Month three of learning guitar - What To Raise is currently looking not just doable, but actually shockingly easy. Not shockingly the hardest part is gonna be that solo but honestly even the lead guitar part of this song is basically just rhythm. I gave myself a mission to learn this song within a year and now it's looking like I might be able to do it in just 4 months or so.

Hey,
So, normally I am a really shy person on the internet, but you made this beautiful song Sky Clear Blue, and I just have to ask.
Do you have the notes for that song? And would you mind sharing them?
I have a guitar and I would love to attempt playing that lovely song.
Hello shy person on the internet! omg I got an ask about The Song! :D *sounds of angel-coded delight*
Tumblr media
I don't have anything beyond Steph's lyrics written down, unfortunately - HOWEVER, I could absolutely scribble some down for whatever parts you're curious about, if you like!
If we're only talking guitar chords, it's a really nice and simple (comfy!) progression: alternating G and Cadd9 for most of the verses, one loop of G - Am - C - D in the lead-up to the chorus, and the chorus is C - G - Dsus - D. (The very final chord is a Dsus because ✨ambience✨ and open-endedness vibes and... ok that's not what I was supposed to be talking about here oops)
Caveat to the above: wherever there's a D chord, I alternate randomly between plain D and Dsus with no particular pattern, and I may have replaced some Cs with Cadd9 or vice versa here and there. Either of the two works; it's just easier to play Cadd9 between two Gs. 🙂
Technically I played the same-ish chords in the transposed a capella version, too, but simpler and on my mini guitar/guitarlele which is tuned differently so the result is a slightly off-key D - Gadd9 (verse) and G - D - A (chorus).
Before I go off waffling delightedly for WAY too long (omg someone asked me about an Art I've made I can talk for HOURS hello you're my new best friend)... Is there any part/voice/instrument in particular that you're curious about? Because, again, I could absolutely scribble down some sheet music for this (or maybe even wrangle GarageBand to output some for me; I think that's a feature it has??). I don't normally write stuff down much when I play because I find it easier to just noodle around and memorise and I don't tend to get too complex with arrangements, but I do read musical notation and guitar tabulature and I would be a completely normal amount of very excited to talk and write more about this as you can see SO. Yeah. Just hmu if you want more detail about guitar chords or notes or some other stuff; I'd be BEYOND thrilled to share.
Actual view of me reading and answering this ask ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Tumblr media
beardo: *goes to town on ask*
(PS. I need to point out that I'm only responsible for the particulars of the arrangement, the physical singing/playing, and the time signature - Steph based her song upon another one, a recording of which she kindly sent me; it's got slightly different lyrics and a somewhat simpler chord progression, is in 4/4 time and gives sort of... cute country ballad vibes? I riffed off of the melody a bit and the rest... really, the arrangement did what the characters in my stories tend to do, and kind of just wrote itself.
Either way, I don't want anyone to imagine I came up with the melody or the overall shape of this song myself! I just kneaded it a bit and fought GarageBand to record it. 💜)
gonna tag @klikandtuna and @suzypfonne in case you fine humans want to listen in to continued talk about this song - you're both HIGHLY RESPONSIBLE for these amazing last 24 hours of my life and the existence of this piece of music after all

This year I've tasked myself with learning an average of one new piece on the guitar every two weeks, or 26 total pieces in 2024. These are mostly intended to be rhythm guitar pieces for vocal accompaniment so they can be simple af if lead or fingerpicking feel inaccessible, but I've promised myself to give lead and fingerpicking at least a solid effort for each piece regardless. Super pleased to declare the first cover accomplished a paltry three days into the year! Acoustic guitar cover 1/26: Skylight, by Pinegrove This song is WILDLY easy to pick up if you already know open chords. You can get into some fun stuff with Cadd9 and Em7 but you fully do not have to. The whole piece is in 4/4, and the only weird thing is that sometimes a chord carries on for a bar longer than you'd expect. To make life even easier, the band has posted the chords to their website, so there's no staring at various free tabs and wondering which one is the closest.

I think it might be Begin Again! That was the first song I learned on the guitar and Cadd9 is heaaavvily used in that song in the verse, chorus, and bridge
okay SO last night i mixed up the date she cut her bangs and straightened her hair— i thought it was december 30, which would’ve made begin again almost impossible, but it was december 2! which makes it not only possible, but highly likely!!
(for those who weren’t on for my midnight insanity, i’m trying to figure out where this picture comes from)

anything with C major and A minor chords needs to be injected in my veins
Like dust in the wind…and then Свет because they both have the same idea? With the Cmaj7, Cadd9, etc etc. Light just has a G and F added to it

Hey what ever happened to Cadd9? It introduced me to my favorite chord :)
Cadd9 is actually a bonus track on my EP Hardly Trying!
I did a challenge last year where i wanted to write, record, and release, a 7 track EP in one month all on stream. At 11PM with a day to spare i decided to re-record Cadd9 as a bonus.
It's been long enough so here have the soundcloud post for it

HI EFFI I THINK I KNOW WHAT SONG SHE WAS RECORDING IN THE AUGUST 2012 TAYLOR NATION PHOTO!! month and months and months ago i was going insane trying to figure out what song it was and I posted on tumblr asking if anyone knew what chord she was playing, and a ton of people said it was a Cadd9, which is heavily used in begin again! i went through the other contenders, and begin again was the only song with obvious Cadd9 use, but I kept saying there was no way because it didn’t look like anything in blackbird studios that i could find!! BUT that picture you found totally looks like bluebird and + the chord being used… BEGIN AGAIN!!!!
that's so cool, thanks for letting me know! I wonder why she didn't end up playing the guitar on the song though! I also think that sometimes we forget about how sometimes songs take multiple days to record, because she wasn't wearing a dress on the December 13th pic, the one with the red shoes. also props to her for wearing such a light dress in winter lol

Cadd9 brings me to orgasm bro
it's so fucked that no one experiences music in the same way and that humans are shit at verbalising their emotions so we will never truly be able to talk about how our favourite song feels or why that chord makes you cry or why that riff makes my heart start beating faster. how fucked is that.

Claire. I need so much more context on your last post. How long have you been trying to teach yourself guitar. What of picture. Why aren’t you sleeping.
i've been messing around for like. 1 hour? two? and its based on this picture! which i painstakingly colorcoded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
taylorpictures.net uploaded it to "others-miscellaneous" on august 12, 2012. i would kill to know the caption/original context for this photo and google is NOT being helpful trying to track down the original source. i'm currently resisting the urge to google photos of various studios taylor worked in. current guess is recording treacherous or come back be here, but who knows
edit: apparently its a cadd9! treacherous is maybe still on the list, and wanegbt and 22 are possible contenders (22 especially given that taylor is credited for guitar and she recorded it closest to august 12)!
