TayLiz Returns (August 2011 - January 2012)
Now, Taylorâs music suggests her and Liz got back together and broke up a bunch of times. Itâs kind of hard to pinpoint that exactly, since theyâre on tour together constantly and canât really have a break from each other that would be discernable by an outside source such as myself. However, this is the time for it! Time for mess! Time for fun!
9 August 2011 - Speak Now in Chicago. Taylor covers Sugar, Weâre Going Down by Fall Out Boy:
youtube
The lyrics that stand out here to me are:
Is this more than you bargained for, yet? Oh donât mind me, Iâm watching you two from the closet Wishing to be the friction in your jeans Isnât it messed up how Iâm just dying to be him? Iâm just a notch in your bedpost But youâre just a line in a song
Of course, once again. Taylor could just like the song. But I think itâs interesting.
10 August 2011 - Speak Now in Chicago night 2. Taylor covers I Want You to Want Me:
youtube
This one is REALLY INTERESTING in the wake of Lizâs breakup. Some choice lyrics:
I want you to want me I need you to need me Iâd love you to love me Iâm begging you to beg me
Oh, didnât I, didnât I, didnât I see you crying? Feeling all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dying
So does Taylor want her back? Or does she just like the song? Could go either way.
16 August 2011 - Taylor goes on a Girls Trip to Charleston with Liz, Caitlin, and a few other friends. Now, in a birthday post years down the line, Liz would reveal that Taylor specifically planned this trip because Liz was having a good time (Weâll get there in Late-Stage TayLiz). This feels like healing breakup blues to me.
While there, Liz tweets about possibly sharing a bed with Taylor again:
Taylor takes some great black and white photos of everyone that will show up in a later photo blog and Liz tweets about how much she loves retro photographer Taylor:
18 August 2011 - End of Charleston trip.Â
Liz tweets about Taylor healing her heartbreak blues:
That night is Speak Now in Alberta. Arm lyrics: âFind the Grace in the things you canât change, and help somebody if you can.â Taylor covers Complicated by Carolyn Dawn Johnson:
youtube
Choice lyrics, you know the drill:
Iâm so scared that the way I feel is written all over my face We used to laugh, we used to hug, the way that old friends do But now a smile and a touch of your hand makes me come unglued
I wanna hold you close, I wanna push you away I wanna make you go, I wanna make you stay
Another friend tells me that my name is always on your lips They say Iâm more than just a friend, they say I must be blind Well, Iâll admit Iâve seen you watch me from the corner of your eye
What an utterly appropriate post-Charleston trip song.
19 August 2011 - Speak Now in Alberta. Arm lyrics: âHey brother, weâre all learning to love again.â â Mat Kearnyâs Learning To Love Again.
22 August 2011 - Taylor posts âThe Charleston Photo blogâ on MySpace, featuring pictures from the Charleston trip:
So, clearly, they had a good time.
23 August 2011 - Liz quote tweets Taylor about the Charleston photo blog:
27 August 2011 - Speak Now in LA. Taylor covers Bette Davis Eyes:
youtube
Now, not only is this an EXTREMELY GAY COVER considering itâs about how beautiful a woman is, but Bette/Betty is a popular nickname for Elizabeth. And just look at the lyrics:
And sheâll tease you And unease you All the better, just to please you Sheâs precocious And she knows just What it takes to make a pro blush
IS THIS NOT EXACTLY WHATâS BEEN HAPPENING EVERY NIGHT DURING BETTER THAN REVENGE? TEASING? UNEASING? MAKING A PRO BLUSH??? Hmm, Taylor, what an interesting choice of a cover in the wake of the Charleston Trip...
Itâs worth noting that Liz also grew up in the LA area, making this even more special if it is about Liz.
5 September 2011 - Taylor and Dianna Agron meet for the first time at the Fairfax Flea Market after being introduced by mutual friend, Ashley, who was working for Diannaâs hairstylist at the time. Dianna had lowkey outed herself that summer with #Shirtgate and considering all the mess going on with Liz, itâs possible Ashley (among Taylorâs other friends) were looking to introduce her to someone else.
8 September 2011 - Taylor diaries about writing Red the previous day and then recording it:
In a later interview, Taylor described Red like this:
âSo this is a song that I wrote about the kind of relationship that is both the best thing and the worst thing at the same time and thatâs why you canât forget about it. Itâs called Red.â
So, I have a two big theories about Taylor writing and recording Red at this point in the timeline:
1) TayLiz have IMMEDIATELY broken up again after the Charleston trip, and thatâs why a mutual friend decided to introduce Taylor to Dianna.
2) Taylor and Liz are about to get back together again, and Taylor writes Red as a way of looking back on what she had with Liz back in 2009 before diving into a relationship with her again.
Iâm leaning towards 2, but 1 could be true too. Who knows?
13 September 2011 - Rodarte show at NY Fashion Week. Taylor is interviewed by Vogue while there. She says thereâs âjust been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash and burn heartbreakâ and that thatâs what the next album is about. This really makes me think TayLiz breaks up IMMEDIATELY again after Charleston.
Taylor also gives these four things sheâs learned about love and life recently:
Number two and four read like Jake shade to me.
16 September 2011 - Speak Now in Nashville. Taylor brings out Hayley as a special guest, they sing âThatâs What You Get.â Hayley would later say she was surprised Taylor didnât ask for Misery Business as Thatâs What You Get wasnât one of their more popular songs at the time. (Keep in mind this is the song TayLiz jammed to years ago at the Paramore concert):
youtube
This song makes me think thereâs a lot of back and forth happening between TayLiz right now if we look at it lyrically. However, things could be great in TayLiz land and Taylor just chose to perform this song because she knew Liz liked it.
19 September 2011 - Liz performs Jenny Turn Around with Tyler Hilton after Speak Now in Nashville. Tyler tells a story about how he went to the TS concert just before and Taylor had said that her and Liz both really love this song.
29 September 2011 - Liz tweets about crying to the song âThe Heart Wonât Lieâ by Vince Gill.
And thus, the back and forth continues.
16 October 2011 - Taylor recommends Lizâs YouTube channel and she gets an influx of subscribers:
30 October 2011 - Taylor diaries about being sick on tour, getting Meredith, and having written two songs in the last few days:
This usually signifies thereâs a lot going on for her emotionally, although itâs hard to tell what since we donât know which songs these are. (My best guess might be Treacherous??)
31 October 2011 - Liz tweets about getting married.Â
Taylor posts a photo of her, Liz, and Caitlin on Instagram:
8 November 2011 - TayLiz have a âsoul feeding timeâ together:
9 November 2011 - Taylor posts a wedding dress train picture to IG with the caption âDress trainâŚâ
12 November 2011 - TayLiz flirt more onstage during BTR:
18 November 2011 - Speak Now in Columbia South Carolina. Arm Lyrics: âWhere would we be today, if I never drove that car away?â These are from the song âDonât Think About Itâ by Darius Rucker. The lines before this go:
When we make choices we got to live with them Heard you found a real good man and you married him I wonder if sometimes I cross your mind Where would we be today If I never drove that car away?
To me, this plus the dress train pictures reads as Taylorâs reaction to Emily getting married the following day.
19 November 2011 - Emily gets married. TayLiz are papped leaving a restaurant in London:
27 November 2011 - CMT Awards in Nashville. Taylor arrives with Liz and others.
1 December 2011 - Taylor shoots her vogue cover where she cuts her bangs at the Bowery Hotel. Her band (including Liz) comes to support her and her and Liz take a photo with their matching hair:
13 December 2011 - Taylorâs birthday. Sheâs recording something in the studio and posts a photo to tease the Red album (presumably sheâs already titled it at this point).
Here are some pictures from the party:
22 December 2011 - Safe and Sound is released. TayLiz both tweet about it:
Taylor also posts about it on IG:
IN CONCLUSION: After Taylor pursuing her all summer, and Lizâs breakup with Jason, TayLiz took off again. They (maybe) shared a bed during Charleston, and Taylor certainly seems to have covered Bette Davis Eyes with her in mind. Their relationship is a little less obvious than they were in 2009, but that makes sense, considering the way Taylor has skyrocketed in popularity since then. Of course, they still are going to have some problems...

Presenting The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2020 Residential Architecture Finalists!
Presenting The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2020 Residential Architecture Finalists!
TDF Design Awards
Lucy Feagins

House At Otago Bay by Topology Studio. Photo â Paul Hermes.
Topology Studio, House At Otago Bay
Located on a lazy bend of the Derwent River in Hobart, this house by Topology Studio accentuates the drama of living on the waterâs edge. Connections with the landscape oscillate between enclosure and embrace. A courtyard, colonnade, ledges and terraces soften the distinction between house and landscape with a series of steps and paths.

Left: Bismarck House by Andrew Burges Architects. Photo â Caitlin Mills for The Design Files. Right: Beaumaris House by Clare Cousins. Photo â Sharyn Cairns.
Andrew Burges Architects, Bismarck House
The Bismarck House is the younger sibling of a pair of semi-detached dwellings in Bondi developed by the partners of Robert Plumb Build â Bill Clifton and Will Dangar â and designed by Andrew Burges Architects. The project responds to the house next door, and orchestrates the potential for social engagement between the more public areas of the house and the laneway running the northern boundary.Â
Revisit our feature on this project here.
Clare Cousins Architects, Beaumaris House
Sited on a corner block, Beaumaris House by Clare Cousins Architects asserts itself with a confident yet sensitive response to a somewhat atypical suburban condition. While monolithic in nature, the house subtly reveals itself as a sensitive suburban intervention, giving vegetated life back to the streetscape, and a considered familial sanctuary to those within.

Left: Davison Street by Archier & HIP V. HYPE. Photo â Tess Kelly. Right: Glassbook House by Sibling Architecture. Photo â Kat Lu.
Archier & HIP V. HYPE, Davison Street
Three built-professional couples came together to develop three sustainable townhouses designed by Archier with an 8+ star NatHERS rating. This project is the first to be created under the âCollaborative Developmentâ blueprint by HIP V. HYPE â a model that allows collaborators to join forces to create quality, more sustainable and financially accessible townhouse-style homes in urban locations.Â
Revisit our feature on this project here.
Sibling Architecture, Glassbook House
This two-storey addition to a Federation-style house in Temple, NSW by Sibling Architecture explores the home as a sanctuary that revolves around the ownerâs extensive collection of books. Social spaces are choreographed around the double-height bookshelf, which sits at the centre of the house and stretches to the ceiling, cutting across the three split levels of the home. Daylight filters through the southern glass brick facade deep into the interior.

Left: Quandong Cottage by Zana Wright. Photo â Caitlin Mills for The Design Files. Right: Tjuringa by Jesse Bennett Studio. Photo â Kristoffer Paulsen.
Zana Wright, Quandong Cottage
The design of this small off-the-grid dwelling comprises separate sleeping and living pavilions, with all other functions located outdoors on the undercover deck. The project by Zana Wright is nestled into a hill in the rural Byron Bay hinterland with a north aspect overlooking a billabong and lush native bush.

Jesse Bennett Studio, Tjuringa
An adaptable new family home in Toowoomba by Jesse Bennett Studio conjuring the essence and character of a previous existing 1960s house on site. Taking inspiration from a traditional Aboriginal Tjurunga artefact, sweeping shapes and rounded edges were adopted early in the design development phase, becoming a suitable design motif for many elements throughout the building.

CLT House by FMD Architects. Photo â Dianna Snape.
FMD Architects, CLT House
An existing home is reconfigured and extended by FMD Architects via an upper floor addition, featuring cross laminated timber (CLT) throughout. The rhythmic quality of the sawtooth roof to the new bridge structure is both lyrical and rational. The pitched roofs to the north integrate an extensive solar array with high level windows at its peak to capture the changing light throughout the day.

Left: Ruckers Hill House by Studio Bright. Photo â Rory Gardiner. Right: The Good Life House by MRTN Architects. Photo â Photo â Dave Kulesza.
Studio Bright, Ruckers Hill House
A prominent, corner-sited Edwardian in Northcote has been restored and enlarged by Studio Bright, with new living spaces in a separate rear-garden pavilion. The completed house is the perfect blend of playful and practical, with versatile interior spaces, and a greater connection to the garden.
Revisit our feature on this project here.
MRTN Architects, Good Life House
Recognising the number of nearby overscaled developments not in keeping with the dominant character and scale of the street, the clients of this Fairfield project engaged MRTN Architects to design a new home more suitable to its context. By cleverly concealing a second storey, and adopting a sympathetic materials palette, this home perfectly nestles into its suburban streetscape, while internally adopting the feel of a rambling farmhouse.

Left: Highgate Park House by Vokes & Peters. Photo â Christopher Frederick Jones. Right: Woollahra House by CO-AP Architects. Photo â Ross Honeysett.
Vokes and Peters, Highgate Park House
An extended original cottage in Brisbane designed to manage privacy, while engaging with its adjacent hilltop park. A thick brick âgarden wallâ surrounds the perimeter of the property and its courtyard garden, while the house is planned around two principal circulation corridors: one open to the street, and another more private route servicing the bedrooms. Architecture by Vokes and Peters, with interior design by Georgia Cannon and landscape architecture by Dan Young Landscape Architect.
CO-AP Architects, Woollahra Courtyard House
A new four-bedroom home designed for an empty nester couple and three generations of extended family visitors. Located on the site of a former 1970s single-storey courtyard house, the new house by CO-AP Architects takes cues from its predecessor to feature its own central courtyard. The project also facilitates disability access, and responds to its current neighbouring context of two-storey dwellings.

Left: RaeRae House by Austin Maynard Architects. Photo â Peter Bennetts. Right: Fitzroy North House 02 by Rob Kennon Architects. Photo â Derek Swalwell
Austin Maynard Architects, RaeRae House
This new five-bedroom family home by Austin Maynard Architects incorporates the front of two pre-existing terrace homes in Fitzroy North. A glazed, setback entry unites the two structures and forms the gateway to the new build with an innovative mountain-like roof. While unconventional in appearance, this is a highly functional and practical house, with exciting moments of discovery throughout.Â
Revisit our feature on this project here.
Rob Kennon Architects, Fitzroy North House 02
This Fitzroy North project by Rob Kennon Architects challenges the traditional rhythm of a house with a backyard. The home instead consists of two buildings â one a contemporary interpretation of a workersâ cottage, followed by the main two-storey house â with a main central garden in between them, then a second garden at the very back. By rethinking a typical terrace house, this project creates a freedom and openness not often experienced on tight inner-city blocks.

Left: Park Road House by Lineburg Wang. Photo â Christopher Frederick Jones. Right: Balmain Rock by Benn & Penna. Photo â Tom Ferguson.
Lineburg Wang, Park Road House
An existing two-storey Queenslander is reconfigured to establish a greater aspect to its generous site. Early testing by Lineburg Wang found the removal, instead of addition, of rooms would best satisfy the client desire for enhanced indoor-outdoor living. The regulatory pool fence â typically an obstruction between house and pool that seeks to be hidden â was embraced and celebrated as a full-height metal screen enveloping the north and eastern elevations.
Benn + Penna Architecture, Balmain Rock
An extension and restoration project of an 1870s sandstone cottage in Balmain East. Benn + Penna conceived the new extension as an augmented duplicate of the existing cottage, featuring cement akin in weight and texture to sandstone. The complete home is a cohesive, protected space with interiors that feel as though carved from the one rock.

Left: CLT House by Emma Mitchell Architects. Right: Waratah Secondary House by Anthrosite Architects. Photo â Christopher Frederick Jones.
Emma Mitchell Architects, CLT House
This Emma Mitchell Architects project in Anglesea explores the possibilities of cross laminated timber (CLT) construction, engaging with site specificity, environmental considerations, structural solutions and cost efficiency. An L-shaped plan provides ground level wheelchair access, garden connection, solar gain and wind-protected outdoor spaces.
Anthrosite Architects, Waratah Secondary House
A secondary, 60 square metre dwelling designed by Anthrosite Architects, located on a dual frontage site. Habitable rooms are elevated 1.2 metres above ground level to suit the requirements of a flood prone site. The use of standard blockwork, structural insulated panels, prefinished fibre cement panels. and modular components made this a time-efficient, low-maintenance build taking just three months.
The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2020 Residential Architecture award is presented by Brickworks.
Brickworks Building Products is one of Australiaâs largest building products companies, with a stable of brands dedicated to manufacturing high-quality products for Australia and the world for over 100 years.

Drum roll pleaseâŚ. in partnership with Laminex, today we share the finalists in the 2020 The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards!
From incredible Australian homes in the Residential Architecture category; to thoughtful, detailed craftsmanship in the Handcrafted category; to innovative and inspiring ideas in the Sustainable Design or Initiative category, the thing I love most about our Awards program is the broad range of projects it encompasses â big and small! It really presents such a thorough and varied snapshot of the design landscape in this country, and if this Awards program is anything to go by, thereâs so much to celebrate.
We have 119 finalists (!) across 10 categories â Residential Architecture (supported by Brickworks), Interior Design (supported by DeLonghi), Landscape Design, Lighting Design, Furniture Design (supported by Jardan), Textile Design, Handcrafted, Sustainable Design or Initiative (supported by Country Road), Collaboration and Emerging Designer (supported by Phoenix Tapware).
The shortlisting process this year was not for the fainthearted! Over countless emails, Zoom calls and a couple of socially distanced meetings, we worked alongside our 25 judges to refine each shortlist. Honestly â it wasnât easy, the calibre was so high across the board, and weâre so grateful for every single entry. THANK YOU to everyone who entered, and of course, to our expert judges for lending their time and wisdom to the process.
While each shortlisted project is listed below, the photographs here represent only a small sample of the lineup! You can see more about each finalist right now on our Awards website.
