. The sheer amount of love your husband shared with both you and his son was something you were certain you’d never take for granted.
“You know, you never answered my question from earlier.” Erik said to you, cradling Robbie and sinking into the couch as. His statement brought you back to reality, and the sight warmed you from your head to your toes, but even that wasn't enough to distract you from the mischievous grin on your husband’s face.
“And what was that?” You questioned, one brow raising as you tucked one leg underneath yourself and sat beside him, leaning into his side to admire your sleeping son.
“When can I put him on the ice? I want him skating laps around Landy before he can talk.”
