Kassia - Byzantine Hymns from the first female composer of the Medieval Occident
youtube
Kassia, Cassia or Kassiani (Greek: Κασσιανή, romanized: Kassianí, pronounced [kasia'ni]; c. 810 – before 865) was a Byzantine-Greek composer, hymnographer and poet. She holds a unique place in Byzantine music as the only known woman whose music appears in the Byzantine liturgy. Approximately fifty of her hymns are extant, most of which are stichera, though at least 26 have uncertain attribution. The authenticity issues are due to many hymns being anonymous, and others ascribed to different authors in different manuscripts. She was an abbess of a convent in the west of Constantinople. via Wikipedia

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 The Shabti (Megaera C. Lorenz, author; Matt Haynes, narrator) - wonderfully fun supernatural adventure romance set in the '30s. Just delightful. feat Horatio, a heckin' chonker of a cat. ilu horatio, even if you don't have a neck.
🥰 The Secret Lives of Color (Kassia St. Clair, author & narrator) - {nonfiction} This was rec'd in one of my discord servers as 'If you are ever in the need for a pleasant-sounding British woman telling you Interesting Facts About Colors then may I recommend The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair, which is exactly that for 8 hours' and it was precisely that and it was wonderful and soothing and so interesting.
🥰 MateHub: Legend (MateHub #1) (Marie Reynard) - erotic romance about a wolf shifter porn star who finds a Mate™ in his new human co-star. Tropetastic & hot af, exactly what I wanted from a book with this set up. But my fave thing was the absolutely hilarious porn star names: Richard Knotz, our main MC wolf shifter. Hunter Savage, Max Hardwood, Trick Wilde (coyote shifter, natch). I snorted with laughter every time one came up. [really love a book that just knows what it's trying to do and executes beautifully on that premise]
💖💖 +166K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Transcript: Steven Rogers and James ‘Bucky’ Barnes' appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, February 4, 2017 (deliciousblizzardshark) - MCU: stucky, 2.7K - cute & funny
fighting vainly the old ennui (Fahye) - MFMM: phryne/jack, 13K - AU where Phryne's a jewel thief but Jack's just as fascinated [reread]
Love Runs Wild (DevilDoll) - Teen Wolf: sterek, 9.4K - inspired by the shifter porn romance above, had to reread this fantastic story where they're both porn models & Stiles accidentally shows up to work with a hickey. True forever fave.

Books Read in 2022
I almost lost my list of all the books I’ve read this year when my phone died in November, so I’m putting it here for safe keeping. I’ve read more books this year than I have since I started reliably keeping track, thanks in large part to all the audiobooks I’ve been listening to on my monster of a commute. Almost everything on this list is from the library because 💖 for the library always. If you’re nosy like I am, enjoy!
1/13 The Unspoken Name, AK Larkwood
1/17 The Last Graduate, Naomi Novik
1/27 The Secret Lives of Color, Kassia St Clair
2/2 A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, T. Kingfisher
2/10 Recovering from Emotionally Immature Parents, Lindsay C Gibson (this is her second book on this topic. If this piques your interest, I strongly recommend reading her more thorough first book “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents” instead.)
3/4 American Indian Stories, Zitkala-Sa
3/23 The Thousand Eyes, AK Larkwood
3/24 The Traitor Baru Cormorant, Seth Dickinson
4/11 Where the Drowned Girls Go, Seanan McGuire
5/3 Rhythm of War, Brandon Sanderson
5/6 Caring for American Indian Objects: A Practical and Cultural Guide, Sherelyn Ogden (ed.)—skimmed parts not relevant to research for work.
5/9 The Unbroken, CL Clark
5/18 The Monster Baru Cormorant, Seth Dickinson
5/21 Le Petit Prince, Antoine de St. Exupéry
5/21 Fantômes, Raina Telgemeier
5/23 Barbe Bleue, Perrault (short story, audio in French)
5/27 Dark Tales, Shirley Jackson
5/30 La Peste, Albert Camus —audio, did NOT follow the plot at all. Required way more focus than I could do but I did listen to the whole thing. Understood the words etc in parts I could pay more attention to.
6/6 German Word Booster, Vocabulearn
6/6 The Animals at Lockwood Manor, Jane Healey
6/9 Black Tudors, Miranda Kaufman
6/15 Mexican Gothic, Silvia Moreno-Garcia
6/21 Vol de Nuit, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry —also couldn’t follow the audiobook well. Same as Camus. I think same narrator too—he whispers and projects in turns so can’t hear half the time, and if anything happens while driving I completely stop paying attention then check back in. Will get non audio version sometime.
6/27 The Heiress: The Revelations of Anne de Bourgh, Molly Greeley
7/6 Harry Potter à l’école des sorciers, JK Rowling (Don’t judge me too harshly—I’m at the mercy of what’s available in French at the library.)
7/14 The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee, David Treuer
7/25 Le Cerveau et la Musique, Michel Rochon (French Canadian audiobook—he spoke slower and because it is nonfiction didn’t whisper half the time so I could understand this one really well, yay!)
8/9 Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir
8/13 Nona the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (ARC)
8/17 Harrow the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir
8/19 Crocodile on the Sandbank, Elizabeth Peters (I’m rereading this series for pure nostalgia. I do not recommend it if you haven’t already read it. There’s a lot of colonialism and period-accurate (Victorian) racism that isn’t interrogated as much as it could be, along with a kind of 1980s feminism that doesn’t read well now, imo. I would not like these if I had not read them in middle school, but as it stands, I have an unshakable if critical fondness for them.)
8/20 The Mummy Case, Elizabeth Peters
8/22 Lion in the Valley, Elizabeth Peters
9/2 Deeds of the Disturber, Elizabeth Peters
9/15 The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog, Elizabeth Peters
9/16 The Last Camel Died at Noon, Elizabeth Peters
10/4 Sacrées Sorcieres, Roald Dahl (translated into French)
10/8 The Hippopotamus Pool, Elizabeth Peters
10/14 The Ape Who Guards the Balance, Elizabeth Peters
10/20 The Guardian of the Horizon, Elizabeth Peters
10/26 Seeing a Large Cat, Elizabeth Peters
11/1 A River in the Sky, Elizabeth Peters
11/7 Dracula, Bram Stoker (through Dracula Daily)
11/8 The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt, Toby Wilkinson
11/10 Awakenings, Oliver Sacks 11/15 The Curse of the Pharaohs, Elizabeth Peters
11/19 Treasured: How Tutankhamen Shaped a Century, Christina Riggs
11/21 Germany Travel Guide, Lonely Planet
11/29 Witch Hat Atelier 1, Kamome Shirahama
11/30 Egypt Travel Guide, Lonely Planet
12/2 Witch Hat Atelier 2, Kamome Shirahama
12/2 Witch Hat Atelier 3, Kamome Shirahama
12/7 Legends and Lattes, Travis Baldree
12/19 The Story of Egypt, Joann Fletcher
12/22 The Goblin Emperor, Katherine Addison
12/23 The Book of Hygge, Louisa Thomsen Brits
12/23 The Tea Dragon Society, Katie O’Neill
12/23 Witch Hat Atelier 4, Kamome Shirahama
Gave up on:
The Jasmine Throne, Tasha Suri (Disappointing—I wanted to like this one)
Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox, Forthright (Simply awful—not for me at all. Recommended by the library because of the audiobook narrator and I could not get through it.)

How old was too old to shotgun a beer? Roscoe wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer. Either way, he was planning on it at least once tonight. For now, though, he lingered at the edges of the festivities. He wasn’t quite sullen, but neither was he happy. Too much weighed on him personally; he had lost a great deal, including his fiance and his little brother. It was bound to catch up to him sometime, but at least alcohol could numb the feeling when it threatened to bubble to the surface.
And Kass helped, too. She and Roscoe had always butted heads, but lately something changed. They had gotten along better than they had in years. Sure, to any outsider, they still fought like cats and dogs, but their arguments lacked the real venom they’d had in years past. The two of them had gone through too much to let the past dictate things now - or at least, that’s how Roscoe felt. His misery was squarely rooted in the present.
“Can you believe it? Murders, storms, no end in sight...and they decide to keep throwing parties?” Roscoe shook his head, finished his beer, and tossed it on the ground. He crushed it with the heel of his boot. “I don’t fucking understand it. Do you?”

Goddamn, Constantine was frustrated. All this fuss and the town seemed to be functioning...normally. Didn’t people recognize that if they did nothing, their town would be lost? More people they loved would die. Did they know how awful that was, the feeling that they could have done something but didn’t? Fuck, they didn’t. And they wouldn’t until it was too late. The thoughts flew threw his head as his face darkened, and Costa leaned down, staring at the bar’s countertop. Occasionally he went to the bar for...well, his kind, but today, he didn’t even want to think about anything supernatural. It was much too frustrating.
So when someone sat down next to him and ordered an impressively strong drink, Costa looked over, arching a dark eyebrow. “Damn...pretty sure that would put me under. What, you got something to prove? Either that, or some huge problem you’re trying to forget?”

Kassia was back in town and that meant it was time for him to touch base with the other recovery agent. With Daralis Greyson no longer in town Emmett had taken the initiative to meet with the other recovery agents within Hollow Grove when it was necessary. After all, he didn’t plan on leaving town anytime in the near future. Once more, the safe haven was his long-term home base. Emmett had reached out to Kassia the day after she returned, giving her the night to settle in before asking to meet. With no idea how long it would take he’d requested at least an hour of her time to be on the safe side. Their talk could last the entire chunk of set-aside time or they could be done within a few minutes, the vampire couldn’t see the future. Duration depended on what she had gone through and the things she had done.
Picking a quiet corner in the coffee shop during the slowest part of the day he arrived early to order them both a drink and take a seat. Should the conversation move to more sensitive material that should be discussed in such a public place, they could take their drinks and go elsewhere. The less formal setting was chosen to be sure Kassia didn’t feel he’d only asked her to meet to scold her. When the door to the cafe opened he looked over, standing when he recognized the dark-haired woman so she could clearly see where he was and wouldn’t be forced to search. “It’s very good to see you again Kassia. I hope you don’t mind, I ordered two coffees. If you’d like something different don’t feel bad about ignoring the second drink I ordered, I’ll absolutely be able to finish it.”

The Spy
Kassia fumed under the powerful grip of her captor. A tall hobgoblin woman. Taller than her own elven height. The two of them were given a wide berth by the other soldiers, all positioned in a semi-circle in front of a stoney-faced hobgoblin she knew to be Lord Azrok.
“This one-”
“Kassia,” she muttered. The grip on her arms tightened painfully, and the conversation continued as if she wasn’t there.
“-was found in restricted areas, Lurkana,” Azrok stated rather than asked.
“Yes, sir,” Kassia’s captor answered crisply.
“But claims to have entered Stromkuldur lawfully. And should have, therefore, known better.”
“This is what we are working to confirm, sir. They should be here shortly.”
Kassia wouldn’t classify their tones as calm, but there was something unshakable in Azrok’s voice. It promised inevitability that was used to inspire troops and cow trespassers like herself. She fought the chill that went through her body. Stromkuldur, her party had been assured, wasn’t known for their mercy or light treatment of enemies, and she wasn’t what you would call a sturdy woman. She was supposed to be light and clever and she wasn’t supposed to get caught.
“Of course I came in lawfully!” she postured as if her hands weren’t going numb from blood loss. “You saw those stupid papers yourself!”
Those bodies had been a blessing. Waterlogged and smeared from the river, the documents hadn’t looked much better than the adventurers they were found on, but they were enough for Jahn to decipher and then reconstruct for Kassia in the (unlikely) (presumably) event that she aroused suspicion. Noah had griped that they were wasting his precious ink and Layklin had griped that the drow that hired them hadn’t warned about any entry requirements, but in any event, that swirly-hearted and glittery-inked parchment were the first thing she was asked for when she was apprehended. The only thing determining if her death was immediate or delayed (which meant a chance for escape).
Lurkana didn’t answer her. No one did. Despite the room full of armed and armored soldiers, not a sound was heard and not a muscle moved until a voice announced, “They’re here.”
Kassia took a breath and braced herself.
“Hi Lurkana!” a rasping goblin voice greeted them all brightly and the source poked their head into the room. In their shapeless gray shirt and rough brown pants, they looked nearly indistinguishable from any of the other goblins running through the Undermountain. Long, mud-green ears extended in either direction in front of the pale hair they had held back with what looked like fish bones, and they had matching scruff on their chin. Their dull red eyes and goblin-sharp smile didn’t have the maniacal edge she expected of an interrogator (nor did they have all their teeth; Kassia could see an incisor missing from their broad grin), and she didn’t see any tools or even weapons besides a fairly standard dagger. In fact, the only distinguishing feature about them was a notebook at their side.
“Mar C,” Lurkana greeted solemnly.
…Oh.
Kassia bit her tongue to keep her expression flat, recognizing the name Jahn had forged on the bottom of her paper. She’d been expecting some sort of verification, she supposed, but it hadn’t looked like this little goblin stepping easily into the room. But maybe this was a good thing, she reasoned with herself, taking in this Mar C’s easy and distracted expression. Maybe she could work with this.
“Oh, come on,” she scoffed aloud. “No offense intended to your operations, but you surely can’t expect that goblin to remember every person that-” Lurkana twisted until Kassia felt her muscles would tear, and she choked off into silent curses.
“Oh! Hi adventure lady!” Mar C waved to her as well, and then almost as an afterthought, “And Azrok! Sir!” They seemed completely immune to the atmosphere of the room, and the soldiers, likewise, were unmoved by Mar C’s chipper greeting.
Azrok spoke.
“This woman is here for trial. She claims to have papers. We will know where her lies start before proceeding.” Each sentence fell like stones.
I do have papers, Kassia thought, but didn’t risk speaking out again. Lurkana, easily pinning Kassia’s arms with one hand, handed Mar C the sheet. They gave it a half-hearted look but then tilted their head up to Kassia’s face.
“Can you let her go?” Mar C asked. “She’s so…” They scrunched their face in a pantomime of pain.
Azrok gave a single slow nod, and Kassia gasped in relief when blood was allowed to rush back to her fingertips. Her arms flopped near-uselessly at her side, but the surrounding soldiers, if possible, stood even straighter at attention. Escape was near impossible at best right now, so she tried to smile encouragingly at Mar C, tried to will familiarity between them. Mar C smiled pleasantly back while they turned the paper to different angles in their hands. A small sketch of herself adorned the top right corner all in the simpleset lines. Big brown blobs for her eyes and a short yellow squiggle over her head for her curly hair. Her party had fiercely debated the necessity of adding her spectacles and in the end opted against - the simpler the better. Even the one made by another goblin was nearly incomprehensible nonsense. They were so obviously just a facade, a road bump, a cursory check for whoever didn’t have the foreknowledge about the papers or the ability to reasonably forge them. So Kassia just needed a scrap of doubt to work with. A single second of hesitation. Even just a thread of curiosity or indifference…
“This is really cool!” Mar C praised and then turned Lurkana with sparkling eyes. “Can I keep it? I never knew that people were fans of my work!”
Kassia’s hope fell into a pit in her stomach.
“No- Now listen, I bet if you just took a second-”
“It’s such nice handwriting, too!” Mar C continued, heedless.
“You are sure, Mar C,” Lurkana intoned. “This accusation is not a light matter.”
“Oh, sure!” The goblin laughed. It sounded like a congested cough. “Look look look.” They pressed comfortably up to Lurkana’s side and pointed at the paper. “See? This says that her height is ‘Very’ which is silly because you have ‘Very’ height; this lady only has sort of very height.”
“That’s…” She stared at Lurkana in dread. That wasn’t…anything; it was meaningless. But the room was listening intently.
“And this ink is really nice, but I don’t like this shade of blue. And I’m not allowed to add hearts this far up on the papers,” They gestured to an arbitrary spot, “because Bosses say it gets in the way of my work. And I don’t know where this is.” They pointed at the Hometown line where “Somewhere hot ;)” was written
“But-” Kassia felt dizzy. She’d taken that verbatim from the found document!
This is a kangaroo court, she realized in horror.
“I like my job.” Mar C startled her by addressing her directly. Keen red eyes held hers. “If you’d talked to me, I would remember.” Then with a cheeky smile, they added, “And you’re very pretty, but you’re also very skinny and not my type. Sorry~”
She… She was going to die here...because this little-
Kassia lunged with a surge of thoughtless anger at this absurdity. Lurkana’s arms predictably locked around her before she could reach the goblin, but she spit anyway, “You stupid little rat!”
“Nope! Mar C!” they corrected, unfazed.
“I could kill you!”
Mar C laughed again.
“Not as bad as how Bosses will kill me if I’m late again.” They asked Lurkana, “Can I go now? They’re already mad from being late yesterday but it definitely wasn’t my fault because I was just hanging out at the river and something grabbed me and-”
“I’ve told you that I do not care to hear about your dates, Mar C.” Lurkana cut them off. “Yes, you are dismissed.”
“And can I keep this?” They waved the forgery.
Azrok gave another single nod.
“It’s of no more use.”
“Great! Thanks!” Mar C folded it up neatly and stuck it in the little bag they carried. “Bye, adventure lady! Good luck!”
The goblin darted back into the hall and the door shut with finality behind them.

Grand Chase Fanfic - Useless Friend
"I wish to go back… when I could be… like my past self."
Baldinar is an echo of who he was, but memories are made to be forgotten. Regrets are nothing but an indulgent distraction he has not craved in the centuries since he discarded that name. He has forgotten the Prime Minister, all but the pain and misery that drove him to take Ashtaroth's footsteps and bring ruination to this world.
When an old friend of the dead Prime Minister's shows up the night he is planning to execute the Grand Chase, old sorrows contort into rage.
There's nothing more he'd love to do than wring Kassias's neck.
"Emotions… they fade as time passes. Like mine..."
Seeing what his friend has become, Grandiel must contend with whether his feelings for Baldinar have disappeared in his lonely time reflecting within the Phantasmal Sector. On one hand is the lively and dignified Baldinar of his memories— on the other, bloodshed past comprehension. Surely that should be motivation enough to be rid of his memories, should it not?
Unfortunately, much as he would like them to, Grandiel cannot deny how much he misses that friend who once forced him to see the world's sunshine.
A look at Monster Train 301.
Pairings: Past Baldinar/Grandiel
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence, canon major character death

Fila tutto liscio.
F. Benigno - Terrore e Terrorismo. Saggio storico sulla violenza politica;
G. Savatteri - Il delitto di Kolymbetra;
U. Eco - Baudolino;
Edward Wilson-Lee - Il catalogo dei Libri naufragati: il figlio di Colombo e la ricerca della biblioteca universale;
J. S. Mill - Saggio Sulla Libertà;
C. Soule - L’anno dell’Oracolo;
L. Penny - Case di Vetro. Le indagini del Commissario Gamache;
D. Adams - Guida Galattica per Autostoppisti: Trilogia più che completa in 5 parti;
O. Tokarczuk - I vagabondi;
C. Bordas - Come muoversi tra la folla;
D. Macculloch - Il silenzio nella storia del Cristianesimo;
A. Malraux - La condizione umana;
K. Daoud - Zabor o I Salmi;
G. Papi - Il censimento dei radical chic;
T. Bernard - Il soccombente;
M. Nousiainen - Alla radice;
P. Jaenada - Lo strano caso di Henri Girard;
V. Perrin - Cambiare l’acqua ai fiori;
G. Carofiglio - La versione di Fenoglio;
M. Malvaldi \ G. Ghammouri - Vento in scatola;
J. Cohen - Il libro dei numeri;
V. Despentes - Trilogia della città di Parigi - Vernon Subutex;
D. Buzzati - Il deserto dei Tartari;
Francesco Petrarca
