Mac
Full name: Mackenzie Jean McFulton Age: 16 Birthday: September 4, 1882 Backstory: Mac is second-in-command of the Brooklyn newsies behind Spot Conlon. As her right hand man, Mac doesn't take any shit from any of the other boroughs, but is also a loving caregiver to her younger newsies in Brooklyn. But if anyone does anything to one of her girls, she'll scalp you in a heartbeat. Also has a surprising amount of medical knowledge and is who the girls turn to in times of sickness or injury. Spot's confidant who also gets very frustrated by Spot's refusal to make a move in her love life quite frequently. Probably a literal saint.
Verses
v: carrying the banner - This is the main newsies canon verse and contains any event that happens before, during, and after the strike. May also contain a few years beyond the strike.
v: the new century - Modern AU verse. Typically has Mac in her twenties and college aged rather than a teenager. Modern Spot grows up to be a nurse in labor and delivery and later on a midwife.
v: a tale of two brooklyns - In this verse with hauntthumans, there are two distinct groups of newsies in Brooklyn: Spot Conlon and his boys and Mac with her girls. They 1000% do not get along and must figure out a way to coexist in the borough.

The air conditioning seems to roar to life. It's crude and rude and loud; it interrupts thoughts of self-pity, of her fall from grace. So Mackenzie — currently nineteen or twenty years old, not the nearly thirty-year-old woman we've come to know from previous stories — shivers.
It's funny — it's like God is trying to tell her something, trying to warn her. Watch out. Stay on high alert. She likes these communications from God. They remind her that she was always on the right path, that she still is, even now — separated from Cass, from JM, vilified by much of the world and (disturbingly enough) pitied by the rest of it.
Of course, there is a worldly — if not insidious and a bit twisted — explanation for the damn-near insufferable cold Mackenzie feels exactly one hour before Frederick Chilton visits her contained bedroom. But she doesn't have time-lent experience here to begin recording temperature changes and predicting Chilton's behavior, and it's nicer to go with the God thing. For the first time in her life, Mackenzie is fully leaning into the whole God thing.
Mackenzie Knight gets caught this time because of the fire. (It's not in every universe that Mackenzie Knight sets fire to her father's community, but in this one, it feels appropriate, if not necessary.) She thought she was destroying enough evidence, enough shallowly-buried bodies — the piano player, the farmer, the little girl, her own elder brother — to get away with everything she needed to get away with. Instead, the fire attracts attention, emergency responders.
Idris and Shipley were gone days before the fire itself; most other cult members — including Henry Sinclair and his sister Rose — had abandoned their belief in Knight at some point during Mackenzie's killing spree. Mack and Cass and JM remained to watch the fire burn; anyone else who'd stuck around — perhaps waiting (in vain) for Idris to return with Biblical dramatic flair; when would be a better time for that than the last possible second? — fled to cry for more help.
Then the arrest. The being thrust into the modern world — but only seeing it from the perspective of a felon, a madwoman. The world treats you differently when they know you're not just a victim.
Actually, the world doesn't really know what to do with Mackenzie Knight as a whole — someone like her, some sick and convoluted combination of terror and terrorized, defies the commonalities found in mass public opinion. Frederick Chilton is her first chance in a long time to tell what people — people she knows nothing about, really — think about what she's done. He's more of her connection to the outside world than the orderlies or janitors or attendants. Even during the extent of this encounter, he's asked more questions about how she feels than anyone since her psych eval days ago.
Shit — why does it matter what people think of her? Why does it matter if these strangers, these nonbelievers (of her father, naturally, but also nonbelievers of Mackenzie Knight)
"Mackenzie's fine," she says dully, even though she's always preferred Mack with family and Cass and JM — the only people she's ever known. Frederick Chilton doesn't feel like family, immediately, and it's strange — because everyone Mack has ever known has been neatly compartmentalized into two social groups. Frederick defies definition.
"I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that," she says, slowly getting worked up — arms crossed defensively. "Cult this, cult that. It's a short, ugly word. I don't like it. I don't think it could ever describe me, where I came from. We are church people. God-lovin', God-fearin' people."
Mackenzie opens her mouth, and the fanatic comes out.
"So, no. I ain't comfortable. I don't have a clue what's going on. Don't you get that?"
@vitalphenomena for mack.
The most essential electronic feature in the Baltimore State Hospital that Frederick employs (aside from his office's espresso machine or the automized locks installed in every door thick enough to contain one) is the site-wide thermostat. Therapy rooms are kept at a cool sixty-two degrees fahrenheit; it is harder to lie convincingly when one is physically uncomfortable, however minimal or subliminal. Effectiveness is consistent regardless of a patient's awareness of such tactics: the cold will not dissipate whether one notices it or not. (Behavior, notably, is much the same.) In fact, registering it or its purpose only serves to amplify its presence.
Exactly an hour before private sessions within a patient's room, the silver vent in the corner of the ceiling hisses to life like a long, metal reptile coiled (in sharp, forty-five degree angles) in the rafters.
Many rooms fill with this sluggish-chill—a cold, constricted blue—throughout the day. Often, patients or staff shiver when Frederick passes them in the hallway; a simple conditioned response the uncritical misattribute to fear. An assumption, however, he makes no effort to undo.
The astute quietly conspire, voices so low the cameras present in nearly every room and hall can't detect any chatter. They talk at medical carts (staff) or through toilet plumbing (patients) or all together in the common rooms; a group can predict which branch of the facility Frederick will visit that day solely by recording room temperatures.
He's storming the halls, he hears an officer whisper as he passes through administration. Cute. An impotent hurricane with a limp, a nurse replies. He'll reassign her shift to the noncompliant quarters.
Frederick is never cold. His two piece suits keep him well insulated during the hour-long sessions. Today, he chose a wool jacket and pants. Thick, coarse fabric; stiff but remarkably pliable; a beautifully dyed brown plaid with a pocket square tucked in the hidden breast pocket stitched into the satin lining of his jacket, there in the event that his face or neck show any signs of perspiration; the sensation of warm abundance is an experience allotted to him alone of which he makes no effort to hide amongst patients—and some staff.
This will be his first formal session with Miss Mackenzie Knight. She has been temporarily assigned to the high security women's hall as she undergoes evaluation. After two days, she was approved by the attending psychologist for private interactions. He'll wait no longer than that. Of course, in this section, there's no true privacy. Cushioned walls separate each cell, but thin, horizontal bars—wide enough for voices and for arms—display each patient to the hallway and whatever figures may be loitering therein. There are no individual vents here since every room is, in a sense, conjoined. But the single vent is on. Frederick feels it at the nape of his neck, on the slim area of exposed skin between his weekly-cut hair and starched, blue collar as he enters the hallway. That chill wind hissing out like an invisible snake tongue.
Frederick carries with him nothing. Mackenzie has no backlog of hospital records for him to refer to. No written reports were found in the wreckage. Not hers, or anyone's. It would seem either the cult had no interest in writing physical or mental reports, no interest in physical or mental resources, or the records were burned along with everything else on the compound. A query, among many, Frederick mentally makes note of.
He does not peer into the other cells as he walks by. His attention is pointedly, consciously set forward. He walks with a casual, strained poise, shoulders sharp, their movement smooth then lurching with the new integration of a cane. Refusal to acknowledge a patient or their actions is the most efficient way to diffuse misbehavior and promote compliance. Like ignoring a toddler's tantrum. Some thrash against the bars, some yell. He reacts to none of it. Mackenzie's cell is last. Not unplanned: it is the closest to the hallway camera. But an annoying distance nonetheless.
A foldout chair is already set out, heralding Frederick's arrival. He steps behind it, into view, and fixes his gaze on his own hands as they wrap around the top of the backrest; he leans forward, relieving weight from his concave abdomen. Once situated, his gaze flicks up (his eyes large, weighty—pinning) then his head rises to meet hers, seeing her in-person for the first time (he had watched a few initial assessments on the camera feed in the comfort of his office during his lunch break; he found her to be remarkably rational for a girl who attempted to, and largely succeeded in, killing her entire family only a few weeks ago).
She is sitting on her bed. She looks approachable. She looks ordinary. Comfortable. Like a college student in her freshman dorm room. Frederick smiles, a flash of intrigue and excitement he does not conceal. "Hello, Miss Knight. Or, would you prefer Mackenzie? I apologize for the enforced uniform. An institution such as this shares more than a few characteristics with cults." The air conditioner kicks onto a heavier setting; louder, churning. His gaze momentarily drifts towards the noise, then back to her. Smiling, because he is able to indulge his own machinations under the guise of cordiality: "Are you comfortable?"

Etymology for (almost) Every New Splatband Characters Name
———————————————
Front Roe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of their aliases are in reference to the meanings of their original names. Their numbers probably just represent the order they’re usually introduced in when referred to out of universe (with Murasaki being bumped up to 3)
001Ngt/001Nite - Ichiya (One night sushi)
002Wsb/002Wsbi - Namida (A type of wasabi used by sushi chefs)
003Soy/003Soss - Murasaki (A type of soy sauce)
004Clm/004Clam - We don’t know his real name but he sure is a clam.
———————————————
Damp Socks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
キズシ [Kizushi] - きずし [Kizushi] is a type of sushi in which a fish (usually a mackerel) is soaked in vinegar.
Vinny Mack - In reference to their Japanese name. Vinny(gar) Mack(erel).
明石さん [Akashi-san] - Akashi is a surname but is more likely in reference to 明石焼き [Akashiyaki], a dumpling is made of an egg batter and octopus dipped into dashi (a fish broth). “San” is an honorific that is equivalent to Mr/Mrs in English.
Garris - Garris alludes me. I’ve spent actual hours trying to figure out what the name is referring to and I can’t figure it out. Maybe I’m missing something obvious but until someone tells me what it is I will remain stumped.
アンドウヨウジ [Andō Yōji] - アンコウ[Ankō] is the Japanese name for anglerfish. ヨウジ [Yōji] is a common masculine Japanese given name.
Jhon Goose - Goosefish is another name for anglerfish. Jhon is a common masculine English given name.
———————————————
Yoko and the Gold Bazookas:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
兵頭タオ [Hyoudou Tao] - Hyoudou is a Japanese surname which in this case seems to be a shortened version of ひょうもんだこ [hyoumondako], the Japanese name for the blue ringed octopus. “Tao” could be a reference to タコ [Tako], the Japanese word for octopus, but it could very well be referencing something else.
Tao Blu - Blu is in reference to them being a blue ringed octopus. See above for their given name.
Toxy - Derived from the word “toxic”.
Tosh - Most likely taken from their Japanese name.
キタノ [Kitano] - “キタノクジャクイカ” [Kitanokujakuika] is the Japanese name for Taonius borealis, a species of glass squid which they seem to be based on.
Martin - This one I’m not sure about! The best I’ve got is the possibility their name is derived from the word “Martian” due to their alien-like appearance.
トグロ [Toguro] - The toguro squid is a species of deep sea squid.
Jessika - A play on the name Jessica, replacing the “c” with a “k” to make “ika” (the Japanese word for squid).
———————————————
H2Whoa:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHIMA - シマダコ [Shima dako] is a species of (you guessed it) octopus, which shares a similar pattern of stripes to the character.
Lionel - The best I’ve got is that it COULD be a reference to how mimic octopuses (which have a similar stripe pattern to the characters tentacles) tend to mimic lionfish. That seems like a stretch to me too but it’s the only thing I could think of.
NAGARE - Their appearance is based on ナガレハナ [Nagarehana] coral.
Cora - As seen above, they are a species of coral.
———————————————
I’m so tired. Hope this was an interesting read. Hate you forever Garris.
