Zahir smirked reaching for a couple bags of bagels from the shelf to take to work, a little treat for his employees. He couldnāt really say he was good at flirting. When heād met his wife, it had been more of a chance meeting. Some days he thought she just took pity on him and granted while something flourished out of that, heād never been sure itād happen again. Heād resigned himself to that most days, but there was something about Aria that nudged him a bit from behind that wall, even if it was just to annoy her. His eyebrow raised as she turned to him, squared up and staring him down. He was tempted to step back, but something kept him in place.Ā āDoesnāt have to be a date, just dinner, a night away, with someone who instinctively annoys you but makes a damn good mealā
Slowly, Aria pushed her cart to the dairy aisle. She needed milk, cheese, and eggs. They were the last things on her list and then she could finally check out. It annoyed her a bit that sheād found herself almost unconsciously matching her pace to Zahirās, all so she could keep up this conversation. āIām tempted to say no, just because you didnāt actually ask,ā she pointed out. She brought the cart to a stop, turning to face him. āI have a feeling this could either work out well for both of us or end in a dumpster fire. Call it morbid curiosity, but Iād like to see which one it is. So yes, pick me up after work tomorrow. Itās the one day Iām off, so if you miss your chance, there may not be another one for a while.ā

Savior. Zahir winced at the word, albeit briefly before his face fell back into itās usual mask. It had been a decade and his reaction to the word never lessoned, though it was often easier for him to hide. Sheād been sarcastic as she said it he knew that but it didnāt stop the images conjured up behind his eyes or the subtle itch of wounds long healed. The memory of the woman he couldnāt save, gone now 10 years from his life, as of a week ago. Pushing it all back down, his head shifted toward as the wordsĀ ālittle homeless puppyā and his face fell into an all to familiar smirk. āI feel like my aunt Alex would take offense to that however I do not. Puppies are cute after all. I think Iād make a great Bolognese. Iāve got the hair for itā He chuckles handing the box over to her before reaching up to scratch his arm.Ā āI should have asked for a better ransom thanĀ āpleaseāāĀ
āDid you just compliment yourself?ā Aria shot Zahir a skeptical glance. āTakes a special kind of person to do that,ā she continued. She accepted the cereal with a slight nod of her head -- it wasnāt gratitude, she told herself, just simple politeness -- and dropped it into her cart. āOkay.ā Aria sighed. She was seriously wondering how sheād gotten unlucky enough to run into Zahir today. Sheād expected to spend her day off peacefully running errands, but now, here she was, locked in a spirited conversation with a man she couldnāt stand. āIāll bite. What would you have asked for?ā
