I was watching this Chinese variety show just to see Ricky and Zhang Hao but then I saw one of the hosts was Zhang Zhenyuan and now I want to cry… 😭💔
#He... Teens In Times deserve better you know?#I keep trying to accept that this is how China is and C-Pop doesn't need to do anything that K-Pop and J-Pop do but#The more I think about it the more unfair it seems... 😢#These Chinese idols train so much and when they debut they just don't get promoted#They don't releaze anything on YT and they just go to variety shows alone and this is it?#That's unfair! This is not why they trained for!#No wonder there are so many Chinese idols in K-Pop it's like “if you want to debut you have to learn Korean and live in SK”#Which is fine if they like SK but what if they don't want to leave China/Taiwan/Hong Kong?? 😭#Guys there's Chinese idols even in J-Pop nowadays!! They really said “I'd rather debut anywhere but China”!!#Again... not saying these idols don't like Japan. Just that they CAN'T CHOOSE whether they want to debut abroad or in their own country!#Even if C-Pop tries to do a little bit like K or J-Pop (ex.: BOY STORY BOYHOOD WayV and the now dead EXO-M)#Their companies DON'T PROMOTE THEM!!! They literally don't invest any money to promote their groups!!!#I'm still not over Asia Super Young and Loong9 in case you didn't notice... 🥺#But... Yeah... I just wish Teens In Times got more rep and that I could just turn my TV on and watch them TOGETHER#And that they had MVs and on YT and etc. (Basically everything I've seen J/K-Pop idols do)#But maybe that's just the K/J-Popper in me and I have to accept that China is China and they owe us nothing#Just because we're interested in East Asian culture doesn't mean they have to all do one thing like the others just to please us!#I will still (try to) stan TNT as much as I can (and as much as they allow me since I speak no Chinese)#Specially ChengXin 🥺 my darling#not kpop or jpop

Miami Vice S1E15: Golden Triangle, Part 2
Castillo learns his wife is still alive-- and in Miami.
Let me just start by saying: really getting the sense no one who worked on this show knew that there are multiple countries and cultures in Asia. I'll give them credit for it not being a standard 80's "the East frightens us in a capitalist way" TV show plot, but Castillo is like. A samurai? Who learned how to Samurai in... Thailand. His Thai wife and her new husband and the drug lord who brought them here all seem to have Chinese names, and I feel like somehow this is all supposed to be related to the Vietnam war. Also I'm pretty sure none of the actors in this episode are Thai. I... okay, Miami Vice. Not your best look.
The episode opens on what is apparently supposed to be a flashback to Thailand (but is definitely just Miami) set to Catch the Wind, but not the Donovan version. Castillo is in a speedo and Joan Chen is wet. It's extremely unclear that it's a flashback.
Crockett and Tubbs show up at Castillo's house and Tubbs examines his statue. Castillo explains what's going on and. And. And I'm gonna get into some Old Skool Fandom(TM) heresy here, but: I do not understand Castillo/Crockett when Castillo/Tubbs is right there. Sonny asks about how they can help transactionally ("you've done stuff for us before, we should do stuff for you"): Rico switches to Spanish and asks for Martin to let them in. Tubbs spends the whole episode with his eyes glued to Castillo, and is the one who notices when something is wrong first every time. Sonny barks at Castillo's enemies; Rico waits beside him, gently and persistently trying to get him to open up. Rico drives this whole episode, with Castillo sitting shotgun-- poor Sonny is relegated to the back. Tubbs is 100% ready for this to be Scary Boss Gets Tender With His One Employee Who Gives Him Space to Be Vulnerable and Sonny is still stuck on "the US government is corrupt sometimes."
Castillo tells Sonny and Rico to "call next time" before they show up at his house; they laugh as if he is making a joke. I do not think he is making a joke.
John Santucci is here as a corrupt official and he talks openly about how basically he's in charge of the flow of opium into poor urban communities in the US, and Sonny gets his 10-mile predator stare on. After Dale (Santucci) leaves, Crockett and Tubbs directly confirm with Castillo: so he's an American federal agent who is doing drug crime for profit? Also Miami Vice was just about speedboats and shoulderpads, right
Following up on that, when Castillo meets with Lao Li, the Thai drug lord who Dale is working with, Lao Li basically smiles and says he's not a criminal, just a capitalist, and that he's here to retire in Miami. But it's not political or anything
Of course they undercut this with Castillo saying something like "no it's not, it's Southeast Asia" when C&T say the whole drug thing is "nuts," and it's like. Really, Castillo? You think the problem is the region where economic circumstances created by the US necessitate the sale of drugs to the US? And not the US?
Peter Kwong is here as the shitty teen(?) grandson of the drug lord and there's a scene where he and another grandson literally snicker about how they're going to do SO much crime when Lao Li is like "no one do crime plz"
Castillo is positioned as having an unshakeable sense of duty and loyalty and honor, but when it comes down to it, his code of honor is not the code of honor he claims to be bound to. His sense of duty and the rules he follows are, in fact, rules he follows to the letter-- but they're personal, not societal. He tells Sonny he is a police officer and that he would not do vigilante justice, and then has an entire family and all their associates, including children, put under 24 hour police surveillance because he thinks maybe one of them might do crime eventually. He has nothing to actually get Lao Li arrested for, so he carefully manufactures a situation where Lao Li's hand is forced into killing. What Castillo says (and he doesn't generally say a lot) and does often don't match up, but he's incredibly forceful and convincing. Lao Li recognizes this-- he points out that they're much the same and that he shares great respect for him-- but it's very easy as an audience to be convinced that Castillo is significantly less morally grey than he is. He is absolutely loyal and bound to a code of honor-- but it's the code of honor of a gangster, not the law.
Lao Li definitely tries to play the "maybe this could be an enemies to lovers story wink wink" at the end there and Castillo is like "enemies is good"
My stunning wife Joan Chen is the most beautiful woman on earth and Castillo should've just been like "do you want two husbands." I think Ma Sek would've been into it. And maybe then he wouldn't have gotten involved in crime and Heart of the Night (in which both his actor and Joan Chen are replaced anyway-- Ma Sek's actor is literally replaced with James Saito who plays a different character in this fucking episode) wouldn't have happened
Did we all know John Santucci was a jewel thief before he became an actor? And that he became a thief again when apparently no one other than Michael Mann wanted to hire him? Because I did not

It is natural for humans to place importance on our ancestry and ethnic origins, its just human to want to be part of a bigger story. Last summer I visited my great-grandparents homeland and got to see the village they grew up in. Seeing family farm and talking to people who knew our family was incredibly touching and made me feel deeply connected to the country and to our history. I mean, my ancestors lived and toiled on that land for generations, long before the current borders existed. Our time in the US is recent and short in comparison. So I don´t think one can entirely dismiss the importance of heritage and ancestry to the individual.
That post didn't dismiss the importance of heritage at all. It just said that your blood alone won't make you less culture-shocked or better adapted than other people, when you have little to no contact with said culture. No one discouraged ancestors of immigrants against contacting the culture. I'm very happy about your good experience and I find it natural for locals to get excited and happy when finding out a person hails from their area.
There's a variety of reasons some nations care a lot about their grandparents' area/country and others do not. I've found that mostly people from the US feel strongly about the old place of their family. Perhaps it's the feeling people have in newer nations. I guess it was a very big thing "leaving for the US" instead of "leaving for Portugal", "leaving for Germany", "leaving for Egypt," and so USAmerican families hold the old land dearest in their hearts.
In fact, USAmericans seem to have their lineages recorded better than many other countries. (Exempt are the cultures that do ancestor worship or have similar practices) Someone does need to tell me if USAmericans think every person in the "old world" has a written lineage and we are all constantly proud of what our ancestors did, and have a deep connection to how awesome our 3rd great-aunt was.
The truth is, most of us don't give a fuck. And yes, I'm talking about 3rd-4th gen. immigrants (and sometimes those of refugees), too. People migrate through countries and areas all the time, and yet this feeling is not as strong. I will tell my experiences in a while.
But in general, I haven't seen the same strong feelings in European, Middle Eastern, and African friends. (there are always exceptions and this is my personal experience) For example, Greeks (who live in the freaking Balkans, where we know no one is a 100% anything) rarely talk about their ancestry and if they do they just say "hey my grandma was from X place" and the rest of us say "cool" and we continue with our lives.
A few might remember their family history because of a heroic ancestor or because their family had epic drama. Greek refugee families from Minor Asia tend to remember their "lost fatherlands" (dir.trans.) because the trauma of the 1920's is still palpable in the family. But this is a different flavour of longing than what I hear from USAmericans.
"It's just human to want to be part of a bigger story" you said, and I agree, but this idea doesn't seem to have the same impact on many nations.
Enter: me. <3
I've never visited the places/countries my great-grandparents and grandparents came from, and where 3 of my grandparents grew up (when they died they hadn't been to these places for 50 years minimum each). I have a famous Greek uncle, the cousin of my grandpa, whom I never met. I always saw him on TV but our lives never intersected and... well my life went on.
I don't feel a tangible connection to these people and lands. I mean why would I? I'm a complete stranger to them. Part of my line couldn't been in Egypt for 14 generations and I will never know (well unless I take a DNA test) but even if I learn it won't impact my life whatsoever. What am I supposed to do? Go to Egypt and walk through Cairo shouting the surnames my dead family members had? My family could be only in Greece for 50 generations and I still wouldn't care. 😂
On the Greek and foreign places my great-grandparents (and even half my grandparents) are from: I definitely don't consider myself part of those specific cultures and subcultures. Once I had to Google what type of language one country spoke (I knew the language name cause..geography). I couldn't even imagine myself living there without serious social adjustments. It would be nice to visit and learn stuff about the local culture, for sure, but I would feel like a tourist still.
Two weeks ago I saw a woman from the village of my great grandma in the market. We exchanged a few "ah ok you're also from there, cool!" And that was the end of it. What else are we supposed to say? There was no ✨ deeper connection ✨ or something. Why would I care about their opinions on family members from 100 yrs ago - only in case they remembered them - whom I never met and I don't know if they'd like me?
(Funny story, a Greek friend of mine thought her grandma was from Austria and it turns out she was from... Thrace 😂 She just was in Austria for work for a couple of years. This didn't impact her interaction with her grandma at all 😂 I don't know how but it was a very short conversation because we just didn't care much)
Also last year I commissioned a traditional clothing piece in a village very close to my grandpa's village in Greece and not only I didn't know the terminologies for that village but also for my grandpa's village. The complete stranger on the phone had to tell me that stuff and explain to me the importance of each piece and how the villages separated themselves through clothing. (I also accidentally offended him with how I called a thing). Sure I can imagine my grandpa living there, but things have changed there since the 1930s. Houses, markets, roads, these are not the same things he saw when he was there.
My dad just shrugged when he saw how the village (in another country) my other grandpa is from today. I didn't feel a magic spark either tbh. I deeefinitely don't know shit about the place. We have more of a connection with the old refugee families in our area than people from that village.
Blood alone won't familiarise me with these cultures and subcultures. I have to go through the learning process like every other foreigner. A Chinese immigrant (to name a place from far away) living in these cultures for a decade now has a better understanding and connection to them than I do today. It would be nice if someone from these places remembered my family but I don't think they do. It comes off as desperate - in my case - to say "Remember this family who lived here a hundred years ago?" What is the average person supposed to know 😂 I don't even know the old families in my own hometown. I know some surnames, alright, but people personally? naah..
Ofc sometimes people remember their diaspora relatives and they keep in touch, so when you go to that country you have still a "root" there to familiarize you with the current culture.
My family is not the golden standard but I gave examples to demonstrate how people can view ancestry.
I don't disregard the strong feelings about the place of origin. I don't think it's a negative thing to want to find out what happened in your family. But locals can get uneasy when someone from a family that hasn't stepped foot in this land for 3 generations comes around, and think they will fit right in. The locals can tell the cultural difference, even if they remain silent. One example for Greeks is... the Bachelor show - of all places - and for Italy one episode from the series White Lotus presented this situation accurately.
That doesn't mean locals don't feel happiness or affection for that person. I know I'd be happy if, after 3-4 generations I saw my diaspora cousins up close and we talked about Greek stuff. It would just be a cringe if they pretended we didn't have any cultural differences and that Greece is today exactly how their grandparents left it. I guess most people just ask for a reality check + empathy with the locals when someone comes from abroad.
Guys, if you are not from a recently-founded country what are your experiences with this?

On Writing: History and the Fantastic
I love fantasy and SF worlds, where weirdness abounds and there’s a new monster or alien around every labyrinth corner. But I favor grounding the fantastic in as much history, science, and biology as you can handle. It adds depth and backstory to your world, and there are plenty of readers out there hungry not just for entertainment, but for information. When they read a story, they want to learn something.
For me, learning the history of Northeast Asia started with Blockbuster and Samurai X.
Note, prior to that I’d seen some anime; Sailor Moon, Monster Rancher, a few others. But they were all dubs on TV, and I had no idea they were anything beyond “new cartoons”.
(The internet was not something I could get easy access to at the time. Or I’d have found out otherwise.)
Samurai X, though - that was something completely different. The animation was beautiful, the swordfights like nothing I had seen before, and the apparent historical details (samurai and people in late 19th century uniforms, really?) were intriguing enough that I wanted to see if they were anything close to real. And so started my poking into manga (Rurouni Kenshin first, others later) and early modern Japan.
(Blockbuster is also how I got to see Gundam Wing, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. I miss that store.)
Finding out that the Bakumatsu was real, not an invention of the writer, and samurai had indeed been running around killing each other with swords (and guns) about the same time as the American Civl War was... well. World-shaking isn’t exactly accurate. But it certainly shook up my view of history.
I also admit to a deep sympathy with anyone who wants to tell the rest of the world, “get off my lawn and stop bothering me”. In the long term it doesn’t work, other humans being first-class botherers, especially if they think you might be weaker than they are. But the impulse is real, and relatable.
This led to a lot of digging. A lot, and probably pulling out every book in nearby libraries related to that place and time.
Eventually this led to the MDZS animation, and then various c-dramas and k-dramas. Unfortunately library books on Ming, Yuan, Qing, Goryeo and Joseon are... locally nonexistent. But between internet niche articles and JSTOR, I can keep digging and filling in the gaps as I get one book at a time. Because this part of the past is a foreign world, and makes everything you thought familiar take on a new light. With that you reconsider your own history, how place makes a difference, and how the past leaves ghosts of customs, foods, attitudes, and fears in its wake.
The past was different. But often it’s presented as “more of the same, people just didn’t know as much”... unless you look at the past in a foreign land, where historians are more willing to focus on “this is how it was, wasn’t it weird?”
But humans are humans. If you can see how weird that past over there was, you know your own must be equally weird. And then you can start finding the cracks and oddities that were glossed over in the history “everyone knows”.
Here’s a tame example. Cattle drives and cowboys, the quintessential image of the Old West. Except prior to the Civil War, cattle drives were a major thing in the Southeast, stock being driven to the railheads for points north. Meaning after the war a lot of Southern drovers headed west away from Reconstruction and picked up their old job in a new place. Sometimes bringing their old grudges and a fair amount of PTSD with them
(Yes, the Civil War had PTSD. They called it “heatstroke”. It was considered serious and sufficient explanation for rare lethal shooting sprees years or decades later.)
Knowing all this, you can see that while the character of Nathan Algren in The Last Samurai may not be a historical person, he is a very historically plausible character. And that makes the story so much better.
Steal from the best. Give your worlds reality. Your stories will last with the reader, long after they close the book.

[id: A black and white comic panel featuring several people talking.
Man 1: Did you hear that?! The Beetle must have beat him to death! That makes him guilty of manslaughter. Now the Beetle's a criminal!
Woman: That's right! He has no legal authority to chase criminals!
Man 2: He'll have to be brought in to stand trial...! It will serve him right...! That masked showoff! /end id]
[id: Two black and white comic panels showing Ted Kord and his girlfriend Tracey in his lab talking. A tv plays in the background. Tracey is alarmed while Ted looks at his hands with a guilty and thoughtful expression.
Tracey: Ted! It can't be true! You didn't...! Ted: He died after our fight, Tracey, what else could have caused it but my fists?!
Tracey: Now what happens to you and the Beetle? Ted: It's too early to say! Even though Fend was a killer, my aim was to catch him, not to be his executioner! Maybe I don't have the legal right to fight crime and no one could legally make me catch a murderer, I took the risks of success and failure on my own! /end id]
[id: Two black and white comic panels. The scene is in a police station. In the foreground Ted Kord is being led away by a police officer while a woman complains to a cop at a bend in the background.
Woman: The Blue Beetle is no more than a common killer! There's no difference! What's being done about him! Ted (thinking): Well, there is a difference! Fend and his kind are a threat to everyone in a society. Anyone could wind up as their victims. The Beetle is a threat only to those who have already violated other people's rights, the criminals! The innocent have no reason to fear me and could never wind up as my victims.
Ted (thinking): So, if I must, I'll operate with the outlaw brand on me and keep working against those who prey on others. It would only be the Fends of society who would profit if I quit being the Blue Beetle! I'll just have to take the added risks! /end id]
Charlton Portfolio (1974)
Ted... you killed two cultists in Asia on purpose, got a dude pretending to be Dan killed, and sunk a submarine full of foreign soldiers and none of those deaths had you having a crisis like this...
Like in this case it was revealed that Ted wasn't the cause of the dude's death but rather caused by the invisibility suit he was using. I do like Ted's resolution when he did think he killed the man eventually going 'I'm still gonna be Blue Beetle and fight bad guys, the law after me or not'.
Still just... was it the proximity of having beaten the man with his own hands that caused Ted's crisis here when the other deaths were a bit more hands off?
Also I still love how everyone forgets that superheroes are criminals by default b/c vigilantism is a crime.

Argonautica
Poem by Apollonius of Rhodes
The Argonautica is a Greek epic poem written by Apollonius Rhodius in the 3rd century BC. The only surviving Hellenistic epic, the Argonautica tells the myth of the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from remote Colchis
Author: Apollonius of Rhodes
Adaptations: Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Hercules (1958), Jason, Argonautika
The Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece is one of the oldest myths of a hero's quest. It is a classic story of betrayal and vengeance and like many Greek myths has a tragic ending. It begins when Jason's Uncle Pelias kills Jason's father, the Greek King of Iolkos, and takes his throne. Jason's mother brings him to Cheiron, a centaur (half man, half horse) who hides him away and raises him on the Mountain of Pelion.
Jason on an antique fresco from Pompeii
Jason was an ancient Greekmythological hero and leader of the Argonauts, whose quest for the Golden Fleece featured in Greek literature. Jason appeared in various literary works in the classical world of Greece and Rome, including the epic poem Argonautica and the tragedy Medea. In the modern world, Jason has emerged as a character in various adaptations of his myths, such as the 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts and the 2000 TV miniseries of the same name.
Gathering of the Argonauts, Attic red-figure krater, 460–450 BC, Louvre (G 341).
The Argonauts were a band of heroes in Greek mythology
When Jason turns 20, he journeys to see Pelias to reclaim his throne.
At a nearby river, Hera the Queen of the Gods approaches him disguised as an old woman. While carrying her across the river he loses a sandal and arrives at court wearing only one.
Pelias, king of Iolcos, stops on the steps of a temple as he recognises young Jason by his missing sandal; Roman fresco from Pompeii, 20-25 AD.
Pelias is nervous when he sees Jason missing a sandal, for an oracle has prophesied that a man wearing only one sandal shall usurp his throne.
Jason demands the return of his rightful throne. Pelias replies that Jason should first accomplish a difficult task to prove his worth. The task is for Jason to retrieve the Golden Fleece, kept beyond the edge of the known world in a land called Colchis (modern-day Georgia in Southwest Asia).
The story of the fleece is an interesting tale in itself. Zeus, the King of the Gods, had given a golden ram to Jason's ancestor Phrixus. Phrixus later flew on the golden ram from Greece to Colchis, whose king was Aietes, the son of Helios the Sun God. Aietes sacrificed the ram and hung the fleece in a sacred grove guarded by a dragon, as an oracle had foretold that Aietes would lose his kingdom if he lost the fleece.
Determined to reclaim his throne, Jason agrees to retrieve the Golden Fleece. Jason assembles a team of great heroes for his crew and they sail aboard the Argo. The first stop of the Argonauts is the Greek Isle of Lemnos, populated only by women. Unknown to Jason and his crew, the women have murdered their husbands.
The women had neglected their worship of Aphrodite, and as a punishment the goddess made the women so foul in stench that their husbands could not bear to be near them. The men then took concubines from the Thracian mainland opposite, and the spurned women, angry at Aphrodite, killed all the male inhabitants while they slept.
Concubinage is an interpersonal and sexual relationship between two people in which the couple does not want, or cannot, enter into a full marriage
The Argonauts fare much better though; in fact the women use the occasion as an opportunity to repopulate the island.
During the visit of the Argonauts the women mingled with the men creating a new "race" called Minyae. Jason fathered twins with the queen. Heracles pressured them to leave as he was disgusted by the antics of the Argonauts. He had not taken part, which is truly unusual considering the numerous affairs he had with other women
After many more adventures, the Argo passes Constantinople, heading for the Straits of Bosphorus. The Straits of Bosphorus are a narrow passageway of water between the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea. To the ancient Greeks, this was the edge of the known world. The Straits are extremely dangerous due to the currents created by the flow of water from the Black Sea. The ancient Greeks believed that clashing rocks guarded the straits and that the rocks would close together and smash any ship sailing through. Jason had been told by a blind prophet he assisted how to fool the rocks. He was to send a bird ahead of him. The rocks would crash in on it and then reopen, at which point he could successfully sail through.
Jason and the Argonauts Arriving at Colchis, by Charles de La Fosse. This painting is located in the Château de Versailles.
When Jason finally arrives in Colchis he asks King Aietes to return the golden fleece to him as it belonged to his ancestor. Reluctant, the king suggests yet another series of challenges to Jason. He must yoke fire-breathing bulls, plough and sow a field with dragons' teeth and then overcome the warriors who will rise from the furrows. Aietes is confident the tasks are impossible but unbeknownst to the king, his daughter Medea has taken a liking to Jason. She offers to assist Jason if he will marry her. He agrees. Medea is a powerful sorceress and Jason is successful.
Medea is known in most stories as a sorceress, but also as a witch, and is often depicted as a priestess of the goddess Hecate.

Treachery of Jason
Jason and Medea return to Greece where Jason claims his father's throne, but their success is short-lived. Uncomfortable with Medea's magic, the locals drive Medea and Jason out of Iolkos. They go into exile in Corinth where the king offers Jason his daughter in marriage. He agrees and so violates his vow to the gods to be true only to Medea. Furious, Medea kills the woman, kills Medea and Jason's children and then ascends to Mount Olympus where she eventually marries Achilles.
Medea on her golden chariot, by Germán Hernández Amores
The play depicts Medea, who, jealous of her husband Jason's second marriage to Glauce, decides to kill her rival and her own children to take revenge on Jason, and flees with their corpses in Helios' chariot to the sacred forest of Hera, in Athens
As a result of breaking his vow to love Medea forever, Jason lost his favor with Hera and died lonely and unhappy. He was asleep under the stern of the rotting Argo when it fell on him, killing him instantly

In ancient Greek religion, Hera is the goddess of marriage, women and family, and the protector of women during childbirth
The Argo (c. 1500–1530), painting by Lorenzo Costa
In Greek mythology the Argo was a ship built with the help of the gods that Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece.
Jason goes back to Iolkos where his boat the Argo is on display. One day, while he sits next to the boat weeping, the decaying beam of his ship the Argo falls off and hits him on the head, killing him outright.

Swynrpwrimo Task #9: SwynRPVision
Create your own TV show, book, video game, piece of media, etc. that would exist in the SwynRPuniverse which does not exist in ours. Write a description, make a graphic, write a script or do whatever you want.
[tracker]
THIS TOOK ME FOUR DAYS
It's a K-pop survival competition show! Follow the journey of trainee Bae Na-young (Mu-yeol Bae's niece and Nemo Bae's cousin!) as she competes to join the debut group. Read to the end to find out the girl group's name!
(This show might eventually be canon, but not yet lol)
Name: Shining Girl (Mnet)
Concept: To see who will shine the most, and leave an impact in the industry as South Korea's first all-fairy girl group made up of fairies from around the world.
Number of Contestants: 84 contestants (most are from Korea but some are from abroad - China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Sweden, Mongolia, Argentina -- most not from Asia are overseas Koreans but there's one Chinese-Scottish girl)
Judges/Mentors:
Vocal: Yunjin (Le Sserafim), Bangchan (Stray Kids), Solar (Mamamoo)
Rap: So-yeon (G-IDLE), Jessi, Han (Stray Kids)
Perfomance/Dance: Ten (NCT/WayV), Sung Hanbin (Zerobaseone), Xiaoting (Kep1er)
MC: Chuu (soloist)
Signal Song: Shine (an energetic song that serves as the theme song of the show, think Pick Me from Produce 101 or Here I Am from Boys Planet)
Debut: 12 contestants (permanent group)
Voting: Viewers vote for 12 girls at first, then as they get eliminated it goes down to 10, 6, 4, and then for the final round, 1 girl
01 ENTRY PERFORMANCE
In this performance, we will see each of the girls performing a song off their choice either with a group or they can perform solo. They perform in front of the judges and all of the other girls. Think like the Boys Planet star level test or the Produce series entry tests. Then the Judges rank the girls. They are all given a Grade either A, B, C, or D.
In episode 1, we are first introduced to trainee Bae Na-young as she paces the floor backstage. Another trainee walks up to her and Na-young hugs her. Na-young's voice in a voiceover explains that "Hye-rin unnie* and I used to train at the same company. It's been two years since we got to train together. I hope we debut together through Shining Girl."
*unnie is a word that Korean girls use to address or talk about a female friend older than them
The scene changes to Na-young on stage and the camera flits briefly to Hye-rin nervously watching her. It goes silent. And then, the scene shows mentor Yunjin's head just snap up, followed by multiple reaction shots of the other trainees and the mentors. Why?
Because this is the song that played. Na-young chose the bold move to perform a Le Sserafim song in front of Yunjin, a Le Sserafim member, and perform it alone with nobody to help her sing, rap, and dance.
Na-young executes the performance well, earning praise from Bangchan for her stable vocals. Everyone looks at Yunjin. She is silent a long moment before saying "thank you for letting me watch someone else perform this song" and praising her captivating stage presence.
However, Xiaoting comments that her dancing feels a bit like she's checking off boxes, that she doesn't feel like she really enjoys it. "It's technically perfect, but I don't see Na-young."
Ultimately, Na-young earns an A-grade.
However, many viewers thought Na-young was brazen for performing Yunjin's song in front of her and she got a lot of online hate. She ranked only 44th in the first round of online voting.
02 SONG BATTLE
The girls will first split into 12 teams of 7. 1st-12th Rank will be team captains. 1st place will choose her team first, then it goes on like that. Then they will choose a song to battle with the other group of 7 performing. So there is an A team and a B team for each song. The choices are as follows:
Love Me Like This (NMIXX)
Queencard (G-IDLE)
Unnatural (WJSN)
Dalla Dalla (Itzy)
Spicy (aespa)
Sugar Rush Ride (TXT)
Then a live audience will choose the winning performance for each concept. The judges will choose an all-around individual winner between each battle, and both the winning group and the judges pick for individual trainee will receive a points benefit for the next round of voting. Then, the team that scored overall first place will will an additional benefit and will perform on M-Countdown.
Despite coming in 37th in the first televote, Na-young is chosen first by the 5th-ranked girl, shocking a lot of people. The girl, the Chinese-Scottish trainee named Sophie Chen, said in a talking head that the show's editors put in: "I'm choosing my team based on talent because I'm sure once we show you this stage we will be popular as well as talented."
The twelve team captains then have to compete in a race to see which order they get to pick their songs in. Sophie wins third place and confidently announces that her group will be doing Queencard after the first slots for Dalla Dalla and Love Me Like This are taken first.
Na-young is secretly not thrilled, since she got online hate for performing Yunjin's song, now she'd be doing a rap mentor's song. But fine!
The girls must elect their leaders for each group. Na-young is nominated leader by Sophie who, although she built the team, doesn’t want the position. She says she feels “lacking” and she doesn’t want the girls to struggle because of her. Nobody else volunteers so despite being unpopular in the original rankings, Na-young is leader.
In a talking head, Na-young says "after I was elected leader, I realized-- everyone else in my group was a foreigner. We're like the UN."
Their group consists of Na-young (an animal talent fairy from Korea), Sophie (a Chinese-Scottish storytelling-talent fairy), Solongo (a Mongolian healing-talent fairy), Chenda (a Cambodian water-talent fairy), Lalita (a Thai animal-talent fairy), Aubrey (a Korean-American fast-flying talent fairy), and Noriko (a Japanese water-talent fairy).
In the midterm mentors' evaluation, Na-young is again told that her dancing is technically perfect but she doesn't look like she's having fun. In the final edit of the episode the broadcasted on TV, Na-young is seen relentlessly practicing the choreography so that it become automatic and she can just focus on her facial expressions, energy, and having fun.
She's practicing in the hallway of the dorms late into the night, like many other girls.
While practicing, she stops mid-dance-move. She overhears Chenda and Noriko struggling with their lines. In the midterm evaluation, their pronunciation was critiqued quite harshly. The girls all spoke Korean to some degree, as most of them had been living in Korea and training for at least a year. However, Chenda and Noriko had both just arrived in Korea less than six months ago. She walks over to them to help with their pronunciation and this is included in the final cut of the episode.
On the day of the performance, their team, (UN + I <3) wins over the other team performing Queencard, securing the benefit. Noriko wins first place out of all 14 of the girls who performed Queencard, thus winning an additional benefit. In her thank you message, she thanked Na-young for helping her with her Korean.
This endeared Na-young, previously seen as annoying and over-confident, to some of the viewing audience. At the first elimination, it was announced that only 45 out of 84 girls would move on to the next round.
Na-young's team all looked at her, who had ranked in 44th place after the entry level audition episodes aired, which meant that she was in danger of elimination.
However! Between the benefit for winning the battle round and audiences growing to like her, she jumped from 44th place to 26th. So Na-young moves on to the next round.
03 Concept Battle Round
The contestants will choose a concept and one of two songs in that concept.
The girls split up into 4 groups of 8, 1 group of 7, and 1 group of 6. The songs are put on big signs on the wall of a large room along with the number of girls per song. The girls choose their songs one by one starting from the lowest ranked person to the first ranked person. When songs fill up, higher ranked girls can push the lower ranked girls out and they have to find an open slot-- but they cannot push someone out, so they must choose whatever song is available.
The concepts and songs are as follows:
Cute: Mr. Chu (Apink) or Very Very Very (I.O.I)
Dark: Given-Taken (Enhypen) or Chase Me (Dreamcatcher)
Girl Crush: Hobgoblin (CLC) or Pink Venom (BLACKPINK)
When it's Na-young's turn, she stands in front of the songs a long moment before walking over to Mr. Chu. The camera pans to the shocked faces of some of the other girls, and the editors slide in a talking head of an interview with Na-young.
"Ah, so..." Na-young says. "I wanted to show the cute side of myself in this challenge. I think people might think I only like powerful concepts and that's not true. I have a lot of aegyo!"
However, the girl in position 8 pushes her out of Mr. Chu when it's her turn because Mr. Chu had filled up. Na-young frowned, walking back to see what songs still had slots, and went to stand with the Chase Me group.
There was only one slot left total when the PO1 girl had to choose. It was take a slot in Hobgoblin, or, push a girl out of another song and make them take it. The girl, a healing-talent fairy from Busan named Im Yeo-reum, walked up to Chase Me and looked right at Na-young, before apologizing and tapping another girl (Noriko who worked with Na-young last round) on the shoulder to send her to Hobgoblin.
The girls select a leader, and Na-young is one of three girls nominated but she immediately bows out. She says she wants to give the other girls nominated an opportunity but silently she knows it isn't good to be perceived as bossy and always trying to take charge and she doesn't want to be evil edited in the final cut for TV. KT Kim, a Korean-New Zealander fire-talent fairy, is chosen as leader.
Na-young picks up the choreography for Chase Me quickly and the response is positive in the midterm evaluations. Sung Hanbin and Xiaoting say that they can actually see Na-young having fun while dancing. Ten reminds her though that "now that you're having fun while dancing, remember the emotions you need to convey with this specific concept." Na-young smiles and nods at the minor constructive critique.
Back in the dorms, Na-young and Noriko, who share a room with a few other girls, are talking. Noriko expresses worries over getting her lines down for Hobgoblin, as the lines she has are faster-paced than she's confident with. Na-young takes time to help Noriko, who is not her teammate this time around, with her Korean. This is broadcasted, along with a brief #throwback clip to the last round where they practiced Noriko's Korean together, and a talking head of Noriko spliced in saying;
"Na-young unnie helps me with my Korean a lot. I'm so thankful to her, I was like, why is she helping me? We aren't a team this time...but she's still helping me. I really want to debut with her."
Across the screen in Korean and in English (those of you who watch K-pop survival shows know how accurate this is lmao) as the girls decide to go to bed for the night, appear the words "Na-young unnie...let's debut together. Fighting!"
The scene cuts to all of the girls backstage in their outfits for the show. The live audience will pick the winner of each battle like last round and this time they'll also vote for the girl they think did best in each song. The top-voted girls wins an additional benefit. The judges will also pick a judges' pick girl to award an additional benefit from each battle. Additionally, the top-voted team overall will perform on MCountdown (of the Korean music shows).
Na-young's team wins their battle and Im Yeo-reum is ranked 1st by the audience, as the girls expected since she was PO1 overall. However! The mentors voted Na-young as the 'dark concept' battle winner.
Sung Hanbin said on the microphone that "we were really impressed with how much you've grown in your dancing since the entry evaluation. You took Ten's midterm critique and showed us a great stage." Na-young thanked them and promised to show them even better stages in the future.
In the elimination episode it is announced that of the 45 girls left, 15 would be eliminated. Na-young is worried, as she's currently 26th place so she can only fall 4 slots maximum.
In true survival show fashion, they start with 29th place and go up to 13th place (the last place before the debut group lineup slots), and then 12th-3rd, then 30th place, then 1st and 2nd place. Na-young gets increasingly nervous when it approaches time for Chuu to announce 26th place. When Na-young isn't called, she looks down at her feet for a while.
When girls from her first battle group and her Chase Me group are revealed safe, Na-young claps extra hard for them but smiles and claps for every girl revealed safe regardless. 13th place is called. It's not Na-young. She figures then that she's either 30th place or is eliminated.
Chuu announces 11th place by saying "11th place is an animal-talent fairy from Korea..." Na-young's eyes pop wide open, but so do the eyes of two other girls who were also animal-talents from Korea -- one girl who had been ranked 32nd last round, and one who had been 17th last round.
"...Bae Na-young!"
Na-young is floored that she jumped from 26th place to 11th place. When she's given the mic, she tries to talk but starts crying before she pulls it together to thank everyone for voting for her and asking them to continue letting her show them amazing stages.
04 BOY GROUP BATTLE
The remaining contestants will head on into the boy group battle. 5 teams of 6 girls. The songs are:
Blue Hour (TXT)
LALALALA (Stray Kids)
Pretty U (Seventeen)
Beautiful Liar (Monsta X)
Dynamite (BTS)
The teams must select their songs this way --- first, the girls get into their teams of 6 BEFORE they know what the songs even are. Then, they must go on a scavenger hunt for 3 items. The first group to find all three then go to the room where Chuu is and she shows them the song choices and they pick their song, and so on and so forth.
This presents challenges for some teams because, having selected their teams being blind to the songs, they may end up with a poorly combined team for the song they have to perform.
Na-young was quickly chosen as a teammate by the PO1 girl, Im Yeo-reum, much to Na-young's surprise. Na-young chose Noriko and Solongo from her first group to join them and Yeo-reum calls KT Kim over. A lot of the girls wanted to join as the 6th member as the group had PO1 (Yeo-reum), PO3 (KT), PO12 (Noriko), PO11 (Na-young), and PO16 (Solongo), and between them they already had strong singers, rappers, and dancers. Looking at the girls not yet teamed up, Yeo-reum whispered to Na-young and Na-young nodded.
"Sophie, come join us!" Yeo-reum said. Sophie, who was Na-young's teammate for Queencard, had ranked 30th and just barely made it. However she was incredibly strong as a dancer, singer and rapper, a real all-arounder.
The girls completed their scavenger hunt first and had a free pick of all song choices.
Na-young wanted to do Blue Hour, on her "I wanna be cute" agenda, and the song is easier to perform choreo-wise than Pretty U which was also a cute song. Yeo-reum, the group's leader, argued that they were getting close to the final and should take a risk to show what they're capable of and suggested either Pretty U or Beautiful Liar.
Ultimately, they agreed on Beautiful Liar.
Na-young was tasked with writing her own raps as she was one of the two in charge of the rap parts, and she helped Sophie write the Korean lyrics of her raps too.
By this round, doing the choreo and having fun while doing it came easily to her, yay!
The winning team, girl, and judges' pick would receive benefits once again.
The Beautiful Liar team wins first place overall, and Im Yeo-reum wins first place in the on-site voting out of all 30 girls.
In the elimination episode, it is announced that 10 girls would be eliminated, meaning 20 girls will go into the final round.
Sophie is called out as PO17 having risen from 30th place.
Na-young expects to have dropped, and when it gets to PO3 and her name has yet to be called, she expects she's either 20th place or eliminated. Chuu calls out "Im Yeo-reum and Bae Na-young, step forward."
Na-young is speechless as being either PO1 or PO2 -- she's announced as, for this round at least, second place!
05 ARTIST BATTLE
The girls are divided into 4 groups of 5 and are given original songs! The girls hear 15 second clips and then record PR videos for the Mnet site making their case to assign them to the song they want to be assigned to. And then you, the Shining Girl viewers, vote and choose which song the girls do!
These are the vibes of the 4 songs:
A retro-inspired song called Quiet! about wanting your heart to stop beating so loudly in front of your crush because you're embarrassed. Soundwise, think Oh! My Mistake by April
A song that just sounds sexy called Tap Tap, think Something by Girl's Day
A sunshiney song called My Boy -- it's giving Me Gustas Tu by GFRIEND vibes
A song exuding confidence called Star Girl it's giving Next Level by aespa or Trouble by EVNNE
In her video, Na-young campaigns to be assigned to Quiet! as she thinks it can show her cute side-- once again on her "let Na-young be cute!" agenda.
Ultimately, she's assigned to My Boy and secures the main vocalist position.
The winning team, top-voted girl, and judges' pick girl all receive benefits.
Na-young's team wins first place over all and Na-young is the top-voted girl on-site. Sophie is the judges pick -- she was on team Star Girl.
06 FINAL
For the final, the votes from the artist battle round are included. However, the girls are split into two groups of 10 and learn two other brand new songs! They perform these in the final live broadcasted show, and viewers cast their last minute votes --- however, they can only pick one girl, the dreaded Mnet survival show one-pick. Many dreams will be crushed, girls in the top 12 will suddenly fall to last place, it's a bloodbath y'all.
The songs are:
Azaleas, a sassy song like Tonight by Blackswan
QT, a fun song about a crush, sound like After LIKE by IVE
Na-young ends up in QT after the girls play a series of competitive games to determine groups and positions.
The final member announcement begins with the announcement of the group name: Primrose, and the fans are called Bumblebees.
Ultimately, Na-young is announced as PO4, debuting in Primrose. Her reaction was huge, think Park Gunwook in Boys Planet.
The final lineup is Primrose:
PO1 - Im Yeo-reum (Korea)
PO2 - KT Kim (New Zealand)
PO3 - Noriko (Japan)
PO4 - Bae Na-young (Korea) (leader)
PO5 - Solongo (Mongolia) (oldest)
PO6 - Aubrey Mo (USA)
PO7 - Han Mi-joo (Korea)
PO8 - Lalita (Thailand)
PO9 - Lucia Eun-sae Kim-Costa (Argentina)
PO10 - Lim Na-ri (Korea) (maknae, youngest)
PO11 - Sophie Chen (Scotland)
PO12 - Chenda (Cambodia)

Week 10
Online harassment = a barrier to safety and equal participation on social media
Have you seen people being mean to others online? Have you been targeted for shaming on social media because of your background? Haslop et al. (2021: 1420) define online harassment as ‘threats or other offensive unwanted behaviours targeted directly at others through new technology channels or posted online for others to see that is likely to cause them harm, unintentionally or otherwise’. Recently, many countries started to establish laws to clamp down on online harassment. For example, in Australia, people can be sentenced to terms of imprisonment of 5 to 10 years, according to what they have done (Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution n.d.). Haslop et al. (2021) report that online harassment afflicts subjects’ emotional, psychological, and physiological health, and in the worst scenario, it leads to suicide. In my home country, Japan, online harassment has gained prominence over the past few years due to the death of Hana Kimura (Yeung et al. 2022). As I mentioned in the week 4 topic (Reality TV), she committed suicide in 2020 after being severely cyberbullied on social media. Her death led to growing calls for anti-cyberbullying laws, and legislation was finally passed and enforced in October 2022.
Research conducted by Haslop et al. (2021) found that online harassment is often recognized as the ‘norm’ for young people, which results in not reporting the incidents because they do not think they got harassed. Even if they realize that they are harassed, instead of reporting, they just self-censor their posts or even decide to disengage from social media to avoid being subjected again (Haslop et al. 2021). Online harassment is a barrier to digital inclusion since it restricts online participation and digital citizenship of those who are subjected to online harassment (Haslop et al. 2021). Therefore, not only laws for online harassment but also proper governance of online platforms is required to ensure the safety and equal participation of social media.

Mangoes have been around for a long time, and their origin story is as interesting as the fruit itself. Mangoes are thought to have originated in South Asia, and there are many references to mangoes in Indian literature. The first recorded reference to mangoes is from the 5th century CE when they were mentioned in the Pali Canon, a Buddhist scripture. From India, mangoes spread to East Africa and then to Brazil, where they were introduced by Portuguese explorers. Today, mangoes are grown in many tropical countries around the world.
Mangoes are a delicious and nutritious fruit that has many health benefits. They are a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as dietary fiber. Mangoes can be eaten fresh or used in cooked dishes. They are also a popular ingredient in many desserts.
The popularity of mangoes is on the rise, and there are many reasons why mangoes are going to rule the fruity universe.
Mango’s many benefits
When it comes to fruit, there is no doubt that mangoes are one of the most delicious and nutritious options out there. But did you know that mangoes also have a host of benefits that make them a true superfood? Here are just a few of the reasons why mangoes should be at the top of your list when it comes to choosing fruit:
Mangoes are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. They are packed with vitamin C, which is essential for immunity and collagen production, as well as vitamins A, B6, and E. Mangoes also contain potassium, magnesium, and copper, which are all important for good health.
Mangoes have powerful antioxidant properties. The antioxidants in mangoes help to protect cells from damage and may even help to prevent some chronic diseases.
Mangoes can help to improve digestion. The fiber and enzymes in mangoes can help to promote healthy digestion and may even help to relieve constipation.
Mangoes may help to lower cholesterol levels. The soluble fiber in mangoes binds to cholesterol in the gut and helps to remove it from the body. This can help to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
How to pick a ripe mango
Picking a ripe mango can be tricky, but there are a few things you can look for to help you out. First, check for a nice, even color. You might see some red or green, but the fruit should be mostly yellow or orange. Second, give the mango a gentle squeeze. If it’s too soft, it’s overripe and if it’s too hard, it’s not ripe yet. You’re looking for something that gives a little bit when you press on it. Third, smell the stem end of the mango. If it smells sweet and fruity, it’s probably ripe and ready to eat!
Mangoes in pop culture
Mangoes have been making a splash in pop culture lately. From being featured in movies and TV shows to being mentioned in songs, this delicious fruit is having a moment. Here are some of the ways mangoes have been making their mark on popular culture.
In the movie “Crazy Rich Asians“, one of the characters is obsessed with mangos and even has a mango-themed room in her house.

The 18th Asian Mobile Medical Service project
Cherng Jacob Guh
March 1988
▲ Pictured: Some of the AMMS medical staff working in Manila.
Dr. Cherng Jacob Guh, a church member since 1974, has been serving as an obstetrician / gynecologist since 1982 in Taiwan, Republic of China. From August 9-16, 1987, he attended the 18th Asian Mobile Medical Service project, held this year in the Philippines. This was his third time participating in AMMS. A volunteer medical team connected to Isshin Hospital in Japan, AMMS provides free medical care to impoverished people in various countries.
I had not thought it would be possible for me to be a part of another project of the Asian Mobile Medical Service in the Philippines. But thanks to Dr. Michiko Kozaki, president of AMMS, and
Dr. Hiroshi Shiraishi, the secretary-general, I was invited to participate once again, and it proved to be one of my most memorable times of serving and sharing.
The Philippines, a nation made up of 7,083 islands, is the nearest country to Taiwan. It takes only one hour and 50 minutes to fly from Taipei to Manila. Since June of 1987, our movement in the Philippines has sponsored several projects that have been attended by Chinese members and professors from Taiwan: a 40-day workshop, a Unification Thought seminar, and the International Congress of PWPA. The Philippine members have been working very hard for the sake of the providence in all of South Asia.
The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia. Many churches can be seen in every big city and small town. God loves this country very much, but she has been tested severely in the past years. I believe that if Filipinos can unite together even amidst their suffering and trials, this country will be able to truly receive God's blessing.
A Desperate Need
This is the fourth time that AMMS has sponsored a medical service project in the Philippines, and when I went there this time, I saw that many Philippine people were still in desperate need of medical services. The situation of the poor seemed to be little changed from what I saw two years ago. Since the February 1986 revolution, the economic condition has not improved very much, in spite of a much freer political atmosphere.
There was still evidence of a big gap between the rich and the poor. We could see many men who had no work idling in the streets. Others were working, but only at primitive types of labor. We had come to this country to help fight against illness, and in our hearts was the hope that one day the rich would give to the poor and the wise would teach the ignorant, so that poverty and ignorance might not give communism a way to invade.
I was shocked when I saw the pool fishing village of Cavite, southwest c Manila. Villagers' "houses" were built only of straw and palm fibers, standing on the muddy marshes. When we were doing our medical service there many emaciated children came with sorrowful eyes and bulging bellies, flies hovering over ulcerated wounds on their heads and faces. It reminded me of scenes I had seen on TV of starving African refugees. To see such misery has been the most painful experience for me. How can people remain aloof to this suffering, like the Levite and the priest in the story of the good Samaritan (Lk 10:30-37)?
In the downtown area of the city, not very far away, there are many modern buildings and people driving fancy cars. The rich still enjoy their luxurious way of life.
It shocked me even more to see the inside of the Malacanang Palace, where former president Ferdinand Marcos and his family had lived for 20 years. It is now a national museum. Seeing the thousands of suits, shoes, and dresses in the closets, including one opulent set of king's and queen's clothing, I understood how human desire for physical things can become so overwhelming that no amount of material wealth can satisfy it.
▲ Pictured: Dr. Cherng Jacob Guh doing a minor operation on a patient in one of the temporary clinics.
True Brotherhood
So how could we help the poor people of the Philippines? They desperately needed our love and service, so we came to offer them medical help. We knew we weren't going to give them medicine only, but also love. It was because we were motivated by God's love that we could offer such unconditional service, without thinking of ourselves. Although what we could give them was very little, their appreciation was immeasurable; many times the people we treated for even minor ailments were moved to tears of gratitude. How beautiful it is when people love and express their hearts to each other like this! I understood deeply that true brotherhood goes beyond barriers of race, nationality, language, and culture.
During a four-day period, the 53 medical staff members from six countries served 5,267 patients in 15 locations all over the country. Team I went to the south -- to Cebu Island, Davao, and Bacolod; Teams II and III went to the central part of the country -- to Cavite, Bulacan, Caloocan, and a district of Manila; and Team IV went to the northeastern part of Luzon Island. Everyone worked very hard. The Team I members had to get up at 3:00 am every day for another plane ride to the next service area. I saw that Dr. Shiraishi exuded heavenly grace, even as he got skinnier and darker every day. And Mrs. Suh, a 36 Blessed Couple, always smiled warmly in spite of the incredibly hard work. Team I brought back from the south a most special famous fruit called lio-lion to share with all members at the main training center in Manila.
There was a water shortage at the training center where my team was staying: we could use running water only every other day. Sometimes we had to take a bath with only one bowl of stored water each. Some of us on the medical staff even became sick! We all worked late and slept little. Even though they were very tired, the dental technicians worked until midnight to finish making dentures for the patients they had served that day. Every evening we attended an evaluation meeting to reflect on our work and to plan better ways to accomplish the next day's service. We tried to serve the sick people as if we were their parents; thus we were constantly learning the lessons of love, Only God's love could have enabled us to practice such love, service, and sacrifice.
Support from Many People
During our stay, we felt God's love strongly through the unity of all the medical staff. We deeply appreciated the Unification Church members' care for us; they served us food as if they were serving True Parents. And one day after our work, we were entertained with many lovely songs at a congressman's house. On another day, at the Caloocan City Hall, the city band gave us an elegant, triumphant welcome with beautiful love songs.
Our Farewell Banquet on August 15 was attended by the Vice-President of the Philippines, Salvador Laurel, who gratefully acknowledged us with the words, "The Filipino people can take heart in knowing that they are under the watchful care of socially-oriented organizations that reach out to those in need of medical and dental service!"
I want to express deep appreciation to Mr. Toshinobu Murotani, the director of the Unification Church in the Philippines, to Dr. René Santos, the chairman of the Board of Advisors for AMMS, and to all the Unification Church members, the Philippine doctors, and the representatives of the government who supported us. Without their help and their organizing ability, we could have done nothing.
For the sake of God, for the sake of the security of Asia, and for the sake of the Philippines, we heartily pray that God may bless this country and every one of its people, from its most renowned to its most humble citizen.

A wide range of tactical antenna Design and Development
Today's market is flooded with antennas. It can be challenging to choose the best one, but we're here to guide you in the correct direction. You will discover the several antenna types in this blog piece, along with advice on how to choose the best one for your requirements. Additionally, we'll offer you some installation and usage pointers. So now you have the knowledge you need, whether you're looking for an antenna to watch TV or to boost your cell phone service.
Antennas are made for specific frequency ranges, therefore choosing the right kind is crucial if you want your antenna to work well. In order to help you choose the VHF Mobile Band Antenna that is suitable for you, this guide will outline its fundamentals to work as Antenna Design & Development.
The SL-520A-501 is a broadband, High Gain Antenna, providing continuous communications coverage across the spectrum of 4.4 GHz to 6.0 GHz and beyond.
Its primary use is to enhance Wi-Fi network signals in 802.11a and 802.11n modes in the Americas, and in the US U-NII bands (5.150-5.350, 5.470-5.725 and 5.725-5.825 GHz). In Europe the SL-520A-501 will support 802.11h ETSI HiperLAN/1 (5.150-5.350 GHz) and HiperLAN/2 (5.470-5.725 GHz) applications simultaneously. In Asia, the very same antenna will support High Speed Wireless Access applications at 5.150-5.250 GHz.
Future applications will include the 5.9 GHz band, C-V2X communications envisioned for the Intelligent Highway (ITS = Intelligent Transport System), and other self-driving vehicle to infrastructure and vehicle to vehicle communications.
This Directional Antenna's broadband capabilities enable simultaneous operation on all of the aforementioned services in addition to serving as a Directional Antenna in C-Band Telemetry and Video applications. In order to improve the downlink video streams of remote control (RC) planes and UAVs (drones), boats, cars, and robots, for instance, or to link wireless security devices, such as cameras, it can be utilized as a portable, high gain (+9 dBil), search C-Band antenna. Additionally, it can be utilized as a point-to-point 5 GHz antenna enabling quick to link ranges.
VHF and UHF antennas for satellite, mobile, and tactical applications have been the main focus of antennas.us up until this point. Although we want to continue concentrating on these areas, we are also adding other solutions including LNAs, Filters, and Diplexers. In the upcoming years, we intend to keep increasing the range of our product offering.
