Ang pinaka-karaniwang sintomas ng ulcerative colitis ay ang problema sa tiyan at dugo o pagkakaroon ng nana sa dumi. Gayundin, kabilang sa mga sintomas ang:

Ang ulcerative colitis ay wala pang lunas, ngunit may mga gamot na maaaring makatulong sa pagbabawas ng mga sintomas, depende sa kalubhaan nito:

Aminosalicylates – Maaaring tumulong sa pagkontrol at pahupain ang mga sintomas.

Corticosteroids – Gamot upang mabawasan ang pamamaga.

Immunomodulators

Infliximab (remicade) – Inirereseta kapag hindi tumugon sa iba pang mga gamot.

Ang doktor ay maaari ring magreseta ng iba pang gamot upang bawasan ang emotional stress o upang pahupain ang sakit, bawasan ang pagtatae, o itigil ang impeksiyon. Maaari din magpasok sa ugat ng nutrisyon sa tulong ng intravenous line (IV).

Mga layunin ng paggamot:

Kontrolin ang matindi o biglaang pag-atake ng karamdamang ito.

Pigilan ang paulit-ulit na atake.

Tulungan na pagalingin ang colon.

Ang pagtitistis ay minsan inirerekomenda kapag nabigo ang paggamot, kung mayroong mga side effects ang mga gamot, o di kaya ay naging banta na sa kalusugan ng isang pasyente ang ulcerative colitis. Gayundin ang inirirekomenda kapag nagkaroon ng pagbabago sa aporo ng colon na maaring maituring na precancerous. Maari ding maoperahan kapag may malubhang komplikasyon tulad ng pagkasira ng colon, matinding pagdurugo, o pagkakaroon ng toxic megacolon (komplikasyon ng iba pang mga kondisyon ng bituka).

Ang buong proseso ay maaaring isakatuparan sa iisang operasyon lamang ngunit madalas na nahahati ito sa dalawa o tatlong serye ng pagtitistis.

Proctocolectomy – Pag-aalis ng tumbong at kabuuan o bahagi lamang ng colon.

Ileoanal anastomosis o pouch surgery – Pagtatanggal ng lahat ng malaking bituka at sirang aporo ng tumbong.

Komplikasyon

Rayuma o pamamaga ng mga kasukasuan.

Sakit sa atay.
