All The Books I Read In 2020

Here she is! The full list of books I read in 2020. My goal was to read 52 books again this year, but once lockdown started I upped it to 100, and I ultimately surpassed even that goal!! I think reading is so important for my personal growth and mental health, so the last two years I have made reading a big priority in my life, and it is the best choice I could have made. This year especially, I found reading to be such a comfort and such a great tool for keeping the quarantine blues at bay. Here’s to all the books I read in 2020, and all the books I will read in 2021!

HALF SIBLING;

The first eleven or so years of Aiden’s life were shit. Mostly because of his dad who thankfully dropped off the face of the planet. He was abusive and Aiden’s never cared to look or find out what happened with him. He hopes he’s buried in a ditch somewhere really. But I’m a straight sucker for cliche long lost siblings plots. This could either be an equally broken kid in search of family or someone completely opposite ( say a perfectly normal, possibly enviable kid who his dad got his shit together for ) or even someone born when their idiot dad was still in Aiden’s life. They could bump into each other and we can slow burn it out or they could come looking for him ready to blow with the news or something in between. Anything. Just give it to me...

LIKE FAMILY;

After spending more than half his life taking care of a family, bein out here all alone can kinda crush his soul at times. So give him some people to fuss over and annoy the fuck out of with his unsolicited advice, protection and dumb shit. Bonus points if they actually ask for it sometimes and you know, pretend he isn’t an ass.

CONFIDANT;

As mentioned before, his childhood? Not so great. More often than not he doesn’t let it handicap him. He holds himself confidently enough most wouldn’t even question it. But there are times it eats at him. Times he can’t sleep or when the smell of a cigarette sends him into a full blown panic attack. The latter is rarer than the first, but it happens. He’s secretive about anything that isn’t your typical surface level conversation / interactions so he could use someone he turns to when he’s feeling less than himself. Could start as a stranger that he stumbles into or a friend he’s been getting closer too. Maybe one of each. Just be prepared for him to call in the middle of the night with some shitty excuse to talk or to find a handwritten note stuck to their door/window/whatever. He likely won’t mention it after, aside from a curt thank you, but yeah. He’ll appreciate it and his door will always be open for them if they need it.

FAN;

He’s a published author and a good one. His writing can be dark and gritty. It’s very blunt and he doesn’t shy away from things of graphic nature. He’s only got one book under his belt and it’s under a penn name, but....he’s pretty popular in a few crowds. He’s got a blog he writes for of just everyday observations, poems, etc. Dayton’s a hot bed of inspiration and though he never mentions it by name or alludes to anyone by their actual name, it’d be fun if someone made the connect that he’s in town. He’ll talk about being a writer, but never talks about his actual work so yeah it could be a nice back and forth of cat and mouse.

UNREQUITED CRUSH; filled by laurel mitchell

This person would be someone Aiden just-- he can’t get enough of. They could be fwbs he caught feelings for or a complete and utter stranger. They’re just always unavailable and probably not right for him at all. Something about them though triggers something in him that makes him wanna be there. It doesn’t make sense to him either, which is frustrating and intoxicating all at once.

ONE NIGHT STAND; ( male )

While Aiden considers himself pansexual, it’s not something that comes up often. Maybe it’s because while providing for his family he did some more...unsavory things that turned him off from his curiosity for a while. Again, not something he talks about, but here in Dayton, he’s living life as baggage free as possible. So no doubt he would have scouted someone out at least once. Just to get back on the horse, so to speak. We can figure out things from there, but yeah, pretty basic.

FUCK THAT GUY ( OR GIRL );

So this person embodies everything Aiden wished he could’ve hand growing up. Good loving family. An full education. Great job. And absolutely no real responsibility. And he HATES them. Just the mere mention of them pisses him off. Of course, he has no idea if the entitled prick has all those things going for them. They could be just as broken and shitty as he is. But Aiden doesn’t see it. They could be the sweetest person on earth / adore Aiden to death and he’s just-- he’s blinded by his own assumptions and yeah, it makes him act out of character on more than one occasion. Which you know should be fun to play.

my first choice was virginia lewis, because through her journey I felt lot, like “Wow, that’s something I do/deal with too”. but also rose tyler, especially season one rose, how she was like stuck in that loop in the first episode and basically her whole nature felt like that to me. but others say that I’m like ella lopez and that’s just so not true at all.

R: best book to film adaptation, in your opinion?

romeo + juliet (1996) and in this case I actually read the book too and I really liked the way they adapted the story to a more modern world, but kept the original shakespearean dialogue

the elite, the second book from the selection series. that’s my favorite from the three book, which is very, very weird, because most people like the first and the last the most. but for some reason I don’t. I remember at first I read that book in like five hours, and I re-read it a few times already and I would definitely do that again.

Art Movements is a weekly collection of news, developments, and stirrings in the art world.

As anticipated, President Trump’s proposed 2018 federal budget calls for the complete elimination of the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities (NEA and NEH). The budget also proposes the elimination of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The College Art Association published an “Arts and Humanities Advocacy Toolkit” in response to the anticipated budget earlier this month.

LD50 Gallery, the London art space accused of supporting a racist, far-right agenda, has been evicted from its premises according to a statement by the Shut Down LD50 Campaign.

The Western Cape High Court found Zwelethu Mthethwa guilty of the murder of sex worker Nokuphila Kumalo. The artist is to be sentenced on March 29.

Art dealer Archie Parker plans to sell “Two Hacks,” a painting recently attributed to George Stubbs at the British Antique Dealers Association fair in London. The work, which was thought to be a copy after the artist, was deaccessioned by the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. In a blog post, art historian Bendor Grosvenor described its sale as “one of the biggest deaccessioning blunders of modern times.” Parker purchased the work at Christie’s for a hammer price of $175,000.

Olafur Eliasson, “Little Sun Diamond” (2017)

Olafur Eliasson unveiled a new solar-powered mini lamp named the “Little Sun Diamond.” It is the third design created by Eliasson for people without access to reliable energy.

The Australian Department of Treasury launched an investigation into security firm Building Risks International Pty. Limited following accusations that it underpaid guards at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Utah’s House and Senate voted to designate Robert Smithson’s “Spiral Jetty” and ancient rock art as official state works of art.

Austrian investigators recovered 67 paintings, including works by Oskar Kokoschka and Koloman Moser, that were stolen from a private collection in Vienna-Hietzing in 2014.

A discovery by the Art Loss Register led to the recovery of eight paintings stolen from a home in Denmark in 2000.

Tunisian authorities arrested a group of suspects in connection with the attempted smuggling of a 15th-century, 121-foot Torah scroll.

The Italian group 100% Animalisti dumped 88 pounds of animal excrement outside Venice’s Palazzo Grassi in protest over an upcoming exhibition by Damien Hirst. On its website, the group described the exhibition as “an insult to a city of art, of REAL art.”

German police raided Julian Charrière‘s studio after learning that he possessed a cannon. The artist built the air cannon, which is designed to shoot a single coconut, for the Antarctic Biennale.

Catherine Pégard, the director of Versailles‘s contemporary art program, announced that the palace will host a group show in the fall as opposed to exhibiting the work of a single artist.

ShowGrow, a gallery space and cannabis dispensary, opened in Los Angeles.

MANILA -- Lanz Zafra and Mikaela de Guzman took home the open singles titles in the 13th Prima Pasta Badminton Championships held recently at the Powersmash Badminton Hall in Makati City.

Zafra won the open men's singles championship by beating 2018 champ Rabie Oba-ob, 21-7, 19-21, 21-15.

Zafra first took down erstwhile champ Shahrul Shazwan, 16-21, 21-11, 21-16, in the quarterfinals before beating fellow national team member Ros Pedrosa, 21-19, 21-7, in the semifinals to set up a date with Oba-ob in the championship round.

De Guzman, on the other hand, pulled off an upset against Sarah Barredo, 21-13, 21-18, in the open women's division finals to win the title in the said division.

Meanwhile, Peter Magnaye and Alvin Morada won the open men's doubles title by beating Joper Escueta and Paul Pantig in the finals, 21-19, 21-15.

Alyssa Leonardo and Thea Pomar then defeated Jochelle Alvarez and Joella Geva Ramos De Vera, 21-13, 21-14, to win the women's open doubles title.

Magnaye and Pomar then connived to win the open mixed doubles title, beating Abhinaya Adira and Eleanor Christine Inlayo, 21-15, 21-13, in the finals.

Other doubles champions were Christian Bernardo and John Matthew Bernardo (men’s A); Aldreen Rae Concepcion and Susmita Angelique Ramos (women’s B); Anthone Abellana and Emil Jose Mangubat (men’s B); and Maria Virginia Lopez and Joyce Pauline Santos (women’s C); John Edgar Reyes and Michael Verdejo (men’s C); Althea Rio Fuentespina and Angel Valle (women’s D); Rainiel Lloyd Nguyen and Jose Miguel Ranada (men’s D); Samantha Quinsanos and Janella Quinto (women’s F); Daniel Gabriel Luciano and Jojo Meilat (men’s F); and Daniel Cabacungan and Kurt Luis Catap (men’s G). Self-Care: The Missing Link in Best Practice – Part I

Several years ago, something happened that changed the way I think about school psychology and how I train school psychologists. During a break at a PREPaRE workshop, a school psychologist working at a middle school approached me. He shared that while I was defining trauma and crisis, he realized that his entire school staff was currently traumatized and in crisis as a result of all the recent emphases on the Common Core, standardized testing, and personnel evaluations. His words touched a chord in me and I reflected deeply on what he said.

Similarly, I have more than once heard from former students who lament the fact that they did not know that their lives as school psychologists would be so stressful. The defeat in their voices made me wonder if there was more I could do to prepare them.

This work describes a journey I have undertaken that has revealed a detrimental omission in the way we train and practice as school psychologists. The good news is that steps can be taken to remediate the omission and a whole new generation of school psychologists can learn how to protect themselves against burnout and, more fundamentally, care for themselves in proactive, healthy ways.

The Ethical Mandate For Self-Care

Self-care is an ethical imperative of the utmost importance. For the purpose of this discussion, this claim is supported from three perspectives: (a) ethical codes, (b) burnout literature, and (c) neuroscientific research on the development of the prefrontal cortex; followed by a brief description of global self-care intervention.

The conversation begins in the field of ethics itself. Regardless of the field of practice, the universal ethical principle across all professions is do no harm. Specifically, “School psychologists have a legal as well as an ethical obligation to take steps to protect all students from reasonably foreseeable risk of harm” (NASP, 2010, p. 2).

Several authors writing in the area of clinical psychology have urged us to “[b]egin self-care at the top” (Norcross & Guy, 2013, p. 752) by petitioning professional associations to explicitly include self-care in their ethics, accreditation standards, and beyond (Barnett, Baker, Elman, & Schoener, 2007; Norcross & Guy, 2013, Wise, Hersh, & Gibson, 2012).

The NASP Principles for Professional Ethics (NASP, 2010) hold school psychologists to the highest standards. Yet, noticeably absent is any explicit mention of self-care in service of that high calling. The same omission is found in the American Psychological Association Ethics Code (APA, 2002). However, self-care is implied in both documents where they highlight the importance of psychologists, in their words and actions, demonstrating respect for and a commitment to just and fair treatment of all individuals with whom they work (APA, 2002; NASP, 2010).

Jacob, Decker, and Hartshorne (2011) criticize ethical codes “because they tend to be reactive” (p. 3). Take, for instance, Standard II.1.3:

School psychologists refrain from any activity in which their personal problems may interfere with professional effectiveness. They seek assistance when personal problems threaten to compromise their professional effectiveness. (NASP, 2010) Although self-care is necessary to ameliorate one's “personal problems,” in a field that has prevention as one of its 10 prioritized domains, proactive self-care should be one of the ethical standards in its own right. In the same way that mental health is much more than the absence of mental illness, nurturing positive emotional states through self-care is not the same as alleviating harmful disruptive emotional states after the fact.

There is precedent for including self-care proactively in ethical codes in an attempt to avoid personal problems. The American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014) names self-care as an ethical requirement, as does the Feminist Therapy Code of Ethics. See the relevant excerpts below:

IV. Therapist Accountability

E. A feminist therapist engages in self-care activities in an ongoing manner outside the work setting. She recognizes her own needs and vulnerabilities as well as the unique stresses inherent in this work. She demonstrates an ability to establish boundaries with the client that are healthy for both of them. She also is willing to self-nurture in appropriate and self-empowering ways. (Feminist Therapy Institute, Inc., 1999)Section C. Professional Responsibility – Introduction

[C]ounselors engage in self-care activities to maintain and promote their own emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual well-being to best meet their professional responsibilities. (ACA, 2014, p. 8) Additionally, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2010) mandates that school counselors “practice wellness” for optimal ethical practice.

E. Responsibilities to Self

E.1 Professional Competence

Professional school counselors ... E.1.b. Monitor emotional and physical health and practice wellness to ensure optimal effectiveness. (ASCA, 2010). Jacob et al. (2011) define ethics as a “system of principles of conduct that guide the behavior of an individual” (p. 1). We require school psychologists to employ best practice; to accomplish this they must be at their absolute best. If this is true, it follows that one of the principles of conduct that guides behavior in the field of school psychology without question must be to proactively practice self-care.

Burnout

Is it really necessary to legislate self-care? The answer is a resounding yes. There is an epidemic of stress in our society today and working in schools can be the epitome of stressful, especially in the current climate. Stress that is not mitigated effectively can lead to burnout. Those who practice in the mental health field have very high burnout rates due to the stressful nature of the work (Barnett et al., 2007; Shapiro, Brown, & Biegel, 2007; Wise et al., 2012). Moreover, school psychologists may have the highest burnout rates among all helping professionals (Burden, 1988; Huebner, Gilligan, & Cobb, 2002; Wise, 1985). Perhaps, this is due in part to the fact that “psychologists employed by the schools may have less control over aspects of service delivery than practitioners in private practice” (NASP, 2010, p. 2).

According to Maslach, burnout is defined as “a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment that can occur among individuals who work with people in some capacity” (Maslach, 1986, p. 61). Emotional exhaustion develops when work demands exceed personal resources, resulting in weariness to the point of no longer caring. Depersonalization happens as a consequence of not seeing people as people any longer but, instead, as problems to fix. Perceptions of reduced personal accomplishment foster a learned helplessness of sorts—the realization that no matter how hard one tries, nothing makes a difference. Maslach and Leiter (1997) cite work variables that can lead to burnout: work overload, lack of control, insufficient reward, unfair treatment, breakdown of community, values conflict, and lack of fit between the person and the job. There is a strong likelihood that anyone who works in schools has experienced at least one of these work variables at some point in their career.

To counteract the negative mental health effects of stress and burnout, practitioners must take care of themselves before they can care for others; otherwise, those with whom they work may be put at risk. “Poor therapist self-care is associated with increased personal vulnerability, reduced self-monitoring, poorer judgment, and, as a result, greater ethical breaches” (Keith-Spiegel & Koocher, 1985 as cited in Porter, 1995, p. 248). In contrast, characteristics of a healthy fully engaged worker are: energetic, involved, and efficacious (Maslach & Leiter, 2008). These characteristics can be cultivated through self-care.

Wityk (2003) maintains, “Self-care is one of the primary methods of preventing and treating therapist burnout” (p. 5). Furthermore, when discussing the sometimes seemingly insurmountable stressors psychologists face that can lead to burnout, Barnett pleads, “[W]e must engage in active attempts to effectively manage these challenges and demands through ongoing self-care efforts. Failure to do so may result in harm to our clients, our profession, ourselves, and others in our lives” (Barnett et al., 2007, p. 603).

In the literature on burnout prevention in mental health professionals, several authors address preservice interventions. The importance of emphasizing and practicing self-care in preservice training programs increases the odds that self-care will be practiced in service (Barnett et al., 2007; Bamonti et al., 2014; Heubner et al., 2002; Newell & MacNeil, 2010; Shapiro et al., 2007).

One way this can be done is through the modeling of wellness, stress management, and personal growth by faculty (Heubner et al., 2002). Self-care facilitates these positive psychological states. If self-care figures so prominently at the training level for protecting against practitioner burnout, shouldn't it be included in training standards?

At least one helping profession agrees. Section 2.F.1.l. of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) states “self-care strategies appropriate to the counselor role” must be included in the training curriculum included in Area 1. To address concerns about maintaining well-being and practicing effectively given the current stressful educational landscape, I resolved to promote self-care to members of my community (inside and outside the university).
