opportunity.
inwardly, the coward laughs so that the memories of her cowardice—of all the times she purposely missed meeting him—do not make her cry.  content tags: pokemon au, pining, they're in that book 1 stage where they like each other but haven't solidified their partnership, did i mention pining? notes: this turned out to be much longer than the others...wrote this while fighting off sleep so it might not be too coherent
delusional thoughts—about dates in the city, after their respective gym or contest matches, at the pokemon center, or out in the wilderness while camping—run wild across her mindscape, half-heartedly chases by the remaining bits of her sanity. not even the loud pounding of her heartbeat can drown out the sound of her voice and the decidedly not-friendly thoughts it whispers, nor can it serve as a warning, a reminder for her lips not to twitch into a creepy grin.
a lump escapes back down her throat, scratching its walls in a way that makes her think she might have a sore throat. numbers two and three—where she draws the line, aware of the seconds ticking down on the non-existent clock—soon follow, punctuated by the loud, drawn out sips she takes from her iced coffee.
accompanying them through their flight is the sight of her lips twitching into what she hopes is a comforting smile, then relaxing into what she knows is not; not with her dark brown eyes passionately pleading the world to make sure her current companion can't guess her thoughts.
"sorry, i guess that's a weird thing to ask for. traveling together," the boy she likes says, punctuating the end of his sentence with an awkward laugh and a rub on his neck.
the fingers on her free hand fiddle with the hem of her dress, dragging it over her knee so that it covers the small hole on the inner thigh of her black leggings that she's never really cared about before. kiran laughs awkwardly alongside him.
"that's—" she pauses and looks away, her gaze darting to the baby vulpix slowly, carefully approaching her boisterous electivire.  it's enough to distract her from her current situation, though it comes the cost of a persistent melancholic twinge in her heart. "i'm sure my pokemon would..."
this is an opportunity, she knows this well. a chance to get to know him better and endear herself to him in the same way he managed to do so to her.
but would this have happened without sunny?
"sorry," he repeats uselessly. from the corner of her eye, she can see him balance his cup on top of his lap. "we aren't that close for me to be saying something like that."
gold-frosted bangs obscure the blue eyes she loves so much; gloved fingers curl into tight fists, resting on his knee; and chewed up lips curve into a frown, giving away whatever his hands did not.
it reminds her of that night in the eternal sanctum, the night she realized she was capable of loving someone—that it wasn't just a passing fantasy to keep herself occupied with.
kiran covers his hand with her own. fixing her gaze onto their joined hands, she chides, "i thought we agreed this wasn't your fault. no one could've known vulpix would hatch so soon."
he looks up at her, sweeping his bangs up and pinning them in place with his other hand.
"i feel bad," alfonse confesses, his voice low. "everyone was looking forward to it and now—"
the cause of their anguish, a baby vulpix she named sunny, rushes back to the only being that brings her comfort: alfonse's snorlax, who happened to be the first person she saw upon hatching. in her wake, she leaves scarlet the electivire in shock, his left arm reaching helplessly after her and his wires frozen mid-flail.
with a rueful smile, he finishes, "this happened."
a buzz sounding from her oversized hoodie's pocket distracts her for a moment. her hand slips inside and grasps her pokedex, but makes no moves to bring it out in alfonse's presence.
"something wrong?" the boy asks. "is it—"
it's nothing. don't worry about it.
"what if we called each other? all the time?" the words slip out before her brain has the chance to properly vet them. any chance to pass them off as a joke or take them back in a tasteful way gets snatched away right in front of her eyes as, rather than only her brain shutting down, her soul decides to leave her body.
truly, a coward to her core.
but alfonse is sweet to her these days, despite his initial coldness towards her, and even her bones know that there shouldn't be any real reason to turn her down. not their marrow though—there still needs to be a part of her that retains her identity as a skeptic in her day to day life.
"hmm." he adopts a thinking pose—his chin cupped between his index finger and his thumb—and closes his eyes. "we could make sure we run into each other in other cities, instead of missing each other by a hair's breadth."
inwardly, the coward laughs so that the memories of her cowardice—of all the times she purposely missed meeting him—do not make her cry.
"right, that's just what i was thinking," she comments, snapping back to the present with little difficulty. "we can have sunny spend time with my team without having to travel together."
a compromise, one that won't make her feel like she trapped him into a situation he was only suggesting out of courtesy.
dark brown eyes dart from the vulpix in question to the boy sitting next to her as their owner retracts her hand. his lips curve into a brilliant smile. one that should, by all accounts, make beautiflies spawn in the hostile lands of her stomach but instead, it feels like a swarm of dustox have decided to take over instead—as if she's said and done the wrong thing somehow.
"well, we already have each other's numbers."
gloved hands pick up the cup on their owner's lap as he stands up. shifting the empty cup into one hand, alfonse holds his hand out for her.
"so i think this could work. i'm not an early sleeper by any means, so feel free to call me even at two in the morning," he tells her.
kiran grasps his hand and, with her gaze fixed on sunny, stands up. her next words sprint through her mind for a few laps, in hopes that she can say something mildly witty without stuttering.
"what a coincidence." she smiles. "it's the same for me."

@analuein said: Yanmega lingers by the entrance to the Oreburgh Mine, it's wings beating with the volume and ferocity of a jet. When Roark resurfaces with his finds, the Pokémon's eyes quickly narrow.
( YOU. )
It zooms forward to acknowledge him with a loud buzz, before plucking the shiniest stone from the top of the cart and flying away with it. Why? It seems it's just in the mood to stir up trouble... / inbox call.
Tumblr media
It isn’t much of a surprise when the coal mines turn up with very interesting finds—truly, rocks, and especially coal, were simply fascinating. Between some of these veins were rich pockets of goodies that could be found in the underground. The deeper they went, the more interesting the finds became. Today, at least, was a nice helping of heart scales and water stones, glistening as Roark squints from the sunlight from behind a heavy cart full of coal. They were ripe and ready for the taking, especially considering Ramses and Volkner’s Electivire are taking their sweet time behind the crew.
Yanmega’s fascinatingly violent wingbeat is a strange noise over the hustle and bustle of machinery and voices, high-pitched. Before he can even peek over, Yanmega has already greeted him, and Roark barely gets the chance to realize this jet fighter of a ‘mon is shiny as well!
Tumblr media
“Hey, hey, hey! At least ask for permission?!” And there it goes, stealing the one whole heart scale that his team has miraculously come across. His companions are split between surprise and amusement as Roark just stands there, not at all sure of what to make of the last minute or so. “...There’s no way that was wild, right? Who in the hell...” Is this technically highway robbery?

My Pokémon Teams for the BG3 Companions
So, I did this for fun, and decided to create Pokemon teams for all of the companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, including the default Dark Urge. I did not do one for Tav since Tav is completely an OC, whereas at least with the Dark Urge, even though they are also customizable, there is a base one you can use without changing anything if you want. My rules for myself were that each of them had to have a Starter Pokemon and no Legendaries/Mythicals/Ultra Beasts/Paradox Pokemon/etc. So, here they are:

Name: Barak FC: Ban (7 Deadly Sins)
Age: 27
Hometown: Agate Village, Orre
Type Specialist: Electric
Born to a family of Dragon-Type trainers in Orre, Barak set his sights on other interests. Music. As a child he had a fondness for Electric-Type Pokemon. He set off on his journey with his Elekid partner when he became old enough to travel, starting off in Johto.
Do you like music rhythm games? Barak’s gym may be up your alley. There are two ways to get through the gym. A guitar course (Trainers can pick between lead, base, and  rhythm guitar) where trainers need to use themselves and their Pokemon to hold the right cords and notes on a large guitar themed floor. The other is a musical beat course, where trainers must hit the right note boxes in order. The better the scores on one of the courses, the stronger the trainer they’ll have to fight between said courses.
It’s said he’s the middle child of three brothers. One being a member of interpol, the other roaming regions, seeking to become the strongest Dragon trainer.
Electivire - Motor Drive - Wild Charge - Ice Punch - Earthquake - Volt Switch
Galvantula - Compound Eyes - Thunder - Bug Buzz - Energy Ball - Sticky Web
Eelektross - Levitate - Volt Switch - Giga Drain - Flamethrower - Acid Spray
Toxtricity (Amped) - Punk Rock - Boomburst - Overdrive - Volt Switch - Sludge Wave

British LegendsxPokémon
Kings/Gym Leaders Part 2
Flying Type Leader:
King Lot
Tumblr media
I mentioned in the Gawain post that his family had a tradition of receiving flying type egg when they come of age. So, Lot is a Flying Master. And after he dies, Gaheris is the Flying type but he and Agravaine will get their own joint post when the time comes.
Lot likes to parade Tropius and Archeops around. They are both extremely rare. Archeops was created from the fossil using magic. Tropius lies around and Lot picks a banana and gives it to someone. He likes getting bananas in a non tropical region. Morgause will always roll her eyes when he brags about them.
Anyway, the gym is broken up like the Orkney Islands. You have to fight a train on each little island and then you have to fly to the next island. And of course, it’s a puzzle, because you can go either of the directions and it might be wrong.
Charizard’s moves are Air Slash, Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, and Solar Beam.
Archeops’ moveset is Rock Slide, Fly, Shadow Claw and Dragon Claw.
Emolga’s moves are Thunderbolt, Aerial Ace, Volt Switch and Light Screen.
Oricorio’s moves are Revelation Dance, Hurricane, Calm Mind and Air Slash.
Gliscor’s moveset is Earthquake, Poison Jab, Aerial Ace and Fire Fang.
Tropius’ moves are Solar Beam, Fly, Synthesis and Energy Ball.
Grass Type Leader:
Mistress Annowre
Tumblr media
I was desperate for female leaders. She lives in an Enchanted Forest, so I picked grass. Also, I like how an Enchantress has a Parasect.
We will be playing with the Enchanted Forest theme for this gym. It’s a puzzle gym where a tree could be a tree, or a Trevenant. It also moves. Image the Lost Forest from Zelda.
Abomasnow’s moves are Leech Seed, Giga Drain, Blizzard and Earthquake.
Shiftry’s moves are Sucker Punch, Leafstorm, Rock Slide and Nasty Plot.
Trevenant’s moves are Will-O-Wisp, Wood Hammer, Shadow Claw and Protect.
Ferrothorn’s moves are Gyro Ball, Iron Defense, Spikes and Power Whip.
Parasect’s moveset is Body Slam, Spore, X-Scissor and Seed Bomb
Gogoat’s moves are Horn Leech, Rock Slide, Wil Charge and Toxic.
Poison Type Leader:
King Claudas
Tumblr media
Evil man gets the type often used by the evil teams. After he dies, Morgause will take over as the Poison Master. But Morgause is special, so she gets her own post.
Claudas’ gym is in the dungeons. There is ooze coming from the falls and it’s dark. You might need a Pokémon who knows Flash or a torch. If you go in the wrong cell, the cell door closes and you have to fight the trainer for the key to go out. But of course you eventually end up meeting Claudas.
Venusaur’s moves are Sludge Bomb, Solar Beam, Earthquake and Leech Seed.
Weezing’s moveset is Shadow Ball, Clear Smog, Destiny Bond and Thunderbolt.
Amoonguss’ moves are Spore, Igraine, Sludge Bomb and Giga Drain.
Swalot’s moves are Ice Beam, Gastro Acid, Shadow Ball And Sludge Bomb.
Ariados’ moveset is Toxic, Spider Web, Big Bite and Sucker Punch.
Toxicroak’s moves are X-Scissor, Brick Break, Earthquake and Ice Punch.
Electric Type Leader:
King Cador
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest, this was the last gym leader I figured out. I created the team before I figured who would own the team. I’m like Cador should be a gym leader, he raised Guinevere and he is very important. And only the electric type was left.
The gym is in a tin mine. To advance in the gym you have to mine for keys to go into the next room. One you find all the keys you can battle Cador.
Ampharos’ moves are Dragon Pulse, Thunderbolt, Light Screen and Power Gem.
Luxray’s moves are Ice Fang,Wild Charge, Crunch and Superpower.
Galvantula’s moves are Thunder, Bug Buzz, Sticky Web and Energy Ball.
Eelektross’ moves are Spark, Energy Ball, Crunch and Coil.
Jolteon’s moves are Volt Change, Signal Beam, Shadow Ball and Thunder Wave.
Electivire’s moveset is Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, Brick Break and Psychic.
Ground Type Leader:
Sir Hector de Maris
Tumblr media
He took the gym after his father died. Lancelot didn’t want it, so he gave it to Hector. Ground is strong against poison and I would like to imagine that Hector is getting justice for the death of his father and uncle.
You get to the ruins of his father’s’ castle and you are wondering where’s the gym? You look through the ruins and find a doorway that goes underground. Then you see that the castle was reconstructed under the old castle. You have traps and zubats. It’s basically a mini cave.
Steelix’s moves are Dragon Tail, Rock Polish, Earthquake and Iron Head.
Donphane’s moveset is Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Stone Edge and Rapid Spin.
Gastrodon’s moveset is Scald, Earth Power, Ice Beam and Body Slam
Claydol’s moves are Toxic, Ice Beam, Earthquake and Psychic
Marowak’s moves are Fire Punch, Stone Edge, Earthquake and Swords Dance
Hippowdon’s moves are Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Iron Head and Earthquake.

"Woah, that's like a totes cool pokemon you have!" Referring to his Electivire. "I've never seen one like that before!"
Tumblr media
People still say totes...?
“How old are you exactly small fry?”
The Electivire however made a buzzing noise as he stepped up to the woman, happy for the compliment and flexing to show himself off!
“Tch, It’s an Electavire, evolved him a long time ago and now he’s just a show off.” Resting his hands on his hips, the man rose a brow, “Who are ya...”

I Want The Whole World To See! (I Believe!)
Pokémon SoulSilver: Completed!
Finishing up Gen4 with my second trip through the Johto remakes was, as always, speedier than my initial, more explorative trip. However, since these games are still rather large, with two regions, I still clocked in 50 hours, 38 minutes of gameplay. There were very few pokémon that I needed to capture here - mostly just ones I had held back in order to use them on a team - and unusually, I had completely pre-planned my team ahead of time. This was in part to make sure I had the right team to cover all the HMs I needed, and also because I wanted to transfer in my whole team as early as possible so that my levelling up was nice and even and I would be much better prepared for Red. I didn’t want to get my arse kicked again! This absolutely worked, as when I reached the climax of the game, I needed a lot less level grinding to get me up high enough to defeat him and complete the game.
This means that there was much less Pokédex focus this time out, just 227 seen / 29 caught pre-National ‘Dex, increasing ever so slightly to to 321 seen / 38 caught once the National ‘Dex was obtained. I think this is a record low of pokémon caught (discounting the semi-completed Emerald US run)!
Let’s meet the team.
Washington the Feraligatr: Finally wrapping up my usage of all the Johto starters, Washington is very useful as it has the ability to learn all three Water-type HMs; Surf, Waterfall, and Whirlpool, meaning I don’t need a second Water-type on the team. However, this leaves him very short of coverage, so I actually just taught him the latter two, and added in Dragon Claw and Avalanche for some super-effective coverage against the powerful Dragon-type that show up later in the game. Feraligatr has good all-round stats, and a strong Attack, so Washington was pretty good in this role, especially as he held a Wacan Berry to reduce super-effective Electric-type damage. This was great as Dragonite in particular would often use Thunder which, with the berry, couldn’t OHKO Washington and he would then destroy them with Avalanche (which doubles it’s base power if you take damage before you use it on that turn).
Nahuatl the Xatu: I never actually planned to use Xatu - mine is named after an ancient Aztec language - until I realised that there is almost no other Johto pokémon, that I hadn’t already used on a team before, that learns Fly. Fly is pretty much an essential move and since I didn’t want to use Lugia or Ho-Oh (mainly because I wanted my team available early and they are usually caught at level 40+), it came down to a toss up between Xatu and Delibird. Although I don’t hate Delibird, it’s far from my favourite pokémon (even if the Ice-type would have been useful), and I do like Natu/Xatu - so the choice was easy. It threw my team balance off a bit, since both the Flying and Psychic-types were covered elsewhere, so Nahuatl became a bit of a mishmash of strategies. Aside from Fly, she had Shadow Ball to take on other Psychics, Light Screen (with a Light Clay held item) to help boost the team’s Special Defence, and Pluck. Pluck, I really enjoyed, as it will deal damage as well as stealing and consuming the opponents berry. Given nearly every high level opponent has a health restoring berry on their ace pokémon, this was immensely satisfying!
Buzzkill the Yanmega: Named after the two things I can imagine it being good at doing, Buzzkill is the only new evolution to a previously established pokémon on this team, that is otherwise full of classic Johto ‘mons. Evolving from the cheery-looking Yanma, Yanmega is a big, vicious-looking, prehistoric dragonfly, and I love it. It is quick, with a great Special Attack, so I loaded up Buzzkill with dual STAB options; the Bug-type moves Bug Buzz and U-turn, and the Flying-type Air Slash. U-turn in particular is a basic but fun strategy, making Yanmega a great lead pokémon. You just U-turn on whatever you are facing, dealing huge damage if you are (super-)effective, or allowing you to bring in a better type match-up if it is resisted. The last slot was Flash as this was still a required HM in Johto, and his held item was a Charti Berry to try and mitigate his 4x Rock-type weakness. To be honest, with not amazing defences, this didn’t always work, but it did help out a few times when I was expecting Buzzkill to go down, allowing for a U-turn and a last minute escape!
セレビィ the Celebi: Something I don’t tend to use much on my teams are the Legendary or Mythical pokémon, but they do occasionally sneak in. In Celebi’s case, I’ve always liked it and I decided that I wanted to use this one in particular. This Celebi is the one that I caught in the Japanese version of Pokémon Colosseum when I was working completing the Gen3 pokédex. This took a lot of effort, and since Celebi is obtained at the low level of 5, it seemed a great opportunity to add it to my team so I used Pal Park to transfer it over. It’s name here is just the Japanese version of the name (Serebyi) as I didn’t want to try and nickname it in Japanese when I caught it (if it even gave me the option, I don’t actually recall!). Being a Mythical, Celebi has great all-rounder stats and ended up as a jack-of-all-trades. A supportive mixed attacker  with dual Psychic and Grass STAB moves in Psychic (hence why I didn’t bother with any Psychic-type moves for Nahuatl) and Energy Ball (powered up with a Miracle Seed). Aside from the HM Cut, the other move was Heal Bell which clears all status effects from you team - very handy in a support context.
Kaiju the Tyranitar: A much better choice than my HeartGold Electivire for a Godzilla-inspired nickname, Tyranitar was originally a pokémon I never planned to use. It is very popular, which put me off (I can be a stupid pokémon hipster, apparently), but I grew to really like it in Pokémon Go, where I have several very powerful ones that I use regularly, as well as a Larvitar named Shinjuku that I actually caught in Japan. So I relented and included Tyranitar on my team and it is really hard not to enjoy using it as it is so powerful! I gave Kaiju a Choice Scarf to help boost it’s not-so-great Speed, and the by-now-obligatory dual STAB moves. This time it was a Dark-type Crunch and a Rock-type Stone Edge (which, although it has shaky accuracy, devastates anything it does hit), as well as the HM Rock Climb to share the HM load. The final slot was used for Surf - which Tyranitar can rather inexplicably learn. I’m not complaining though - it freed up a slot on Feraligatr and gives Kaiju useful coverage against Ground-types!
Goodyear the Donphan: Last, but not least, a Johto pokémon I actually always wanted to use, but never managed to find a slot for until now. Donphan is not available until very late in the game so always missed out in Gen2, but with me transferring in team members from the off, this seemed like the perfect chance to add Phanpy to my team and have him evolve into Donphan. I’ve always liked the design of Donphan - the elephant/tire combination is really unique, and I think it was also really cool in the anime, so it was great to finally try one out. Aside from the ever useful Electric-type immunity, Goodyear (named after the tire brand) carried the last two HMs I needed - Strength and Rock Smash - and then my favourite; STAB Earthquake. Later in the game I also managed to get him to re-learn Thunder Fang as coverage against Water-types and a super-effective way to hit the Flying-types that are immune to Earthquake. To help counteract it’s poor speed, I gave him the Quick Claw. It is always very pleasing when this kicks in and you suddenly get to move before, and take out, an opponent before it deals you any damage!
And here they are - not as colourful as my HeartGold boys, but a nice Blue/Green/Grey aesthetic going on here:

And that is it for Gen4! All of my multiple trips through Sinnoh, Johto, and Kanto are completed. Now I just need to consolidate all the Pokédex into Pokémon Platinum and then it’s time for my favourite bits: Tops Tens and Graphs!

<a picture of adoption papers from goldenrod pokemon shelter, with identifying information carefully censored. the species name is listed as cubone, and the nickname is listed as gideon.>
<a picture of buzz and the newly dubbed gideon. they look absolutely overjoyed to be a true family.>
what can i say, they wore me down.
everyone, this is gideon. legally, they're my new cubone, but they're clearly buzz's baby.

❝Why ya mitherin’ me for, fool? What’cha think this is a pettin’ zoo or somethin’?! ❞
The monarch clings onto his head-wear in fear that the electric type would remove it and reveal his dishevelled mess of feathers atop of his head. The electivire was already running those grubby mitts of his down Dedede’s feathers that were on display and that was already far enough for this bird.!
