Reina, Gaius, Brynhildr, Prabal, and Faendal gathered in a private room, the three leaders wary and curious about why Reina had insisted on speaking to them privately. Prabal held Brynhildr's hand under the table, rubbing circles in her hand as she silently panicked. Faendal looked at his fellow Progenitor, and then at Prabal, worried about the both of them.

Reina and Gaius sat down, and Reina took a deep breath before she spoke. “Gaius and I went hunting on a different island than usual today. Everything went okay, Gaius set up traps the day before without much trouble, so I went out hunting, and I bagged a deer by the creek when Gaius caught up to me. And we talked for a while until I heard something come crashing through the bamboo behind us, and it was really big. I didn't see it, but it had to be big to make that much noise from so far away. And it kept getting closer, and I just grabbed Gaius and the deer and flew faster than I'd ever flown in my life-” here she paused to catch her breath and shove back the panic threatening to spill over, “We had to stop before we got back, I was tired, so I fell asleep. Storm moved in, and we found that Fae while we walked back in the rain.”

Brynhildr tilted her head. “You didn't see it?” she queried.

“No, I didn't stick around for long enough to see it get out of the bamboo.” Reina said.

“It roared after us.” Gaius murmured. Their eyes were locked onto one of the floor tiles. “It roared and it was one of the worst sounds I've ever heard, Brynhildr.”

The three leaders on the other side of the room exchanged worried and frightened looks. Finally, Faendal spoke up. “Don't go back to that island. Not even if you think you're brave enough to see what it is, you'll get hurt and we won't be able to help you.”

“Yeah,” Gaius said, and Reina nodded.

Brynhildr looked as though she didn't want to say what came out of her mouth, but she said, “You two can still hunt, but you hunt on the other side of the territory. Prabal….”

Prabal looked at his daughter and asked, “Will you let me come with you?”

Gaius and Reina glanced at each other with raised eyebrows. Finally Gaius shrugged and Reina looked back to Prabal. “Yeah, you can.”

Brynhildr visibly relaxed.

“You two go rest. Get something to eat, play a game, I don't care, just don't go out again today, kids.” Brynhildr said, sounding so tired and fearful that Gaius and Reina could only agree.

Reina rushed over and hugged her mother, then her father, then Faendal before walking out of the room. Gaius seemed like they didn't know what to do until Brynhildr laid a hand on their shoulder and jerked her chin toward the door with a smile. “Thank you, Gaius. For being there for her.”

Gaius seemed startled at her friendliness, but recovered quickly. “Anytime, Brynhildr. Just glad she's alright,” they said, and turned to leave after waving at Prabal and Faendal.

Prabal broke the silence that followed Gaius’ absence, “What are we going to do?”

Brynhildr thought for a second before responding, “We find out which direction they went in and ward that border of our territory before those islands.”

“Why not just bubble off those islands?” Faendal suggested.

“Even better. Keep anyone from going there. I would much rather know nothing than have whatever is there come here uninvited. When will you do it and who will you need?”

“Probably just us, maybe us and Djanne. Though we could also use Kapteyn for a strong Arcane shield.”

“Get Kapteyn to help. A mono-element ward will be stronger.”

“We could do it in a few days. Once we find out where they went hunting, we just have to figure out which wards to use and prepare.”

“Get to it, Faendal.”

“Got it,” said Faendal, and he set off to find Valencia.

Prabal waited until he was gone before turning to Brynhildr and saying, “I need to talk to Reina tonight. And I need you to get us a Light mage. Someone powerful who can banish Shade and seal other...things.”

“We have Decimus, dear.”

Prabal met her eyes, and Brynhildr saw a deep and ancient fear surfacing in her husband's deep green eyes. Her eyes widened in realization as Prabal said, “We need someone who isn't an Imperial.”

Brynhildr now felt his fear deep in her own heart. “You don't think-”

“I don't know, dear. But we should be more safe than sorry. I just. I just have a terrible feeling.”

Brynhildr leaned heavily into him and he leaned hard on her. He heard her say, so softly, so quietly: “I hope you're wrong, Prabal. I love you, but I pray you're wrong.”

Prabal held her tight and looked without seeing across the room. “Me too, Bryn. Me too.”

Buck slowly strolled over to the bar. Every molecule of my body betrayed me, vibrating with anticipation, syncing to raise my temperature and heart rate. He looked so fine I wanted to taste him. His mossy green henley sweater was open at the neck, showing a triangle of the bark-colored t-shirt beneath. He had missed a spot shaving. Even now I wanted him, wanted to trace that spot with my fingertips, nuzzle it with my lips and teeth.

I felt like a spinster schoolmarm, still in my car-creased navy pencil skirt with my wilted floral-print bow blouse tied primly at the neck. I had left work at the last possible moment and driven hell-for-leather to make it here by five. I hadn’t changed my clothes, or even re-applied my lipstick. I knew he would notice, see all of the interior chaos writ large on my disheveled exterior. I dreaded his pity.

“Hey, Darlin’.” He sat on the stool beside me.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, wondering when it would stop. The goosebumps. The fluttering. The wishing he would wrap me close and make me safe. The ache for him to care for me.

Never. It was never going to stop, it would always feel this way. I had lost control and there was no getting it back. That it was too late was just…it just was.

I pushed my drink across the bar and caught Corey’s eye. “Throw a shot of gin in this for me?”

He grinned and took my glass to the far end of the bar, dumping it down the sink and preparing a fresh cocktail.

“You look gorgeous,” Buck said, too low for the bartender to hear. “You could make a paper bag look like Prabal Gurung.”

“It’s all about the attitude,” I bantered back with an exaggerated shrug.

Corey set a fresh glass before me. “A proper greyhound.” He turned to Buck with a wary gaze. “Molson?”

Buck laughed and shook his head. “I’m in a good mood tonight, Kid. Surprise me.” The bartender’s eyes gleamed and he turned away to get Buck’s drink. I gave Buck’s neck a sidelong glance. That patch of stubble? He wasn’t in a good mood. I played along anyway.

“Now you’ve done it,” I warned him. “Your drink is coming back with a pink umbrella. I guarantee it.”

Just then Aerin entered the dining room, platinum perfection in a floral dress. The way Chet looked at her brought a tear to my eye, the intensity of his emotion etched plainly across his face. I glanced at Buck. He was looking at me the same way. I never wanted to look at anyone else again, if only he would never stop looking at me that way.

“No, Buck,” I forced myself to say the words, “you don’t get to look at me like that.” Never stop. I couldn’t help the thought. It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t reasonable, but right now I couldn’t bear it if he stopped.

He dropped his eyes and sipped his drink, a fluorescent pink thing in a curvy hurricane glass garnished with a yellow paper umbrella.

“It tastes like goddamn strawberry bubblegum,” he growled, pushing it away. Corey was in the dining room, so Buck strode behind the bar and found himself a bottle of Molson.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, pausing behind my barstool. He gave my shoulder a soft squeeze and kept walking, taking a seat at the long dinner table. Aerin tried to corral her guests, encouraging everyone to come to the table. I couldn’t move. The phantom weight of Buck’s hand on my shoulder pinned me to my stool.

She flaps her wings wildly, clawing furiously at the abomination looming above her. Lenore wakes up screaming.

She’s reopened the wounds on her neck from throwing herself around during her nightmare, and she slams her back into the nearest corner as she looks around frantically for the Emperor. But it isn’t there. Just a dream, she reminds herself, just a dream.

No, he spared you in the real thing.

While Lenore desperately tries to catch her breath, her retainer, Dottie, leaves the conversation she was in and sprints to Lenore’s room. Prabal, with whom Dottie was speaking, almost follows her, but remembers the terrible fear she harbors of her own kind at the last second. He reluctantly walks away, useless guilt forming for a problem he could never solve.

Or...could he? Not directly, of course. Lenore would sooner kill him than let him approach her. Brynhildr, caring and kind though she was, did not understand the mental trauma Lenore had endured, and had told every other concerned party that she did not want to interfere herself. She was afraid she’d make her worse.

Prabal sighed and lowered his head. He was probably powerless. He would still desperately petition Dottie for a chance to help, but what good would come of trying to help someone who is too afraid of you to accept it?

Cardi B is wearing her engagement ring again after brief split from Offset – AOL

Flashing that bling once again! Cardi Bis back to sporting her engagement ring following a brief split from her husband, Offset — and just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The “I Like It” rapper, 26, added a series of videos to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, February 14, including one that showed off her new bright red hair and cleavage in a plunging dress. As she was filming one clip in the mirror, her gigantic 8-carat diamond ring was noticeably front and center.

The night before, Cardi and the Migos member, 27, attended the Ignite Angels and Devils Pre-Valentine’s Day Party in Bel Air, California. The “Bodak Yellow” songstress could be seen flaunting her jeweled hand as she strategically placed it on the chest of her beau while the two posed for pictures.

Cardi ditched the diamond in December 2018 before she announced that the pair had split. The Bronx-born artist was spotted without the ring while filming a music video hours before taking to Instagram to reveal they had “grew out of love.”

The couple — who secretly tied the knot with in September 2017 and share 7-month-old daughter Kulture — have since seemingly reconciled. Cardi admitted in January 2019 that she and Offset are “working things out.”

Cardi and Offset packed on heavy PDA while walking the red carpet at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10. At one point, the “Money” rapper even grabbed her beau’s face and licked his tongue.

Later that night, Offset joined his wife on stage as Cardi made history becoming the first solo female artist to ever win Best Rap Album. During her acceptance speech, she looked adoringly at him and said, “Husband, thank you. Nah, seriously he was like, ‘You want to do this album, girl, you going to have this baby and we going to make this album.’”

The weekend before the Grammys, the two stepped out to attend a pre-Super Bowl club event in Atlanta, Georgia. “We always going to be a family that’s together,” Cardi told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “My baby love us both.”
