Eeee I love your mermen! I love that they don't have a human skin tone and that their upper halves have the same brilliant patterns and colors that seamlessly caery over from their tail, making them look like a cohesive being as opposed to a "half-and-half" with a clear split between humanoid and fish.
I was just wondering about if you have any headcanons about them. Do they live nomadically or do they have underwater settlements? Can they breathe air and survive on land, and how long can they be out of water? Can they get legs and assume a humanoid "land form" or do they permanently have a tail by default? Can they speak human languages?
fgsdfgnsdfgjdfgsdfgksd
First of all, thank you so much for the compliments! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧ I'm glad that you like my mermen art that much :')
I do have a couple of headcanons but I haven't developed a full story or made any character background yet hehehe, although it is something that I would like to do soon! I've always imagined potential storylines with them as main characters :D
Putting that aside, I have a pretty solid idea about their biology and social structure. They behave in a way similar to their fish counterpart (I often use real fish species to create mermen designs); this means that they vary in size, there are predators and preys and they can form shoals/communities or live alone depending on the species. Their sexuality also mimics the patterns of some fish species but they are, in their majority, hermaphrodites or have the hability of change their biological gender depending on the situation.
I guess there could be some small settlements, specially around reef barriers but I picture them having a pretty nomadic life. They cannot breath above the water but they can hold their breaths for a somewhat long period of time, let's say half an hour, it also depends on the physical condition of the merman. They do not have a humanoid form in my universe hahaha! It would be fun tho... I might do some art about it, who knows 🐟
As for their language, they have their own system. It is nothing like any human dialect and it works diferently because... well, water XD. They use mostly echoes and noises. They also write and draw hyeroglyphs :)
I think that summs up everything pretty well! (。・∀・)ノ゙

Steffen Röder emailed a photo from Munich, Germany: “Hi Marc! This St. Paddys I had to be in the hospital in which ill spend the next three weeks due to a chronik pain issue. I was able to sneak in a (light) pint tho and have my banjo with me. I sang some tunes at the nearby lake with noone but some frogs around and enjoyed the moment. I hope you had a good one too! Greetz from Munich, Rusty!”
Gerald Guinn of The Secret Commonwealth emailed a St Pats photo: “Hi Marc! Glad you had good St. Pat's/Birthday! The Secret Commonwealth did as well. We had shows on all three days of the weekend, culminating with our 31st anniversary St. Pat's show at Cedar Glade Brews, in the "city of our birth", Murfreesboro, TN (see attached pic) Now it's on to finishing up album #5! We hope to have it out in early summer. Best!”
Brenda Richardson sent a photo for St Patrick’s Day: “I walked with a group from the YMCA in the 5K St Patrick’s Day Race in Colorado Springs. We heard some Celtic music along our route!”
Michael Maloney emailed a St Patrick’s Day photo: “Morning Marc! Happy belated St. Patrick's Day and Birthday! I feel like I'm still recovering. I play solo at Hugh O'Neill's in Malden, and several shows with my bandmates, The Boston Harbor Bhoys (Waltham Sr. Center, Medford's Ford Tavern, Framingham Elks fundraiser, Quincy's Assembly, and Boston's Green Dragon).
So many songs, so many memories. I loved playing Hugh O'Neill's, where a table of young people requested The Saw Doctor's "N17" and ran out from their tables on the refrain each time to shout out "and the grass is green!".
To the Sr Center in Waltham where the ENTIRE room of 100 people got all the hand - claps right on "Wild Rover" by the 2nd refrain, and the beautiful emotions expressed from our rendition of Danny Boy.
To guests at the Framingham elks getting up to do all the dance moves to "The unicorn song", to seeing old fans from the South Shore of Boston that we haven't seen in 4 years requesting "Raglan Road", to jumping around The Green Dragon with my harmonica and tambourine leading hand claps on 'Finnegan's Wake" getting the whole bar clapping together.
Agh, it was all so wonderful, went through a range of song styles and eras in the Celtic music catalogue, and it was wonderful connecting with audiences from the 20's up to their 90's, who all appreciated the music and experience in their own ways.
It was one for the books! “

For the character bingo: Fatima, Jademis, Caeris, Louise, and Joyce Discoelysium :)
Oh dear, this meme was sleaping in my folder for days now. "^^ And I made them at like 3 AM in the morning so that is why they actually look a bit unhinged :D. Also some of them look kind of empty, but imagine everything I painted ~something~ in as affirmative ^^
<3 FATIMA <3
I am truly unhinged about her. Fatima is the best and still one of my favorite characters in the trilogy... Everything about her is so fucking important... And she deserved so much better.
<3 JADEMIS <3
She deserved so much better will be a theme here... Jade is precious and capable at the same time. And she is also one of the sane ones, which is very refreshing. ^^ I love her a lot and so does Delta ^^
<3 CEARIS <3
She is such a delight to write! Such an insane but amazing queen! Also there is a lot about her that I find interesting and even if she is too afraid of being vulnerable to really show it, it is quite fun to think about. (And I am noticing right now, that I totally forgot to cross of the "I can talk about her forever" one. Because I sure could!)
<3 LOUISE <3
No comments here. I just love one tree climbing girl. Mateo WILL cry about her backstory and Locke should leave her alone because she is amazing and only deserves the best!
<3 JOYCE <3
Oh my god, I love Joyce so much! She is awful, she is helpful, she is insane, she is the only one who knows whats going on, she is a monster, she is naive, she is rich, she is suffering, she is ruining everything and a victim of the circumstances that she herself chose and I fucking love her! Boy could I talk about Joyce and can she talk about the world around her! <3
