“That is true.” agreed Kimberly with a nod. It was nice to get those reminders when she least expects it, especially from a good friend. “Right...It has, but I guess I’m kind of scared that it’s growing into some big consequence that I’m not aware of yet.” Sure, no news is good news, but the repercussions of her actions would surely come in due time. Shaking her head, the heiress puffed her cheeks and added, “Or maybe I’m being completely dramatic, I guess only time will tell and technically I should be focusing on the present, nothing has happened and that’s what matters most.” The little pep talk was enough to build a bit of confidence in her life choice as she was trying not to completely psyche herself out, especially after what she had gone through.
“You’re practically glowing!” mused Kimmie with a bright smile as she was ecstatic at the news. “I’m really happy for you." However, after hearing that Ariya had the same intention, the heiress rolled her eyes playfully and said, "We mean well and if anything you are lucky to have us by your side. But I trust you, and if he's worth it then we won't have anything to worry about." Glancing down at her watch, she noticed the time and realized that she had to head out for her nail appointment. "It was nice catching up with you Shivi, but I should head out as I have to get my nails done and of course give you your time back to set up for your upcoming classes..." Hugging her briefly, she then let go and said, "I meant what I said earlier...I still want to make that donation. Let's keep in touch and we can make the transfer happen, mmkays? Love you!"
Truly when Shivani woke up this morning, she hadn’t a clue that she was going to be told that her friend was actually an heiress. That news really did stun her, enough that she might be inclined on googling her later just to better understand the life and the world Kimberly came from. But for now—this woman in front of her had changed and she was still someone that Shivani regarded as a friend. She nodded as the other spoke about being overly independent and how these reminders helped her. “Well—you know you’ve always got me here to remind you,” she replied with a smile before hearing the other speak about her fears which had her honestly feeling bad because she didn’t expect her friend to be feeling this way. “No—I mean you said it’s been a couple years right? If there were repercussions of any type, they’d have happened, don’t you think?” She nodded as Kimberly spoke about being in a better place now that she was here in Wilmington and hoped that it was how it lasted for the other girl.
When she admitted the development in her and Axel’s relationship, the flush on her cheeks was too be expected as the other cooed in her excitement. Sharing things like this with someone she regarded as a friend was so nice and she appreciated Kimberly’s words so much. “Thank you babe, and yes—I’m so happy, he just—he’s always been incredible as a friend and even now, I just—I don’t know how I got so lucky, if I’m being honest,” Shivani admitted these words cautiously as if she’d sound ungrateful because that was truly the last thing she felt. When Kimberly warned about him treating her right, she couldn’t help the soft chuckle before nodding, “you and Ariya both are so quick to threaten…but come on, he’s been my friend for all these years, he’s not going to hurt me.” Shivani said with a laugh, knowing full well that she could easily get over attached to him; even more than she currently was and that he definitely had the potential to break her heart.

❛ ☾ ◟━ LOCATION: lincoln park
❛ ☾ ◟━ TIME: afternoon
❛ ☾ ◟━ STATUS: closed for @shivanixrao
Making her way into Lincoln Park, Gwendolyn re-read her messages and began searching for the landmark where she said she would meet Shivani. The two had set up time together to discuss some matters that needed to be brought to Gwen's attention. Approaching the bench with a tray of drinks, she took the seat next to the dance studio owner and greeted her with a warm smile, "Hope you weren't waiting too long?" Taking both of the drinks off the tray, she held them up to Shivani and said, "I wasn't sure what you wanted, so this one is tea and the other is coffee. Feel free to pick one, the mini packets of creamer and sugar are in my pockets, so let me know how much you need."

“So it isn’t as bad as having two left feet,” Ruhi began as she stepped into the dance studio and surveyed the talent with which her friend performed in comparison to her own lackluster attempts. She’d always thought she was a fairly good dancer, but clearly professionals were a class above. “But I feel like I’m doing the macarena when I’m around you and I don't love being outshined in my own hometown like this. So let's go. It's my turn to show off my expertise.”

WITH: @shivanixrao LOCATION: her apartment
Now that he was back, he was trying to make it more of a point to visit his parents on a near regular basis. After all, that was the whole reason that he decided to come back to his hometown rather than stay back in D.C. But while he was thankful for the time he got to spend with them, it was hard to deny that there would always be a looming sense of melancholy that surrounded them. Despite the years it had been since his brother’s passing, his loss would never leave them. And how could it? His father had witnessed too much death in his life and where Ved had no memories of his birth mother, her loss still weighed on him as well. Shuffling on his feet, he stood outside Shivani’s door with a bag in hand, running the errand that his mom would have otherwise handled. As the door opened, he gave a short nod in greeting. “Surprise,” he began, pressing his lips into a tight line. “Ma sent me. She said you had something to give her, but she sprained her ankle the other day.” Perhaps a fact that the younger woman knew. He didn’t know how frequently they spoke after all. Which was why his explanation of his presence might have been equally redundant.

Shivani got her there.
"To be fair, I feel like I've been a great addition to the team and was able to influence them into work-life balance. With that being said I increased self-care by...something percent." recited Kimberly in a matter of fact tone. However, within seconds her demeanour broke out into laughter as she couldn't keep it together. Who was she kidding? While her statement was partially true, it didn't mean that it was easy to even achieve such a thing. "Okay true...but both your stresses are still considered stress, no?" She then playfully winked at Shivani before hearing out her response.
"I'm down to try new things, so I'll just go with the flow of it all. It should be fun!" Kimberly knew better than to set any expectations. If anything, she had to learn to be open to it and then from there figure out if its worth it. "You're very welcome and yes, I will keep you in the loop. If it goes well, then maybe you're in for a matchmaking side hustle." Grabbing both their smoothies, she handed one to the dancer before leading her to a nearby table to enjoy and chat the rest of the night away.
[ END. ]
Shivani didn’t miss the look on Kimberly’s face as she admitted to not entirely practicing this philosophy that she was preaching to her. “Hmmm, I doubt that,” she grinned at her friend even though she did understand the instability in her line of work. Things changed in an instance and you just had to roll with it the best you could. “I’m definitely different, for starters—the level of stress our mayor deals with is very different to the level of stress I deal with,” she told her friend as they continued their walk.
“I mean—I might be?” Shivani hadn’t actually set up that many people before in her life but there was something about her conversation with Benji during the springtide event that had her feeling like maybe her gut was right here. So she could only suggest and hope that the odds were in their favour when they found their way together. “And even if nothing comes from this, maybe you’ll gain a new friend?” She chuckled and nodded at Kimberly’s response, “you better keep me in the loop, if it works out—I’ll start my own matchmaking business and use you as my success story,” she smiled before rolling her eyes at the other’s offer. She placed her own order before shaking her head again at Kimberly, “you didn’t need to do that, but I appreciate it nonetheless.” And all in all, she knew this was going to be a great afternoon they spent together just de-stressing.

“I’m glad I can actually see your face this time around,” Ethan joked as he slid into the booth, remembering that the last time they ran into each other during the blackout they hadn’t gotten a proper chance to catch up. “Though I wonder what brings you to my humble city from your extravagant one.” Shivani had been one of the few people that he grew close to outside of his own program while at Julliard. However, as with most of the friends from that time, he’d naturally pulled away following his accident. Without a proper justification, he couldn’t flout another invitation, so he decided that since she was in town anyways, he ought to catch up with her. How long could he run from anyone and anything related to that time of his life?

“At the risk of offending you and however many million other people,” Lily paused for a second, casting her glance over at her friend. “Though now that I know about your track record of punching people, it’s you I’m more worried about insulting,” with the jibe thrown in, she continued. “I’ve never felt a need to visit New York. Too many people. Too busy. Too dirty.” There were a number of positives of the city, she was sure. But Lily truthfully felt it was all overdone. Everyone seemed to want to go to New York, and she had always avoided the places and things that most people wanted. Rather she ended up in states without a lot of people, hunting her parents who seemed to also be searching for isolated places. “I’m always down for some friendly sparring. It’ll give me a chance to see just how dangerous you are to the people of Wilmington.” She teased, truly unable to shake the image of Shivani punching someone and immediately apologizing for doing so despite being assured that the other woman was not like that.
As Shivani began discussing her parents, Lily had absolutely no idea what that must have felt like. The guilt of a child who both wanted to do more for their parents, but also felt like they couldn’t do more than they were. So when Shivani concluded with the phrase, ‘you know,’ Lily could honestly say she did not. All she knew was how to try and find parents who didn’t want her, not for answers, not out of resentment or bitterness. Just for some sort of clarity. “Why are you feeling guilty? You’re doing what you can and that’s that. You can’t kill yourself to make things easier on them.” Maybe she could. Maybe that was what good children did. But Lily didn’t think she could do that for anyone. While Shivani recounted her realization of feelings towards her best friend, Lily again felt like a fish out of water. Though this was one thing she could almost empathize with. How would she have reacted if one day she realized that she developed feelings for someone she just considered a friend? “That sounds,” Lily tried to hold her tongue before she said her true feelings and caused more heartache than Shivani might have already been experiencing given that her feelings were apparently one-sided. “Do you think you could go back to ignoring them? Convince yourself that he’s just a friend again?” / @shivanixrao
“I still can’t believe you’ve never been,” Shivani mentioned even though there were a lot of people who hadn’t been to New York and honestly it wasn't always on everyone’s travel destination list. Still she nodded happily along with what Lily said because it was true. Shivani may have an innocent looking face but she could be a downright menace when she needed to be. “You’ve got that right…I like that thought process, thanks babe,” she grinned at Lily before taking a sip of the drink in front of her. She’d only really gotten into any sort of physical altercations back in New York over messed up situations but liked to believe that if push came to shove, she’d be able to have someone’s back if the needed her. And given how Lily was a close friend and most probably someone who didn’t need Shivani to have her back, she still felt that way regardless. “I feel like we should head to the boxing room or something one of these days, do a little sparring sessions together?” The idea was actually quite exciting and would give Shivani another way to get in some cardio and exercise that might end up being fun.
“Look at you, being so courteous by splitting with me as well,” she grinned at her friend before nodding in agreement about their being little downside. She would still be close enough to the neighbourhood she’d always loved but would have the chance to see a different side to it almost in a brand new unit. And plus having Lily close by anything would be good for her to catch up with her friend. “Okay yes that’s perfect for me, just let me know when and I’ll work it into my schedule,” she told Lily with a smile. That very smile faded slightly when she mentioned having gone back to see her parents and Lily’s follow up question before she shrugged, "I just—I always like going back to New York but every single time I do—it’s like they remind me of all the problems they’re having financially and then I feel guilty despite doing everything I can to help out, you know?” Shivani shook her head, not wanting to talk about it anymore knowing it would just drag down this conversation as well. When she confessed about kissing Axel, she had hoped there would be a slim chance that Lily would let it slide—but of course she wouldn’t. “Not exactly—I think it's more of the latter…I've always had some feelings buried deep down but I always tried to ignore them." Shivani explained, her fingers now playing with the condensation on the side of her glass. “It's like—we’ve been friends for so many years and I just don't think he sees me as anything more than his best friend, you know?”

BIOGRAPHY;
Shivani Rao was born in Mumbai, India into a very loving home. She was the younger of two sisters and had no complaints throughout her early childhood. Her father and mother got the opportunity to move to New York when Shivani was about eight years old. They were going to be managing a Indian grocery store location in the suburbs and the girls would be transitioning to becoming American citizens. Her mother was already a US citizen as she had been born there, but her father had to work extremely hard to gain his own citizenship and while the girls were still young, and one of their parents was a citizen they were also able to gain citizenship a little easier.
Middle school was the worst time for little Shivani’s life as she just did not fit in. She felt like while she was in a prominently Indian neighbourhood, she didn’t fit in with the kids born there either. And so she all but threw herself into dance. Dance had been a love of hers since she was back home in India and allowing it to move with her to New York had been important for Shivani. This love allowed her to thrive on a public stage and gain fame even if it was through the community. Still her father saw something in her performances and encouraged her to apply to Juilliard. At this point despite being relatively middle-class, she didn’t want to apply knowing that if she got accepted but didn’t get a scholarship all her dreams would crash. But given her financial standing and her exceptional talent, she’d managed to get a scholarship.
Those four years getting her bachelor of fine arts in dance had been nothing short of wonderful. She had found friends who understood that level of dedication and passion that she possessed as well. Upon graduation she’d opted to work on off-broadway for a few years and had been part of some shows while continuing to audition for broadway level shows as well. One day she’d been told she was one of the top two contenders and Shivani had to do anything she could to become the one on top. She did. She edged out her competition, her best friend at the time and made it.
The success was short-lived though as it was during one of the shoes that her harness snapped and she fell to the stage from a bit of a height. Shivani’s ankle was severely damaged. Enough that the position would be filled by her understudy, that same best friend who had been her competition. Becoming a failure hadn’t sat well with Shivani at all and while her family told her that it was okay and she could always move back home to Queens, New York—she refused to do that. She had been living a life in Manhattan—she couldn’t go back to living with her parents.
It took some time and a lot of different applications sent around the country until finally one picked up in Wilmington, North Carolina. They had a vacancy for a dance instructor and so Shivani packed up her belongings and made her way there. It had been an adjustment but she’s now been here for about five years and managed to buy out the previous owner of the dance studio as well. Her injury made is so that she couldn’t really ever put as much pressure on it as she once used to during practices but she was still able to teach dance and so she continues to do that, while trying to make peace with what her life could’ve been had she perhaps not messed up in the way she did.
HEADCANONS;
shivani is quite religious and has a little mandir set up in a corner of her home.
she's often humming the latest indian track she's heard and ensuring everyone around her listens to it as well.
she loves cooking and will often be cooking for people even if they don't ask.
shivani's got two tattoos, both on her rib cages. one that says 'naach' which means dance in devanagari script. and the other is a pair of ghungroo's which was the first dance form she learnt.
she's classically trained in kathak, and jazz officially but doesn't get the chance to teach that anymore and does more hip hop and freestyle along with some simple ballet.
she will go to despicable lengths for a costco chocolate chip cookie, and the subway ones as well.
she misses her family quite a bit but knows that if she heads back to new york she'll feel like a failure because the rest of her family is successful and she doesn't think she's lived up to the potential her father saw in her.
she is almost always carrying a mini pharmacy in her purse, that and pretty much all essentials at all times.
has a little havenese dog that is named rolo and he is truly the love of her life.
attended a bachelorette party in vegas and ended up married on a whim. her parents still don't know and she'd prefer to keep it that way. (besides they got it annulled--maybe? 👀)

❛ ☾ ◟━ LOCATION: Feel the Beat Dance Studio
❛ ☾ ◟━ TIME: mid-morning
❛ ☾ ◟━ STATUS: closed for @shivanixrao
It took all of Kimberly's willpower to get out of bed as she got ready to face on the day. Currently, she chose to not wallow up at home and instead head over to Feel the Beat Dance Studio to visit Shivani. It's been a while since she had attended classes and she would be doing a disservice if she didn't give her friend a heads up that her plans will be changing for a while. Stopping by her usual smoothie place, she picked up two drinks before heading towards the studio. "Shivi?" she called out as she entered the establishment. "I got us some smoothies...And was hoping if this was a good time to chat?"

Gwendolyn had a feeling Shivani would answer her inquiry that way. When emotions were heightened for someone you care for, the logistics wouldn’t matter at that point. Furthermore, Axel Huges was someone who she cared for deeply and it looks like she was willing to protect him as much as possible. A bias was already presented, but Gwen appreciated her efforts in trying to find a compromise for the City’s sake. “Fair enough, thank you for confirming.” replied the Chief of Police in an understanding tone. Taking a sip of her coffee, her mind was racing with endless questions on whether Axel had truly been responsible for what had been happening. Was he calculated enough to plan all this out? Shaking her head, she snapped out of her thoughts and reassured the dancer it was not a problem. “No need to thank me, this was all you. I know it was difficult to come forward with all this, but you’ve made an effort in taking a step in the right direction to ensure our community is safe.” Chuckling softly, she sighed as she understood where the other woman was coming from since she’d heard that all the time and said, “Of course, I pride myself in ensuring those coming forward feel like they’re in a safe space to share such things. If there’s anything you need, case related or not, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.”
Being in this situation with Gwen hadn’t been something Shivani had ever anticipated, mostly because well she’d never thought she’d have information like this to share with the other. She nodded as she sipped the drink Gwen had brought out for her before she looked up at the other question. She could of course remember those red x’s on so many establishments but did she want to tell her? Not really…however she knew if she kept it—it could be seen as withholding evidence and so she took a deep breath and shrugged. “I don’t feel like any of it really made sense, just some places in the map that had X’s on it. I don’t know what that meant and honestly…I didn’t really want to ask.” She’d been too stunned by the revelation of all the lies in the first place. Shivani nodded when Gwen told her that she could reach out to her with more information that she remembered before she looked up as Gwen told her something she hadn’t realized she needed to hear. She was so thankful to the other woman for deciding to speak to him before making it official. “Thank you so much Gwen, really…” she took a deep breath before nodding once more and smiling as much as she could which wasn’t much given the situation that brought them together. “I hope it helps…and you catch whoever is behind all this but I really selfishly hope he has nothing to do with it.” With a pause she looked back at the other and nodded, “thank you also for agreeing to meet with me and not have it be at the police station, I feel like that might’ve intimidated me more…”
