Andong is a city on the Nakdong River, in South Korea. It’s known for its open-air heritage museums. Andong Folk Museum uses exhibits and re-enactments to explain traditional ceremonies like weddings. Its outdoor area has thatched houses and a pair of carved totem poles. West of the city, Hahoe Folk Village has tile-roofed homes and traditional food. Nearby, Buyongdae Cliff has expansive river views.― Google

Andong in a day

What I did in Andong was amazing. I highly recommend this city when you come to visit Korea. Each city in Korea represent its own unique identity, and this small village have captured my heart. This was what happened:

1. HAHOE FOLK VILLAGE I just love things that are vintage. I rented a room in the village for a night. The place that I stayed was called Rakkojae. The host was super nice and also a very well cook. She gave a hot chestnut tea as a welcome drink. The room was a small hut, sleeping on a futon bed (which is putting a mattress on the floor, Korean style). Although this has become a touristic place to visit, there are still people living here. Wondering around the village was allowed and some of the houses were open for tourist to see inside.

2. SALTED MACKEREL It was lunch time at the point when I checked in. There’s a free mini bus for tourist to hop on/off to get to the restaurants area. There’s not many restaurants to choose from, so I decided to just try my luck and hope that the food is good. Which I was in luck because the food was good. I had a simple lunch, nothing fancy, rice with salted mackerel, and it was delish.

3. BUYONGDAE CLIFF for a panoramic view of the entire village. A river is in between the cliff and the village, thus I have to take a mini ferry ride to cross it. The ferry is not free, its only 1000won per person. Getting up you have to climb up. It’s like 100m ascend, manageable and it took me atleast 15 minutes, which was okay. I felt so accomplished when I’ve reached the top. The view is amazing.

4. CHICKEN HERBAL SOUP for dinner. The host cooked for us dinner, it is included in the room package. The food is delicious. The softness and tenderness of the chicken, it just melt in my mouth, even the bone just disintegrate. LOL. It’s a complete dinner, with rice, half of crunchy apple and a tea.

5. ABALONE PORRIDGE for breakfast. Not only the dinner was included, but the breakfast too! I didn’t take any pictures of my breakfast, camera was not ready! lol.

Overall, I had the best time ever in this village. I would definitely recommend this place to visit and to stay. It is beautiful, serene, historical, cultural and all the delicious food!
