Rating: Teen and Up
Relationship: Dan Howell/Phil Lester
Summary:
Dan and Phil make a baby, but not exactly how they expected to.
Written for the Phandom Fic Fest Flash Fest: Trope Subversion
(gifting it to @alittledizzy and @queerofcups cause their work in the @phandomficfests inspired me to it all)
Dan woke up because of vomiting.
But not because of his vomiting, which made him sort of disappointed, in those first few seconds.
You may ask 'why the hell would he want to be sick?'.
Well, my friend, the thing was that Dan was trying to get pregnant.
They were 27 and 31 and it felt right. Their life was stable now, his mental health was better, they had good jobs, a good apartment, and they were more than excited to join the sweet and sour adventures of parenthood.
Except, making a baby was taking a bit of time.
Dan still hadn't had a heat since he stopped his birth control and heat suppressants, and he knew it took some time for his system to go back to normal.
But it was taking too long!
They were still having sex regularly, even though he knew it was difficult to get pregnant without a heat.
Difficult, but not impossible, something he would realize soon.
His brain stopped screaming about how useless, he was as an omega and he was finally able to ran into Phil, that was expelling their last night's takeaway on the toilet.
He sat on his thighs and pawed his mate's back.
"Are you okay babe?"
Phil puked for a few more seconds before nodding and getting up.
He rinsed his mouth and brushed his teeth, and then turned to Dan.
He was different now. Older. But beautiful as hell.
His hair was now pushed back as a gorgeous quiff, he was way more confident with himself and had a big role in a famous movie producer.
Dan was also different. Curly short hair, taller and stronger, also confident. An actor on Phil's producer.
If they looked at each other back then, two skinny boys in the beginning of their lives, but already together? It was a cute idea.
And now, they were going to have a baby.
When Dan's body started to work, obviously...
"Do you think I should go see a doctor?" Phil asked, a few moments later, pulling Dan back to reality. "I mean, it's been three days."
Yeah. Phil's nausea was pretty bad. See, with the whole lactose-intolerance-and-motion-sickness problems, Phil feeling nauseated, or throwing up was not something that demanded immediate medical assistance.
But the sickness had been there for three days. Going away and coming back, generally in the morning.
Dan was worried.
They cancelled the plans for the day and went to the hospital.
There was a nice NHS hospital next to their house that realized almost all of the exams needed in the same place.
So, they saw a doctor and Phil talked a bit about his nausea, and soon enough he was sent to take blood and make some ultrasounds.
Generally, Phil would hate coming to a hospital. He always had that silly idea that he was never ill enough to see a doctor, and that his huge backpack of medicine and google could cure any problem.
So, it was something impressive for Dan that he decided to come.
It made Dan think that it should be something serious which made him chew his nails for the whole waiting time between exams and diagnosis.
Phil was called into the doctor's office when Dan had almost chewed his thumb off.
Phil took some saline solution for dehydration, and now was looking less pale.
They sat together and Phil answered to a few questions from his doctor.
The first ones were normal. What usually made Phil nauseous, what had he eaten, what were his normal alimentation habits.
"Nowadays I'm eating way healthier. We're trying to conceive." Phil smiled.
The doctor then checked the exams. The weird questions began.
"When have you been signed as beta?"
"Uh... 16 I guess. The same age my brother were."
"And you never showed any... Weird sign before? Any hot flushes or abdominal pains?"
"Uh... No... Why?"
The doctor ignored Phil and asked again.
"You said you two are trying to conceive, have you two... Hmm... 'Switched places' in any of those times?"
It made Phil get completely blushed. Dan answered then.
"Yes, we did." Cause they had. It gets tiring to do things in a single way. They were always somewhat flexible. "But... Why is this relevant?"
The doctor looked at them, dead serious.
"Cause your case came here today as a beta with gastrointestinal pain, but by the exams, you're an omega with a gestational sac of 5 weeks."
There was silence in the room.
Dan really thought for a moment that, somehow, it was about Dan. Maybe the tests were somehow exchanged?
But it made no sense! Dan had not taken blood there, or an ultrasound... He was not pregnant.
Phil... Phil was.
It made them spend 5 more hours in the hospital. But it was true.
Phil was not the beta he always thought he was. He was an omega.
An omega that really never had presented or showed any sign of heats.
That was something that could happen, they explained.
Their society was changing to the point that most of the people were betas, and sometimes, because of evolution, alphas and omegas could live their whole lives without knowing they were from other sexes.
Generally, those people also had fertility problems, something that hadn't effected Phil, incredibly.
It was... Too much to comprehend.
It only hit them in the end of the night, when all of the exams were made again.
Phil was an omega and he was pregnant of another omega.
What the fuck was even happening?
They went back home and stood in silence for a while.
There was a pile of exams and a sonogram picture on the table.
Phil was the first one to talk.
"We are going to have a baby."
Yes. They were. Not how they expected, though.
Dan's belly was completely empty. He was not going to go through months of waiting, developing their kid inside him. Phil was.
And he was jealous. He... He always thought...
But it was not time to be jealous right now. Why was he jealous?
Phil was pregnant. They were going to have a baby, one way or another.
Jesus, they were going to have a baby.
"It explains all my weird obsession with pregnancy." Phil said, his voice sounding like he was about to cry. "Maybe deep inside I knew... I..."
He started crying, and Dan hugged him.
It was not the time for words. Everything was said and done. They just needed each other in that moment.
And when, later in bed, Phil pulled Dan's hand to rest on his still flat belly, Dan smiled.
Yeah, it did not erase his emotional turmoil, no. He would still need to talk about it to his therapist, to get a little introspective about the whole situation.
But, yeah... He could get used to that. With the image of Phil's belly expanding, carrying their child, their beautiful, loved and wanted child.
It was going to be ok.
"We're going to call her Susan."
"What? No! Shut up rat!" Dan laughed, kissed his lover's cheek and whispered. "You're the best omega an omega could want."

11 ways to start reversing type 2 diabetes today
by Dr Rangan Chatterjee / November 11, 2015
Whether you have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or or you’ve been told you’re at risk, read on for 11 ways to start reversing the effects immediately.
Type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. There are 3.9 million people living with diabetes – 90 per cent those of being affected by type 2 diabetes. Here’s another shocking statistic: 1 in 3 UK adults has prediabetes, the condition that precedes diabetes.
As you’ll soon see on BBC One’s Doctor in the House, it is entirely possible to both prevent as well as reverse type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, a lot of the advice that is given for the condition is, in my opinion, unhelpful and misguided. Most people think of it as a blood sugar problem but this is the ultimate effect rather than the cause.
WHAT IS TYPE 2 DIABETES?
Type 2 diabetes is a condition that is characterised by chronically elevated blood sugar levels. However, the main cause as well as the driver for this condition is something called Insulin Resistance. When you eat certain foods, particularly refined carbohydrates, that food is converted to sugar inside your body. Your body’s way of dealing with this sugar is to produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin moves the sugar inside your cells so that it can be used for energy. Sounds great, right?
Well, yes and no. When working efficiently, this is a fantastic system that helps your body to function well. But when you have type 2 diabetes, prediabetes or significant abdominal obesity, that system does not work so well.
Eating too many refined carbohydrates elevates your insulin levels for long periods of time and your cells start to become resistant to the effects of insulin. Think of this a bit like alcohol. When you start to drink, a single glass of wine can make you feel drunk. Once your body becomes accustomed to drinking, you need more and more alcohol to achieve the same effect. This is what happens in diabetes. You need more and more insulin to do the same thing. The problem is that too much insulin is toxic to the body.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF RAISED INSULIN LEVELS?
It causes water and salt retention, which causes raised blood pressure
You become at risk of atherosclerosis (“furring of arteries”), which can lead to heart attacks
Raised insulin levels increases VLDL (very low density lipoprotein), a type of blood fat and one of the “bad” forms of cholesterol
Can drive the growth of certain cancer cells
In women, it can cause the ovaries to produce more testosterone, which is associated with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Significantly increases your risk of getting type 2 diabetes
The only way to effectively reverse type 2 diabetes (or even pre-diabetes) is to deal with the underlying cause – Insulin Resistance. Trying to address the blood sugar levels (with medication) without addressing the insulin levels is treating the symptoms, not treating the root cause. It is similar to using a bucket to remove water from an overflowing sink rather than actually turning off the tap!
The most important thing to do is to stop adding fuel to the fire. If Insulin Resistance is driving the condition, you need to firstly stop consuming foods that increase insulin production. Secondly, you need to make some lifestyle changes so that you can become sensitive to insulin once again
SO, WHAT FOODS INCREASE INSULIN PRODUCTION
All carbohydrates – to some degree at least – will raise your blood insulin levels. That is why I consider type 2 diabetes a form of “carbohydrate intolerance”. Protein can also raise levels but to a much lesser degree. The only macronutrient that keeps your insulin levels and, therefore, your blood sugar stable is FAT! Therefore, if you are trying to reduce insulin levels, you need to reduce your amount of certain carbohydrates and replace them instead with healthy, natural fats.
What does that mean in terms of actual FOOD CHOICES though?
When I say healthy, natural fat – think nuts and seeds, avocados, omega 3 fats (found in almonds, flax seed and cold water fish, like wild salmon, herring, mackerel and tuna), extra virgin olive oil and whole eggs.
And when I talk about reducing certain carbohydrates, I mainly mean reducing your intake of refined carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and bread. Non starchy vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower) are fine and can be eaten in abundance. Many fruits are packed with carbohydrates, so if you’re trying to reduce your carb intake, try and limit your intake to low-carb fruit, such as rhubarb, watermelon, berries, peaches and blackberries.
It is really important to say that I do not believe that there is one perfect diet for everyone. Different people respond to different diets.
However, if you have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or if you have been told you are at high risk or if you have significant abdominal obesity, here are 11 ways to start reversing the effects immediately:
Avoid ALL refined carbohydrates. That means no pasta, rice or bread (even wholegrain bread will spike your insulin)
Avoid ALL added sugar. If your body is already in a state where you cannot process carbohydrates and sugars properly, you are going to have to take steps to fully eliminate all sugars, at least in the short term.
Avoid ALL sweet drinks. It is best to stick to water, tea, coffee.
Do not be scared of good quality, healthy, natural fat – avocados, olives, almonds etc. Don’t worry about this causing you to put on weight. A study published in 2003 showed that people who supplemented their diet with almonds lost more weight than those who supplemented with so-called “healthy, complex carbs”
Do not waste your energy counting calories. Concentrate on the quality of the food that you are eating and the calorie control will take care of itself.
FEED YOUR GUT BUGS, not just yourself. There are trillions of bugs that live in your gut – their health is critical in determining your health. Many studiesshow links between the state of your gut bugs (your microbiota) and type 2 diabetes. Start improving the health of your gut immediately by eating five servings of different coloured vegetables each day. The non digestible fibre in vegetables is the preferred food for your gut bacteria and when your gut bugs are happy, you will be happy. The wider the variety of colours, the more phytonutrients you will be getting.
Do my 5 minute kitchen workout once a day. This could be before breakfast, lunch or dinner – whatever works for you.
If you like to snack, keep some high fat healthy snacks with you, such as olives, nuts or hummus. When you snack on refined carbohydrates such as biscuits, you go on a blood sugar rollercoaster that results in you feeling hungry shortly after. Fats, on the other hand, will keep you fuller for longer.
Include high quality protein and fat with EVERY single meal. This helps to stabilise your blood sugars and promotes satiety and fullness, making it less likely that you will want to reach for dessert after your meal.
Eat your meals sitting down at a table. Eating on the sofa while watching TV encourages a mindless form of eating – this can lead you to eat higher quantities than you otherwise would. If you sit at a table and concentrate on what you’re eating, you are more likely to enjoy your food, feel satisfied at the end of your meal and eat less.
Consider a form of regular fasting (more to come in a later blog), such as intermittent fasting or time-restricted feeding (TRF). TRF means eating your calories during a specific window of the day, and choosing not to eat food for the rest. It’s a great way to reduce insulin levels in your body and help undo the effects of chronically elevated levels.
As always, I’m here to answer any questions, so please get in touch via Facebookand Twitter if you’d like to chat.

Gut Health Kit: What If You Could Reset Your Gut in Just 30 Days?
Tumblr media
"I was so bloated that I looked nine months pregnant," explains Andrea D., a school secretary from Madison, Wisconsin. "Anything I ate would come right back up, but I was still gaining unwanted weight." With pain rippling through her body, she struggled to sleep and function and had constipation, especially after eating carb-heavy foods. Exhausted from the roller coaster, Andrea consulted a gastroenterologist, desperate for answers.
After running tests, Andrea’s doctor told her the news: an imbalance of the bacteria in her gut was causing her symptoms. Seeking relief, Andrea went online to learn more about how her gut health was affecting her quality of life.
She first tried other probiotics and digestive enzymes without any change in how she felt. After doing more research online, Andrea found Global Healing’s Gut Health Kit™ and hoped it would stop her painful symptoms and restore her gastrointestinal balance — and she wasn’t let down. Just a couple of weeks into the 30-day program, Andrea was feeling less pain and experiencing more energy.
Andrea isn’t alone in her gut issues. A recent survey showed that 61 percent of Americans experience at least one gastrointestinal symptom — such as gas, bloating, heartburn, stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhea — every week.[1]Gut health is an essential — but often overlooked — aspect of your health and wellbeing.
Why Is Your Gut Health Important?
You have 100 trillion bacteria cells and other microorganisms in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract.[2] Called gut flora or microbiota, most of these organisms live in the large intestine where they help digest food and synthesize nutrients.[2]
These gut biota influence your immune system and even your mental health.[2] Your gut produces most of the serotonin (the "happy” hormone) in your body![3] Balancing your gut ecosystem can also help with weight loss for the stubborn pounds you can’t seem to shed.
Some signs and symptoms you may have an unhealthy gut include:
Constipation
Bloating and/or gas
Periodic feelings of anxiety and/or depression
Food sensitivities and intolerances
Acne or skin rashes
Occasional headaches
Sleep disturbances/insomnia
A weak or imbalanced immune system
Unintentional weight gain or loss
Any shift in the delicate balance of gut microorganisms can affect your health. Things that shift the balance may include a short-term illness, harmful organism overgrowth, stress, antibiotics, diet, and even aging. If you want to get any of these aspects of health back on track, you may just need to cleanse and heal the gut.
What Is the Gut Health Kit?
The Gut Health Kit is a maintenance program designed to reset and balance your gut over 30 days. In addition to gut-supporting supplements, it features easy-to-follow instructions and recommendations on what foods to eat and avoid in order to support the gut. The organic supplements work synergistically to cleanse, replenish, and soothe your digestive system. They support every aspect of gut health, your immune system, and total body wellness.
During the 30 day period, it's recommended that you should follow a plant-based, vegetarian diet — preferably vegan — that avoids common gut irritants; these foods include gluten, sugar, additives, and soy, among others. You can add in prebiotic and probiotic high-fiber foods that support the gut, such as beans, oatmeal, sauerkraut, jicama, garlic, flaxseed, and greens.
"Within a couple of weeks of using the kit, I noticed less bloating and less stomach pain," says Andrea. "My bowel movements became more regular. I followed the instructions in the kit and changed my eating habits by following the recommended diet, too. The Gut Health Kit guided me to a healthy lifestyle."
Let’s explore the health benefits of the ingredients in the supplements contained in The Gut Health Kit:
Aloe vera
With a history that extends back 6,000 years, Aloe vera has long been used as a therapeutic agent for balancing gut health.[4]Aloe has a gentle cleansing effect on the body by increasing water in the intestines and flushing out built-up waste.[5] Used as a remedy for occasional constipation, Aloe vera both soothes and cleanses the digestive tract.
Aloe Fuzion™ is a high-potency aloe vera supplement full of antioxidants and nutrients that soothe the gastrointestinal tract. Aloe Fuzion is aloin-free and does not contain the harsh outer leaf. Acemannan, the active ingredient, supports the immune system, soothes irritation, and encourages a healthy gut environment.
Probiotics
Probiotics are live gut microbes that are beneficial to your gastrointestinal health. They help you digest the food you eat, detoxify your system, and balance the gut.[6] Nearly 70 percent of your immune system resides in your gut. Probiotics can enhance your immune function by replenishing your gut’s supply of good bacteria, which helps you stay healthy.[7]
Floratrex™ contains live and active cultures from 25 unique probiotic strains that provide 75 billion CFUs (colony forming units). It also contains Saccharomyces boulardii, a fungal strain that supports healthy skin and digestion, and bacteriophages that target bad bacteria. This superior probiotic supplement helps ease digestion, supports the immune system, and promotes normal intestinal function.
Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in the foods you eat.[8] Symptoms such as gas, abdominal pain, constipation, and bloating may indicate you need more digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes have been reported to relieve various common gastrointestinal complaints.[9] They help your body digest and absorb the nutrients it needs. Enzymes also assist the body's normal regulation of inflammation.
Veganzyme® is a full-spectrum enzyme supplement that helps you digest fats, carbs, protein, lactose, and fiber. This enables you to get maximum nutritional value from the food you eat.
Oxygen-Based Colon Cleanser
By the age of 40, the average person may have 10 pounds of hard compacted fecal matter lodged in their intestinal tract. This can lead to discomfort and bloating. Oxygen-based colon cleansers release oxygen into the colon, and through the process of oxidation, dissolve accumulated waste build-up. This effectively detoxifies your intestines. The body then flushes them out through normal bowel movements, leaving you feeling lighter and less bloated.
Oxy-Powder® is Global Healing’s own tried and true formula that gently flushes toxins and compacted waste from your entire digestive tract. It’s been imitated but never replicated!
"My favorite supplement in the kit was the Oxy-Powder," explained Andrea. "When I would get bloated or backed up, it was comforting to know that it would help relieve me of my discomfort. The digestive enzymes really helped in breaking down the foods to help with digestion, too."
Does This Kit Improve Gut Health?
Does the Gut Health Kit work? In a word: yes. Reviews have been outstanding, including Andrea’s, a Global Healing customer who left a review on our website.
"My doctor had encouraged me to try other probiotics and enzymes, but those didn’t do anything to help me!" says Andrea. "It wasn’t until I began using the Gut Health Kit that my doctor and I noticed a significant improvement in my health. I brought the supplements in to show my doctor, and he approved, too. He was happy to see my results."
"Definitely recommend this product combo,” Andrea adds. "I tell so many people about it!"
Other Ways to Improve Gut Health
Supplements aren’t the only way to improve your gut health. While using any gut health protocol or cleanse, you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including habits that support gut health. While doing the cleanse, Andrea was inspired to clean up her diet to get the best results.
"I cut out all sugar, bread, alcohol, and dairy from my diet," says Andrea. "I ate as much organic food as possible and started to plan for and cook healthier meals." Along with drinking lemon and Aloe water daily, Andrea began exercising 3 to 4 times a week. "I was still feeling pretty tired at first, but after a couple of weeks, I started to feel my energy levels improve, my pain decreased, and I was much less bloated."
What Andrea discovered — and what we always encourage for anyone performing a cleanse — is in line with standard recommendations for improving your gastrointestinal health.
Exercise: Research shows that exercise diversifies the gut microbiome, which creates better balance. In other words, moderate exercise on a regular basis increases bacterial diversity in the gut.[10]
Reduce Stress: Stress can negatively impact your health, and research shows it can have an impact on your gut health, too.[11]Reduce stress by taking regular breathing breaks at work! On your off time, you can also meditate, do yoga, or engage in hobbies that make you laugh or help you relax.
Eat Fermented Foods: Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchee, nut-milk kefir, and kombucha are an excellent source of healthy bacteria that have proven health benefits.[12]
Points to Remember
In many ways, the diversity and complexity of your gut microbiota is as complex and as mysterious as the Universe. Sometimes factors in life cause an imbalance in the gut. When that happens, you may experience bloating, constipation, gas, headaches, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Balancing your gut environment, which means more healthy bacteria and fewer bad microbes, can even help with losing weight.
The Gut Health Kit provides all you need to restore balance to your gut microbiota and gut health. It includes a 30-day supply of Oxy-Powder, an oxygenated colon cleaner; VeganZyme, a superior blend of digestive and systemic enzymes; Aloe Fuzion; and Floratrex, an advanced 25-strain probiotic formula. When combined with eating a healthy, plant-based diet, you will see even better results!

Oat Bran Cereal- A Healthy Food You Should Eat Everyday
I will preface this article with the declaration that while there is no such thing as a superfood, there are some foods that are excellent recommendations for your daily diet, whether your goal is weight loss, maintaining a healthy weight or optimizing your health. Oat bran cereal is one of those foods and is an excellent addition to any diet, even for those on vegan and gluten free diets. Oat bran is not a very popular or even very well-known food, as most people are far more familiar with its close cousin, oatmeal. Which is a staple recommendation for weight loss and healthy diets. For decades in my own practice as a personal trainer in New York City, I recommended oatmeal as a first choice for breakfast for all my clients, and it proved itself time and time again in helping my clients maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day and as part of a dietary regime that has helped hundreds lose weight and keep it off. With a record like that, oatmeal is quite a tough act to follow, but I am always on the lookout for new and healthy additions to my own diet and that’s how I stumbled across oat bran cereal. One day I happened across a package of oat bran cereal and took a hard look at the nutritional profile. I was surprised by the fact that oat bran cereal was even higher in fiber, (almost twice as much), than oatmeal, whether it was rolled oats or steel cut oats. I added it immediately to my diet and was surprised that as much as I loved oatmeal, oat bran cereal filled me up more and I preferred the texture as well. Soon I had all my trainers eating it, then my clients. And more of my clients seem to prefer oat bran cereal over oatmeal and they report that it also keeps them fuller longer. Today, oat bran cereal is my recommended breakfast staple, and, in this article, we explore why oat bran cereal is better than oatmeal, how it works for weight loss and why you should be having it every day! Thanks as always for taking the time to read my work and do be sure to share this article with anyone who might find it to be of interest!

Oat bran cereal is one of the healthiest additions to your diet because of its high fiber content.
All oat products come from whole oats, which are a grain with a very hard outer shell that is indigestible. As such to derive any nutritional benefits from them, the outer hull must first be removed. When the hull is removed they are called oat groats, which comprise of oat bran, the endosperm and the germ. The outer layers of the oat groats form the bran and they must first be milled so that foreign materials are removed, and the groats are stabilized and isolated into a form suitable for cooking. [1] After being milled, there are several ways the oats can be processed, into steel cut oats, rolled oats or oat bran cereal. Steel cut oats are made by passing the groats through, (you guessed it!), steel cutters that slice the groats several times. Rolled oats are made by first steaming the groats and them pounding them flat with rollers. By making the flakes thick, you get regular oatmeal sometimes called, old fashioned oats. To make instant oatmeal, the oats are rolled thinner and steamed for a longer period, which cuts down the time needed to cook them, but unfortunately, also reduces the fiber content, which we shall see is one of the key benefits of any oat product. Oat bran is the course outer layer of the groats and has the most insoluble fiber content as it is the hull of the groats designed to protect the seed. [1] When this high fiber layer is ground we get oat bran cereal, which would naturally be higher in fiber than any other form of oatmeal.

Comparison of 1 oz. oat bran cereal vs oatmeal (rolled oats)
Today, avoiding wheat and products containing gluten is a bit of a trend, and there is an ever-growing demand for gluten free products. Gluten consumption must be avoided by those suffering from celiac disease, which is a well-defined medical condition. However, these cases make up a less than 1% of the world’s population. [19,20] On the other hand as many as 20-40% of adults who self-report food hypersensitivity in some studies blame gluten as a trigger of symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, joint or muscle pain and irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms.[21] Savvy marketing companies are also aware that the label “gluten free” increases consumers perception of the product being healthy, leading to increased sales and increased consumption, even though a food being gluten free has absolutely nothing to do with it being a reasonable addition to a healthy diet or not.
oat bran is 100% gluten free
Tumblr media
Uncontaminated oat bran cereal is 100% gluten free as oats do not contain prolamin (gluten) proteins.
That said and without going into the controversy surrounding gluten sensitivity, oat bran cereal, when obtained from uncontaminated sources is indeed gluten free, despite some misconceptions to the contrary. Cereals such as wheat, rye and barley contain proteins called prolamins, which is biological term for gluten, which can provoke negative symptoms in those with celiac disease. Gluten makes up as much as 80-85% of the protein content in wheat. In oats, however, the storage proteins are not prolamins but avenins, and make up only 10-15% of the protein profile. Avenins in oats are structurally different from prolamin proteins, [16, 17] and peer reviewed data has shown a low incidence of intolerances to oats.[17,18] So much so that oats are recommended as part of a gluten free diet to those suffering from celiac disease. [17,22] The European Union, then later the United States has allowed for oats to be labeled as gluten free as long as contamination from wheat, barley or rye is below 20 ppm.[17] Since oats are commonly grown, milled and processed alongside wheat and barley contamination often occurs, which could explain why early studies detected sensitivity issues among those with celiac disease consuming oats, but these findings were not repeated when controlled for the consumption of uncontaminated oats in normal quantities.[17] In the milling of regular oat products, manufacturing codes allow for as much as 2% “foreign objects.” [18] Thus, if gluten is an issue, it’s important to purchase oat bran labeled as gluten free and not “organic” as paying more for organic oats might not confer any real benefits. And only those labeled gluten free fall under the more stringent requirements for low gluten contamination levels.

Oat bran cereal can be an invaluable tool for those seeking to lose excess weight.
The Weight Loss Benefits From Eating Oat Bran Cereal
One of the most difficult aspects of weight loss is controlling your appetite. On an energy restricted diet, your body eventually responds with a set of neuroendocrine changes that make you want to eat more in an attempt to regain any weight lost and to make matters worse, your metabolic rate is lowered in order to make weight gain easier.[2] Your body has no idea that you are not in danger of starving to death and that you live in a time and place where food supply is superabundant, and so, as a result of our ancestral genetic coding, we are designed to conserve energy as much as possible when energy intake is reduced for any prolonged period of time.[2] This creates a huge physiological barrier to losing excess weight and a vicious circle of weight loss that leads to an increased appetite, and slower metabolism, which consequently leads to weight gain. A cycle that can not only be incredibly frustrating but also create a sense of personal failure, when the causes are simply organic in nature. Given the huge variety of food choices available to us, it is very difficult to resist the drive to eat even when your body isn’t in weight-regain-mode after weight loss. One countermeasure that works long term is to consume a diet of foods with very high satiety values. Which are foods that inhibit hunger and keep you full for long after eating it. [3] In many popular diets, high fat foods are used to control satiety, but this can come at a price, since fats are higher in calories than carbohydrates like oats. Fats are far more energy dense with 9 calories per gram as opposed to only 4 calories per gram in carbohydrates, and high fat foods can very easily be over consumed. As many of us can attest that it’s not that hard to eat more cheese, or peanut butter than you should, whereas no one is going to overdose on oat bran cereal anytime soon. Making it a better choice for avoiding overeating while delivering far less calories in the process.
Tumblr media
Oat bran cereal can help increase feelings of satiety and thus help you eat less.
How Oat Bran Cereal Helps Control Appetite
Under normal circumstances, the average meal takes two to five hours to empty from your stomach. Your meal then takes about three to six hours to go through the small intestine and then can stay in the colon for twelve to forty-eight hours. [4] Beta-glucan, the fiber found in oat bran cereals, is a viscous fiber, which means it absorbs large quantities of water and forms gels in the process. [23] These gels decrease the amount of time it takes for food to empty from the stomach and the bulk created from its water absorption can increase stomach distention. [5] Increased stomach distention may sound like a bad thing, but it isn’t. The term doesn’t mean your abdominal region pops out prominently like a beer belly, but refers to an internal process where the organ naturally expands. Stomach distension triggers signals of fullness, which makes you feel like you have eaten enough both during and after meals. Making the high fiber content in oat bran cereal an invaluable tool in appetite control.
You can think about the fiber in oat bran cereal as being like a sponge that absorbs water and expands. That expansion fills you up and makes you eat less!
The fiber in oat bran cereal has also been shown to decrease the rate of glucose absorption in the small intestine and slower glucose release means lowered insulin response. Which is another plus for appetite control as slow and steady glucose and insulin response is correlated with increased satiety.[6] As food moves through the gastrointestinal tract, your body naturally secretes various hormones, such as ghrelin, polypeptide YY and glucagon-like-peptide that send signals to the brain to make us feel satisfied with our meal and stop us from overeating. These hormones also control food intake and overall energy balance and the decreased food transit time from a meal high in oat bran fiber means that there is more time for these gut hormones to be secreted and thus making it more likely that we will not overeat.[7]
Tumblr media
Oat bran cereal- better than oatmeal and a healthy food you should have everyday
The Health Benefits Of Oat Bran Cereal
That oat bran cereal is one of the highest fiber foods that you can find makes it a great addition to a healthy diet and its particular fiber, beta-glucan has a range of beneficial health properties. In 1997, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted a health claim stating that a daily intake of just 3 grams of oat beta-glucan can lower the risk of coronary heart disease. [8, 9] Oat beta-glucan has also been demonstrated to reduce blood cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. [10,14] Oat bran also has potential anti-cancerous properties, as it reduces compounds in our bodies that are known causative agents of colon cancer. [11,12,13] From an athletic perspective, oat bran beta glucans have even been shown to increase endurance times and recovery after high intensity exercise better than other carbohydrate sources. [15] An important attribute not only for endurance type athletes, but also for those of us, like myself and my clients who engage in high intensity training protocols.
Oat bran cereal is also incredibly convenient. It’s lightweight and easy to carry and when I travel, all I need to do is add some water and I have a high fiber carbohydrate source. Some might think I am crazy, but when traveling and I am in a rush, I can even eat it plain, as it tastes that good! (But I will admit that my tastes are a bit on the shall we say eccentric side.) Now as wonderful as oat bran cereal might be, it is important not to fall into the panacea trap as no one food can make a poor diet a good one, nor can any one food magically make you lose weight of there isn’t an overall commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Oat bran cereal is only one of the many tools that you can use to help achieve your fitness goals, along with development of good eating habits, a strong exercise program and a diet of almost exclusively whole or minimally processed foods that promote satiety and lessen the likelihood of overeating. That said, oat bran cereal with milk, added sugar and salt defeats the purpose as a healthy food with unhealthy additives makes it just another junk food, and it’s critical to keep this in mind. No matter how much marketing might say otherwise. Plain oat bran cereal is an excellent dietary addition, but do be wary of any varieties with added sugars, as it will not have the same positive effects on appetite, and its health benefits might be compromised.

Man’s best friend has a reputation for being kind and accepting of everyone. But perhaps not everything. When it comes to food, dogs can be as intolerant as that narrow-minded uncle you dread spending Thanksgiving with. But with dogs it’s different. Sometimes a food intolerance can be an actual food allergy. But how to tell the difference? And does it matter?
“Both conditions can fall under a broad umbrella called ‘adverse food response’ or ‘adverse food reactions,’” says Camille Torres, DVM, DABVP-Canine/Feline, assistant professor of community practice and Purina Nutrition Program trainee with Colorado State University. “An event that stimulates an immunologic response is more likely to be considered a food allergy whereas a non-immunologic response is more likely to be considered a food sensitivity. Signs can be very similar in that both can lead to GI signs (gastrointestinal adverse food response); however an immunologic response may also lead to itchy skin, ears and paws (cutaneous adverse food response).”

Other veterinarians share some additional distinctions:
Allergies: “An allergy is a reaction (involving the immune system) to something in food, usually a protein,” according to Megan McGlinn, VMD, medical director of the ASPCA Animal Hospital in New York, New York.
“A food allergy causes an immune system reaction when the food is eaten, which can be severe or life-threatening, including anaphylaxis,” adds Judy Morgan DVM, CVA, CVCP, CVFT, of Naturally Healthy Pets, who is certified in food therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic care for dogs, cats and horses, based in Woodstown, New Jersey. “There is a histamine release that causes swelling, fluid build-up (edema), redness and may cause shortness of breath. Digestive symptoms may also occur, including vomiting and diarrhea. Itching and secondary yeast and bacterial skin infections can also occur.”
Food intolerance: “Intolerance is not a true allergic reaction and may show up with more digestive symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, belching and flatulence,” Dr. Morgan says. “Intolerance is generally caused by an inability to digest something well due to lack of appropriate enzymes or inflammatory bowel disease. Sensitivity to food additives such as dyes or preservatives can also cause food intolerance. In humans, lactose and gluten intolerance are the most commonly identified. Most dogs have lactose intolerance — fermented milk products work better because fermentation has broken down or digested the lactose.”
Myths and misconceptions
Along with using some terms incorrectly, many owners often believe things about food issues that are inaccurate. For starters, kibble may seem boring, but it is anything but basic. “Most of our pets are eating quite complex diets,” says Cailin Heinze, VMD, MS, DACVN, board-certified veterinary nutritionist, adjunct associate professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, based outside of Worcester, Massachusetts.
“The biggest myth/misconception is that a patient with food allergy or food intolerance will experience GI distress with vomiting and diarrhea when many times there are a variety of signs, with itching being the most common, especially for food allergy,” Dr. McGlinn reports.
What’s also common is the myth of grain allergies, which Dr. Torres specifically say are “uncommon.”
And grains aren’t the only ingredients that get unfairly blamed. “I have pet owners tell me their dog is allergic to all proteins and cannot eat any meats. That is genetically and physically almost impossible,” says Dr. Morgan, who Pet Age magazine named the 2018 Woman of the Year in the Pet Industry and the 2019 Pet Age Woman of Influence.  “Dogs are meant to eat meat proteins. Most dogs have a food intolerance and not a true allergy.”
That said, there are proteins that some dogs are allergic to. “It is the proteins in foods like beef, dairy and eggs that are amongst the most common food allergens, while foods that spark sensitivity can be amongst a broad spectrum and variable according to the particular patient,” Dr. McGlinn explains.
“Interestingly, most dermatologists commonly incriminate beef, but I find chicken to be a much bigger problem,” Dr. Morgan says. “Wheat, corn and soy can also cause problems for a lot of dogs.”
There is a possible cause-effect for people, even experts, believing certain proteins are to blame. “The most common allergens or animal products also reflect the diets that have been on the market at the time the studies were conducted,” says Dr. Heinze, who is also chief academic officer of the Mark Morris Institute and co-founder of Petfoodology. “So chicken, beef and eggs are very common in pet foods. There’s nothing inherent in those foods that causes allergies; it’s that there is such common exposure. I wouldn’t be surprised if five years from now you were to see pets allergic to the more unusual proteins.”
Then again, the proteins may not be the actual trigger. “Sometimes owners feed a processed food that includes a lot of ingredients, and the owner states the dog cannot eat whatever the main protein is in that food if the dog has digestive issues,” Dr. Morgan says. “In reality, it could be any ingredient in the bag, box or can and may very well be an intolerance to an additive, dye, preservative or minor player in the ingredient list.”
Dr. Heinze confirms cross contamination during processing may be the true source of the problem; you may have seen that warning on the package label on many food items for people.
So how to determine if your dog has actual allergies?
“Blood testing or skin prick allergy testing can be performed, but they are not 100% accurate,” Dr. Morgan says.
“An elimination diet can be used to identify adverse food reactions, but many times the underlying cause, whether it be food allergy or food intolerance, remains unknown,” Dr. McGlinn says. “Differentiating amongst the two will not only depend on results of the elimination diet, which takes compliance on the owner’s part, but also on patient history, time of onset to clinical signs, patient presentation and response to treatment.
In the meantime, Dr. Morgan says, “If there is a true allergic reaction including swelling of the face or ears, hives anywhere on the body, avoid that food! (This is actually not that common.)”
“People tend to jump on food issues first, but it’s actually one  of the less common causes,” Dr. Heinze agrees. “A lot of owners over diagnose food allergies, which means they eliminate foods they don’t need to.” And keep in mind that addressing those food issues might not be the only solution. “An immunologic adverse food response may require additional medications; diet alone may not control all of the signs,” Dr. Torres says.
Specific treatments, along with avoidance, include steroids and other immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine, says Dr. Morgan, adding, “Determining the cause and avoiding it is a much better solution than chronic administration of immunosuppressants. Adding digestive enzymes can help quite a bit for food intolerances to help with digestion of the food.”
Dr. McGlinn confirms finding a diet the allergic or food-sensitive patient can tolerate that will help stop clinical signs is key. “In addition, for food allergies there are a variety of medications such as antibiotics, antihistamines, antifungals, topical creams, ointments, sprays and shampoos that may also help treat the allergy and/or secondary infections and improve the patient’s overall health.”
And ultimately, it’s your dog’s health and well-being that can be affected. Dr. Morgan says with true allergies, “There is the risk of anaphylaxis and death (an overwhelming allergic reaction). Luckily, this is not that common.”
Dr. Heinze sums it up with, “These issues are not life-threatening but quality- of-life-threatening.”
They definitely cause for intervention. “Inflammation in the intestines can cause abdominal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhea; signs may worsen over time,” Dr. Torres warns. “Skin inflammation can lead to secondary bacterial and yeast infections that can be uncomfortable for the dog.”
When it comes to foods causing issues for your dog, it’s worth finding out if it’s an allergy or intolerance. Either way, there are solutions that can help your furry friend feel better. At least until Thanksgiving — and that decidedly un-woke uncle — come around.

Specific Breeds and Allergies
Food intolerances and allergies affect a variety of breeds, purebred as well as mixed breed dogs, says Camille Torres, DVM, DABVP-Canine/Feline. Others cited certain breeds as being more common patients.
“Top breeds associated with food allergies include Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Dalmatians, West Highland White Terriers, Bichon Frises, Collies, Chinese Shar-Peis, Lhasa Apsos, Dachshunds, Miniature Schnauzers, Boxers and Springer Spaniels,” says Megan McGlinn, VMD.
Age can be a factor, too. “Age at presentation is typically less than one year. A diagnosis of food allergy should be at the top of the list in a puppy or dog that has an onset of pruritus (itching) or other clinical signs prior to 6 months and after 6 years of age.” McGlinn adds that food intolerance has been seen in a wide variety of breeds at any age.
Cailin Heinze, VMD, MS, DACVN, board-certified veterinary nutritionist, adds Labs and Goldens tend to have more allergies “and there tends to be a genetic trait. Allergies can run in families. They may not be allergic to the same things but they inherit those immune systems.”
Finally, Judy Morgan DVM, CVA, CVCP, CVFT cites White American Bulldogs, English Bulldogs and all French Bulldogs as being allergy-prone breeds, as well.

Keto Bloat: Separating Fact from Fiction
Move over, keto crotch. There’s a new fear-mongering anti-keto media blitz forming: keto bloat.
According to the “good scientists” of the Kellogg company food lab, an unprecedented number of young people are walking around with bloated guts and colons packed to the brim with impacted fecal matter, and it’s all because they’ve embraced ketogenic diets and “forsaken” fiber.
If this sounds like nonsense, that’s because it is.
Are millions of keto dieters suffering from bloating and constipation? I can find no evidence of this.
Is fiber necessary to prevent bloating and constipation? It’s complicated. I’ll explain later. But probably not.
Does the ketogenic diet necessarily exclude fiber? Not at all.
Are ketogenic diets as commonly practiced low in fiber? No.
What Is “Bloat” Anyway?
There are two things that people refer to as bloat: constipation and abdominal distension.
Constipation has different components. It’s being unable to make a satisfying bowel movement. It’s also feeling like you have to poop but are unable to. It’s being able to poop only a little bit. It’s struggling on the toilet bowl. Mostly, it’s being unhappy with your performance on the toilet.
Abdominal distension also can be different things. It might be trapped gas. It might be feeling “heavy” or “full.” It might mean your pants don’t fit after eating.
So, “bloating” can be any or all of these. You can pass hard small stools and feel like you’re bloated. You can poop just fine but have a lot of gas and feel like you’re bloated. You can spend hours on the toilet with not much to show for your effort and be bloated. So “Keto bloat” is difficult to pin down. That makes it easy to make claims and hard to disprove.
Let’s see how frequent bloating and constipation occurs in the ketogenic diet literature.
What Does Research Say About Constipation?
In a study of children with epilepsy placed on an olive oil-based ketogenic diet, about 25% of the subjects experienced constipation. So, was ketosis slowing them down? Not exactly. Those who experienced constipation were actually less likely to be in ketosis. Constipation went up as ketone readings went down, and epilepsy symptoms returned. Constipation improved as ketone readings went up and epilepsy symptoms subsided.
In adults with epilepsy on a ketogenic diet, constipation occurred in just 9% of patients. The authors note that this rate is lower than some other ketogenic studies and attribute the difference to “the heavy focus on importance of fiber from nutrient dense (fiber rich) vegetables, nuts, and seeds.” Note that they weren’t getting fiber from pills and powders. They were eating nutrient-dense foods that just so happened to contain fiber.
Another ten-year study compared the classical ketogenic diet, MCT oil-based ketogenic diet, and modified Atkins keto diet. They were all equally effective at reducing epilepsy symptoms in children, but the occurrence of constipation varied greatly. It was most common in the classic keto diet and medium chain triglyceride-based diet, both of which restrict protein. In the modified Atkins diet, which does not restrict protein, constipation was much rarer. Another study on the modified Atkins diet had similar results, with just 2 of 26 subjects reporting constipation.
Constipation does seem to be a common occurrence. However, the majority of keto diet studies are in epileptic populations following very strict clinical Keto diets. The extreme nature of these therapeutic ketogenic diets—extreme protein (7% of calories) and carbohydrate restriction—makes them an imperfect representation of how most people are eating Keto. And in studies of less-extreme, more realistic versions of the diet, such as modified Atkins (which allows more protein) or the version with “heavy focus” on vegetables, nuts, and seeds, constipation occurs at a much lower rate.
What Does Research Say About Bloating?
The only instance of something approximating bloating in the ketogenic diet literature occurred in studies using medium chain triglyceride-based diets. These are ones that use huge amounts of MCT oil to increase production of ketone bodies. It works great for curbing epilepsy symptoms, but it can also cause cramping, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. That’s not bloating per se. It’s literally the closest I could find.
Causes Of Bloating While Keto?
Okay, say you are dealing with constipation or bloating on a keto diet. What could be going on?
Not Enough Food
Constipation is often a consequence of low energy status. Everything that happens in the body requires energy, and if energy levels are low or energy availability is poor, basic functions will suffer. Bowel movements are no exception. The muscles and other tissues responsible for moving things along your digestive tract use energy. If you aren’t providing adequate amounts of energy, you’re depriving your tissues of the ATP they need to work best and sending your body a signal of scarcity which will only depress energy expenditure even more.
Low carb diets in general and keto diets in particular are very good at causing inadvertent calorie reduction. Great for fat loss, but some people take it overboard and go too far. I’m talking 800-1000 calories a day on top of CrossFit. That’s a recipe for disaster.
Water and Mineral Loss
When you go Keto for the first time, you shed tons of water. For every gram of glycogen you lose, you drop 3-4 grams of water. You also lose sodium and potassium with the water, and you need extra magnesium to regulate your sodium and potassium levels.
The water content of stool is what gives it that smooth texture we all desire. If you’re dehydrated, even mildly, you’ll have less water available for your bowel movements and be more likely to suffer from constipation.
Drink a big glass of salty water with lemon juice in the morning and sip on salty broth throughout the day. Zucchini is a great source of potassium, as is avocado.
Also, if you’re going to eat more fiber, you need to increase water intake for it to work.
Too Much or Too Little Fiber
The relationship between fiber and constipation is mixed. Some interventions do seem to help. Psyllium husk and flaxseed have both been shown to improve constipation. Galactooligosaccharides, a class of prebiotic fiber, improve idiopathic constipation. And inulin, another prebiotic fiber, improves bowel function and stool consistency in patients with constipation.
But there’s also evidence that more fiber can make the problem worse. In one 2012 study, patients with idiopathic constipation—constipation without apparent physiological or physical causes—had to remove fiber entirely to get pooping again. Those who kept eating a bit or a lot of it continued to have trouble evacuating. The more fiber they ate, the worse their constipation (and bloating) remained. Another review found mixed evidence; some people get less bloating and constipation with more fiber, others get less bloating and constipation with less fiber.
Personally, my toilet performance is stellar with or without a constant intake of voluminous levels of plant matter. Most days I eat a good amount—Big Ass Salads, broccoli, sautéed greens, berries—but on the days I don’t, I don’t notice any difference. I’m suspicious of the widespread calls for bowel-rending levels of fiber as the universal panacea for all things toilet, and I’m also suspicious of the people who claim fiber is unnecessary or even harmful.
Fiber helps some people and hampers others. There’s no one-size-fits-all with fiber, especially since there are many different types of fiber.
Too Many Sugar Substitutes
I get it. There are some interesting candies out there that cater to the Keto set and use various sugar alcohols—non-alcoholic, low-or-no calorie versions of sugar—artificial sweeteners, and fibers to recreate popular treats. It’s fun to eat an entire chocolate bar that tastes pretty close to the real thing and get just a few net carbs. But that’s a lot of fermentable substrate your gut bugs are more than happy to turn to gas.
If you want the opposite problem, you can always turn to Haribo sugar-free gummy bears.
FODMAP Intolerance
FODMAPs stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols—the carbohydrates in plants that our gut bacteria usually mop up. Most people have gut biomes that can handle FODMAPs; indeed, most people derive beneficial short chain fatty acids from their fermentation. But some people’s gut biomes produce too much fermentation when they encounter FODMAPs. Fermentation begets hydrogen gas, which gathers in the gut and causes great distress. Common complaints of the FODMAP intolerant are bloating, stomach pain, and visits to the toilet that are either unproductive or way too productive—all of which fall into the bloating category.
The myth is that Keto people are eating salami and cream cheese for every meal. The reality is that many people go Primal or Keto and find they’re eating way more vegetables than they ever have before. These are great developments, usually, but if you’re intolerant of FODMAP fibers, you may worsen the bloating.
What Can You Do?
Eat enough protein. Most people can get away with eating 15-25% of their calories from protein and still stay in ketosis. Most people can eat even more protein and still get most of the benefits of fat-adaptation. The keto studies which had the lowest rates of constipation were far more tolerant of higher protein intakes.
Eat FODMAPs unless you’re intolerant. Most people can eat FODMAPs. In most people, FODMAPs improve gut health and reduce constipation and bloating. But if your gut blows up after a few bites of broccoli or asparagus, consult the FODMAPs list and try a quick FODMAP elimination diet.
Make sure you’re truly constipated. Your stool volume and frequency of toilet visits will decline on a normal ketogenic diet because there’s less “waste.” Make sure you’re not misinterpreting that as constipation or bloating. If there’s less poop, there’s less poop. If there’s more poop but it’s just not coming, and you have to go but can’t, that’s when you have an issue.
Experiment with fiber. Fiber clearly has a relationship to bloating and constipation. You just have to figure out what that looks like in your diet.
If you’re bloated and constipated on a high-plant Keto Diet, eat fewer plants.
If you’re bloated and constipated on a low-plant Keto Diet, try eating more plants. If that doesn’t help, go zero-plant.
If you’re bloated and constipated on a zero-plant Keto Diet, try eating more plants. .
We all have to find our sweet spot.
So, to sum up, “keto bloat” is mostly a myth. There’s a glimmer of truth there, but it’s highly exaggerated. Constipation is common on the most restrictive clinical keto diets, while eating fiber from whole plant foods, being less restrictive with protein, and making sure you’re drinking enough water and eating enough calories and electrolytes seems to avoid the worst of it.

Natural Rx: Alternative Treatments for IBD, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease
Before we get into ways to naturally help colitis, IBD and Crohn's, I would like to emphasize that these can be a VERY serious (life threatening in some situations) conditions. Please, please work in tandem with your physician or medical professional and don't hesitate to seek proper medical care!
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a medical condition that causes the walls of the intestines and digestive tract to become swollen and inflamed.
When nothing is done to correct this condition for a long period of time, then ulcers can begin to develop. Ulcers bring with them a whole host of additional problems including pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, bloody stools, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss or a fever.
The Two Most Common Forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD commonly comes in two forms – ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. The symptoms of these two disorders can seem much the same and it can be really difficult for the doctor to ascertain a correct diagnosis. In addition, inflammatory bowel disease is often misdiagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Other inflammatory bowel diseases include collagenous colitis, lymphocytic colitis, and diversion colitis.
The Difference Between Colitis and Crohn's Disease
In Crohn's disease, there are healthy parts of the intestine mixed in between inflamed areas. Ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, is continuous inflammation of the colon. Ulcerative colitis only affects the inner most lining of the colon while Crohn's disease can occur in all the layers of the bowel walls.
The Causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
There has been no exact reason identified for why IBD occurs, although here has been a lot of research into factors that could make a person more likely to develop it. As you probably know, a damaged or weakened immune system makes it easy for infections to spread.
But for people with inflammatory bowel disease, the immune system actually overreacts to something in the digestive system and causes ongoing inflammation, ulcers, and other problems.
Medical researches believe that a virus or bacterium may be what causes the immune system to react this way. If someone in your family has suffered with inflammatory bowel disease then there is a high probability that you will also.
Women are more likely to develop IBD where genetic ties are concerned, while individual of Jewish descent carry this special gene which means they are much more likely to develop IBD than most other people.
Having a lifestyle where you are not physically active, being in a higher socioeconomic bracket or living in a developed country are all factors which make it more likely that you will suffer with inflammatory bowel disease at some point in your life. Cigarettes, stress and some types of food can also contribute to it.
Tips for Preventing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
*  Eat a high-fiber diet of whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, fruit, vegetables, dried fruit and nuts (NOTE: Some individuals find that wheat products worsen their symptoms). * Include protein such as lean meats and fish in your diet to relieve symptoms of IBD. * Try to eat small, frequent meals – even during a flare-up. * Regular exercise helps to reduce stiffness, maintain joint motion, and strengthen the muscles around the joints. * Drink a lot of fluid and at least 8-10 glasses of water every day to help keep the body hydrated and also to help prevent constipation. * Stay away from foods containing lactose if you are lactose intolerant. * Curb your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as these may aggravate symptoms. * Increase your intake of multivitamins and fish oil capsules to replace nutrients lost via malabsorption problems caused by IBD. * Limit gas-producing foods such as onions, dried peas and lentils, chives, broccoli, and carbonated drinks. * Practice deep breathing exercises to encourage motion of the ribs. * Stop smoking in a natural manner, as smoking has been known to worsen this condition.
What is Colitis?
Colitis, an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD),  is the acute or chronic inflammation of the membrane lining of the colon (large intestine or bowel) and can have many different causes. Colitis is also the commonly used short name for ulcerative colitis, a condition which causes both inflammation and ulcers in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine.
When inflammation occurs, the colon empties itself, frequently resulting in diarrhea. In areas where the inflammation has resulted in the death of the colon lining cells, ulcers may develop which can produce pus and mucus, or may also bleed.
Those with inflammatory bowel disease also tend to experience eye problems, joint problems, neck or lower back pain, as well as skin changes.
The Symptoms of Colitis, IBD
The symptoms of IBD can vary widely depending on the specific type of colitis and its cause. These may include:
Pain
Lower abdominal discomfort or cramps
Spasms
Abdominal tenderness
Diarrhea

Common Treatments of IBD, Colitis
For more serious episodes of colitis, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, or steroids may be prescribed. However, these prescription medications may also come with other side effects. As your symptoms improve, eat low-fiber foods and avoid dairy products and greasy foods for a few days.
Often severe attacks of inflammatory bowel disease such as colitis require hospital admission and supportive care which includes bowel rest, IV fluids, and correction of any electrolyte imbalance. Surgery may also be required and can involve the removal of the affected portion of colon and bowel, but this is usually a last resort.
Making strict changes to diet will help ease symptoms and a food diary will enable the identification of foods that seem to worsen or trigger symptoms. People with chronic colitis may need psychotherapy, counseling, and education.

Reflexology Treatment for IBD
Tools Needed: The great thing about reflexology is all that you really need is your own hands. However, if you would like to use any reflex massage tools or crystal massage wands, that is also perfectly fine! How To: The most important thing to remember when giving a reflex treatment is to relax. Take a few deep breaths before starting, wear comfortable clothing, get in a comfortable position. You could give yourself a warm foot or hand bath prior to treatment and/or massage both of your feet or hands with a good lotion to help relax you before starting.
Reflexology Massage

When we use reflexology massage to help a specific ailment or complaint, we have a very systematic approach to what reflexes should be massaged and why.
The specific areas or organs directly affected
Upper lymphatics to help reduce swelling and inflammation and help combat infection
The general area of the problem
Adrenal glands for powerful anti-inflammatory effect (if  necessary)
Specific secondary organs or systems affected
Before Beginning
Massage the entire foot slowly but firmly to loosen it up, beginning at the toes and moving down towards the heel for about 30 seconds
Using both hands, hold onto the spine area with the palm of the hands – fingers on top of the foot and thumbs on bottom of the foot. Slowly and gently twist/wring the hands away from each other in order to gently twist the spine area on the foot. This is a relaxation exercise. Loosely wring one way and the other for approximately 30 seconds total.
Reflex Points to Massage for IBD
Foot/Hand – small intestine (14), ascending colon (17), transverse colon (19), descending colon (21), rectum (68), lymph glands (37, 41, 59, 63), adrenal glands (7), parathyroid glands (41)

Reflexology Contraindications:
Any contagious skin disease ie. impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, mumps etc.
Severe psoriasis or eczema on foot (foot will be too sore to work)
Any untreated severe medical condition, or acute pain (Reflexology may hide a condition which needs medical attention)
Anyone under influence of alcohol or recreational drugs
Internal bleeding
Severe varicose veins i.e. phlebitis (Reflexology may increase pressure of blood to veins)
Bruising on feet
Cuts, grazes, open skin, rashes, bites, burns, fractures
First few days of menstruation (Reflexology may make period heavier)
Immediately after a heavy meal – wait not less than 2 hours
Athletes foot or verruaes
Localized swelling/inflammation
Scar tissue (2 years for major operation, and 6 months small scar)
Sunburn
Hormonal implants
Recent fractures (minimum 3 months)
Cervical spondylitis
Hematoma
For women in early pregnancy (the first 6 weeks), the reflexology session is altered by treating the uterine and ovarian reflex points more gently or by avoiding them altogether. In general, caution should be exercised during pregnancy because of reports that stimulation may cause contractions.
What to Expect
Effects immediately following the treatment can vary from feelings of being deeply relaxed to very energetic. You may notice increased thirst or hunger or needing to go to the bathroom more often. These are all signs that the body’s own healing mechanism has been activated.
After any reflexology massage, please be sure to drink plenty of water (ideally at least 8 glasses in 24 hours), to help flush toxins from your body. It is also recommended you avoid alcohol and eat only light meals.

Combining the Therapies (ReflexAromatherapy for Colitis and IBD)
There are many ways to combine the healing effects of reflexology and aromatherapy, and I have to say that my best advice is to experiment. Every person is an individual and every complaint is unique in some way. Try different things and then stick with what worked best.
That being said, there are three methods I would encourage you to try:
Massage oil or blend with the side of your thumb or reflex tool directly on the corresponding reflex point on the feet or hands. Use a press and circle motion for 10-20 seconds per point.
Use an appropriate oil blend and apply it to the feet or hands immediately before massaging the reflex points. You can also mix a few drops of the blend in with your favorite unscented lotion to use in between reflex treatments and during the ‘relaxation' phase before a reflex treatment.
Diffuse an appropriate oil blend as you work the reflex points for your complaint or condition.

Color Therapy for Colitis, IBD
Blue: Inflammation – Treat with blue generally and locally.
Yellow: Abdominal Cramping, Digestive Issues, Diverticulitis.
Yellow/Orange: Bowels – For constipation, use yellow for ten minutes. For diarrhea, use blue or green. A glass of solarized water a day is indicated until the condition is under control. Diet should be looked into. Spleen – Treat with yellow over spleen area for half hour.
Red: Endocrine Glands – Treat with red at the base of the spine. Circulation – Treat with red light to stimulate circulation.
Purple: Flatulence – Treat with purple light over the abdomen for 15 minutes; solarized water should be taken every day.
How to Make Solarized Color Water
This is a simple and cheap way of applying color to the body. Water, when exposed to sunlight in a colored container for at least an hour become irradiated and takes on some of the vibrational energy of that particular color. This is called solarized water.
Special colored containers can be bought, but they can easily be improvised using colored cellophane. Simply drink (solarized water should always be sipped)  this water at regular intervals throughout the day.
A red vessel will give red solarized water; a blue vessel, blue solarized water, etc. The longer the water remains exposed to the sun, the stronger is its potency. Solarization depends on temperature, geographical location and the time of the day.
One simple way to determine if the water has absorbed the sun's energy is to drop an ice cube in the glass of water to be solarized. When the ice cube has completely melted, the water is charged. Obviously, it will take more time in winter as opposed to in summer.

A Note on Supplements: A good friend of mine had battled colitis for nearly a year when her naturopath put her on three simple supplements: Omega-3, Probiotic and a mucosal supplement with L-glutamine as the main ingredient. She called it the “Gut Healing Trio”.  She began taking the Trio in early July 2015 and has been completely symptom-free since October 2015.
Gut Healing Trio dosage for ACTIVE colitis/IBD:
Omega 3 – 1 x 400 mg EPA. 200 mg DHA (together in 1 gelcap) 3 times a day (Refrigerate)
Probiotic – 1 x 10 billion cfu 3 times a day (HMF Forte Probiotic is what was recommended) (Refrigerate)
Mucosal Supplement – 2 capsules twice daily (Here is the one she took – check ingredients and I'm sure you can find one very similar. The L-glutamine is the most important ingredient.)
Food as Medicine:
Both ulcerative colitis and crohn's disease can be managed effectively and even reversed in the early stages by adopting a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle. Avoiding the rich Western diet and eating a high-fiber diet consisting of whole, plant-based foods restores the imbalance of protective and harmful bacteria in the gut, which is a major cause of both of these conditions.
A 2010 study showed 100 percent of study participants eating a semi-vegetarian diet (including small amounts of eggs, milk, and fish) achieved complete remission of crohn's after one year and 92 percent remained in remission after two years. (1)

Why Does Your Stomach Growl When You Are Hungry? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Your body lets you know every day, in a variety of ways, that it is alive and well. One such way is the familiar growl of your stomach, which, to most of us, signals hunger. But, are all those rumbles and noises actually coming from your stomach? Are they really a sign you need to eat? The answer to both questions is a resounding “No.” I’ll take this opportunity to remind you about what’s really going on when you feel and hear a rumble in your belly. Is All That Noise Coming From Your Stomach? You may not realize stomach growling actually originates as muscular activity in both your stomach and your small intestine. To better understand what causes it, let’s take a closer look at how your body digests the foods and beverages you consume. As you probably know, one of the primary components of your digestive system is a long hollow tube called the esophagus, which runs from the back of your mouth all the way to your anus. Your esophagus connects with all of your various organs along your gastrointestinal tract, such as your gallbladder, liver, pancreas and stomach, as well as your small and large intestines (also referred to as your bowels). The walls of your esophagus are primarily composed of layers of smooth muscle, which are squeezed and contracted as a means of digesting and propelling food through your body. This process is called peristalsis. As peristalsis does its work, the food and beverages you consume are steadily being moved along from your stomach to your anus. Along the way, they are being mixed with a variety of digestive juices. These juices help your body transform liquids and solids into a gooey mixture known as chyme. Now, this is where the growling noises factor into the process. The funny noises and rumbling sounds you experience are not hunger pangs; they are caused by pockets of trapped air and gasses that are compressed as your body churns food particles and chyme through your digestive system. Typically, stomach growling is no cause for concern. About stomach growling, the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders says:1 “Whether audible or not, bowel sounds in the absence of other significant symptoms are normal phenomena of no medical significance. Their harm is embarrassment, a social, rather than a medical affliction.” Why Does My Body Growl Within Hours of Eating? You may be surprised to know that growling sounds can happen at any time — not just when you're hungry or when your digestive system is relatively empty. Sometimes the noises are less noticeable because the presence of food in your body can help somewhat to muffle their sound, as well as lessen their intensity. Because digestion is an ongoing process, your stomach sends signals to your brain approximately two hours after you eat to start up the peristalsis contractions again. As reported by Scientific American, professor Mark Andrews, a specialist in physiology and biophysics at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, explains what happens next, noting that these contractions generally subside after you eat: 2 Receptors in the walls of your stomach sense the absence of food, triggering electrical activity in the form of a reflex generation of waves known as migrating myoelectric complexes (MMCs) Hunger contractions result as MMCs travel from the lower region of your stomach, through your small intestine and into your colon This process not only cleans up any bacteria, food or mucus that may have been missed earlier, but also initiates the process to make you hungry for your next meal Those contractions, which may continue for 10 to 20 minutes and repeat every one to two hours until your next meal, produce vibrations and the rumbling noise commonly associated with stomach growling Hyperactive Bowel Sounds Could Signal a Need for Medical Attention If you have ever experienced diarrhea, you are already familiar with what is meant by hyperactive bowel sounds. As a refresher, hyperactive bowel sounds are characterized by the combination of: Peristalsis of your intestines Higher levels of fluid and gas Amplified sounds of watery stools Various malabsorption states can also result in exaggerated bowel sounds. Two of the main ones that receive considerable attention are:3 • Lactose intolerance: This condition is characterized by your body’s lack of a sufficient level of the enzyme needed to digest lactose in your small intestine. As such, milk sugar will reach your colon intact where it will be fermented by colon bacteria. Those microbes release hydrogen and other products that attract fluids and stimulate gut contractions, which will intensify any abdominal sounds. • Celiac disease: This illness results from your body’s inability to process gluten, which is a major protein found in barley, rye and wheat. Primarily characterized by inflammation of the mucosa in your small intestines, celiac disease also causes your intestinal villi to atrophy. Villi are the finger-like projections lining the walls of your small intestine that help your body absorb nutrients. When your villi flatten, you may suffer from serious nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption. Diarrhea and muscle wasting are other possible side effects of celiac disease. A Bowel Obstruction Is Not Only Noisy but Can Also Be Life-Threatening According to Healthline,4 a very serious instance involving hyperactive bowel sounds takes place when you have an intestinal obstruction. Obstructions can be partial or total, preventing the passage of food and liquids. They are characterized by increased contractions that attempt to force air, liquids and solids through a narrowing of your intestine. As such, obstructions produce unusually loud, often high-pitched, sounds. Those sounds are caused by the buildup of food, fluids, gas and gastric acids behind the site of the blockage. Most obstructions are characterized by symptoms such as abdominal swelling, constipation, nausea and vomiting. Intestinal blockages are considered to be an emergency situation because your intestine could rupture under such intense pressure, causing harmful bacteria and waste products to leak into your abdominal cavity. Given that it is a life-threatening illness that cannot be prevented, immediate diagnosis and treatment of an intestinal blockage is crucial to your survival. Should You Be Concerned if Your Intestines Are Totally Silent? There are a few situations in which it is normal for your intestines to be quiet, including: During sleep At certain times of the day Following abdominal surgery That said, a complete absence of intestinal sounds that occurs during an attack of severe abdominal pain could be an indication of a serious intra-abdominal event.5 If so, you should treat it as an emergency — one that may require surgery — and get to your nearest hospital immediately. How to Tell if Your Body’s Growling Noises Are Normal Unless the sounds your stomach and small intestine are making are accompanied by diarrhea, abdominal pain or other symptoms, they are probably normal. That said, it is also important to note stomach rumbling is different from, and unrelated to, other gassy phenomena such as belching, bloating and flatulence. While any, or all, of these may occur in the same person, they are causally unrelated. If you feel your bowel sounds are abnormally loud or if they are causing you anxiety or embarrassment, be sure to discuss your concerns with your doctor. Optimize Your Gut Microbiome to Prevent Intestinal Problems While there is nothing you can or need to do to curtail your body’s digestive noises, you can take proactive steps to prevent a more serious intestinal issue. By far, your best defense against intestinal problems is to optimize your gut microbiome. One of the best and least expensive ways to do so is to begin by eliminating sugar and processed foods from your diet, while adding a variety of fermented foods. The beneficial bacteria in fermented foods will aid your digestion and provide detoxification support. Consuming a variety of fermented foods and beverages is important because each food will inoculate your gut with a mix of different microorganisms. As such, your digestive tract will be stronger and more resilient against bacteria and other toxic invaders. Fortunately, with a little time and effort, you can cultivate fermented foods at home. While there are several options, two of the easiest and most popular types are: Cultured dairy, such as yogurt, kefir and sour cream Cultured vegetables, including pureed baby foods For step-by-step instructions on how to ferment vegetables, check out my video below. While you can purchase these items in a grocery store, you will get a higher-quality product by culturing your own. Making your fermented foods and beverages at home also gives you total control and knowledge of the ingredients contained in each one. Probiotics Support the Growth of Your Gut’s ‘Good Bacteria’ If, for whatever reason, fermented foods are not an option for you, consider taking a daily probiotic supplement. Probiotics are supplements designed to increase your beneficial bacteria, the largest concentration of which is found in your gut. By supporting the health-promoting bacteria in your body, probiotics help keep harmful microbes in check. If you recently have taken or currently are taking an antibiotic, be sure to also take a probiotic to repopulate your gut with healthy bacteria. This is necessary because most antibiotics kill not only the target organism that might be causing your infection (which is a good thing), but also your beneficial bacteria. Keep in mind that many prescribed antibiotics are unnecessary and may inflict more harm than good. As such, I recommend you carefully weigh your options before taking them. Given the risks of antibiotic resistance, be selective and, if possible, restrict antibiotic use to only the medical situations that mandate the use of them. Learn more about the value and use of probiotics through my interview with Greg Leyer, chief scientific officer of UAS Laboratories, a probiotic-dedicated manufacturer. Take One Step Today to Address Your Digestive Health For sure, your body will continue to make growling noises.
