CHAPTER THREE — UNTIL OUR PATHS CROSS ONCE MORE

SUMMARY:

After a deal gone wrong, Regina finds herself cursed with the gift of eternal life. In hopes of finding a cure for her dilemma, she finds herself face to face with woman called Emma Swan, who is also looking for the man who has made them both immortal. Together, they must travel the world in search of answers (and maybe even fall in love along the way).

“How do you do this all the time?” Emma finally says, deflating. “They can be quite ridiculous, though they mean well.”

“Well, I suppose it’s what I’m used to,” Regina supplies with a sigh. “My father was a Spanish prince. I was raised in this world. My mother wanted me to become queen one day, so I was trained for this very early on.”

Though they aren’t keen on sharing with each other in general, they rarely ever speak of their lives before.

“Is that what you wanted though?” Emma ventures, studying her curiously.

Regina laughs haughtily.

“I wanted many things, but that was never one of them.” She thinks of the girl she had been, dreaming of a simple life of freedom with the man she had loved. Perhaps, if things had not gone the way they had, she and Daniel would have grown old together, maybe gone on to have children. Or perhaps, she would be married off to a king, fulfilling her mother’s wish. “My mother is probably pleased, wherever she is, that her lessons did not go to waste.”

“Then why do it at all?”

It’s a valid question, one she finds herself asking time and time again.

“Because it’s what I know. Because it’s safe. Sure, those women in there are ridiculous with their petty gossip and trivial problems, but they married into power, and just being associated to that power has kept me safe over the years.”

“Do you want to know what I think?” Emma asks. She does not wait for Regina to respond. “I think that if you’re doomed to a lifetime of wandering the earth, why not live how you want? I mean, we’re stuck here forever, why would you trap yourself in an endless charade of something you are not? Why not go after what you really want?”
