Caladh (Kyles of Bute)

1888. Obviously inactive as a lighthouse for many years but charted as a daybeacon. Approx. 8 m (26 ft) round masonry tower with a window at thes top through which the light could be displayed. Lightphotos.net has a closeup photo, Wikimedia has a photo, and Google has a satellite view. Newman rediscovered this largely forgotten lighthouse in April 2002 but we need information on its history. Located on the west side of the entrance to Loch Riddon about 4 km (2.5 mi) northeast of Tighnabruaich, not far off the A8003 highway. Site open, tower closed. Owner/site manager: unknown. ARLHS SCO-304.

Remember the story about the someone stupid enough to piss of a god of plagues? Yeah, that was Cal. (First name Caladh, surname pending.) In his defense he was one of the original witches created for the purpose of bringing down Apollo's literal father. Regardless of whether there's any love lost between Apollo and Zeus, the fact in Cal's case is that he pissed off a god of plagues. Of course he definitely feels like he got the last laugh in that fight, ultimately. Over the centuries he's been through the ringer. For a long time he has dealt with addiction and the repercussions that it has had on his immortal life. Over the last century he has maintained a predominantly sober life, no longer feeding on addicts to get a high. He has been the head of the local vampire nest in Anguish for the last 60 years. He's thrilled to see the return of his sister's children. (The Hawthornes.)

Fish inhaled sharply, her eyes scanning their surroundings. Here it was, the silhouette between the columns. Watching them. She didn't look surprised -why would she?

Fun Fable Fact as we near the end of the series:

Ulysses’ name being Ulysses was a very last minute decision! The character was mostly developed (albeit INCREDIBLY different from how he is now) but I had a whole list of names which Jamie helped me narrow down!

Other possible names included:

Odysseus (too on the nose)

Telemachus (Telemachus the Telchin sounded a little too silly)

Argos (too similar to Project Argus)

Themistocles (recycled into “Themist” as a last name)

Neptune (again, a little on the nose)

Boromir definitely picked up the tune and would sing it to GG since their mother no longer could. And GG will sing it to her own daughter.

This is a lullaby that the nurse who raises GG in her mother’s absence sings. Definitely an old Minas Tirith lullaby. Also a lullaby that GG will sing to her children.

Cove was born in District 4 to Brahm and Netta Caladh, both fishermen. His mother sold 4's traditional bread under the hand to supplement their income; they were not exactly poor, but Netta craved more money. Cove, like everyone in his district, had learned to use weapons and hunt from a young age, claiming the water before he could walk. Unlike the others, Cove was trained by his father rather than at the academy, as they did not believe that investing so much time and effort in something was worthwhile. 

He met Marsh when he was approximately seven years old, they went fishing together, tied knots, and he taught her everything everyone else learned at the academy, as Marsh's parents did not want her to go in case she had a false hope of winning. She was the only girl struggling in the water, and it piqued his interest. She quickly revealed that she did not know how to swim. Cove joked that it would be ironic if she drowned before entering the games, but Marsh replied that she would rather die. Marsh frequently returned to the Caladhs for dinner following that day. Brahm and Netta liked her because she was shy, well behaved, and funny, and they soon became friends. Although the children around him were all eager to enter the games and win them, Cove could not care less. He was not concerned about winning or volunteering. But when it came time for the reaping, and Marsh was reaped, Cove volunteered without hesitation, wanting to protect her.

The arena was a forest, infested by multiple venomous snakes. Sunlight dappled through the dense canopy, creating a mosaic of light and shadow that concealed danger at every turn. A rustle in the undergrowth sent a shiver down Cove's spine; he knew he was being watched, hunted. Then, it happened. A searing pain erupted in his calf as a viper sunk its fangs deep. Cove reacted instinctively, his hand flying to the wound. Ignoring the burning sensation, he squeezed the bite, forcing out the dark, viscous venom. He sucked with all his might, spitting the tainted blood and venom onto the forest floor, a desperate gamble against the deadly poison coursing through his veins.

Cove's actions sent ripples of horror through the districts. He murdered Facet, a girl from District One, by drowning her in the river. It was a well thought out act of, a way to not only extinguish a life but also to inflict fear and demonstrate his power. He essentially drowned District One. He lured Facet in with Marsh's dead body and lured her into the water, biting and tearing at her until she gave up struggling. He ripped out her throat and then kicked her afloat, ensuring himself as the victor.

He won at age 12, two years before the infamous pair of his district won—Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta, making him the third victor of district 4, but due to the brutality of his games, they were erased, forged, and presented differently— a role that Cove had to play along with to survive. Now he mentors others from his district, refusing to give them any guidance on how to win because frankly, he couldn't care less.
