The On1y One visual analysis (Ep. 5): Seeking an opening
Something I really enjoy about The On1y One's visual storytelling is how it uses framing to represent the tentative way Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang embed themselves into each other's lives. Through their interactions, we see Tian learning to let people in while Wang gives himself permission to trust those around him, and that fraught journey towards connection is beautifully captured by the show's cinematography choices.
From the first episode, we see the show using architectural framing to represent Tianâs aloofness, whether itâs the walls of his old neighborhood that tuck him away from his classmates or the closet that hides his always packed suitcase. So I find it really interesting how the architectural framing of his homeroomâs classroom window serves a completely different purpose: to showcase Tianâs ability to fight against his instincts for pushing people away and gradually open up to Wang.
As noted by @heretherebedork, that open window changes the (physical and emotional) wall between them. Ever since he acknowledged their relationship in Episode 3 through this window, it's here that Tian continues to signal the changing boundaries of their relationship.
Each episode he slowly transforms from a silent observer removed from the world around him to someone extending the care Wang so desperately craves, and the window, as a frame within a frame, directs our attention to the significance of these moments. Tian not only offers Wang physical relief but also emotional relief--he sees Wang despite the latter having experienced a lifetime of being ignored, and this all happens through the window.
Moreover, the camera language The On1y One uses to frame Wang's response reveals how heady that recognition feels.
One of my favorite examples of this is when Wang confronts Tian about helping capture the thugs who had attacked him. Tian denies having been involved but Wang refuses to believe him, playfully pushing him against the wall as he lists all the evidence to the contrary.
What makes this sequence of shots so compelling is how the framing changes as the two characters become more aware of the significance of Tian's actions.
The sequence is just a series of single shots (meaning each shot only features one person), but we can feel the tension between Wang and Tian because of the shift in balance and shot size. The shots start off-balanced and dirty, the characters' faces off to the edge of the frame and obscured by the other, but soon the framing closes in on their eyes gazing directly at each other. The extreme close-up is strangely honest and intimate, evoking a sense of wonder and nerves.
Being confined to such a tight frame proves to be too much for Tian, however, and the camera responds accordingly by shifting to a medium shot, as if to give him a breather. But from Wang's small smile, you can tell he feels pleasure at the idea of someone caring enough to protect him, and the camera language for the rest of the scene uses several techniques to visualize the emotional connection he allows himself to indulge in.
(See the lovely rack focus during Tian's "I was just thinking you must have been very scared" speech". Rather than editing together separate shots of Tian and Wang, the camera keeps both characters in frame and smoothly changes the focus between the two, visually linking them together. Their vulnerable conversation has fostered an irreversible shift in their relationship.)
So it's notable that when Tian tells Wang he is thinking of leaving Wang home to stay in the school dormitories, we get this absolutely devastating shot from outside their window, the closed frame now creating a stark line separating the two:
Tian: Why do you want to stay at the school? Wang: ...I wasn't familiar with you. Tian: How about now? Do you still want to stay at school? Wang: No, now that I'm more familiar with you, right? And you? Do you still want to stay at school? Tian: I think I will in the future.
Wang interprets Tian's decision as a rejection of him, and the shot is cold and isolating to reflect that. Their last few interactions were one step forward and two steps back.
What smart visual storytelling.

Thank you for the tag, @pauls1967moustache! My heart is in my fiction, and I'm happy to talk about a bit. <3
How many works do you have on ao3?
15! All within the Beatles fandom (various pairings, but with a focus on J/P).
Whatâs your total word count?
95,825.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
In John's Lap (early days mclennon), play me one of yours (early days, Jim POV on J/P), Brian Manages (Sole Direction) (1968; Brian lives AU/Fix it, mclennon from Brian POV), Serenade in Paul (PWP mclennon), I was the dream weaver (1968/1969 breakup, angst; John POV)
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
I do. I deeply appreciate it when people take the time to let me know their thoughts, or simply that they liked my storyâand replying feels like completing a handshake.
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Probably I was the dream weaverâthere is some hope in the end, but it's a small flame in a dark night. But the love is there.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
I think Brian Manages, which is only appropriate, since it's a Secret Santa gift (2023). Yes, the story is about saving Lennon/McCartney, but it's mainly about Brian, and it was important to me to give him a happy ending as well. And, of course, Eyes of the Storm: John goes to a private opening of Paulâs EYES OF THE STORM exhibition to meet with Paul, who, after many years and many ups and downs, is still his lover, and his favorite collaborator. Shameless wish fulfillment fic: John lives, everyone livesâŚand everyone is there.
Do you write crossovers?
Not yet, but I would love to one day! I can't think of any, though...
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not yet.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do write smut, and I think I tend to write smut with feelings. No specific kinks yet, except...Paul's leg fur and body hair. And his entire spritely gestalt.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware. Brrr.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Again, not that I'm aware.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, twice, with @ohjohnnysblog. Thank you, OJ, for holding my hand during my very first fic, Storage Space, and for coming back for Serenade in Paul!
What's your all-time favourite ship?
I'm probably mainly a John/Paul fan, but I have a soft spot for Paul/Mal, and actually enjoy Paul/ any male Beatles-adjacent character, or Paul in a threesome...
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I am determinedâ*determined!*âto finish my story about Old Man Paul releasing his mclennon dreams/memories on the world. I'm also determined to write a long Woodland Sprite Paul AU. One day.
What are your writing strengths?
I swear I'm not fishing for compliments, but I honestly can't say. I don't hate my writing, I'm just reluctant to analyze myself that way, you know. But if I had to pick one: I think I have the ability to remember, out of all the Beatles stuff I read and saw and thought about, the right detail at the right time while writing. Not as in listing facts, but as in: this would fit nicely here.
What are your writing weaknesses?
English isn't my first language, which in the context of Beatles fic means I'm not your best choice if you're looking for realistic Liverpool dialogue to leap off the page. I wish I had Paul's talent for mimicry...!
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
People can do what they want, but if there's entire pages in a language I can't read, and no footnotes to help me, the story isn't for me. Individual words and phrases are a different thing, of course.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
This one! Beatles! McLennon! Paul, you were my first, and I was your billionth!
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
Breaking news, I think I might try my hand at Peaky Blinders at some point...
What's your favourite fic you've written?
Similar to you, Mo, I love all of mine equally, but I have special love in my heart for the fic that lifted me out of a spell of the writing horrors this fall: Johnny Gentle and His Group, about the Silver Beetles' 1960 Scottish Tour. And, of course, Hurricaneville: leg combing McLennon in 1961!
Tagging, if youâd like @eveepe, @revollver, @m1ssunderstanding, @unchaineddaisychain , @therealsaintscully and @scurator!
#asks#my fic#writing#my navel isn't as furry and soft as Paul's but it was fun to gaze at it nevertheless!#mclennon fanfiction#mclennon

since JJK is over, I'm going to rb incorrect manga predictions tagged "fic idea". I might get around to writing them eventually, but you're welcome to look for prompts this way, just pls tag me so i can read them.
Ig the goal here is to run through my main blog @hermitw to find my personal theories, and those I've read from other people that shape the way I interpret JJK, to organize them into masterlists and sort by whether I would die on that hill or if it's just as thought.
I've had so many theories but they kinda build on each other and sound insane out of context, so this is an attempt to be organized and more easily link to sources, etc.
My credentials are:
I've been through JJK 12 times (missing the guide books and not entirely through the light novels). I love JJK because every time I notice different things, foreshadowing, connections etc, but this also means that I see things leaning more on different characters' perspectives each time.
Turning 25 has cursed me with media literacy (honestly it's so different to watch movies etc. now compared to previous years, idk how much is related to brain development or sobriety but all I can say is that I have more awareness now than in the past. Like I can see the forest from the trees better.)
Super autism (jujutsu kaisen has been my hyperfixation/special interest since 2023. Ik it isn't that long, I was rly trying to wait until it was completed bc I generally hate waiting between episodes but at this point I fiend for manga leaks), noticing patterns and just. Thinking about this all the time.
I also try to consume several translations, to get a fuller understanding.
That being said, I'm no expert and really falling short when it comes to context of Buddhism, Shinto, history, and language barriers. I'm always grateful for any additional information or corrections.
And I know that some of these things can't be proven or disproven within canon, and that's fine - I'm not trying to prove myself right or change anyone's opinion. What matters to me is not falling for misinformation, and noticing more on every read.
One of the things I love about JJK and stories in general is that it can be interpreted in so many ways, and that doesn't make them wrong, they can coexist. I really enjoy seeing different theories and headcanons, even if I disagree with them, because it's interesting, it's a thought that I would never have on my own.
my only beef is when they spread misinformation - i probably would have understood JJK a lot faster if I'd just read the manga a couple of times, and not consumed so much from unreliable sources.
Tbh I started out as an anime-only, but kept asking my friends too many questions (so I could write canon divergent fics where redemption arcs happen lmao, but I needed it to be Lore Accurate) and they couldn't answer without giving spoilers.
I think it took 5 watches for me for feel like I understood JJK - in that time I looked up to whatever analysis or theories I could find, but over time began to realize that a lot of them don't hold up. At this point I get rly excited when someone thinks more than me, shares their deeper understanding, especially when it relates to cultural or historical elements that I missed before.
So I'll try to sort things out by whether they're hills that I would die on, or how serious they are, and providing context for whatever might come across as rage bait or polarizing on its own.
Idk though I'm not great with being organized online hahaha

The Forgotten Shounen: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
This is not a âWhy you should watch/read khrâ or anything like that. This is just me going into the deep dive and throwing my findings at you. Iâm making this because khr used to be my favourite series when I was 15 (I had plushees, posters, tradingcards, the art book etc) and now as an adult I constantly find myself baffled at how unknow it seems to be.
1. Okay first what is khr?
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! or just Reborn! is a series by Akira Amano which was published in Weekly Shounen Jump from 2004 to 2012 (with 42 volumes) and got an anime adaption which run from 2006 to 2010 on Tv Tokyo (with 202 episodes and one OVA).
2. Whatâs it about?
Khr is a parody of the italian mafia and plays in a world where the mafia is heavily influencial. The protagonist is the japanese middle schooler Sawada Tsunayoshi who is known as âNo good Tsunaâ because of his failing grades, general weak and cowardly personality and weak physics.
He becomes aware of the mafia world when a 2 year old baby called Reborn arrives at his house claiming to be the greatest hitman and declaring himself his home tutor. Reborn was send by the 9th head of the Vongola famiglia who is ready to retire and looking for a new heir. Which of course, is supposed to be Tsuna and now it's Reborns job to shape him into a worthy sucessor.
Tsuna rejects the violence of the mafia world and refuses the position as the 10th. Thanks to Reborn and his general craziness Tsuna meets different people and starts to make real friendships. Reborn wants 6 of those friends to be Tsuna's future guardians, basically a group of people which will be closest to him in the vongola famiglia. Tsuna might have no interest in those positions but the friendships he builds with them become really precious to him.
Reborns arrivial also brings in the enemies of the Vongola family which leads to Tsuna being forced to engage in battles. Generally Tsuna openly avoids fights and prefers to run away but will put himself in danger for his friends' sake or because of something Reborn did.
Through out the series Tsuna matures and gains strenght but he never becomes a power fantasy. He's just a guy with many flaws who grows through the human connections he makes.
Personally I think the relationship between Reborn and Tsuna is one of the best student teacher reltaionships in all of manga only topped by Mob and Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. Especially the last arc really underlines their unique relationship to me.
Furthermore, khr offers a new and unique battle system: The flames. I'm not gonna go into to too much detail but the general idea is that one fights with their dying will flame which basically turns off your the savety switch so you can fight with everything you have. The flames are seperated into different categories such as: sky, storm, mist, rain, sun, lightning and cloud and have different attributes asigned to each one. Tsuna's use of the sky flame and his transformation when using it is still one of my favourite shounen transformations to this day.
3. What happened?
The series did really well and then not so well over the course of its serialisation. After the manga got an anime adaption it increased in populairty and video games, light novels, and other products such as CDs were created based on the series. Reborn is one of the best selling series of Weekly ShĹnen Jump and has sold around 30 Million volumes overall. It was and still is very popular in Japan but rather unknown in the west.
According to the article "The Rise and Fall of Weekly Shonen Jump: A Look at the Circulation of Weekly Jump" khr was the 10th bestselling series in Weekly ShĹnen Jump, with a total of 7 million copies sold in 2007.
This number increasing to 15 milion in 2008. Which placed khr into the 4th best selling series of 2008 in Japan.
Between 2008 and 2010 those sales declined but still kept strong with khr as the 6th top selling manga in 2009, 8th best selling in 2010 and then 24th best selling in 2012.
In November 2014, readers of the Da Vinci magazine voted khr number 17 on a list of Weekly ShĹnen Jump's greatest manga series of all time.
After the anime came to an apprupt stop in 2010 for unknown reasons the manga sells took a visible hit. (Apparently the studio wanted to put the anime on halt because they were busy with other projects and give Akira Amano time to develop her story but I couldn't find any source for this claim) Furthermore, the rushed last chapters of the manga in 2012 declined the popularity of the series even more. There's no offical statement as to why the manga was ended in such a way but it's reasonable to assume that Jump either cut it considering the decreasing sales or Akira Amano choose to end it for personal reasons.
Nontheless, Tsuna not being included in Jump Force (a fighting game where you can play as different characters from Jump) in 2019 even tho he made it in earlier Jump Stars games also underlines the decreased interest in the series.
Rumors on a reboot or anime adaption of the last two arcs surface from time to time but are genereally unlikely. Artland the studio which made khr has gone bankrupt around 2015-2016. It might be taken on by another studio but rather uncommen especially with such an old series.
4. Art style
The khr anime ended over 10 years ago and the old art style might not be appealing to newer audiences.
Especailly because the anime adaption follows Akira Amanos old art style which heavily developed within the years. Here a picture comparing characters in the new art style:
A modern anime adaption in the new art style would be aesthetically pleasing. It would probably look similiar to Psycho Pass since Akira Amano did the concept art for this series.
(My personal art student hot take is that both art styles are unique and fun. Up to this day Akira Amano still has my favourite art style and even if the amount folds in the characters clothing is a little extreme I love it dearly.)
5. Criticism
The show is not without flaws and even if I greatly enjoy it it wouldn't be right not to adress them.
Daily Life Arc:
A lot of people view the first 20 to 25 episodes as fillers and quickly lose intererst in the series. This is due to the fact that Akira Amano inteded the series to be a gag manga and focuses the first chapters on world building, character introduction and comical narratives. It's rumored that the decision to develop the story into a battle shounen was made because the sales weren't doing well enough at first. So the first chapters/episodes may seem titidious but are necessary for the story and the development of the characters. The tonal shift from a more gintama like gag manga to a darker battle focused story can also be offputting to some viewers.
Either way a lot of people blame this arc when discussing why khr never got an english dub or didn't end up on Toonami. I've also read that the manga never finished serializing in the north america. However, it finished in other western languages like german and spanish.
Censoring:
The anime censors A LOT. From Gokudera's smoking habit, Yamamoto's whole character arc which deals with heavy themes such as depression and suicidal thoughts. The general bloodiness of the manga was censored and sometimes whole chapters and characters were left out even if those were important to the devolopment of others.
Filler episodes:
Out of the 202 episodes the anime has around 29 filler episodes which makes roughly 14 %.
Sexism:
Even if Reborn was written by a woman most female characters are rather flat and their storylines often tied to a male character in one way or another.
Genereal things:
Khr, like many other long running series, is sometimes criticised for a lack of world building or unpopular narrative choices.
6. Hope?
Khr isn't exactly dead. As stated before the series is still very popular in Japan and still gets new merch pretty regulary. There are also petitions floating around for a reboot or a new anime season but those never get a lot of traction. Furthermore #Reborn2ćă˘ăăĄĺ (#Reborn2ndAnimation) used to get some traction on twitter not too long ago. Last year the Anime News Network did a poll on which anime the readers would like to see a rebooot of and khr placed second.
Either way here's a collection of recent khr things I could find.
- In 2018 a new bluray set was released in north america
- The khr stage play reached yet another new season
- A mobile game was released last year
- Currently ongoing anime cafe event called "Concerto di Vongola"
- Last month there was an event with the former VAs and stage play actors where they discussed their favourite khr episodes.
- There has been an increase in blind reacts to the openings on youtube which might bring in a new fan base. The biggest one I could find had around 90k views and was made in 2019. On this note check out the soundtrack. The first openeing Drawing Days by SPLAY still makes me go insane (but I'm biased of course)
There also renewed hope for a new season/reboot because Shaman King, Inuyasha and Bleach got anounced for new seasons after a long hiatus. It's important to keep in mind that the circumstances for those series are differnt tho. For example bleachs new anime is often tied to the immense success of the gatcha game.
7. Conclusion
Khr is a series which used to be a flagship for Weekly Shounen Jump and is deeply beloved by it's fans, especially in Japan. It influenced other shounen series like bnha. It would be nice to see it gaining a bigger fanbase in the west :)

Just watched Front Cover (Dir: Ray Yeung) and I have to say I really loved it. Basically this is me saying, "While the reviews would make you run... (Slant Magazine literally gave it half a star out of 5 and most sites treat it as a rom com - seriously?) this short film held a lot for me. So read my alternative review instead!"
I'm impressed that the director is creating a dual-cultural film geared towards both Asian (specifically Chinese-speaking countries) and American audiences. Obviously viewership is likely to be much more diverse than that, but that is a really impressive undertaking as it is. I thought his choices were really wise considering that, since while it is absolutely a gay film, it's also about the complexities of culture, trauma, and family dynamics that make us all who we are. This is a film that bridges massive gaps, and he's more aware of that than anyone, so before someone jumps on another "This film is all about stereotypes" bandwagon like Slant dude - Yeah, it is. Absolutely. It's about how we stereotype each other and ourselves and the cultures we come from, gay and otherwise.
My Rating:
Plot/Depth: **** (Gets better as it goes)
Acting: **** (Main actors are amazing, side actors ok)
Cinematography: **** (I'm really picky but I CAME BACK and updated this because actually there's so much stellar camera work but I felt some scenes could have been better shot.)
Daring: ***** (Read on)
Subtle spoilers below as I defend my point.

The director's choice to bring Communism into the forefront from the very beginning was in my mind brilliant. It reminds viewers of the huge divide between Ning and Ryan's upbringings. The fact that Ning's father was on the military side at Tiananmen square and that Ning's famous role on Chinese film is that of a PLA fighter (who presumably dies with honor) adds a ton of complexity to the character and the background he is coming from.
The use of media as a threat to Chinese actors is a huge factor in the film. The double-standard of international demand for (especially Asian) gay content versus the discrimination towards actors/performers in their home countries is laid bare here. The media has Ning on a string because there's nothing protecting him if he is outed. The industry will drop him in a second. Ryan learning to see this is extremely important in the development of his character and of their relationship. (By the way, note that the actors in this film are not Chinese, but American.)
The sexual moments in this film, though very short, were stunning. (Ok, moment singular, maybe. But I'm including tension/buildup.) The little touches and eye contact when they haven't even acknowledged anything to each other, followed by a very hot "don't touch my man" moment and mad heat-rush follow-up, then the bittersweetness and humor of their interactions was just a massive "yes" for me.
Finally, the complexities of personal identity are so well explored in my mind that I can't believe this all happened in just an hour and a half. We get such a good sense of Ryan's identity (and its fragility) through the intimacy we are allowed- seeing his hookup chats (on basically old-school Grindr,) and his experiences of racism within the gay community and at work. I'm not going to spoil the ultimate Ryan victory scene since you're all going to watch this now but this is what I'm talking about - the moment he snaps gets 5 stars from me.
Ryan's relationship with his parents and his discomfort with Chinese language and cultural spaces make him incredibly relatable. He is proud to be gay but not proud to be Chinese American, while Ning is proud to be Chinese but cannot come out despite his clear self-knowledge of his sexuality. As far as Ning's character goes, we see both his real personality and his media personality, in a way that really hurts the heart but also shows his inner turmoil - He can have his dream or he can have love, but he can't at this point in history have both.
Ray Yeung is the chief of the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, where this film was first screened. It has also been shown in Taiwan. It has been aired in China through US Embassy private screenings.

Is Van Actually Good?
Who's ready for me to ruin the whole god damned season? Let's get started!
***
Van is a celestial, specifically a planetar (a type of angel second in power only to solars) from Elysium. Planetars are considered lawful good (although some sources state that they can be neutral or even slightly chaotic as long as they uphold their code) and large in size with high charisma stats, a challenge rating of 16 (VERY powerful), and advantage against spells and magical effects. They can detect good and evil, speak all languages, see invisible and shapechanged creatures/objects, spot hidden traps, and ALWAYS KNOW WHEN THEY HEAR A LIE.
Their ability to always detect lies is called Divine Awareness. It's not a spell. It's an otherworldly level of insight with no check or saving throw and (to my knowledge) only the two strongest types of angel have Divine Awareness which makes the ability quite rare. It's also innate and can't even be hindered by the 8th level spell Glibness (unless a DM bends the rules to allow it), so it's also a very powerful ability that should not be underestimated.
Well, what about the fact that Van is trapped in a crystal? Would that negate his abilities? The answer is actually no! We know this because of Gorthalax. You know, that dude in the first season that the gang automatically didn't trust because he was a fiend which made them super careful around him? That guy. In season one, he made a contract with Johnny Spells and became his patron while trapped in a crystal. In season 2 (episode 4), he refilled Fig's warlock spell slot while trapped in a crystal (that was also cursed). This proves that while they are limited by the crystal, the beings within them can still interact with the outside world to some degree.
Finally, there's the fact that Van was cast out from paradise (after napping through a clarion trumpet call made by his superior/love calling for them to fight the forces of fiends). To be cast out, an angel must (intentionally or unintentionally) commit an act of evil and then continue down an evil path or refuse to see the error in their ways. If they were willing to repent, they have a power/s revoked or are demoted. If they were unrepentant, they were usually stripped of powers and cast into the lower planes, but some were only exiled from the upper plains. As Van is both still a celestial and a powerful being (as stated by the identify spell), he would have been an exile and still have his powers. Here's were things start to get interesting. Banished angels respond in one of two ways. They either live on one of the other planes (usually the material plane) and may or may not try to eventually redeem themselves OR they become even more unrepentant, with some even looking for a place in the hierarchy of the lower planes. The monster manual itself states that a celestial straying from the good alignment is a "horrifying rarity", meaning that while it's rare, it's still possible.
***
Put it all together and we have ourselves a lot of questions
1. Does Van still have working Divine Awareness?
2. If he does still have Divine Awareness, why does he play dumb when he knows someone is lying (especially after the initial lies and explanation about the dangers)? Is it for an innocent reason or something else?
3. How does he feel about his exile and why/how it happened?
4. Could his lawful good nature have changed since his exile?
5. Assuming that the other gems in the bag were cursed (which they seem to be but I could be wrong), why was his uncursed despite him stating that he had been trapped long enough to not remember his name?
6. Since The Seven Maidens were able to toat around a generator for their crystals during their journey and expected another team to be able to do the same (with no mention of special requirements), could Van have lied about not having all the necessary equipment to make the party able to make calls? The van that Van is possessing was previously owned by passionate tinkerers who were very proficient in their craft after all.
7. Is The Hangman actually right about Van?
Also, last season the cast didn't trust Gorthalax for a while because he was a pit fiend. This season, they are trusting Van because he's an angel. Food for thought.
***
tl;dr: Van is a planetar who was exciled from the upper planes, innately knows when he hears a lie (which is an ability that doesn't require a spell), and hid that he knows when people are lying from the party. We know beings trapped in crystals can still interact to some degree with the outside world. Exiled angels can change alignment. If I'm right about the type of devil The Hangman was, he would have high insight and while his reaction could just be jealousy, it might also be an actual red flag.
