Who spread suicide claim? Kolkata doctor’s colleagues say story originated in ex-principal’s office
The article:
KOLKATA: Colleagues of the 31-year-old postgraduate resident doctor whose body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Aug 9 alleged that the hospital authorities’ initial claim that she died by suicide originated in then principal Sandip Ghosh’s office.
They questioned why the hospital authorities misled them when the death was a clear case of rape and murder. Supreme Court also raised concerns Tuesday about the hospital’s suicide narrative.
Hospital insiders disclosed that the decision to initially classify the death as a suicide was made in the office of Ghosh, who was later removed from his position following widespread protests and accusations of a cover-up.
According to the victim’s parents, they received two calls on the morning of Aug 9.
The first call at 10.53am from the hospital’s assistant superintendent Dwaipayan Biswas informed them that their daughter had fallen ill. Shortly afterward, a second call informed them that she had died by suicide. This news came as a shock to the family and colleagues, as signs of abuse and murder were reportedly evident on the doctor’s body.
The colleagues expressed outrage over the handling of the case, particularly the misleading information given to her parents. “Tell-all signs of sexual abuse and murder were all over her body. Why were the parents misled?” asked one of her fellow postgraduate trainees. Assistant superintendent Biswas had not acted on his own, another colleague said, alleging that “there was a plan to pass this off as a suicide”.
Colleagues also questioned the two-hour delay between the discovery of the body around 9am and when the parents were informed.
Ghosh had reportedly convened a meeting in the same seminar hall where the body was found, with at least two outsiders and several senior hospital officials. This meeting took place before the inspector in-charge of RG Kar hospital outpost was informed around 10.10am.
While Calcutta HC directed Ghosh to go on long leave, other hospital officials, including then medical superintendent Sanjay Bashist and the respiratory medicine department head Arunabha Dutta Chowdhury, have been transferred. “We are for a neutral probe and we also want the truth to emerge,” Bashist had said before he was transferred to CNMC.
(Poster's note: This article was posted on Aug 21, 2024. There have been significant developments in this case since then which I will try to post about as soon as possible. But I thought this was an important piece of information about what has been going on and all signs point to a significant coverup that indian public has been speculating since some of the other testimonies from the victim's colleagues.)

After the rape and murder of a junior doctor in a Kolkata hospital led to widespread protests, the West Bengal Assembly has unanimously passed a bill ordering life imprisonment for convicted rapists and the death penalty for rape which results in the death or vegetative state of the victim.
Several other proposals will also be enacted through the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill, including a special task force led by a female officer to accelerate investigations into rape cases, dedicated fast track courts, penalties for delays in investigations and a time limit of 21 days -- with a potential 15-day extension -- to issue a decision.
The bill will now go to the governor of West Bengal who is expected to sign it into law.
The new law was inspired following the death of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, wo was found dead with injuries indicating rape and strangulation in a seminar room in the hospital on Aug. 9. The murder sparked protests and rallies, drawing tens of thousands of people calling for justice. The suspect in custody, Sanjay Roy, stated he is innocent and is being framed.
Many in India see the bill as a step towards justice and assembly members from the opposition BJP party have lent their full support to its passage.
Sujata, a 55 year old protester who did not want to be identified by her last name, supported the bill. “You have to put some examples before the people so they will be aware of the punishment,” she said.
But others saw the bill as a knee-jerk reaction that precludes sustainable change.
“We need to look at not only the act, but what precedes the act,” said Piya Chakraborty, 39, a mental health rights activist. She believes India needs to focus on larger systemic reforms addressing rape culture and victim blaming.
The current proposal “is an easy way out for the state to say, ‘We’ve got a law,’” said Jhuma Sen, an Advocate practicing at the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. She says parts of the bill are unconstitutional as Indian law forbids the mandatory minimum punishment for any crime as being the death penalty.
Advocates who oppose the death penalty bill say that capital punishment policies do not deter crime. Instead, innocent people are framed and sentenced to death as government bodies rush to reach a verdict and appease the public.
Maitreyi Misra, the director of death penalty mitigation at the pro bono legal aid and research center Project 39A, stated that 95% of all Indian death row cases from 2000 to 2015 either ended in acquittals or commutations.
“Procedural safeguards are not being insured,” she said, pointing to flawed interrogations, improper collection of evidence, and lack of representation from lawyers -- all common during rushed investigations and trials. “What kind of justice are we aiming to have?”
At the rally that Chakraborty attended soon after she spoke to ABC News, a large blue banner condemned the bill, calling for transparent investigation and justice.
“Justice cannot be reduced to revenge,” she said.

Thousands of doctors across major cities in India, including the capital, New Delhi, on Tuesday, joined in on protests sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a trainee last week.
A 31-year-old female medical trainee was found dead at one of the largest government hospitals in the eastern city of Kolkata on Friday. Her body sustained multiple injuries and an autopsy report described evidence of sexual violence.
After the incident, doctors walked off their jobs at government hospitals, demanding better security and safety measures for health workers. The chief of the institution involved, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned on Monday.
Protests flare as doctors demand better safety
Protests picked up across government-run facilities in the eastern state of West Bengal, home to Kolkata, on Monday — with doctors saying they would suspend emergency services as well until at least Tuesday.
"As resident doctors, we are on the frontline and deal with lots of patients, which makes us quite vulnerable to these attacks," Doctor Rajat Sharma, vice president of India's Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), told DW.
"It's a scary situation which we see working on a daily basis. Doctors in West Bengal are protesting for their rights. We want to have better security for our resident doctors."
Around 75% of doctors in India have faced some form of violence, according to a survey by the Indian Medical Association.
Sharma's FORDA colleague Sarvesh Pandey told Indian media that doctors' demands included a specialized law protecting healthcare workers from violence on the job.
"There should be stringent security measures in hospitals and CCTV cameras should be installed," he said.
Students at universities in Kolkata also joined in on protests, demanding better safety measures for women in particular.
Sexual violence against women is a big problem in India.
The National Crimes Records Bureau reported that in 2021, an average of 86 rape cases were registered every day and 49 cases of crime against women lodged every single hour.
Protests spread to major cities, some services hampered
The incident has struck a nerve in the medical community who have repeatedly said they face threats from angry family members, especially in the case of bad news involving medical issues.
In the western Maharashtra state, home to financial capital Mumbai, around 8,000 doctors at government hospitals walked off their jobs on Tuesday.
In New Delhi, junior doctors wearing white coats held banners that read "Doctors are not punching bags" as they sat outside a big government hospital to demand an investigation into the incident.
Protests hampered medical services in the city of Lucknow in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, as well as in the popular tourist state of Goa.
How have Indian authorities responded?
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the case to be transferred over to a federal agency, meaning that Kolkata police will have to submit all case documents to the agency.
Kolkata police initially set up a special investigative team and arrested a man in connection with the case.
City police chief Vineet Kumar Goyal told reporters a case had been registered against the suspect under provisions of the law relating to rape and murder.
The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday sent notices to the director general of police and the chief secretary of West Bengal state, asking for a detailed report within two weeks.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the family of the victim on Monday, telling reporters later that police were "giving utmost importance to the investigation."

Kolkata Doctor Case: A Wake-up Call on Indian Women's safety at the Workplace and Tumblr Users Community's efforts in improving the Problem
About the “Kolkata Doctor” incident
On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, India, was murdered in a college building while retired in a seminar hall after a 36-hour shift in the hospital. An autopsy revealed that the victim had been r*ped and s*xually abused before being k*lled. On the next day, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the murder. Three days later, the enquiry was moved to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court, claiming that the Kolkata Police's probe lacked credibility. The tragedy has heightened the debate about the safety of women and doctors in India and demands a thorough investigation (Sayantani 2024).
Tumblr media
The incident was widely covered in the media, triggering outrage across the country. Within the medical community, student unions and the deceased's colleagues demanded justice and better security measures on campus. Moreover, there are widespread protests and strikes by resident doctors nationwide in response to the crime. Additionally, many celebrities posted on their social media accounts, asking for harsh punishment for the offenders and justice for the victim (HT News Desk 2024).
The incident drew international attention, resulting in protests by the Indian community abroad. Demonstrations were held in 130 cities in 25 countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan,...

Indian Women's Safety at the Workplace: A Social Media Discourse
In the wake of the Kolkata Doctor Case, discussions around women's safety in the workplace have arisen across various social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. Although India has significant legislative frameworks like the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, workplace harassment and violence against women remain prevalent. According to research, many Indian women workplace harassment go underreported due to fear of retaliation, disbelief in the justice system, and poor support structures (Ragavan 2021).
Regulations such as the POSH Act, when put into effect, have shown shortcomings, particularly in terms of guaranteeing that businesses follow its guidelines and provide secure, encouraging spaces for women to report such incidents (Bansal 2021). Social media has become a crucial platform for women to not only share their stories but also hold institutions responsible. For example, the #MeToo movement in India resulted in a series of high-profile resignations and a renewed focus on tackling sexual harassment in both formal and informal settings (Ahmad 2023).
Tumblr: a Platform for Social Change
In this context, Tumblr stands out as an essential forum for fostering conversations on women's safety and social justice. While Twitter is commonly used for short, rapid communication, Tumblr's long-form structure allows for more in-depth discussions (Oakley 2017). The network encourages its users to post essays, and discussions, reblog vital information, and even create art or graphics that raise awareness. It serves as a space for grassroots activism, where users from various backgrounds can engage with critical issues free from the often harsh, fast-paced culture of platforms like Twitter or Facebook (Reif, Miller & Taddicken 2022).
Tumblr's community-driven approach allows voices often sidelined in mainstream media to express their perspectives. Feminists, activists, and advocates for women's rights regularly use Tumblr to share their experiences, gather support for petitions, and organize protests or digital campaigns (Hannell 2024). Furthermore, Tumblr's format allows arguments to last longer, as reblogs and ongoing comments from diverse users ensure the topic doesn't fade quickly from public attention (Bourlai 2017).
Tumblr media
The Hashtags System
One of Tumblr's primary features is its hashtag system, allowing users community to connect and communicate across various postings and movements (Herron 2018). Several hashtags have emerged in India to raise awareness of women's safety, workplace harassment, and broader campaigning. Some of the key hashtags that have surfaced are:
#MeTooIndia: An extension of the worldwide #MeToo movement, Indian women have been using this hashtag actively to disclose their stories of harassment and abuse in the workplace, at home, and in public places.
#JusticeForWomen: Often used to highlight cases of sexual violence, demand justice for victims, and call for structural reforms and better legislation.
#WomenSafetyIndia: Focusing on the broader topic of safety for women in India, this hashtag covers everything from workplace harassment to public safety issues, rape cases, and the general lack of protection for women in the nation. It is employed to share resources, raise awareness, and promote initiatives for women's protection and empowerment.
Tumblr media
By using these hashtags, Tumblr users are not only raising awareness but also educating others about existing legal frameworks, discussing their limitations, and sharing resources that can be vital for women seeking help.
