Chapter 16
-
Hyuk smiled warmly at Daeul before patting his head and taking a seat next to him at the dining table. “Sleep well, Daeul?”
“The host came by early and dropped this off.”, he said as he gently placed a bag of peaches on the table, flashing Hanji a smile.
She grabbed the bag and took the contents out to wash them, trying to distract herself from Hyuk’s warm gazes.
“Alright, I have some work to finish up today so...You two okay with being alone?”, Hyuk asked with a brow raised.
Hanji looked toward Daeul and didn’t miss the look of disappointment on his face upon hearing what his dad had said. To reassure him she spoke, “We’ll be fine -- I think he said he wanted to go for a swim so I-I’ll take him.”
She pointed lightly to the backyard of their temporary home, directing to the small pool outside.
Hyuk nodded softly before patting Daeul’s head once more and pecking his cheek lightly.
“Alright, I’ll see you later then.”, he said with a small smile toward Hanji before leaving, making her hold her chest when he wasn’t looking.
~
Their three days had been spent either walking by the beach, eating or just lazing around the house waiting for Hyuk to return so they could actually do something productive.
The doorbell rang when Daeul and Hanji sat by the pool, making them turn to each other in confusion.
Hanji wrapped the boy around with a towel before grabbing her black silk robe designed with roses, to cover herself up. Afterall, she wouldn’t appreciate a stranger eyeing her down even in a white one-piece.
When she opened the door, there was no one there rather a small envelope on the doormat.
She allowed Daeul to wait behind her as she picked it up and pulled out the contents of it, which was a small note with writing all too familiar to her.
Meet me at The Leo by seven o’clock.
Jerico will come by to pick up Daeul at six.
Hyuk.
Who the hell is Jerico?, she furrowed her brows and turned to Daeul who jutted his bottom lip as he waited to get changed out of his wet clothes.
~
Well apparently Jerico was an employee from the nearby villas who ran the daycare for families. He certainly came by at six o’clock sharp to pick Daeul up who cried loudly upon being sent away.
Not being able to bear seeing him so upset, Hanji herself volunteered to come along with them to drop him off and she would find her own way to the restaurant which Hyuk had informed her about.
She felt a slight tinge inside her with the remembrance of the incident they had been through months before -- their hands tied together with tape and rope and guns pointed at their heads.
But then Jerico let her know that they had the boy’s father’s full consent and that he would be safe under any circumstances, and she certainly trusted Hyuk at this point.
They were generous enough to bring her to The Leo, dropping her off at the front.
She walked through the open doors in her long white dress, another white cardigan placed on her shoulders as she wore her hair down. She made sure to wear a long-lasting perfume and lotioned her arms thoroughly.
“Miss Oh.”, she heard a voice say.
“This way please.”, the voice belonged to an usher of sorts who led her past the chattering customers and toward the back of the restaurant.
When he opened the door, she hesitantly took a step in and instantly her eyes laid upon Kwon Hyuk himself who sat at a small table for two, swirling the ice in his water.
He lifted his head and met her eyes, smiling instantly upon seeing her. Standing up quickly, he pulled a chair out for her which she was shy to take at first but eventually did thanks to the warm smile on his face.
“You made it.”, he said once he sat down in his own seat, making her smile tightly as a shy blush crept upon her cheeks.
Leaning his elbows on the table, Hyuk lowered his head. “I uh...I’m sorry I’ve been so busy with work -- I-I didn’t bring the two of you here all to leave you alone.”
“No, no! I-I get it, and it’s not like you’re not trying at all. And D-Daeul knows how to have fun, anyway.”, she giggled.
Just then the same usher, now a waiter it seemed, delivered them a bottle of red wine and poured a small amount into their glasses. Two other waiters brought what Hanji guessed their appetizers were -- Polynesian chicken wings, which made her smile at Hyuk’s simplicity.
“I hope he hasn’t been giving you too much of a hard time.”
“N-No, not at all!”, Hanji said as they shyly picked up a piece of their meal. “Y-You know, he looks so much like you. I-It’s almost as if you gave birth to him yourself.”
She laughed in between her words, making Hyuk laugh loudly himself. He threw his head back making noises which made Hanji widen her eyes.
Is he choking? Oh my gosh, he’s choking!
“I...Haven’t...Heard that one before.”, he said laughing throughout his sentence. Okay, you’re okay.
“Yea he uh, well I’ve been told he looks and acts a lot like me but in a way...he’s like his mom too.”
This made Hanji freeze in her spot, awkwardly holding a small chicken wing between her fingers. “H-His mom.”
He seemed comfortable talking about her -- continuing to break apart a chicken wing as he spoke. “Yea, but we haven’t spoken since he was born.”
“C-Can you tell me about her?”
~
He comfortably explained to her that Daeul’s birth mom had held a relationship with Hyuk since his early twenties, and that when he was twenty-seven she had gotten pregnant with his son.
“At that time she was applying for a job in Australia and I wanted her to stay here for the sake of the baby and of course...I-I thought we would become a family.”
Two months after Daeul was born and after having lived with Hyuk and his family in the grand home of his parents, she had gotten the job in Sydney. However, she promised that she would return one day for Hyuk and their child and they would continue their life together.
“That was almost three years ago.”
Hanji looked longingly at him, her eyes beginning to show pity which was possibly the last thing he needed.
Sighing heavily, he said, “She’s married now, though.”
Hanji closed her eyes momentarily in both shock and disappointment, not knowing exactly how to comfort him.
“I...I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I got to keep Daeul.”, Hyuk smiled warmly.
“D-Do you still think about her?”, Hanji asked hesitantly, fiddling with her thumbs under the table.
Jutting his bottom lip, Hyuk nodded softly making the woman in front of him lower her head with a certain clench in her heart. You’ve no right to feel jealous, Oh Hanji.
“Every now and then. But don’t worry...There’s been someone else on my mind as of late.”
Hyuk tilted his head and waited for Hanji to raise her head and once she did, he locked eyes with her. A small smirk on his face let her know that whatever she was thinking in that moment, she was correct. That maybe, just maybe she was that person occupying his thoughts lately.
Just then they heard the soft sound of cellos and what Hanji could only make out, a violin. She smiled tightly, looking over to the balcony right on her left side and saw a small quartet on the floor below them.
Then she caught a glimpse of the setting sun right before her, the orange and yellows merging together with the turquoise water, making her wonder where the sea ended and the sky began.
“Do you want to dance?”
Ripping her eyes away from the view, she saw Hyuk’s hand to her right and they travelled to meet his gaze, now standing right next to her.
I’ve never danced.
He gently grabbed a hold of her hand which made her stand up on instinct before he wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her close. She felt awkward. His face which she had admired from afar now just mere centimeters away from hers and his eyes piercing into hers.
She gently wrapped her arms around his shoulders lowering her head to avoid his gaze.
“I haven’t done this in a while.”, he softly said to her.
I haven’t done this ever.
“Are you feeling alright?”, he asked with slight worry in his voice.
Hanji still kept her gaze away from his. “I-Is this alright? I uh, I don’t know how people will react to a caretaker dancing with her employ--”
“Are you afraid of what people will say?”, he questioned and she knew the way his brows looked without even glancing at him.
She nodded slowly, feeling slightly embarrassed of her pride. “Are you afraid because you don’t feel the same way?”
If it wasn’t the tension that made her finally look at him, it was definitely his question. They stopped swaying as she stared into his eyes longingly, her mouth slightly agape.
“W-What do--”
“I know you still think about what I’ve said -- about know-knowing your place…”
“...But now...I-I want you out of that place.”
He tightened his grip around her, pulling her even closer to his chest. “C-Can we try something?”. Hanji quickly glanced at his lips before nodding softly.
“I-In this moment, right now. L-Look at me as me. Not as your employer, Oh Hanji…”
And with that, he closed the mere distance between them by softly attaching their lips to each other. To say Hanji melted would be an understatement -- she could feel her body pushing itself into Hyuk’s as her eyes finally closed to enjoy their moment.
The instrumental of John Legend’s Ordinary People complimented their shared kiss -- soft moans exchanged every now and then as they entangled their lips with open-mouthed kisses.
Somewhere in the middle, Hyuk slightly raised Hanji from the ground by her waist, her chest still pressed against him, twirling her around making them break apart from their kiss as she giggled quietly into his ear.
When he placed her down, he kissed her once more before pulling her into a tight hug with his nose nuzzled into the smooth skin of her neck.

Chapter 17
-
She herself didn’t know what to identify as when it came to Hyuk.
Their vacation in Tahiti had ended a month prior with the New Year following, having spent time with each other, friends of course Minji. Daeul was to turn three years-old in two and a half weeks which meant that his grandparents were thinking of him once more.
Standing at the doorfront with his son in his arms and Hanji by his side, he smiled at the woman next to him before turning his gaze to his parents once more.
“This is Oh Hanji…”.
She clenched tightly onto the sleeve of his arm as she smiled tightly at the elder couple in front of her.
They smiled vaguely to her -- a kind of warm yet soft smile that let you know that because they had already accepted her. Whether it was because they were aging by the day or because they knew that their son and grandchild needed someone else in their lives, regardless of whether she was grateful.
Hyuk seemed to have noticed as well since he quickly glanced down to her and smiled before placing a hand on top of hers.
They were certainly more domestic than their son -- insisting on making dinner themselves and ensuring that everyone had food on their plate at all times. Daeul sat between them -- Hanji to his right as always and his dad on his left.
“So Hanji…”, Hyuk’s older mother began, making the said female tense up a little.
“May I ask what you’ve studied?”
Hanji cleared her throat and wiped her hands with the napkin on her right before speaking softly.
“Well, I-I actually took history -- c-classical civilizations and monarchies.”
“Oh, that’s great! History was my favourite in junior high.”, Hyuk’s father piped in with a wide smile on his face, making Hanji feel a little more relaxed.
“Really! I uh, I actually taught ancient history for a year after I graduated.”
“A-Any plans for later on?”
She averted her eyes from the pair and focused on the silverware in front of her, thinking about her recent application to the museum in Manchester which Minji had told her about. She certainly did send them her best essays written in university and her teaching experience.
The one thing she hadn’t told Hyuk was that she had been accepted to begin work in England effective in three weeks.
“W-Well I...I’ve actually been granted a curating position in...in England.”
Hearing the scraping of Hyuk’s butter knife on his plate mid-way slicing up a piece of broccoli for Daeul, she immediately knew he came to a halt.
Hanji turned her head slightly to find his eyes on her before he quickly ripped them away and continued to feed his son.
“England! S-So then just mainly English history or..?”
“Well perhaps for the most part b-but of course I-I’ll get the chance to feature other areas…”
“You know, I had a friend in my second year…”
The voices around her had drifted off as she averted her attention to Hyuk who continued to eat in silence, occasionally turning to Daeul and feeding him some of his own food.
He finally managed to meet her gaze, fixating his eyes on her as they held a kind of sorrow that would linger in her mind for days to come.
~
“...That was mom -- she said she can’t wait to see you again for Daeul’s birthday.”
Hyuk sat in his bed, which he now shared with Hanji since they had decided that she was no longer considered as an employee under his roof, placing his phone down on the nightstand.
“Aw, that makes me feel so giddy.”, Hanji gleed as she gently sat next to him.
And as it became a habit, they shared a long stare of admiration in silence -- sharing the peace and quiet of the now sleeping house.
“A-Are you going to Manchester?”
Sighing heavily and avoiding his gaze, she instead grabbed hold of his fingers and resided in front of her on the soft gray sheets.
“It’s um...It’s actually been something that I’ve been planning e-even before we met.”, she whispered.
Now sitting up straight to properly face her, Hyuk crossed his legs as he leaned in closer. “H-How long will you be gone?”
“A while.”, was all she could say with a jutted lip which turned into a sorrowful smile.
He was silent momentarily, still playing with her fingers noticing her mauve-painted nails. She could sense that there was a slight worry in him -- perhaps even fear. There was something in him which whispered that like Daeul’s birthmom, Oh Hanji could leave him too.
That she could leave and promise to come back but would actually never.
“I-I’m leaving the week after Daeul’s birthday.”, she whispered before bringing both her hands to cup his cheeks and raising his head to face hers.
“Say something, Hyuk.”
It took him seconds to finally face her, bringing his head up mere centimeters in front of her. She didn’t miss the quick glances back and forth her eyes and lips, letting her know what he may have wanted.
“Y-You’ll come back, won’t you?”, he asked with his brows curled.
Do you even have to ask?
“Well, I have one very good reason to.”, Hanji spoke softly before pulling him close into a firm kiss, running her hands down his neck and over his plum blossom tattoo which was dedicated to his mother.
Hyuk rested his hands on her waist before slowly laying her down and hovering overtop of her, deepening their kiss as the dim yellow light in their room surrounded them warmly.
~
She knew she would miss a whole year and perhaps even more of Daeul’s life, so she hugged him tightly like she always did whenever she held him in her arms.
His small body would be bigger a year from now so she savoured every last second as she inhaled the familiar scent of baby powder and vanilla.
“Don’t grow up -- stay small forever.”, she joked as she swayed with him side by side as they continued to hug.
The boy could only manage to embrace her without a single thought or idea of what was going on and gave her a short peck when they pulled apart.
Thankfully the airport wasn’t too crowded -- Minji had come along to of course bid her sister farewell and to help unload the baggage. She was saved as second on the ‘to-hug’ list which Hanji kept quick as to keep herself from bursting into tears.
“To all those math kids who made fun of us social science students.”, Minji encouraged, making her younger sister laugh in glee.
And then there was Kwon Hyuk, whom she had hugged plenty the night prior and refrained from doing so again so as to not make her departure even more miserable.
“I hate goodbyes.”, he said as he held her hand, swinging it with his.
“It’s not -- it’s not goodbye.”, she reassured.
“Oh! H-Here’s my address in Manchester.”, Hanji pulled out a small piece of paper from the pocket of her jacket. “So if we can’t call every day for some reason, you can at least write to me or you know...send me something.”
She joked lightly with a smile, making him chuckle.
He stared longingly at her one last time before gently grabbing her by the back of her head and pulling her into a kiss, making her eyes water as she had promised herself she wouldn’t hug him right before she leaves.
“If you ever feel lonely -- look for the moon.”, he whispered into her ear.
“And especially when it’s full, you’ll know I’m with you.”
Her flight had landed her around seven o’clock in the evening. She stepped out into the crisp February air, her luggage resting on each of her sides as she waved a hand in the air for a cab to drive her to her accommodation.
As one pulled over and she began to place her bags in the truck, she caught a glimpse of the night sky -- the stars dancing in pitch black with a large moon hovering them all.
Just then she heard the ringtone of her phone go off and when she checked that it was from Hyuk, she furrowed her eyes as to how he was able to text her so quickly considering it was long-distance.
However, when she read that the only thing he had sent her was a simple icon of a crescent moon, all the fears and worries she had been holding slowly faded.

Chapter 13
-
Oh Hanji sat tied to the old creaky bed with ropes around her wrists connected to the posts. Two of the still unknown men stood in front of her, arms crossed and eyes piercing through her head.
“He...He’s only my employer. I don’t even know who Daeul’s birth mom is!”, she reasoned as she desperately tugged on the ropes.
“If you don’t stop talking when we don’t ask you to, you won’t have a tongue to talk with!”, one of them threatened leaning extremely close to her face, Hanji practically breathing in his nasty breath which smelled of beef patties and beer.
She curled her face at this but tightened her lips as to physically gesture her sealing them.
Furrowing her brows, Hanji hesitated to speak, “H-He’s not the one who pays me…”
That was true -- Missus Chae pays her every other week. Her cheques don’t arrive through an e-transfer but in actual cheques in white envelopes, with “Oh Hanji” written in cursive which she always guessed was Hyuk’s handwriting.
The actual cheques were signed by him, always in black ink with an exaggerated “K” for Kwon, and a small “H” for Hyuk.
“I-I only make forty thousand won per hour, c-considering they provide me with f-food and shel--”
“Only?! Aren’t you ungrateful? Kwon Hyuk really is filthy rich to be paying a lousy nanny that much.”, the smaller man retorted scoffing at Hanji’s statement about her income.
“I know he’s a workaholic -- does money ever get sent to the house?”, they questioned as they began to lean closer to her once again.
“I-I have no access to that, no one does!”, she defended herself causing them to shake their heads in frustration.
Just then, the only woman entered the room with her hands swinging at her sides as if expecting something. “You got anything useful yet?”
When they shook their heads, she rolled her eyes and sighed loudly. “Listen up, skank. You wanna see the kid or not?”
Hanji’s eyes widened as she straightened her posture in anticipation. “Y-Yes! Let me be with him, he-he’s only two!”
Her pleads caused them all to laugh, as if three bullies were picking on the same victim. She always thought the whole two-against-one thing was a big enough issue let alone three-against-one.
“We’ll let you see him, alright. Just answer our questions--”
“I have been! I don’t know anything about how much Hyuk makes, I only work for his son! Now, instead of using this whole kidnapping act as a way of getting money why don’t you all find jobs suitable enough for forty year-olds and get on with your lives?”
Her retort earned her a hard slap across the face. Standing right in front of her was the larger male, his face now red and fuming with anger.
“Shut your tramp mouth. Now, let’s see how much you and the kid are worth to Kwon Hyuk.”
~
“Can you locate where it is?”, Hyuk asked eagerly as he leaned toward the laptop on his dining table. Around him stood Hanji’s sister, Jiho and the pair of officers.
“It’s literally in the middle of nowhere -- the nearest building is that old bed and breakfast but it closed down in 2013 and parts of it are demolished.”, one of the officers said.
Jiho sighed and backed away from the device as he furrowed his brows. Something about the deserted field was familiar to him and he felt as if he had seen it all before. Then he remembered a music video he had watched a couple years prior which took place in an abandoned run-down building much like the one the cop had said.
“H-Hyuk! Hyuk! I-I’ve been there, a friend and I visited -- it’s one of the sets used by an idol group, I-I keep forgetting which...Monster Z? W-What was it?”, he frantically tapped Hyuk’s shoulder.
“You remember how to get there?”
“Y-Yea, it’s just another twenty minutes passed your studio.”. They hurried into Hyuk’s car with a team of police officers trailing behind them as Hyuk, himself stepped on the gas toward the abandoned building.
His heart pounded in nervousness and what one might call fear as Jiho carefully checked their surroundings.
~
She heaved deeply, her chest rising and falling with each breath she took. Her temple now dripping with blood as she felt her left eye beginning to throb from the hard punch she had just received.
“You don’t want the kid hurt, do you? Well, neither does your arrogant employer.”
Grimacing, she mentally cursed at the people in front of her as she mustered a small voice. “W-Where...Where is he? What did you do to him?”
And as if on command, one of the remaining abductors entered the room with small Daeul in his arms -- wailing and trying to flail his arms but failed to do so thanks to the rope tape which gripped them behind his back.
He aggressively dropped him next to Hanji on the ground with a loud smack and a quiet crack, making her desperately try and crawl over to him despite her hands tied up. She wanted to scream. She wanted to yell the boy’s name and curse the people who had done this to them.
Instead she could only cry. She silenced her sobs as she dragged herself toward Daeul who continued to cry from the pain after having been thrown onto the ground and what may have been the result of a broken arm. Or a broken leg.
“D-Da…”
“Hanji!”, the boy cried loudly, still stuck on the ground.
The previous man stood next to the others who began to pull out handkerchiefs from their back pockets and wrapped them around their faces, only revealing their eyes. He also reached into his own pocket and took out Hanji’s phone, a device which came handy for Hyuk and the others.
“Password.”, he demanded.
When Hanji remained silent, he reached down to her level and grabbed her arm to place her thumb over the home button, successfully logging onto the phone.
He immediately accessed her contacts and tapped on Hyuk’s number, placing it on speaker.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Hyuk felt a buzz from his back pocket. “J-Jiho, my phone.”
Awkwardly reaching into the seat and his friend’s pants, Jiho took the phone and his eyes widened. “I-It’s Oh Hanji.”
“Answer it, idiot!”, Hyuk boomed, making the other male quickly tap the “accept call” icon.
“Hanji!”, both Hyuk and Minji immediately called.
“Kwon Hyuk.”, an unfamiliar male voice replied, sending shivers down his spine.
Upon hearing both his voice and his name, Hanji and Daeul simultaneously called for him.
“Hyuk!”
“Abba!”
Once he had heard their voices, he slammed the brakes hard. He gripped the steering wheel hard and stared at his own phone, trying to keep his composure.
“L-Look, whoever you are, don’t hurt them...W-We already know where you’re located--”
“Good! Everyone’s already here, we’re just waiting for you to show up. But hurry, they won’t last.” The man on the other line quickly hung up, sending confusion and frustration running down throughout Hyuk’s body.
“Shit. Shit!”, he cursed as he drove as fast as he could, sending both Jiho and Minji slamming into the backs of their seats.
They arrived quickly, with Hyuk passing every red light with permission from the police car behind him. With no second thought, they all ran outside of the car and into the building which resided next to the vehicle they had located Hanji’s phone in.
The police entered first, armed with vests and guns as they searched the building. First level: empty.
“Stay behind us, sir.”, one of them commanded as they approached one of the first doors of the second floor. Knocking it down with his foot, the team barged inside to find the scene -- both Hanji and Daeul held back by two of the abductors and tape now over their mouths.
The others stood with weapons of their own, pointed back at the officers.
“Get down on your knees now!”, an officer shouted.
“You’re not the only ones armed, y’know.”, the only woman retorted with the handkerchief still on her face.
The head police was quick to act and shot her right in the foot, sending her to fall down and cry in agony. Her partner noticed a familiar man standing outside the room whose eyes pleaded with him.
“Kwon Hyuk…”
Hanji whimpered silently, eyes locking with the said male. His heart pounded against his chest upon seeing her and his son in this condition.
“Name your price. I-I’ll give you anything you want, just...Just hand them over to me.”, he pleaded with them.
They exchanged looks with Hyuk and one another, Hanji still holding onto Daeul tightly with the nasty stench of the abductors surrounding them.
The previous man looked at Kwon Hyuk intently, as if to finally make a deal with him and let his family go. Instead, he took a step back and extended his arm pointing directly to Oh Hanji’s head and cocked his gun.
The police took a step closer to him, ready to aim at the man himself as Minji tried to push past everyone to get to her sister.
And just then a gun fired.

Chapter 3
-
The old woman should have just given her a list of rules rather than bombard her with a load of expectations all at once. Hanji desperately wished she had remembered to bring a notebook which was one of the things she always kept in her bag but surprisingly forgot to carry with her on her first day to work.
"Daeul is to arise at eight in the morning and head straight to bed no later than eight-thirty in the evening.", the woman whose name she was now aware of, Missus Song-I Chae who was the head housekeeper but preferred to be called Missus Chae, continued as she led Hanji through a tour of the large estate, beginning with the kitchen and dining room. Her eyes widened at the large stove and counters which she knew were reserved for the two cooks in the house, both whom she had yet to be introduced to.
As they crossed the dining room floor where she had her interview, Missus Chae led her up the wooden stairs and stopped at the seventh step upon hearing a creak. Hanji held her breath, eyes wide as she wondered why the woman had stopped.
"Mister Song!", she yelled and in rushed a man who seemed to be only a few years younger than the elder woman, wearing a plain blue t-shirt and denim jeans.
"Y-Yes, Missus Chae?", his voice shook.
The old woman turned slowly to face him, a stern look on her face almost scaring Hanji.
"I thought I told you to fix these steps as soon as possible. We wouldn't want the boy nor his father to fall now, would we?", she said in one of those calm tones which were always the scariest to deal with.
The young Hanji's mouth held agape, fearing for the man at the bottom of the stairs. He nodded quickly, muttering a small apology and reassuring her that the deed would be done before rushing quickly to the back of the house.
Missus Chae glanced at Hanji before proceeding up the stairs. The younger female exhaled slowly and quietly, already knowing that she and the elder woman would have a difficult time getting along.
They had finally reached the second floor and stood in front of a white door.
"This is Daeul's bedroom -- he is not to be in here unless it's the morning or his bedtime. Mister Kwon prefers his son spend his time in his playroom downstairs where he can learn and interact with others.", the housekeeper said as she slowly opened the door, revealing four pale blue walls with a bed set of a darker shade of the same colour.
Next to the small bed stood a black nightstand with a plain white lamp and on the bed itself, a familiar doll.
Hanji furrowed her brows upon examining the doll -- it was the same pink stuffed doll, an animal she was unable to distinguish. She remembered the day of her interview and having seen the doll on the sidewalk and the little boy who picked it up, along with the snobby man whom she thought was unfit to be a parent.
Before she had time to ask Missus Chae about it and the playroom which she had yet to see, she heard the sound of the glass door opening along with voices on the lower floor. Missus Chae seemed to have heard it too as she quickly rushed Hanji out of the room and down the stairs.
"Mister Kwon has returned early, Hanji. Now's the time you meet him and his son so fix yourself.", she warned through her teeth as they almost tripped on one another on the staircase.
Upon reaching the bottom floor, Hanji dusted off her black and white Peter Pan-collared blouse and paper-bag pants. Before her stood a small boy who much like the doll upstairs, looked all too familiar.
He was mid-removing his shoes with the help of another housekeeper because although the Kwons were wealthy, they were still Asian and dirty shoes meant more work for the helpers especially with the little boy who enjoyed running about. Well at least that's what Missus Chae had told Hanji.
"Oh?", he pointed at Hanji with his mouth slightly open, making her widen her eyes in surprise.
Th-This kid?, she thought to herself.
Daeul remained shocked at the sight of Hanji which she interpreted as him having remembered her too.
Wait. That means...
"I'm going back to the studio right away, he wasn't going to come home unless I came along to drop him off...", she heard a deep voice say to Missus Chae.
Her heart pounded heavily, her palms sweated and her breathing staggered as the voice got closer and closer. She prayed ever so quickly in her head that it would not be the person she had in mind -- that her new employer was not the man she --
"Hyuk, this is Oh Hanji -- Daeul's new caretaker.", the elder housekeeper introduced.
Hanji cursed mentally, keeping her eyes low and even afraid to make eye contact with the little boy. She knew all eyes were on her but feared to face the man in front of her, and even the sight of his black dress shoes frightened her.
It was not until she heard the elder woman whisper her name did she slowly lift her head up, meeting his eyes. She gulped loudly, knowing her assumptions were correct and he was indeed the man whom she had told off days before.
She could practically hear her sister's voice scolding her, right then and there. Minji would say, "Nice going, idiot girl! Say bye-bye to England."
Surprisingly, the man in front of her held a blank expression on his face. His narrow eyes looking deeply into hers, making her feel unsure of what he could have been thinking. His hands rested in his black dress-pants which complimented his solid gray short-sleeved top, exposing his arms.
Everything about him seemed even more intimidating -- his tall posture, dark brown hair tied into a bun with a few lose curls hanging down his temples, his chiseled facial features.
"G-Good morning, sir. My, my name is Oh Hanji, your son Daeul's new c-caretaker.", she spoke softly as she bowed slightly.
For a while it was nothing but awkward silence -- he had no reaction and didn't utter a word. Instead, he stared at her with the same blank expression before chuckling lightly which displayed the top of his perfect set of teeth.
"Missus Chae, will you take Daeul to the playroom please?", he asked lightly, making the said woman act quickly to lead the boy away.
Oh, gosh this is it, Hanji said to herself once they were alone.
"I am so sorry, Mister Kwon!", she bowed at a perfect ninety-degree angle, showing her respect and sincerity before the man. She waited a few seconds before straightening her posture once more and fixed her brown curly hair.
He grinned slightly, taking a few steps closer to her with his hands still in his pockets. Tilting his head, he sighed lightly.
"Welcome, Miss Oh. I'm sure you'll teach me what you believe parenting is."
