RDR Essentials is a weekly newsletter of alternating genres that outlines key releases of the past month, upcoming events around Seattle and happenings in the specified music genre.

Made in collaboration between Rainy Dawg DJs and the Music Director.

Releases: 

Malik Djoudi - Tempéraments (Nouvelle édition) 

While I don’t speak a lick of french, these muted synths and sparse harmonies have a certain je ne sais quoi. Seriously though, this french pop veteran releases a new edition of his gorgeously minimalist album Tempéraments, featuring four new tracks. “Instant réversible” makes enthralling use of detuned pipes and behind the beat builds to create a natural raise of energy and hope. He also collaborates with French singer-songwriter Juliette Armenet on the new version of “Foulie douce”, where their styles combine in a rainbow of harmony and synth-pad-paradise. The last two tracks “Sequence con (Piano-vox)” and “Éspourser la nuit (Piano-vox)” center around a dark piano and emotionally raw vocals. These two bare-bones songs provide a rainy-drenched window into the soul of Djoudi, who has transitioned from the English speaking band Moon Pallas into a realm that’s a bit closer to home. While four new songs may not seem like a big addition, they give his well-received sophomore effort an entirely new dimension in his musical journey and the French pop scene as a whole.

“Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), also known as acid, is a hallucinogenic drug. Effects typically include altered thoughts, feelings, and awareness of one's surroundings. Many users see or hear things that do not exist. Dilated pupils, increased blood pressure, and increased body temperature are typical. Effects typically begin within half an hour and can last for up to 12 hours. It is used mainly as a recreational drug and for spiritual reasons.”

To call it good would be an understatement. To call it jazz would be an overstatement. To call it experimental feels just right.

Gil Scott-Heron & Makaya McCraven - We’re New Again: a Reimagining by Makaya McCraven

Gil Scott-Heron was born in 1949 and passed in 2011. Between then and his death, he invented rap with “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” gave a voice to Black struggle after the radical memory of the Civil Rights Movement was appropriated by white liberals, published novels, poems, and a biography, campaigned to end the South African Apartheid, was caged in a New York State prison after fighting drug addiction, and released I’m New Here a year before he passed. In We’re New Again, Chicago based-drummer Makaya McCraven revisits Scott-Heron’s last album. McCraven’s re-imagining is like bringing Scott-Heron back into life and makes many songs and spoken-poetry tracks completely different. With support from other jazz musicians from the very active Chicago scene such as Brandee Younger, guitarist Jeff Parker, and bassist Junius Paul, McCraven turns “I’m New Here” into a jazzy gospel, “I’ll Take Care of You” into a very introspective R&B, and “New York is Killing Me” sounds like a post-bop jazz/blues reflection. A great homage.

Ethan Gruska - En Garde

In an interview with Uproxx, LA-based producer and singer-songwriter Ethan Gruska says that four words to describe his music is “textural, impressionistic, anemoia, introspective,” and I’d say he hits the nail right on the head. It’s hard to pin down what genre it is, but atmosphere is everything in En Garde. It’s like a game of I Spy for your ears, as every song is bursting with odd pops of sound and inventive production. Gruska’s trademark style of piano-playing (a jazzy, drippy, warping sound?) wrings out melancholy tunes like a wet rag. That doesn’t mean that accessibility is laid to the wayside, as Gruska has an ear for poppy hooks and melodies. Stand outs are “Event Horizon,” which I can only describe as eerie and comforting at the same time, and “Enough For Now,” featuring background vocals by Phoebe Bridgers. I recommend listening to this album at 2 in the morning.
