turns out to have 15 lines of dialogue for a character you have to actually write for them…disappointed and surprised. anyway — here’s five lines from my three most enjoyable to write kiddos!

1. “Bugs in chocolate. It’s a thing, isn’t it? With the FDA? Thou shalt not have more than ‘x’ number of bug bits in every chocolate bar?”

2. “Well, let’s see,” she starts, pausing to pluck an olive from the bottom of her empty martini glass. “I’ve spent the last five years working for a covert terrorist organization without knowing it. My best friend — the only person I have ever trusted with my secrets — was somehow working for that covert terrorist organization without me ever clocking it, and her mother? Well, now I have her breathing down my neck asking me where her daughter is and why I never paid attention to the ‘multitude of red flags waving in my face’. Her words, not mine. Does that answer your question?”

3. “Is it treason to say you’re tired of Captain America? It feels like treason. I’m not going back to the Raft.”

4. “You’re gonna give me a heart attack, you know that? You’re gonna kill your mother.”

5. “Oh, haha. You’re an ass, you know that? Certifiable.”

1. “How come you always think that’s the reason, huh? That I’m jealous? Maybe he’s just a dick.”

2. “I don’t think I can be better than this,” he finally admits, his voice wobbly and thick. “I don’t think I can.”

3. “What? No, Grandma, he didn’t have to—he was just making sure I got in okay. It’s fine. See? I’m fine.”

4. “I miss him,” he rasps, sucking in a shuddery, hiccuped breath. “I miss her, I miss Lily—“

5. “I do feel better now that you’re here.”

1. "No stingrays," Ryan conceded, his answer met with a disappointed stare. "Got stung by a jellyfish a couple years ago in Costa Rica, though."

2. “I haven’t been sleeping well,” he said eventually, frustrated with himself and Mark and the absurdity of it all. “It’s nothing. Just stress. Not sure if you’re aware, but this isn’t exactly an easy job. Or fun, for that matter.”

3. God, he didn’t even know. It had been a long time, and Ryan had done about as much as he could to block out the memory of his own skin burning underneath the end of a cigarette. The smell had been unbearable. “I don’t—I was a kid.”

4. “I’m gonna kiss you again,” he said. His breath ghosted over her lips. “If that’s okay.”

5. “Hey,” Ryan said after a while, rolling his head towards her. There was a playful kind of gleam in his eyes. “Tell me again how brave and heroic I was.”

Australia Rugby League Preview

Nathan Cleary and Daly Cherry-Evans are set to combine in the halves together for Australia after coach Mal Meninga opted to rest Cameron Munster for the Kangaroos’ final round pool match of the World Cup against Italy on Sunday morning (AEDT).

Munster, who leads all players in the tournament with five try assists in the opening two games, has not been named as part of the Kangaroos’ 19-man squad.

Instead, it is expected that Cleary and Cherry-Evans — who split the halfback duties in the opening two games — will combine together to face the Azzurri, with a win officially confirming the green and golds’ place in the quarter-finals.

The tournament’s leading try-scorer Josh Addo-Carr has also been rested by Meninga, along with hooker Harry Grant, while forwards Angus Crichton and Jake Trbojevic have been left out after featuring in the earlier two matches.

Cowboys trio Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai and Murray Taulagi all return to the squad, while Latrell Mitchell is also back after being rested last week.

Ever read a book and wonder what the movie is like? Here are some of the best books that were turned into movies. Keep in mind the book is always better than the movie.

Fear Street 

The 3 movies  loosely based on Fear Street came out in July off 2021 on Netflix. The Fear family curse was the main focus of the movie. Fear Street is a series of books written by R.L. Stine. Set in a fictionalized town of Shadyside and features average teenagers who encounter murderers or ghosts the first book was released in 1989 called the new girl. The series is named after the Fear family. Their name was originally spelled Fier; after hearing that the family was cursed and the letters could be rearranged to spell "fire", Simon Fier changed his name to Fear in the 19th century. Despite the family changing the spelling of their name and the renaming, the curse has survived, and Simon and his wife, Angelica, brought it with them when they moved to Shadyside sometime after the Civil War. The curse originally started in Puritan (17th-century) times when Benjamin and Matthew Fier sentenced an innocent girl and her mother, Susannah and Martha Goode, who were allegedly  witches and to be burned at the stake for allegedly practicing witchcraft. Her father and husband, William Goode, put the curse on the Fiers to avenge their deaths, bringing misery and death to the family for years to come. The arc of the story is about Harry's enemy Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who intends to become immortal and what's to overthrow the wizard governing body also known as the Ministry of Magic and subjugate all wizards and Muggles who are (non-magical people). Nancy drew

Nancy Drew is a fictional character who first appears in several mystery book series as a teenage amateur sleuth. The books are ghostwritten by a number of authors and published under the collective pseudonym Carolyn Keene. The first book is 

The Secret of the Old Clock (1930) Nancy Drew is a 2007 American mystery thriller film loosely based on the series of mystery novels about the titular teen detective of the same name by Edward Stratemeyer. She has been Portrayed by Bonita Granville (1938–39 films), Pamela Sue Martin (1977 TV series) who is my favorite Nancy Drew. Janet Louise Johnson (1977 TV series), Tracy Ryan (1995 TV series), Maggie Lawson (2002 TV film), Emma Roberts (2007 film) Emma was a great Nancy. Sophia Lillis (2019 film)  sadly she is my least favorite Nancy Drew and Kennedy McMann (2019 TV series) they could have done so much better with her character to make her seem more like the original Nancy Drew.

What Does Future State Mean for the DC Universe?

It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.

Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.

Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.

The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost, until Grant Morrison got his hands on them in the mid-aughts. He and some of the most brilliant artists of the era (Frazer Irving, JH Williams III, Ryan Sook, Doug Mahnke and more) put together a superteam crossover where a group of B and C list heroes stop evil faerie invaders from the future, come to harvest humanity. Also the heroes never meet. The climax is a series of brilliantly planned coincidences where the heroes just barely cross paths, or set up one accident that places the final blow just in time. It’s a superheroic Rube Goldberg machine.

The inciting events of each Future State book are all vastly different on their faces, but point to a more systemic collapse of something within DC’s multiverse/hypertime that could take a series of happy accidents to fix. The Speed Force and the Central Power Battery both go haywire at the same time. Something is different about dimensional barriers in Aquaman and Justice League – we’ve got a mystery Batman, a multiversal Flash, and an interdimensional hole in the ocean in Aquaman. The next generation of heroes are falling apart in Shazam and Teen Titans, and Amanda Waller has gone off the deep end in Suicide Squad. And it looks like magic users are hunted to a dangerous level between the Justice League Dark story and Swamp Thing.

The Black Adam One Million story feels like where something like a 7S conclusion might take place. It got a pretty strong push when we talked to Justice League group editor Alex Carr back in October, and that far in the futue, Adam might have the perspective and the means to nudge a couple of things into place in the past to try and set the multiverse right.

Finally, we’ll talk a bit about variant covers. That Red X cover, if conventions ever come back, is going to make Dustin Nguyen a substantial sum of money. The Future State Green Lantern variant will also likely bring in some cash for Jamal Campbell, but from a very different crowd. The kind of folks who are interested in hot G’Nortt original art. I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to unsee that.

“Andy Curry, daughter of Arthur and Mera, has had a pretty terrible month. Jackson Hyde, a.k.a. Aquaman, won’t stop calling her Aqualass when she’s told him a thousand times it’s Aquawoman. She’s manifested a new power that scares the absolute hell out of her. Oh, and she and Jackson just got ripped apart in the midst of a cosmic space ocean and she can’t find him anywhere! Large Scale Fanzine Scanning Projects (Fanac): Fandom History

A special thank you to Fanac - a science fiction and fantasy fandom group that has been working to preserve their corner of fandom history. Fanac focuses on literary (book) fandom, with an emphasis on science fiction and fantasy fanzines from the 1930s-1960s. They maintain a website that hosts many fanzines in PDF format. This year they started offering scanning stations at science fiction conventions where people can bring their zines to be scanned. They will have a scanning station at Dublin Worldcon this weekend. They also have a wonderful YouTube channel: https://youtuber.com/c/FANACFanHistory From their latest newsletter "At Boskone 56 (February) and again at Corflu 36 (May), we arranged with the conventions to set up our FANAC Scanning Station. We bring at least one scanner and computer and ask that fans bring fanzines to the convention that we can scan and archive online. This has been pretty successful, resulting in our scanning over 2,000 pages at Boskone and over 3,500 pages at Corflu. We had many notable contributions of fanzines for scanning, including from Grant Canfield, Frederic Gooding III, Susan Graham and her scanning team at UMBC, Rob Hansen, Dan Steffan, Geri Sullivan (2019 TAFF delegate), Pat Virzi and especially Rob Jackson who allowed us to scan a large stack of zines that were later auctioned for fan charities. Since Corflu, we’ve put over 600 fanzines online. We’ve arranged with the Dublin 2019 Worldcon to have a scanning station there as well. If you’re coming, bring something for us to scan. FANAC Fan History Project website: http://fanac.org  As of today, we have 8,069 fanzines online, with over 92,500 pages. Of those, 2,902 are newszines (and thanks to David Ritter for the first volume of Taurasi’s Fantasy News!). Recently, we’ve tried to increase the number of fanzine titles for which we have complete runs. These are as varied as Joe Kennedy’s Vampire (1940s) to Karen Anderson’s Vorpal Glass (1960s) to Benford/White/et al’s Void (1950s-1960s). Other recently complete runs include Aporrheta (Sanderson), Bane (Ryan), Bastion (Bentcliffe), BEM (Ashworth), Blat! (White/Steffan), Epsilon (Hansen), Oopsla! (Calkins), Pendulum (Venable), Pong (White/Steffan), Spaceways (Warner), Starspinkle (Ellik), Telos (Nielsen Hayden), and Tolkien Journal (Plotz/Meskys). 

As a sidelight, one of our favorite fans, Lee Hoffman, also published two of the earliest (if not the earliest) folk music fanzines, and we’ve put those online as well: Caravan (1957-59) and Gardyloo (1959-60). We’ve also been adding a lot of UK fanzines. These have ranged from the 1930s to the present. They include Maurice Hanson’s Novae Terrae (thanks to Rob Hansen for the scans), C.S. Youd’s (aka JohnChristopher) Fantast, plus the above listed zines BEM, Aporrheta, Bastion, and Epsilon. Others include: Weston’s Speculation, Clarke’s Eye, Joan Carr et al’s Femizine, Enever & Parker’s Orion, Berry’s Pot Pourri, and more. One more interesting item from the UK: thanks to Ian Sorensen, we have the transcript of the highly entertaining GoH speech that James White gave at the 1983 Eastercon in Glasgow, titled “The Scottish Influence on Sector General”. With our scanning station at Dublin 2019, we hope to add many Irish and other European fanzines.
