Happiness in Theravada Buddhism - 05
In the Vyagghapajja sutta of the Anguttara Nikaya, a householder named Dighajnu approached the Buddha and requested the Buddha to describe the things that would lead to welfare and happiness in this life and future lives for the lay people who enjoy worldly sensual pleasures. The Buddha said:
"Vyagghapajja, these four means lead to the welfare and happiness of a householder in this life. Which four?
Accomplishment of effort (utthana sampada), accomplishment of protection (arakkha sampada), good friendship (kalyanamittata) and balanced livelihood (sama jivikata)".
"Vyagghapajja, there are four means that will lead to the welfare and happiness of a householder in his future life.
Which four? Accomplishment of faith (saddha sampadã), accomplishment of virtue (sila sampada), accomplishment of charity (caga sampada) and accomplishment of wisdom (pañña sampada)".
Three kinds of happiness
Happiness within the Buddhist teaching can be considered to be of three kinds.
Sensual happiness
Mundane spiritual happiness
Supra mundane spiritual happiness
Sensual happiness
This is the happiness experienced from the pleasant sensations received from the five internal sensory bases of the eye (cakku), ear (sota), nose (ghana), tongue (jivha) and the body (kaya). When the internal sensory base of the eye receives an external sensory object which is a form (rupa), an awareness arises in the eye which is eye consciousness (cakku viññãna). The coming together of the eye, form and eye consciousness constitute sense impression (cakku samphassa). From sense impression arises feeling which could be pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. The same process takes place in relation to the other four internal sensory bases of the ear, nose, tongue and the body. When the eye, ear, nose, tongue and the body receive sense objects of forms, sounds, smells, tastes and touches respectively which are agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire and enticing, they lead to pleasure and happiness.

Think of āyatana as the muscle of the frog you dissected in your natural science class; and on which you applied some electrical current (indriya). The capability of the muscle (e.g. reflex,) can only be expressed through this electrical current.
In the same way, the descent (avakkanti) of the indriya, in the somewhat neutral & inert ability that is the āyatana of "seeing" (a.k.a. cakku - too often considered as the physical eye), will trigger the ensuing sensual process (viññāṇa > phassa > vedanā) - like the muscle will trigger a reflex. That applies to the other āyatanāni as well (”hearing”, “smelling”, ... “thinking”). (see SN 22.47 to understand how & why the indriya descends (avakkanti) in the āyatana).
