Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: I may have activated my own trap card
Spoilers for a movie that's two months old and also out on home release.
Tumblr media
So, Miles, Gwen, Pavitr (Spider-India), and Hobie (Spider-Punk) all seem to have modern left-wing politics, though Gwen's got edited out. Hobie's introduction specifically says he hates "fascists", which carries over from the original comics.
By the time Hobie came around, I assumed he was just another poser, cooler than the hero rival character, expressing generic leftie politics, and his punk ethos wasn't sincere.
Which is exactly what the writers wanted me to think.
Not only is Hobie perfectly sincere about being anti-authoritarian, but he's been helping Miles since before they even met. He's been blatantly stealing junk from the Spider Society to build his own universe-jumping watch, and disguising it as petty vandalism.
He even tries to talk Miles out of trying to join the Spider-Society before the reveal that Miles himself is an anomaly, and the SS (geddit?) tries to detain Miles.
When Hobie says he's against authoritarianism, he really means it.
Speaking of the left-wing politics, Miles has a "#BLM" pin on his bag. It's very visible while he sits next to his dad.
Who's a cop.
(TANGENT: A few years ago, someone drew a stupid, very bad comic where Spider-Man (Peter Parker) was a) black, b) hated cops, and c) assaulted and subdued riot cops when they asked him for help.
That the comic didn't even show the riot cops were wrong. We were just supposed to assume they deserve to be left to the mercy of an angry mob.
Tumblr media
Also, in this comic, Uncle Ben was killed by a cop, not a random thug who Spidey could've stopped but chose not to. Which makes me wonder how that would shake out.
It's kind of weird for someone to look at a character who's about personal responsibility to an unhealthy degree, and use him to express their collectivist anti-cop terrorism fantasies. That, or they didn't think through their fantasies.)
During Spider-India's opening, Miles says "I love Chai Tea!" And Pavitr goes on a rant about how "Chai" means "tea". Later on, The Spot says he's been on a "journey of self-discovery", and Pavitr basically says he's racist.
Which is a tad ironic, because Spot is literally white. And also because Pavitr is the one making the racist assumptions.
And I personally go to a church - in England - that has a lot of non-white non-British people. Mostly Africans. And me, of course. I wonder if any Asians ever went on a journey of self discovery to South London.
And I don't just mean as a cab driver.
Tumblr media
"Wait, SYABM, didn't you move to the UK for self-discovery?"
W-well, yes, partially.
Aside: I made the mistake of watching a Youtube video with the Chai Tea joke, and then I looked at the comments.
One guy said "tfw when Twitter users write a movie". An idiot (with much more upvotes) said "bro out here wanting blatant racism in movies".
...When the whole point of the joke is that the racism is not blatant.
It's only "blatant" if you're insufferably Twitterized. There are loads of redundant phrasings in English, like "ATM machine", and words often shift when they're adopted from other languages.
Also, "I dislike this joke" is not the same as "I want racism in this movie", when the "racism" in the movie is only there so it could be mocked.
One of the issues with putting real world movements in worlds that are drastically different - it's one of the main selling points of the franchise - is that it may seem odd that those movements exist in very similar form to the IRL version.
For example, Miles supports BLM in both his video game, and this. Which makes me think "did Trayvon Martin get shot in Florida? How about Mike Brown? Wouldn't the existence of supervillains throw things into a new perspective?"
Did I mention the giant George Floyd-style "REST IN POWER" mural to Miles' dead uncle? I cringed at that in the Wakanda Forever trailer, and I rolled my eyes at it here.
Floyd wasn't a saintly martyr, he was an unlucky violent thug.
Also, Aaron was a supervillain killed by another bad guy who nearly destroyed the city, not a cop.
Also, this is at a party to celebrate how Miles' dad is about to be promoted. Assuming Floyd died and the 2020 protests/riots also happened in Miles' universe, then it seems a tad tasteless to have a mural inspired by an anti-cop movement overlooking it, even if the party is not full of cops.
Tumblr media
Spider-India lives in "Mumbattan".
The people who settled the Manhattan area were originally Indian. But the other type of Indian. The Indians we're not supposed to call Indians anymore.
The name "Manhattan" is even Native American.
The first permanent settlement was Dutch. Then the English got it. I guess the English could've shipped Indians to the other side of the world and eventually ceded the area to them, or maybe in this world India was a world-conquering superpower and Mumbattan is the result of...importing Native Americans?
Which would make Pavitr's complaint that "the British stole all of our stuff and put it in their museums" seem a tad hypocritical.
Of course, since I wrote all that, someone reminded me that Pavitr explicitly says the joint is in India.
"SYABM," you say, "you're overthinking this."
Yes, I am. Because the filmmakers didn't think it through. If you want to use ha-ha-funny to make a serious point, you invite examination of that point.
Tumblr media
Miles (as Spidey) now works with his dad, though he disguises his voice. At one point, Miles tells his father that men bottle up mental health issues.
This is true (and ironic, considering Miles is hiding who he is from Jeff), but it's not the first time I've seen some progressive work try to address men's issues in an very awkward way. At least here, it's played for comedy.
Also, seems a tad hypocritical coming from a guy who wears a "#BLM" pin in the presence of his cop father.
Also, if you work the timeline, that would mean Miles was about 7 or 6 when BLM started. Which means he's gone most of his life knowing nothing else.
Tumblr media
There was a controversy over a "protect trans kids" trans flag in Gwen's room, which was apparently edited out.
IMO, it seems a tad strange for a girl who feels estranged from everyone in her world to join a social movement, but what do I know? Maybe it was there before then.
Some people came to the extremely logical conclusion that Gwen herself is trans. Even though she's distinctly physically feminine and possibly too young for puberty blockers depending on Earth 65′s laws.
Like the "oh great, it's Liv" shippers, people are reaching really hard to see what they want to see.
Some people have said that Gwen's issues with her dad and herself seem awfully similar to the issues LGBTQIA2S+ kids go through.
Gee, it's not like, y'know, feeling estranged from one's family is a common theme in fiction about teenagers and superhero, and the whole "superpowers = minority" thing has been done to death for most of the past century.
Perhaps most notably - and clumsily - in X-Men.
youtube
I'm not saying this wasn't the intended subtext. I'm saying if it was, it would just be really, really cliche.
Tumblr media
There's this recurring theme of people telling miles "how [his] story is supposed to go".
When he's at a meeting with his parents and his guidance counselor, the lady says his story of being a black-Latino son of an immigrant would sound great in the college application letters. His mom is a tad miffed, given that they're a) solidly middle class, and b) as a Puerto Rican, she considers herself American.
Tumblr media
Miguel (Spider-Man 2099) doesn't want Miles in the multiversal council of Spiders, because Miles was bitten by the radioactive spider from a different universe. Which is why his local Spider-Man died, and the spider's home dimension has no Spider-Man.
Also, Miguel is fixated on "canon events". The idea that there are certain things, especially tragedies, that have to happen to Spiders, or their entire universe falls apart.
And he knows this, because he tried to take over for a version of him that got shot dead by a thug. Tried to raise his daughter.
And he watched as the universe collapsed in front of him.
So he's projecting his own guilt onto Miles, a tad.
According to TVtropes and other sources, this was actually about the people who didn't accept Miles as a replacement Spidey, possibly out of racism.
Yeah, that's real hard-hitting topical meta-commentary about a character who debuted 12 years ago. 8 years when the first movie came out.
I'd also like to point out that despite stereotypes of comic book fans, certain minority successors to banner superheros have been fairly well-received. Like Jaime Reyes, or Cassandra Cain.
(Note: I wrote that before the Blue Beetle movie came out. And flopped.)
And, of course, loads of people like Miles specifically because he's a minority Spidey, which is also racist, just from the other direction. In fact, a lot of his fans seem to forget the "Latino" part of "Afro-Latino". From what little I've seen of Miles early comics, they did actually put strong emphasis on his race.
I also suspect the filmmakers may be misinterpreting the usual successor knee-jerk reactions
Tumblr media
as racism. If you're using an established brand name for your new hero, you're creating some expectations.
Also, you know the most popular meme about regular Spidey that I see? That Marvel's writers just keep making him suffer and don't want him to actually develop. Which would kinda make Marvel closer to Team Miguel than Team Miles.
Tumblr media
Miles also gripes that Miguel is letting "some algorithm" tell him what to do. While I agree with the sentiment, I'd like to point out that, again, Miles supports BLM.
A movement popularized by an algorithm.
A movement made up of narratives and assumptions.
A movement which has never proven a single incident was because of racism.
During the big chase scene, we see a Spider girl in a wheelchair, aka Sun-Spider. She's from the comics. Same initiative that gave us "Web-Weaver".
Tumblr media
Who is, of course, an extremely effete gay fashion designer Spidey. I kinda like his outfit, though the Spider-eyes with eyelashes is a little too far.
And Sun-Spider seems exactly like a character a stereotypical 90s executive and focus group would come up with. Down to the backward baseball cap.
(Turns out she's Dayn Broder's actual Spider-Sona.)
Also, while I was looking up that one black and white Spider who said "nowhere to run" (Metro-Spider, played by record producer Metro Boomin [/sic]), I found out that Aunt May's full name is "Maybelle", not just "May". TIL.
Tumblr media
There's a bit of a double standard with this version of Spider-Woman, who's black and pregnant. -People in the movie - including Peter B - regularly point out how Peter B endangering his infant daughter Mayday by taking her along with him. But for some reason, nobody says a word about Jessica, who's an active-duty stunt-biking superhero.
Even regular motorbiking can be dangerous for pregnant women.
In fact, the movie portrays this as heroic and impressive. When Gwen sees  Jess is preggos, she asks if Jess can adopt her.
Not to mention the whole "afro and hoop earrings" thing, which seem like a bad idea for a type of hero who often gets into melee combat, even with Spider-Sense.
Yes, I'm aware that female heroes, including the Spider-Ladies, often have exposed hair. It's a genre convention. Incidentally, it was nice to see Batwoman wore a detachable decoy wig in the comics. Some bad guy tries to grab it in a fight? It comes right off.
Also, Jess doesn't have much actual character.
Being pregnant is not a character trait. In fact, her only real traits are basically "cool but stern sassy mentor", to contrast with Peter B. -Incidentally, someone on TVtropes pointed out the double standard. And when I saw the page again, a page-camper had deleted it, with no explanation.
Guess they couldn't stand someone pointing out the flaws of their waifu.
Tumblr media
(One) Spider-UK in this movie is Muslim. I know she's Muslim because she wears a Spider-themed headdress. Note that regular Marvel 616 has a muslim lady Spider-UK, but her name is Zarina Zahari and she doesn't wear a hijabi.
Tumblr media
(Also, she could be mistaken for Ms. Marvel.)
ms marvel.jpg
You might be thinking "wait, isn't a headdress impractical in a melee fight? Doesn't it give your enemy something to grab?" Yes, it is.
But so are Jess's earrings, afro, and being pregnant, so clearly there's a lot of artistic license going on.
Maybe it's partially tearaway, like Batman's cape.
I gotta wonder about the religious rules of wearing a head covering over a mask that *already* covers your entire head. Did she go see her imam and go "Okay, I have a really weird question..."
Come to think, Spidey is usually slim, but a lot of lady Spideys in this movie seemed to have wide hips. Including muscular ladies. Kris Anka's concept art goes really hard on wide hips. I don't know why. Stronger, faster character reads during the big chase?
I guess Spiders could be expected to have strong legs.
BOTTOM LINE:
I liked the movie overall, though the progressive bits made me roll my eyes a little. I...want to see the third one, with reservations.

It was yet another rough day for YN.
The girl returned home from yet another job rejection due to raise of worldwide pandemic.
Living alone at the just age of eighteen wasn't exactly her plan. Not being able to make friends wasnt exactly her plan. Not being alone in the time of isolation wasn't her plan.
YN lived in the Hollywood with her mother who worked in the industry, with her little sister.
Her mum was Graphic designer and worked with major franchise like Marvel and stuff around it. She earned enough to survive in such an expensive city with two girls, and they didn't had to work. They just had enough and they were happy.
YN lived with her family in USA for just about two years. Her mum got transferred to the HQs and they moved to live in State for just three years, all the way from India.
She had everything. A loving mother. An annoying yet very sweet sister. A great home to shelter in. Warm food on her plate each meal. Best education, best healthcare. A life she was so, so, so grateful of and never took for granted. But life did a full one-eighty for her for when they were on their way back home from LAX from their trip to New York. A little vacation her Mummy planned for her Eighteenth birthday week.
They got into a car accident on the highway. Resulting the loss of her only family.
Her sister passing away on the scene due to severe brain bleeding and her mum day after due to heart failure. Leaving her to be the only one surviving, with a broken left arm and a few other mild injuries. Even their cab driver couldn't make it.
She had no one near by. To even help her carry out funeral of her loved ones. She was helped by complete strangers, carrying out rituals according to her culture. It broke her heart even more.
She was indeed her Mummy's girl. She was Eighteen grown up enough to look after herself. She still needed her mother by her side. She was literally her comfort person. Growing up she was her only best friend, just because YN always struggled to make friends or even connections. She was very silent and quiet almost everytime one would see her. She said, she liked to mind her own business, but deep down she really found it excruciatingly difficult to be vulnerable in order to make friends. But it was whole another thing now.
She was traumatised after her boyfriend of two years broke up with her. The guy was significantly older than her. She was just sixteen when the guy was twenty-two when they started dating, colleague of her mum. She met him over dinner at her house when her mum invited few of her colleagues for meal. Her mum was very generous like that, always having people over for meals, keeping good friendships. Heck even her ten year old sister was good at making friends but she wasn't.
She was scared and heartbroken after he broke up with her, because, he was tired of babying her, hearing her talk when she hardly talked. He broke up with her just a week before her Eighteenth birthday. That's when her mother decided to take her out on a little break, they called it a vacation in true Indian fashion, thinking it would get her mind off the guy she fell so hard for.
Her mum warned her about potential heartbreak before hand. It was of course wrong for her to be dating a significantly older guy, and her mum never approved of her relationship. She didn't even know her daughter was dating someone until six months. YN was in huge trouble but she was really into her rebellious teenage phase where she hated her mum so much. For not approving her relationship with an adult man when she was a minor. Her mum tried her best to keep her out of the trouble which would come with that.
But YN was just so blindly in love with his guy. Though her then boyfriend he never took bad advantage of her (she didn't know how lucky she was with that), it was still a horrible break up for her. He never forced her to do anything, as if he truly and deeply cared for her. Maybe he did. But then why did she broke up with her? Oh yeah, he had his reasons.
He told her she was annoying. She was too sensitive. She was too naive. That was the reason she couldn't make any friends. That's the reason people always took advantage of her and he always had to be there for her and baby her constantly when they'd go out. It hit her like a literal double decker bus. She still believes that it was the reason why she didn't had good relationships other than two of her Language Professors, her mum and her sisters.
According to her mum, she should be dating people of her own age. But she just couldn't help it. That was when her daddy issues came in to play. Her dad leaving her and her mum alone with her little sister, not being involved in her life. She had no male figure in her life ever growing up. She never dated anyone before her ex, he was her first kiss, her first everything. She felt like he understood better than anyone ever had.
She couldn't see herself with anyone else other than him. She was not one of psycho lovers. She never forced him. She never called or texted him after that day. He just didn't loved her anymore, and she have to accept it.
It wasn't his fault that she was annoying, right? Yeah!
She found weird yet not so weird sense of comfort and safety around him. His hugs felt different from all the people she have hugged in her almost two decades of existence. Of course there were romantic feelings involved between them both. It was like she was wrapped in a fuzzy and warm safety blanket when around him. His talks were mature, he gave her advice that really worked out for her almost all of the times! She got just so used to it, she felt comfort being clingy with him.
But apparently he found that annoying. Maybe they were mot meant for to be together. That really traumatised her. Even to make platonic relationships.
She have to open up and be vulnerable in order to survive. Here in States. In this world really. She needs to learn how not to let people take advantage of her and her vulnerability.
Justtwo months after her mum and sister passing. She was now struggling financially too.
Though she received some percentage from her mum's salary as she's her family, and will keep doing for next ten years. It wasn't enough, most of it went in paying bills and rent. She had to give her dog up for adoption because she couldn't afford to take care of her anymore. She could hardly feed herself now. The extra amount she received was strictly to be used for her education until she is twenty-three or get her Degree or Diploma.
It was just a horrible situation for her, she didn't know how to get out of.
She had the option of going to her Grandparents back in India but the airlines were shut. Every thing was shut down!
She was ready to do night shifts just so she can at least put something on her plate. But people out there were loosing their jobs, and she was looking for one. With no previous work experience, it was even harder. Even a job of waitress would do for her, no work was too low for her (there was no such thing in her opinion), she just really needed to survive.
Now she mostly pet sat for people. Earning a enough to get groceries for a few days at a time. Luckily she was part of a animal welfare group for her school, she was allowed to pet sit for people. Mostly just cats and dogs. She learned a lot of things there. But they couldn't find people who needed pet sitter that often. Especially now that people were always home. She could work at shelters but even there were no job vacancies for her.
The only two things she was good at was, pet sitting, and studies. And maybe cooking, but it was iffy guess that she was even good at it given the fact she was now solely surviving on instant noodles.
It was yet another day of rejection at a job for her. An early morning rejection. They didn't even take her Interview after they got to know she doesn't have any work experience. The bandage on her arm and a bruse on her face from accident was a big "red flag" for these restaurants and fast food outlets.
They didn't believed her that she got into a car accident. What if she was involved with drugs? A gang? Some Illegal shit? She had a broken arm and a bandage on her temple, she was definitely part of some gang! Or at least she used to be! No restaurant wants someone looking like that.
She went back home crying. Didn't know what to do next. Living some cheap instant noodle brands wasn't healthy.
She got a pet sitting offer for two days and today was day two of that. She'll get her payment today.
But universe was really acting up like her worse enemy. Like she had some kind of rivalry with universe from her past life. She was approached by her- Client? Is that what you'd call someone you pet sit for?- Karen right outside her apartment door. With her tan pomeranian, a white bandage wrapped around his front paw. The lady looked furious. Her pale turned visibly pink in rage, as she stood there with two of the supervisor from the Animal welfare group, Mr. Wilson and Ms. Smith.
She already felt humiliated and embarrassed enough, there was someone moving in next door to her that time.
"She was the pet sitter who was assigned for Olive." Olive- the dog.
"Wha- what happened?" She was already scared of what must have happened. She didn't know what went wrong. How does the dog have a bandage on his paw? He was completely fine before he went back home!
"According to Karen, Olive had a leg injury at the time of his pickup." Mr. Wilson said.
"No- no! He was was completely fine Mr. Wilson." YN defended herself.
"It was her. She couldn't take care of my baby and now she's stuttering. That's a tale-tell sign of lies!" Karen said. No she accused the poor girl when she did her job very right. "Mr. Wilson, I need you to charge her for the vet fees and cancel her permit to pet sit from you welfare group."
"What?" YN almost screamed.
"Karen, we know how to how to do out job." Ms. Smith stepped in, "YN, did you take notes and videos before leaving the dog with his owner?"
"Yeah! I- I have it!" YN nodded. She immediately pulled out her phone and showed the video of perfectly healthy dog just before she sent him home with Ms. Karen.
Apparently, the welfare group was very passionate about working with animals. They offered few policies, lile refund of fees if their pet is injured, let that be intentionally or unintentionally. The vet bills were paid by the pet sitter and welfare group themselves. Plus the person would be fired from their place. YN only stuck with the group because she chose the topic on animal welfare for her essay. She needed practical knowledge from. And now she is stuck because she needs the money it brought her. Even if it was bare minimum.
The group had their fair shares of scams, getting money from their non-profit. They asked their pet sitter to take videos of the pets after getting them and before sending them back home.
The dog was completely healthy!
Turned out, Ms. Karen had some sort of psychotic tendencies to abuse her children in every possible way, and the poor dog was included in that. They found this out when her husband came there to tell them that the report was false.
YN was saved there! She got her pay cheque for the work. It wasn't nice, she was balling her eyes out. There were some new people moving in next door, who literally had to stop their moving because of the commotion right in the hallway!
She was humiliated and embarrassed in front of her new neighbours. And put up false accusations of harming a animal!
She took her payment from Ms. Smith and just went in, shutting her door behind her as fast as she could after the people were gone. The sympathetic look in the new neighbour's eyes felt taunting to her.
But like every other day. She gathered herself up, and got ready for the day. She had a two pm online class. She needs to somehow complete her degree so she can get a nice placement in a good company and afford a healthy lifestyle for herself. Just two more years... She'd get a job at her college placement!
......................................................................
The cycle of her being rejected at job interviews went on. She always came back home crying her eyes out over the rejection.
It just kept getting embarrassing for her. She'd always. And always see her new neighbour either going somewhere or coming back from somewhere. All she did was opened her door as quickly as possible and go inside her house.
No matter eerie it felt. No matter how it felt like the dead silent, cold empty apparently came to bite her. It was more comforting than being embarrassed in front another human being. She hated her own kind now.
Today, again, the universe on her nerves. Due to her blurry vision she couldn't even open the door to her apartment. She struggled. To do a simple task such as opening a door. She wanted to lock herself in her bathroom and scream until she lost her voice.
"Open up! Open. Up!" She hit her non-bandaged hand hard on the wood, wiggling the keys inside.
"Hey, hey, hey!" She heard an unfamiliar voice from behind, "you need any help."
"No, I don't." She mumbled. Now feeling her body deflated at her defeat with the day already. She still lazily tried to put the key in his place, feeling all her energy drained out in a split second. She was putting her life at risk everyday, being exposed to the deadly virus, just to survive. It didn't made sense to her. Why was she even trying at this point really?
She felt a hand over hers, taking her keys from her. They helped her open the door for her.
"You alright?" She heard the question.
No she wasn't alright! She was fucking tired of everything! Everything howled over her like a beast at the same time.
Heart break, loss of her mum, loss of her sister, loneliness, financial issues, rejection, poor performance in academics due to everything. It all came at one time for her!
"Yeah!" But she settled to lie. She'd either deal with it alone and survive it, or not, she wouldn't let anyone take advantage of her vulnerability.
"I need to make sure you're safe, okay. You talk to me if you want." Wow now he had an accent too? Just like her ex? Amazing! Pure bliss it was to remember him!
"Leave me alone, please. It's none of your business." She said trying to open her now unlocked door.
Who was he? A complete stranger! Why was is so into her business? Why are people so nosy these days? How did he assumed she was not safe by her self?
Oh right, the bandage on her arm and temple!
Oh yeah, and add 'looking like a drug dealing gang member' to the list as well!
"Okay, okay." The guy stepped back. YN just shot him one glance before pushing her door open and going inside. She took her keys from him and shut the door closed. She melted into puddle right against her door.
......................................................................
Harry was seriously stuck alone in LA. He can't even work now. Have no where to stay here. He had no other choice than to rent a flat there. He found a decent housing complex for himself. A one bedroom flat. More than space enough for himself.
There were three flats on his floor. His flat was fully furnished so she just had to bring in his luggages and guitars. He had Jeff help him move there.
He just stood there confusedly, trying to figure out what was happening. Why was this young girl crying? What was wrong with this lady?
Eventually Jeff and him were able to figure out what actually happened. It was fucked up. Harry felt so bad for this poor girl. He already saw her crying walking up the stairs before hand.
He just kept seeing her. Their timing of leaving and coming back surprisingly, most of the time, was synchronised. It was a pure coincidence. She was always crying, looking drained out all the time.
Now Harry have met so many humans his entire life time. He was pretty good at reading people by now.
Her injured arm and head made him concern. Yeah, concern for a stranger. Does she have a history of self harm? Was she part of an abusive household? Or did she got into accident? He could think of so many different scenarios. And he didn't wanted to assume anything. He tried helping her today but she snapped at him.
The thrid flat was vacant as per his knowledge or he'd not be that nosy knowing that she lived there before him so she'd know these other neighbours. And he'd do this to any human so he'd try to help his stranger neighbour. If she wants him too. He knew he should have kept his social distancing measure away from her. He'd take it, if it meant to save someone's life.
Okay, now he's probably overthinking everything!
He saw her again the next day though. Coming back home with a bag of groceries. Not looking as drained out like last time.
"Hello, good morning." Harry greeted, keeping his safe distance for her and himself. The girl turned around to look at him. Just her puffy eyes visible with her mask on, that held so much pain.
"Good morning." She nodded her head once.
"I moved here a week ago. Just wanted to introduce myself as we're neighbours now." Harry explained, "I am Harry by the way, nice to meet you."
"Yeah, I know you. Nice to meet you too." She said, her voice shaking with anxiety, "I- I am YN."
Harry was taken back. He was usually accustom to people going crazy when they know him and see him in person. She was surprisingly unphased by it. And she knew him. It kind of crushed his narcissism. But it was fine. She doesn't seem to be having a good time since he saw her. It was understandable.
"Nice. I guess I'll see you around then." He said not thinking anything of it really. She didn't seem to either, she just nodded her head and squeaked a Yeah.
"Have good day." He said locking his door, he was leaving to go for recording.
"You- you too." She said. He waited for her to go in so he can use the staircase to go down and maintain safe distance. Once she closed her door shut, not right at his face, it was polite this time. He went on with his day.
......................................................................
Just a month into lockdown. He just saw his neighbour around in hallway or occasionally in lobby.
He'd share small talks asking how she is doing and wishing the great rest of the day or evening. Harry figured she lived entirely alone, there was no one living with her. So half of his assumptions and concern for a stranger, out of humanity, were out.
This particular day he found the girl by her door, scrubbing off the wood with a blue rubber glove covering her hands, a yellow sponge soaked in some sort of cleaning concoction. She looked like she'd almost throw up. It was nine pm at night when he came back from studio. And this past week he really never saw her leave her house, the time he saw her was with a grocery store bag in her hand four days ago.
"Is everything alright?" He asked as he walked up the stairs.
"Yeah, I guess." She glanced at him just once before resuming to her aggressive scrubbing.
Oh she hated that so much!
She wasn't wearing a mask. For the first time he saw her without a mask. Damn she is gorgeous!
"Why are you scrubbing the door then, if you don't mind me asking?" He was curious okay!
She looked up at him again, and continued her work. She was like that, he assumed, she never talked much or just completely ignored his stupid questions.
"I was dog sitting and this dog peed on my door before she went back home." She explained. That's the most he's heard her speak since the one month of him living in the building and knowing her.
"Oh that sucks!" He cooed. She nodded and resumed her scrubbing off dog pee off her door.
YN on the other hand was not having a good day at all. A dog peed on her door and now she have to clean it. She just have one pack of instant noodles left, and no energy to go to store which was twenty-five minutes walk away. She just ate one or two meals a day really. She was hungry, she needed nice real food. Maybe a nicely cooked rice with some lentil soup, true Indian food like her mum used to make her, or even a salad would work for her. She was sick was the same flavour. It was like she had the option of choosing only food which she can eat for the rest of her life and she chose instant noodles. She loved those. But she wouldn't want to eat it everyday!
Now she can buy rice and pulses, but she needed other things like spices, veggies, and oil to cook one nice meal. And it costed a lot. For her at least. She never imagined living alone came with so much. How did her mum handled all of this?! All her mum ever asked her to look at the monthly expenses and how to do her taxes and stuff. She had little to know idea and these small things do add up. She was good at accounts and managing her expenses but she didn't had the means to carry out her daily expenses, if that makes sense. It somewhat makes sense to her now. She was learning business too, so accounts came naturally to her.
YN felt stupid for not caring about all this whilst she was learning. She was too relied on her mother. She wasn't learning whilst she was learning. Meaning the common stuff, like small things as simple as a pack of chips adding up in a grocery list.
She earned maybe a fifty to sixty dollars a week, even that was really hard for to make because of pandemic. There were hardly any people wanting or needing to have a pet sitter. Half of the amount went in buying stuff like laundry detergent, cleaning supplies like dish soap sponges, and etc. it was so new to her. She never in her life had to take care of that. And maybe this was the last time she'd ever get to pet sit till... She doesn't know how long this is gonna go. It worried her so much!
YN saw her neighbour haven't moved from his place from past five minutes. She was going to snap at him asking what was so entertaining abou lt seeing her clean dog pee off her door. She calmed herself down, because she was in his way.
"Oh, I am sorry." She got up and moved aside. "You should have asked me to move."
"It's alright, you already look pissed didn't wanted to add to it." Harry nodded understandingly. She shot him a half smile.
To be honest, Harry was standing there watching her because... Because what? He found her very beautiful? Yeah, she was scrubbing off dog pee and that was very attractive, isn't it?
Oh stop it! She is really pretty. But what if she is way you ger than him. That would be wrong. Not like he was going to do something which would lead him to go to jail if she was a minor. She can't be a minor, she lived alone. Why is he thinking all of this? He's not going to ask her out on a date! What the fuck is going on?!
"Good night YN." Harry said.
"Good night." The picked up the bucket of water and headed inside her flat.
Harry returned to his own flat. This isolation was killing him. He loved socialising, going out with friends, meeting his family, all he did was go to the studio. That too secretively, had to social distance there. He was constantly in the recording booth working that way. Just had Mitch and Steve there in the other room.
Why he chose to live alone? Well, all his friends had their own families, and he still had to work. He was making a new album because he had nothing to do and now that he his tour was postponed.
He didn't liked being alone.

Ziqitza Healthcare- When Will The Indian Public Transport Open?
In a country like India where the public transportation serves 7 crore people and road trips that records to 1645 crore km total distance annually, it would be safe to say that the livelihoods of many, many people are affected due to the shutting down of the services in the pandemic. Many questions remain to be answered but here are a few answered by this Ziqitza Healthcare ltd blog.
Tumblr media
Why do we even need to open up public transportation?
Unlike companies and schools that can at least moderately operate on an online level, public transportation is a major need for the lower strata of Indian society, involved not only in transportation for their work but also being employed by the public transportation services.
Since a safe vaccine is not within our near reach and with the country being opened up to avoid total economic collapse, there is a desperate need to open up public transport but only with more than adequate safety measures.
What is the plan to open up public transport?
The opening up of public transport as indicated by the central government has been handed over to the state governments. State governments have to decide how the problem of opening up public transport will be tackled.
In states like Uttar Pradesh, more and more public buses are on the road testing out staggered services to devise a plan that will work according to demand and supply as more and more people start going to work. There are guidelines on proper sanitation and ensuring the safety of not only the passengers but of the workers as well, but it ultimately depends on the local government that the people elected to carry out the decision and properly implement it.
In a city like Mumbai where the local trains are the transport service for more than 40% of the entire population (total population- 20 million, local train users- 8 million), a misinformed, hurried decision can lead to a complete disaster in an already ongoing disaster. Although, the Mumbai authorities have indicated that public transport including local trains will start on November 1, 2020. These will be carried on with safety measures decided by the BMC- Bombay Municipal Corporation.
Does opening up public transportation mean opening up the Metro too?
It has been a topic of hot debate in metro cities of opening up metro rails as the Metro just like other public transportation services serves all people indiscriminatingly but on a much larger level.
The Delhi metro alone serves 1.5 million passengers ranging from students to workers to people trying to get around the city. Opening up such a multi-faceted transport service that some might say is an intricate death trap for a pandemic will be a mammoth task.
Suggestions like clearing up stations and having a maximum station capacity are being reviewed. All passengers will be required to indulge in personal protective gear and no exceptions will be entertained.
What precautions will the government take to ensure our safety?
Well, there are a lot of suggestions that have been given to local governments by their people which are being considered for forming new rules for public transportation. However, the general guidelines that the state governments should follow are a proper check of employees, sanitization after every use, and maintain social distancing. Though again, all discrepancies are in the hands of the local government.
For Delhi, the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered only 20 passengers per bus with sanitization after every ride. The transport department will be responsible for maintaining social distancing in public transportation and marshals of the said department will help people maintain social distancing.
The DMRC or the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has issued some strict but robust new rules that can help the general public make use of Delhi’s public transportation amidst humanity’s worst pandemic. Tokens will be stripped away and all passengers will be required to be registered on the AarogyaSetu app. Workers will be tested periodically and will maintain zero contact with passengers as before. Personnel will be deployed to ensure no breakage of rules by the general public. The AC will be modified to keep a constant circulation of fresh air and only alternative seats can be occupied.
In Rajasthan, the local intra-state busses will also be sanitized after every ride and will operate with a 50 percent capacity. This was decided by the transportation minister, Pratap Singh Khachriyawas.
What about other forms of transport like Ola and Uber?
Apps like Ola and Uber that provide contracted cab services are considered public transport as well and hence will have to adhere to the government guidelines.
The driver and passengers have to wear a mask at all times and a separation between the two should be maintained through the use of a plastic curtain. Pool services will not be allowed anymore and in addition to that, no more than 2 passengers can get on the same cab. The driver is expected to sanitize his/her car after every ride and maintain as little contact as possible with the passenger.
Is opening up public transport necessary?
Yes, opening up public transport is the first step to reopen India and its economy. As more and more people in the service sector find themselves out of a job, opening up public transport is the need of the hour. Thousands of auto-rickshaw drivers are rejoicing over the decision to reopen public transport and proclaiming that they are being saved from starvation. More and more offices are now opening and on-site work can’t be delayed much longer. Opening up public transportation will be a brave step that we have to take together as a country. As the pandemic goes on, all we can do is take our best precautions and move on with our life.
 How does Ziqitza help?

And the infuriated Ganguly spoke to the media against Chappel which sidelined him from the International cricket for one year despite regaining his form.
Parted ways with KKR due to split Captaincy: Ganguly led Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, however, the next season of the cash-rich tournament was staged in South Africa. The management went with the strategy of “multiple captains” and appointed Brendon McCullum as the skipper. That decision left the KKR fans fumed and the side also had one of the most disastrous seasons.
Conflict with Shane Warne in IPL: The rivalry between India and Australia was clearly visible during the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in a match between Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals. Supposedly KKR were to bat first but Ganguly didn’t show on on the crease on time. That left Rajasthan’s skipper Shane Warne annoyed which he later expressed in the front of the media.
Shirt Waive-off in Natwest Series: Ganguly hit the headlines yet again during the Natwest finals between England and India in 2002. Apparently, India had to chase down a stiff target of 326 runs to win the trophy. It was one of the most riveting and nail-biting contests that even forced the India skipper to open his shirt and waive off in the air as the Indian middle-order batsmen chased down the stiff target in a dramatic contest. Apparently, Ganguly did that deliberately because Andrew Flintoff’s did almost the same thing during England’s visit to India earlier that year.
Making Steve Waugh wait for the toss: Ganguly was in the headlines for yet again the similar reasons during the 2001 series against Australia. Apparently, the Australian skipper had to wait for the Indian counterpart for the toss which annoyed him and later he questioned Ganguly’s lack of respect for the game. Ganguly denied all the allegations of showing up late on most of the occasion saying he did that once as he couldn’t find his blazer.
Affair with the actress Nagma: Ganguly was under the limelight yet against in 2001 when a rumour of him dating the Bollywood actress Nagma spread on the social media all over. Before setting off for the series against Australia, Ganguly had visited a South Indian temple along with Nagma where it was alleged that he performed rituals that were performed by the married couples. However, his wife Dona rubbished all the rumours and stood by his side.
Refused to carry drinks on his debut: This takes us back to Ganguly as a rookie who had travelled to Australia with the Indian team during the 1991-1992 year. Ganguly was told to carry the drinks for his teammates which he refused to do so, which made him people say he was arrogant as a youngster. Later, after a few years, Ganguly recounted the incident as he bashed the then team manager Mr Ranbir Singh for his management skills.
