In 2014, the Australian firm AMP Capital launched a bold and bizarre call to action to the architectural community of Sydney—replace their skyscraper headquarters without demolishing it.

They wanted their AMP Center, the once-tallest building in Sydney, to become the world’s first “upcycled skyscraper,” and the results were truly inspirational.

By grating a second tower onto the existing core of the AMP Center and not demolishing it, 12,000 tons of CO2 were saved which would have otherwise been created through the use of heavy machinery and the loss of carbon captured in the cement. 12,000 tons is equal to 3 years of the 49-story tower’s maximum energy consumption.

Built in the 1970s, the AMP Center wasn’t necessarily on its last legs, but wasn’t viable for the company any longer. But the firm was unwilling to commit to the massive costs of carbon and money when another option was available.

First though, sufficiently bold architects were needed for the project. Three firms teamed up, led by Danish architects 3XN, an Engineering company called Arup, and the Australian architects BVN.

“The tower was coming to the end of the end of its life, in terms of viability… but the structure and the ‘bones’ can actually last a lot longer,” said Fred Holt from 3XN in a video interview. “You can’t always retain everything. But if you can retain the structure—and that’s where the majority of your embodied carbon is—then you’re lowering your footprint.”

At first it was unclear how much of the original structure would be saved. Beginning on the project, the team realized the original tower was actually about 4 meters shorter than the original drawings suggested.

They installed hundreds of sensors to track the tiniest of movements to ensure that by aligning their new construction with the old one, there wouldn’t be any surprises waiting for them at key moments.

In short, the build was a huge success, and the architects boast that walking from the new construction into the old tower is an unnoticeable transition.

Five stacked units with sharp points twist up toward the sky, while an envelope covers both the new extension and the old tower such that no one could tell the difference. Office space was expanded from 4,500 to 9,000 personnel, and the lack of demolition saved AMP around AUD$150 million.

The Quay Quarter Tower, as it’s called, won World Building of the Year upon its opening late in 2022. 3XN hopes it serves as a case study for the future potential in upcycling towers.

I think about Owen and the Chimera surveillance network a lot, because to me it isn't a question of having a surveillance network or not. It is happening. The question is: who will control it?

The surveillance network is an arms race between Chimera, the U.S. government, and I would imagine also the Russians and the British as well. One of these entities *will* succeed, Chimera is just the furthest along. Its like the race for the atomic bomb- each superpower pursued its own nuclear weapons program simultaneously, the US (collaborating with the British) just crossed the finish line first.

Here's my argument.

The first crucial piece of the puzzle is Barb Larvernor. The first time we hear about the concept of computers making spies obsolete, it isn't from DMA/Owen. It's from Barb. In A1P5, Barb says:

"Well picture this- the world's first, large-scale, information collective and archival system... Its just an idea I've been toying around with. If it worked, we'd be able to take down syndicates by doing the detective work from the safety of our desks. It would take the guesswork out of your job, hopefully saving some lives in the process- including your own. Can you imagine if this technology existed?"

There's also this conversation between Barb and Tatiana from the interludes during One Step Ahead.

Tatiana: I need you to search for an island, the size of a compound, that can store hundreds of computing systems

Barb: Easy, I have actually already been researching locations that fit that exact criteria... see, I have been thinking of a technology that can revolutionize- found one!"

From these two exchanges, we know that at the very least Barb is working on this "information collective and archival system" for the US government to use, although she seems to still be in the research and development phase.

Now, let's move on to what we know about Chimera's system, and what Owen wants from it.

First, we have this dialogue from A1P8, of DMA outright telling Curt his plan:

Curt: where did that come from?

BVN: a little birdie told me

DMA: that little birdie being an advanced network of information surveillance that we've been-

Curt: boring!

Then, from A2P5, we have Owen explaining the system and why he wants to control it:

Tatiana: bird? Little birdies? His scientists developing... you're after the technology

Owen: Pop goes the weasel! An advanced Nazi information surveillance network to collect and archive state secrets.

They discuss why Owen wants the land (silicon babyyy), and then:

Owen: Don't you get it? Those stores of silicon from beneath the Earth's crust will allow us to mass produce Von Nazi's technology and deploy his system on a global scale! I'd have all the world's secrets. I'd be God. Now what a world that would be, eh?

The conversation continues:

Curt: my government will never allow this

Tatiana: not even the Soviets will

Owen: not at first, no. Everybody likes to do the watching, but nobody likes to be watched

Tatiana: you can't just invade the privacy of civilians without reason or suspicion

Owen: well, I like to think we are just turning everyone into a spy, they just aren't aware of it

Moving on to A2P6, the staircase scene:

Owen: YOU STILL DON'T SEE, DO YOU, CURT? There won't be any agency to go back to, once the system is global. I'm going to single-handedly dismantle everything you've ever believed in

Then

Owen: the future is happening, Curt. And it's not going to wait for you. What use will one man be, when a box in a room can do his job in seconds, huh?

Curt: sounds boring

Owen: you're a caveman, and I've invented fire

To me, this absolutely reads as Owen being aware that somebody- be it Chimera, or the US, or the Russians- will have this surveillance network. The future is inevitable. The future is surveillance (he was soooo right), the future is computers. Curt just can't see it yet, because he doesn't know technology the way that Owen and Barb do.

Going back to "I'd have all the world's secrets. I'd be God." Makes me believe that Owen is doing this so that *he* will control the flow of information. That he will be able to protect himself against what is coming. That he will never have to be vulnerable to his secret again.

Because here's the thing: we don't know if Chimera is going to use this information to punish or harm queer people. Given that Owen believes he will be in charge of the surveillance system, I'd say at the very least he does not believe it will be.

His goal seems to be "a world without agencies, a world without spies, a world without secrets." It seems to be the destruction of spying as an institution, and undercutting the nations which make use of spies to influence global events. At no point does he say that he will expose queer people if he is in charge of the surveillance network.

But, the US government absolutely will.

The US government is already hunting down queer people, even without a fancy surveillance network. Having control over Chimera's network would only make that task easier for them. Curt's secret, the secret of any queer person in this time period, is almost certainly safer in the hands of a gay man than it would be in the hands of a bloodthirsty global superpower that is already hunting down queer people.

Finally, at the end of the show, after Cynthia says that pretty soon nerds in lab coats will be running the show, we find out that Barb is getting the resources to fully work on the technology she has been talking about the entire show:

When Curt killed Owen he did not kill the surveillance network. Not for Chimera. But also, by handing A.S.S. evidence of what Chimera was doing, he likely influenced the US government to fund Barb and make her surveillance system a reality. A surveillance system that will invariably be used to hurt people like Curt and Owen.

Its possible that Curt never takes down Chimera precisely because the US now has a surveillance system to tell them that their ex-agent, the agent who went rogue, is also gay. And I don't imagine they would be very Gay Rights about it.

From a real world perspective, Owen and Barb were right: surveillance technology was the future in 1961. It is the present we currently live in. Warrantless, invasive, built into every piece of tech we use. The future happened, and it didn't wait for Agent Curt Mega.

A happy good day to you Easter Bunnies! I apologise for being gone for so many days but I was away in RL and enjoying the fruits (both forbidden and approved 5-a-day varieties) of Thom’s labour.

I’m not going to talk about the night I drank more than I should have and ended up ralphing into the big white telephone. Promise.

I am home now and happy to be back to the grindstone blogging wise. It’s a Bank Holiday Monday here and it’s capitalised for a good reason. A Monday, when you don’t have to work? Well, that’s the very definition of bliss.

I have two teensy tiny movie reviews for you…

Criminal – Great cast including a lobotomised Kevin Costner take us on a crazy, violent journey which makes you go awww, so nice in the end. Fabby soundtrack. Meri gives 7/10 for entertainment value.

Split – James McAvoy stars with aplomb as almost the entire cast with the help of a lovely doll-faced girl-child/woman. Disturbing and fascinating in equal measure, you might forget to blink. A well deserved 9/10 from Meri.

Collabor88 was super this round. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We have the wonderful Blueberry with her Caiti Lingerie set, which I feel is adaptable for many circumstances including but not limited to drinking beer around a camp fire. You can grab it in a mesh body size to suit you (probably) and in a wide range of colours. S’nice.

I also grabbed Pr!tty’s new hair – Brea and Pure Poison’s Illy Sandals. I love Pure Poison, you get a ton of options in their HUDs which means you’ve really bought something you can wear a ton of times and it’s worth each linden you spent.

Flutterwave – The Digital Payment Infrastructure Of The Future

Flutterwave is an online payment solutions company that provides the gateway individuals and businesses use to accept and make payments in over 30 African countries via credit cards like; MasterCard, Visa, Verve and alternative payment methods like mobile money and e-wallets.

The company was co-founded in 2016 by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (popularly known as E) and Olugbenga Agboola and it’s headquarters is in San Francisco Bay Area, West Coast Western US.

At the moment, flutterwave has two major products in the market; RAVE and BARTER

RAVE is a safe and easy to use service provided by flutterwave for business owners to accept and make payments (in any currency) through a simple payment link or integrated payment payout system using mobile money, credit cards, bank transfers, USSD or ACH

BARTER is a digital payment solution that allows users create virtual debit cards and get access to some financial management tools (also available on their app). Some of the things barter can be used for include;

Management of payments and subscriptions for services like Netflix, Apple Music, Web Hosting, etc

Sending money to and receiving money from friends

Getting detailed reports to show spending pattern

Barter’s standard plan is free for everyone but anyone who wants to enjoy added benefits can upgrade to Barter Premium.

WHY SHOULD YOU USE FLUTTERWAVE ?

Their rave platform enables users to carry out multiple currency transactions on the Barter app so you can pay for international services like; Facebook, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.

It costs absolutely nothing for SMEs and startups to integrate on their platform.

They have a global presence with offices in San Francisco, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and they are currently working on expanding to Asia.

It’s important to note that in the past, people have complained about;

Network-based transaction failures

Glitchy app that requires new update to fix

Reservations about giving our sensitive data (like bvn number) due to fear of privacy breach and theft

With the amount of growth shown in just under 4 years – raising over $20M in 8 funding rounds by various investors and helping brands like Taxify, Hotels.NG, etc to process over $1BN in 10 million plus transactions, it’s safe to declare that Flutterwave is the payment system that’ll take over Africa and the world in a few years.

Aaron Harris, a partner at Y Combinator summed it up nicely in 2016 – “when you look at how payments works in the developing world, you start to realize that it’s a lot more complicated than in the US. There’s a huge number of different payment options and different reasons for poor to use each. By making it way for any merchant, no matter where they are located, to process all of the available payment options, Flutterwave is changing how money money moves on an entire continent. That’s a huge idea, E has an incredible team to attack it”

Midtown Workplace

Midtown Workplace in Brisbane’s CBD delivers a sustainable and adaptable model that accommodates new ways of working for an increasingly distributed workforce.

Spanning 9 levels, the workplace is within an adaptive reuse development that merges two ex-government buildings into a single A-Grade tower. The use of recycled materials from the original building has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 11,000 tonnes – equivalent to running the building carbon-neutral for four years.

The brief – create a nimble workplace that will adapt to the evolution and progression of our client’s business, their story, and their connection with their community.

Armed with the principles of connection and evolution, we transformed these values into two tangible design features. The first – a central atrium fringed with planting and drenched in daylight, anchored by an auditorium at its base. The second – a central high-street providing an activated thoroughfare that promotes serendipitous exchange and curates’ moments of discovery and innovation.  

The new workplace explores an alternative to standard workspaces, creating a diverse and blended model that is supported by a high proportion of hackable, collaborative areas. 30% of the primary work points are moveable, affording teams complete autonomy and control over their workspace.

‘The Pit’, a magnet for cultural exchange, is a space for our client’s team to gather as a whole and galvanise their vibrant culture.

A highly mobile organisation with a vast global network, our client’s required an agile approach to technology and connectivity. Responsive meeting room bookings and occupancy technology was trialled throughout a customised POC process and seamlessly integrated into the fit out.
