Guide to Mercedes Lineup
General
Numbers – The numbers at the end of the model name basically means engine power. It goes from 180 (slowest) to 65 (fastest). Used to mean displacement, e.g. C63 = 6.3L V8 engine. Two numbers (without 0 at the end) is the performance powered tuned AMG version, three numbers are "regular" models that have a softer ride and more comfort, but less speed. Fun fact: There was once a special SL73 which had a 7L engine!
Letter – There's not much logic to it anymore. But some letters have a general meaning: C = Compact, G = SUV, S "special" luxury model
Suffix letters* – **d at the end means diesel. Gas has no suffix. e means electric hybrid.
The Models
A – Economy hatchback. Cheapest Mercedes offering. Available from the A180 CDI all the way to the A45 AMG.
CLA – Economy coupe/sedan. Based on the A-Class platform. Also available in
“shooting brake” (station wagon) format. Many consider it being cramped and having low interior quality compared to the C-Class. Also available as CLA45 AMG.
B – Economy MPV. Comparable to BMW 2-series Active Tourer. Not available as AMG model, unfortunately.
GLA – Economy SUV. Basically a raised A-Class with plastic around the wheels. Also available as GLA45 AMG.
C – Base level sedan. Bigger than the CLA-Class, and more luxurious interior. Available in “estate” (station wagon), coupe, cabriolet formats. Available in C43 AMG (C400 before), C53 (plug-in hybrid, coming soon), 4.0L C63 and C63 S (turbocharged) AMG versions down to the C180 1.6L. Pendant to Audi A4, BMW 3-series.
E – Premium sedan. A little bigger than the C-Class. Available in estate, coupe and cabriolet formats as well. Competition to BMW 5 series, Audi A6, Jaguar XF.
CLS – A much larger premium pendant to the CLA “shooting brake”. Basically a coupe/station wagon hybrid of the E-Class.
S – Ultra premium sedan, also available as coupe (not station wagon!), comparable to BMW 7 Series, Audi A8. Available in AMG versions (S63, S63 S). The base engine is much larger than other models, e.g. there’s no S200. Only S420 and up. Available in elongated limousine versions. Available as V12 (S65). S-Class always has the latest tech, which then gets featured in the E-Class. Mercedes also makes even more luxurious versions of the S-Class under the Maybach brand.
SL – Grand touring cars in coupé or roadster format. SL supposedly means Sportlich/Leicht in German. Available as a V12 AMG SL65 version. A long-running range which runs from the 1960s models like the 300SL which had the famous gullwing doors.
SLK/SLC – Compact roadster/cabriolet, much smaller and more affordable than the SL. The current version is not available as a full-blown AMG, with the SLC43 AMG being the fastest.
SLR – Discontinued. Very fast grand touring sportswear, jointly developed by McLaren and Mercedes-Benz.
SLS – Discontinued. The successor to the SLR, notably having the famous gullwing doors, and first car built from scratch by AMG.
AMG GT – Also built from scratch by AMG, it’s Mercedes-Benz’ current roadster/coupe offering available in 3 versions: Base, S and R, with the AMG GT-R being the fastest.
CL – Discontinued. The old name for the S-Class coupe.
GLC – The SUV version of the C-Class. Also available in a “coupe” look.
GLE – The SUV version of the E-Class. Also available in a “coupe” look.
CLS – The SUV version of the S-Class, but not really, since it’s actually a little cheaper. It is the largest SUV from Mercedes.
M – The old name for the current GLE-Class.
GL – The old name for the GLS-Class.
GLK – The old name for the GLC–Clas.
G – The famous Geländewagen. A SUV with the old-school look (and off-road abilities to back it up) that dates back to the 1970s. One of the 3 Mercedes models available as V12 (G65). Available in very special, limited versions like the bat-shit insane 6x6 and Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet versions.
R – Discontinued MPV. Quite a bit larger than the current MPV B-class, and was available in a very rare R63 AMG version.
X – Pickup truck, due to be released in 2018.
V-Class/Vito/Viano – light commercial van. In some countries, the Viano Marco Polo is available which is a V-Class fitted with camping gear, including a pop-up roof and a kitchen.
