Episode 180 : Reverse Jams
"Slashed all four tyres on the bandwagon..."
- Pos
The end of the fourteenth year of the show is here, with the numerically-satisfying number 180! It's been a good month for shows, with a highlight being seeing Edo G live for the first time, so I've included a couple of his tracks alongside some recent releases, a rarity or two, and some bonafide old classics. The show is a touch longer than usual, running a little over an hour, but hopefully it still flies by for you!
Mastodon : @[email protected]
Twitch : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Edo G, DJ Yoda, and Brad Baloo : Talk About It
Coming off the back of seeing a great performance by Edo G and DJ Yoda at The Hip-Hop Chip Shop in Manchester this month, I thought we'd start the episode with a smooth selection from their new "Hometown Heroes" EP. Edo G is in his grown man rap bag on a Brad Baloo beat, with Yoda on the cut - and if the record he's cutting is what I think it is, then that's an A1 selection.
Visoneers : Swahililand
I finally got round to digitising the "Hipology" 7" box set, a 2012 release by Marc Mac's Visioneers project that features tributes to the Hip-Hop side of his influences, and notably contains several cover versions of famously-sampled tracks, of which this is one. This is a beautiful version of a track originally by the late great jazz pianist and composed Ahmad Jamal, which eventually breaks out into the part most people will recognise - the mighty chords sampled from the Jamal version by J Dilla for De La Soul's "Stakes Is High".
DJ Spinna ft. Dynas : More
Grab the "Sonic Smash" album by Spinna if you see it - it's no longer on streaming services and with it also not being available on Bandcamp, picking up a physical copy is the only way to secure yourself a copy of this really high-quality album. In the meantime, take this slice, with Spinna coming with his trademark synth bass as the centre of the instrumental, and Miami's Dynas, a longtime collaborator, spitting a positive message on the mic.
Buscrates ft. Soraya Watti : On My Way
It was great to hear Buscrates play this track during a DJ set on Twitch recently while Soraya Watti was actually in the chat - the love she was getting was beautiful. This warm, bassy, soulful cut is the closer on last year's "Control Center" LP, a triumph from the Pittsburgh synth maestro.
Curren$y ft. Freddie Gibbs : Stash House
Eighties vibes here on the production, with 808-Ray going vaporwave style on the main sample and then adding his drum track to it. Curren$y fills this lane extremely well, as he uses his trademark relaxed flow to liken the dope stuff being exported out of his studio to...well, actual dope...while guest Freddie Gibbs just jumps straight out of the analogies and into the street for real. This is from the "Andretti 12/30", which was one of twelve (!) monthly releases Curren$y did back in 2016 - he might sound relaxed enough to be able to fall off the floor, but he's one of the most prolific MCs of his generation.
Fat Pat : Tops Drop
RIP Fat Pat, the creator of a true Southern classic that just overflows with good vibes! J Slash on production brings in the bassline groove from an 80s soul classic on this track from Pat's debut "Ghetto Dreams", and the lyrics are just about the joys of stunting in a nice convertible. This still gets plenty of play to this day on its home turf, and the youngsters at University of Houston basketball games hear it as the team's theme music - even though it was released before they were born!
Ilajide : Number One
The exact flavour of banging beat we've come to expect from Detroit's Ilajide, with the drums smacking, the main sample stuttering and the bass coming in strong to undergird it all. I might need to go and find/buy the original sample, which plays for a few seconds quietly at the very end, but you can find this track and some other excellent work on the "3" album.
Declaime : Exclaim The Name
A track with a bump so urgent it almost feels like it's tripping over itself (courtesy of Kankick), this is quality turn of the century underground business out of Oxnard, California from the 2001 "Andsoitisaid" LP. Declaime is perhaps better known to many as Dudley Perkins - especially if you follow the Stones Throw label - and while he can sing, don't get confused and think his bars aren't tough.
Semi Six : 24K Rap
One thing about a Semi Six record is that you rarely get a long and clear intro, which might not be ideal for us DJs but shows how eager he is to get on and demolish the track! It's fitting that he mentions Raekwon here, as the track draws its title from a track that Rae and Havoc did with J Dilla that came out on the 2009 posthumous LP "Jay Stay Paid". AntBell! produces this new single, while Semi delivers, as promised, the golden era rhymes he mentions in the hook.
Edo G ft. Krumb Snatcha and Jaysaun : Stop Dat
Pure Boston on the mic here, with the message from all the MCs being an emphatic recommendation to stay true to yourself rather than putting out a false image - one that at best is an embarrassment, and at worst a safety risk. Pete Rock's beat smacks without overly dominating, leaving space for you to understand every single word. The place to find this is the "My Own Worst Enemy" album, which has been re-released digitally in recent years with the instrumentals for every track bundled in, making it a true Hip-Hop DJ jewel.
De La Soul : Big Mouf
A bit of an obscurity for you! "Are You In?: Nike+ Original Run" was a collaboration between De La and Nike (yes, the shoe company) that was intended to be part of a series of albums as soundtracks for runners. The whole thing is a largely continuous mix, and has some really good tracks that even dedicated De La fans might not know! This particular track is a heavy Dave West production with an incredibly long intro before the lyrics properly kick in - that isn't me cutting it back and forth or extending it, the original sounds like that. You might struggle to find this one - I don't think it's on any of the streaming services or download stores, and the 2009 vinyl that I got at the time only pops up for sale occasionally.
DJ Nu-Mark ft. Full Crate : Pass The Courvoisier
Another cover version, this time of a Pharrell-produced Busta Rhymes club banger, which was a highlight of the 2021 "Run For Cover" album - a full version excursion from a DJ known best as part of Jurassic 5. Nu-Mark links up with Full Crate, a producer from Armenia via the Netherlands, for a horn-laden track that could almost make you believe that it's an old original that the Busta record was reworking!
James Brown : Don't Tell A Lie About Me And I Won't Tell The Truth On You
Topical 😆 A slice of funk from "Hell", The Godfather's thirty-eighth studio album, released back in 1974. You may well recognise this title as it was borrowed almost word-for-word for a recent lyric!
[Easy Mo Bee] Termanology : It's Time
This is the tasty, but extremely short, beat that opens up Term's "Politics As Usual" LP, produced by the great Easy Mo Bee. I'd almost forgotten about it, but it provides a nice bridge into the next cut...
Portishead : Strangers
There's not much I can say about the brilliant Portishead debut album "Dummy" that hasn't been said by full-time writers, so just take it from me - it's a must-listen. Beth Gibbons' voice is processed here as though it's coming from a recording decades older, and the union of that and that heavy production was highly innovative at the time.
Chalk : Stay With Me
This month we were treated to a new release by Manchester artist Chalk that has been four years in the making, a real labour of love. His new LP "Death Knocks And He Shall Die" is a film noir-influenced instrumental album, a soundtrack to a film that doesn't exist - think of a darker, more vintage take on Prince Paul's "A Prince Among Thieves" without any MCs. It's best appreciated over the full length of its sixteen tracks, but this is a nice sample of what you can expect. When I played this track on a recent Twitch stream, at least a couple of people immediately said that it reminded them of DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" - high praise indeed.
Planet Asia : Place Of Birth
I can't remember where I first heard this, but it was probably an underground mixtape somewhere, and it reminds me of the kind of thing I often used to end up buying when I was supposed to be shopping for tracks for a club night! Planet Asia is a veteran MC out of Fresno, California, and this 1999 single was a fine one as just the second release in his career. He gets a big assist here from two-thirds of Cali compatriots Dilated Peoples - Evidence's beat is dark and fairly sparse, with Babu's cuts adding extra texture in the hooks, intro, and outro.
Evil Needle ft. Venuz Beats : Dive
Evil Needle is becoming a favorite instrumental producer of mine, and together with Venuz Beats he brings us a heavy-bottomed yet floaty head-nodder which you can find on the "Sound Escapes" EP - well worth picking up just for this one.
UGK : Ridin' Dirty
Finishing up with another Southern classic, another car themed track, but a world away from the celebratory air of "Tops Drop". As funky and mellow as the late Pimp C's production is, this is lyrically dark and paranoid - but as a wise man once said, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. The "they" in this case are the police and their informants, the natural enemies of anyone riding in a car carrying something that they legally shouldn't be... This is the title track from UGK's third LP, and a perfect example of what Pimp C's stepfather meant when advised his son to "put some music into" his Hip-Hop - the multi-instrumentalist was a master at bringing that live feel to his work in a way that ensures it hasn't dated a day.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

The Five Areas That Helped Police Catch Soham Killer
Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman were ten-year-old girls murdered in Soham, England. Post on the murders here. Ian Huntley was sentenced to two life sentences for murder and Maxine Carr was found guilty of perverting the course of justice for lying. The five following areas have been highlighted as leading to the arrests:
1. Jessica’s Phone
Like many young girls, Jessica rarely went anywhere without her mobile phone, which her parents had bought her as a safety device. Jessica had phoned her parents shortly before her disappearance to tell them she and Holly were going to buy sweets, the mobile phone was turned off shortly after. The last traceable signal from the phone before it was turned off was traced to Huntley’s home. Jessica’s mother later attempted to phone the mobile and found it to be switched off.
2. Huntley and Carr Speaking to the Press
Huntley was eager to speak to journalists who noticed both his and Carr’s odd behaviour. Huntley appeared emotional, sweaty and erratic, he also initially refused to have his picture taken and was extremely keen to help with the search. Huntley also asked if they had found the girls’ shirts despite, a strange question which showed he was aware the shirts had been removed. Chillingly Carr gave an interview in which she showed journalists a card Holly had handmade her, describing Holly as ‘lovely’ but tellingly using the past tense (’she was just lovely,’ ‘that was the kind of girl she was’). This immediately rang alarm bells as Holly and Jessica were, at the time, thought to still be alive. Huntley also asked odd questions about DNA evidence.
3. The Girls’ T-shirts
The haunting photograph taken of Holly and Jessica the night they disappeared was published on the front page of every newspaper. Their distinctive, red Manchester United T-shirts with David Beckham’s name on the back were immediately recognisable. Footballer Beckham even appealed for the girls’ safe return. A reconstruction of Holly and Jessica’s final known movements also heavily focussed on the recognisable shirts. The first search of Soham failed to find the clothing however a second search of Huntley’s workplace found the cut and charred remains of the two t-shirts. This attempt to hide evidence led officers to believe Holly and Jessica were dead and arrest Huntley and Carr. Fingerprints on the bin liner the shirt were found inside matched Huntley’s, these fingerprints were consistent with someone attempting to push down and hide the bag. Fibres from the shirts were found in Huntley’s home and on his boots.
4. Huntley’s Car
Huntley had completely new tyres put on his car the day after the girls went missing which he had fitted under a false name and registration, the mechanic reported being paid ten pounds to forge the documents. The mechanic also noted the tyres coming off the car were in good condition and did not need changing. Huntley also replaced the boot carpet and was seen by multiple witnesses cleaning the car. Mud and chalk matching samples taken from the ditch where Holly and Jessica’s bodies were found was found on the bottom of Huntley’s car.
5. The False Alibi
Carr initially claimed to have been at home with Huntley at the time of Holly and Jessica’s murders, even specifying what she had cooked for lunch. It was later discovered Carr was in Grimsby, 110 miles away, visiting her mother when the murders took place with phone records showing the pair had spoken on the phone multiple times on the day.

It’s Not About the Books Today! Part Two
Well I hope that my last blog about making sure you don’t end up with a car that doesn’t work after not using it every day. Has given you some help as the last thing we need is when things get back to normal is a huge bill for new batteries & tyres.
So today I’m going to talk about routines. Over the years I’ve found that it’s important to try and keep to a routine. Otherwise the days end up messy, you accomplish nothing and your mental health starts to deteriorate. So here is a list that I still try to stick to, but with bad health it doesn’t always happen.
Getting Up in the Morning & Bedtime:
I have found that keeping to a set time for getting up and going to bed is still the best thing for your wellbeing. It’s so easy to start lying in every day and staying up till all hours, but I have found that this puts more stress on your body.
So I get up every day between 10 am and 11 am (unless I’m really not good or haven’t slept at all during the night). I have 3 alarms set on my phone for 10 am, 10:30 am & 11 am. My Fitbit watch also vibrates with a silent alarm too.
I have another alarm that goes off at 9:30 pm, which I class as my bedtime. When this alarm goes off I start to to prepare for going to bed, by turning things off, making sure that cat’s have enough food and water for the night. They know as soon as I turn the TV off it’s bedtime and they come running from wherever they’ve been in hope of getting a treat. More than not they don’t but they do what they can to try and change my mind.
So by 10 pm I’m usually heading upstairs to bed, but then I have my beauty regime where I do a bit of pampering by: Putting on my small humidifier that lets you put natural relaxing fragrant oils in, which helps me to relax more and to eventually fall asleep. I have also found doing a small beauty routine using natural products that have an aromatherapy benefit to them also helps me to start relaxing. Once I’ve done all of that I then turn off all the lights and read with my Kindle for an hour or so. I find reading quietens my brain down and I fall asleep while reading.
Some Kindles have an automatic light sensor, which gradually dims in the dark, helping you to fall asleep and it doesn’t disturb others.
If my brain won’t quieten down after reading I will then do a guided sleep meditation, which I have never gotten to the end of.
Getting Dressed:
Staying in your PJ’s is novel at first, but it can soon start to affect your mental health. Possibly more for someone like me, as staying in PJ’s all day means I’ve just not got the energy to get dressed or I’m ill. If I do push myself to get dressed then that means I’ve over exerted myself and I will struggle to get myself anything to eat. I know it may sound drastic to you but ME/CFS is like this.
Meals:
Stick to your 3 meals a day. Don’t snack just for the sake of it or because your treating this time away from work as a holiday. It’s so easy to put weight on and twice as hard to get it off. Especially as we get older.
Also with not moving around and going out to work etc, maybe now is the time to try and eat a little bit less, making our food cupboard supplies last longer. With everyone panic buying, stocks are low and we won’t be able to stock up in the way we have been used too.
My mum and I have already started to do this, she was a child in the war so grew up rationing. Don’t waste your food, use your leftovers for another meal so you only need to add a bit of something to make it another full meal. I don’t have any food waste, as I have become very good at just making the right amount of food for one person or I make enough food for a family split it into batches and freeze the rest. (OK so I’m probably telling you something you already know).
Week Day’s to Weekends:
Even after 15 years of not going out to work I still treat my week day’s differently to my weekends.
During the Week:
When I’m well enough I still treat the working week as if I’m still working. I have set household jobs that I try to do:
I know to a lot of you this isn’t very much and some weeks I struggle to do these basic household jobs, but it still helps me keep a bit of structure to my life. Also I do craft, blog and watch TV during the day as well when I’m able. I think this is one of the things that has helped me a lot over the years.
Weekend:
The weekends I have kept the same as when I was working. Except that part where you go out shopping with friends or go to the pub etc and socialise.
The alarm clock is turned off over the weekend so I can have a long lie in. I stay up a bit later on Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday I usually spend all day reading or catching up with what I’ve recorded over the week, and Sunday I may well have a duvet day. Especially if it’s winter and I watch old movies or watch movies 24, so I don’t really have to pay them much attention.
I know that these are only very basic tips, and you’ll feel as though:
I’m teaching you to suck eggs!!
But sometimes we need reminded of the basic things in life and enjoy them, I’ve found over this last week that the world is finally slowing down to my pace of life. My mum keeps saying she feels as though she’s gone back to the 1950’s & 60’s as there are less cars on the roads, no planes constantly going over heading to Manchester Airport.
Please let me know of any tips you may have, as you may have tips or ideas on something I’ve not even thought about.
Take car & keep safe Alex (Gadgetgirl71)

UC 49.2 - Corpus Christi, Cam vs Merton, Ox
I was going to start this review with an awfully antagonistic alliterative articulation, because it was too tempting to ignore the four-peat on the hard c that Corpus Christi College Cambridge affords me. But I got a second puncture in as many rides on my way home from work, and my fruitless attempt to fix my faulty fenders and flip-flops hubs ate too far into the time I had set aside to search for suitable synonyms for insertion in succinct sentences, so my idea for this strange soliloquy became more silly than savvy (it took long enough trying to find parts of a bike that began with F) and instead I’m going to talk about pumps and puncture repair kits.
To get to the office by bus it takes just over an hour going in and close to ninety minutes coming back. By bike it is theoretically (if you get neither tired nor lost) around thirty five minutes, which is just about as long as a car (which I do not have) would take, so this seemed like a wonderful idea, and I bought one from a Gumtree man, who assured me that the brakes, despite not working at all when I tested them out, would “warm up if I used them for a bit”. This was not true in the slightest and the bike still slows down with all the G-Force of Dumbo on ice, but that’s the least of my worries.
For two days I cycled to work with nothing but the gruelling physical exertion to bother me. And then on my way home the next day, having been informed of this by the curious jolting sensation shooting upwards from the seat, I realised that I was flat in the back, and pushed the remainder of the journey, slow and defeated.
Then, to the local cyclery to purchase a pump and a puncture repair kit (you may think I’m stupid for not having a pump until this point, and you’d be right), and then to the garden to apply the sticky plasters. There arises an issue though, when the number of punctures my inner tube has sustained (somewhere in the region greater than seven) is more than the number of plasters provided in the repair kit, and this issue is not abated by wrapping sellotape around the tube because apparently air still escapes through it. So, a failure, and the bus stop beckons.
Another day, another trial, and I buy a brand new inner tube, which is eventually installed - the speed of my repair suffers from the fact that I foolishly believe, having watched the YouTube video of how to replace an inner tube, that I know how to replace an inner tube. But pump puMP PUMP and I’m ready to go. I can rise at seven instead of six and I sleep with a relaxed joy in my heart.
I get to work fine, but before I even reach the roundabout (which is about 5% into the ride) I hear the kind of hiss you hear when the soul of a character in a fantasy TV show leaves their body and I know my tyre is deceased, murdered by the frankly ludicrous amounts of glass on the Manchester streets. I ride on a bit more, because otherwise I wouldn’t be home till sunset, and this proves to be my undoing. I buy some more puncture plasters, but the inner tube is dead.
And what was the point of all this nonsense about my bike? I’m not sure, but this is the point where I have to try and link it to the Challenge.
Its quite a difficult show to participate in, University Challenge, even at home. The most accomplished quizzer in the world will have some questions where they don’t know what is being asked for, so for most of us its far harder than that. And yet we still watch, no matter how futile our interaction may seem. The level of quizzing on UC is such that you could spend years and years watching, without appearing to get any closer to knowing any of the answers.
But then suddenly your hard work pays off, and you’re beating the youngsters to the punch, once, twice, three times an episode. So what I’m trying to say is that if you keep at a pointless task for long enough, there will eventually come a point when all of that pointlessness becomes pointful. Or at least I bloody hope there will, because otherwise I’m never going to roperly fix my bike.
The two teams bidding to repair my punctures tonight were the aforementioned Corpus Christi College Cambridge and Merton Mollege Moxford (see, how good would the alliteration bit have been if I’d only had the time). Ready, set, Oxbridge O’Clock.
Even before we start, I sort of want both teams to go through. Corpus so I have the chance to write a sentence thats fully alliterative and fifty words long, and Merton because they have a member who is studying for a DPhil in the Attack Strategies of Birds of Prey with Applications to Designing Defensive Drone (even this guy’s at it with the alliteration) Technology. Kempton, AKA Dr Falcon, is also wearing a leather jacket so you know he’s super cool.
Straight out of the box it seems like my wish might be coming true. Both teams get a few starters and rattle up quickly to decent scores, so it looks like the losers will be guaranteed a play-off place. Gunasekera and Robertson both come in with super early science buzzes for their respective teams, and both captains waste no time waiting for Paxo to finish the question if they know the answer already. He never hears it the first time though, so they have to repeat themselves, and any time that could have been gained is lost anyway.
The lead changes hands like germs at a high-five convention until the half way stage, at which Corpus start digging their fingers in so it can no longer be transferred with such ease. Captain Wang looks like he’s floundering on a music question, musing aloud about whether or not Eartha Kitt was alive in 2008, but he plucks Amy Winehouse out of the ether for the five points. Clutch. He also relishes bonus sets on Old English and Ava DuVernay (in which Paxman pronounces David Oyelowo in a way I’m not sure how to spell).
Merton claw it back to within ten points at 145-155, and whatever happened from this point in both sides would likely be coming back. But all the Oxford quartet can manage from then on is a neg, reducing their score to a less certain-of-a-play-off-place 140 while Corpus take starter after starter to close in on 200. Merton are still in a good psition to make the repechage, but had they snuck a single question in the last few minutes then they’d have been almost certain of a high-scoring loser spot.
Final Score: Corpus Christi 195 - 140 Merton
A high-quality game for the first Oxbridge encounter of the series. Hopefully Merton do make it through, even if for nothing else than I want to write about that Birds of Prey PhD again.

Nike says it has now fixed its shoes, but we can learn a few things about staying in control from how it bricked them in the first place.. Ultimately, everything that was done has resulted into a positive change to IKEA as a whole.. The announcement comes days after the family of Carlos Solis filed a lawsuit against Takata. We'll forgive his gift to the Golden State Warriors of otherwise acceptable high end Stumptown cold brew coffee. Then (he) came up with a fancy theory that there is no loss because coal is in the womb of Mother Earth," he said. The rising talent, described as of the best defensive centres I seen by analyst Corey Evans, was out in full force over the weekend and cemented himself in the eyes of many as a future NBA superstar.. He invited his former coach, the Hurricanes' Don Soldinger, along to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Gemstones are real fascinating elements. The doll, which is sold in stores, is Pennywise from Stephen King books and the movie It had blood around its mouth and strange black marks on its forehead. Sam Waller Interview
Sam Waller co-runs, the UK based Central Library, “a shop in the North West of England that sells zines, DVDs and other interesting bits and pieces.” He’s also part of the current resurgence of quality independent BMX media with his Red Steps magazine. In addition to that he finds the time to contribute to Challenger with his quarterly column, ‘Notes From A Fancy Island’ and of course, ride. And, when you talk to Sam, you can tell that riding reigns supreme.
Sam and I email back and forth fairly often because of the column but also about other random stuff like old spots, concrete skateparks, music, etc. It’s fun to email with Sam so I figured it would also be fun to ask Sam some more in-depth questions. Hit the link below for the full interview.
All photos by Gaz Hunt. Thanks, Gaz!
I know you live in Manchester, England now but where did you grow up and what is your BMX origin story? I grew up in the complete middle of nowhere in a place called Colton in the south of the Lake District. Whilst the countryside in film and television is often shown as a tranquil, quaint place, the reality is a fair bit different, and Colton in particular seemed like a hotbed for strange stuff going on. Only recently a large farmhouse was burned down by a wild woman who owned loads of pigs. She was exiled from the county, but the pigs remained to cause havoc.
Anyway, my older brother has played guitar since he was six or seven, but as I was a useless at it and couldn’t get my hands to move properly, I felt obliged to find a similar all-encompassing past-time.
I was mad on Formula 1 racing for a while (thoughts go out to the Schumacher family), and I went to a karate lesson once (a hobby quickly scrapped after the whole hour was spent being taught how to bow honourably), but up until the age of 12 or 13 it just felt like I was dawdling about.
All of this changed when, for some reason I’m not entirely sure of, me and my friends decided to make some jumps and drops and stuff to ride on our mountain bikes in some woods near a dual carriageway.
One of my friends knew some older lads from nearby who had proper bikes and Little Devil hoodies, so I think they must have planted the seed of raditude with him, but I think at that time I was just happy to be out the house and not playing Tekken 2. We later found out that the woodland we’d chosen was a popular dogging site frequented by truck drivers (I'm not sure if 'dogging' exists in America - maybe look it up), and quickly moved our spades and everything into another forest. By that point the damage was done and my mind was snagged.
After a bit of bouncing about on a mountain bike, I then splashed out on a second hand Standard that someone had painted post-box red, affixed some stunt nubs and never looked back (or lookbacked, for that matter).
The nearby town of Ulverston had a pretty big riding and skating scene, but thinking now about us lot trying to lay down ‘street style’ in this small historic market town, we may as well have been the Jamaican bobsleigh team — the rough ledges were strictly for stalls, and the closest thing to a flatbank was a grass verge round the back of a Texaco garage.
What were some of your biggest inspirations as a kid and what about now? I always think about how the 16 year old me would probably make fun of some of the things I'm into now. Is that the case with you at all? Apart from the receding hairline and the slight increase in responsibilities, I think I’ve stayed pretty much exactly the same since I was 16. Back then I think my favourite film was probably Natural Born Killers, and my favourite album was maybe something like Bad Moon Rising by Sonic Youth. Whilst I’ve maybe expanded my interests a little, I’ve pretty much been in a rut since then.
I’m not into memes or internet humour in the slightest, but I remember someone once showing me a video of a wrestling fan in America crying and shouting, “It’s still real to me, dammit.” That’s how I feel about a lot of things I was into back then. A lot of people who I went to school with moved on from being into music and films and pissing around on bikes, whilst I’m still snagged on it all, listening to The Minutemen and wearing check shirts. It’s pretty stupid really.
What's The Fancy Island? Good question. Just next to Strangeways prison and only a mere stone’s throw from Manchester’s slick centre, lies a true rat-pit of questionable activity. I’ve seen loads of stuff happen here, such as an aggressive man chase a prostitute with a two-by-four and a creep lying in an alley trying to lure small boys into his lair.
In amongst all this, there’s loads of naff wholesale shops that sell everything from low-end Halloween costumes to fake Air Jordans made out of cardboard and fuzzy felt. All these shops have mad names like EEZZEE and Vibe Centre.
Getting to the point now, coming up with titles for things is pretty difficult, so a few years ago when I was cobbling together a zine, I nicked the name Urban Mist from one of these shops, and then, when I went to set up a Tumblr during the carefree pre-Instragram era, I nabbed ‘Fancy Island’ from a similar establishment.
I think Fancy Island has closed down now, but it’s no doubt been replaced with yet another shop with a daft name selling cheap batteries and t-shirts with swear words on the front.
Whilst I’m explaining names, I’ll state that Red Steps is a classic spot in Manchester that I ride past on my way to work every day. It boasts a rusty, needle-thin flatrail, a few small stair-sets (that are indeed red) and a large flow of gormless students to crash into. I’m not too sure why I named a magazine after it, but it just struck me as a funny name for a spot and I was struggling to think of anything else.
One thing I struggle with is balancing how to take BMX seriously while balancing a sense of humor about it as well; i.e. it's pretty goofy but is also this amazing vehicle for new experiences, ideas, and a pretty incredible community. Do you ever think about this? Like with most things in life (except crucial necessities like eating and breathing), riding bikes is pretty stupid and abstract if you try and think about it too hard. That said, I don’t see why bike riding should look goofy (apart from actual goofy-footed grinding - as a self-confessed goofy grinder myself I’ve got a lot of time for George D, Ralph and Dave McDermott) — riding is loads better than pretty much all other activities, but it’s constantly being made to look daft, when it could so easily look dope.
I think to stay juiced and not turn sour, you’ve got to completely ignore most things going on with riding and stick firmly to the bits that you like. I treat riding like music or films or anything else. In the same way I don’t go to the cinema to watch big summer blockbusters, I don’t spend my free time watching Corey Martinez edits or endless hours of footage from some zany mega-comp.
I’m a simple man. As far as riding is concerned, I like smith grinds, bottles of Heineken, Galaxy chocolate, black and white photos, sitting on benches and talking complete nonsense. The rest of it is irrelevant to me.
I constantly hear/read people complain about the lack of BMX magazines but there's so much cool stuff being printed right now. We've discussed this in email a bit but it seems weird that people are complaining. It's almost like people just have an idea of what they think a magazine should be and if it doesn't have look or read a certain way they are just confused. How do you feel about all of this? A solid group of people do buy things and support these independent projects and whatnot, but I think it’ll take a while for the loud-mouthed Instagram warlords to come to terms with the fact that the new magazines around might have different names to the ones they used to subscribe to 15 years ago. I suppose it’s maybe easier to talk about the lack of magazines out there than actually go to the effort of seeking them out, but having said that, it’s not exactly hard to find stuff these days.
I remember years ago hunting down anything beyond Dig or Ride was an absolute hassle involving a lot of e-mail mither and blind faith - but now with yourself, Berks St. and 90East stocking interesting stuff in America, me and Clarky doing Central Library over here and the newly formulated Wiretap down under, it’s easier than ever for anyone to get their hands on zines and DVDs and all that.
The new stuff that’s coming out now is ten times better than Dig or Ride ever were anyway. Endless contest reports and dull bike checks have fallen by the wayside, and I haven’t seen a photo of Jimmy Levan’s zebra-print leggings in years. Things are really looking up.
What do you do for work? Thoughts on pursuing money via BMX and also what's the best job you've ever had? By day I work in an office writing stuff for a clothes shop. As you can imagine, trying to come up with an interesting way to talk about the 659th blue shirt you’ve seen this week can get a bit tough, but I can’t complain too much really. The office is fairly warm and there’s a kettle in the kitchen.
As for pursuing ‘serious wonga’ via riding, I’m one step ahead of you. Central Library has just received big investment from Duncan Bannatyne and Deborah Meaden (of Dragon’s Den fame), meaning we’re finally able to stock all those bizarre Caramac-coloured tyres that real bike shops seem to stock. We’re also expanding our print line to offer crime fiction and the Goosebumps novels. My main aim in life is to become one of those creepy industry characters who spends their time sniffing around young and naïve talent in the hopes of flogging a few ‘dad caps’.
My finest job was probably working for my dad in the family trade of dry stone walling (which explains my surname). I’m not sure if dry stone walls exist in America, but they’re those fairly humble looking stone walls you see dividing up the fields and forests around the English countryside.
Anyway, building them isn’t too bad as far as manual labour goes. When it’s raining and you’re miles up some hill wallowing in the mud lugging big stones around with nothing more for lunch than a chicken and mushroom Pot Noodle and a Penguin biscuit, then it’s a little miserable – but on a good day when the sun is shining and you’re working with ‘good stone’, it’s hard to beat.
The best days were when my dad would fall asleep just a few minutes before the end of the lunch hour, basically extending the break for at least another 45 minutes. Thinking about this job now, I’m not sure why I ever gave it up.
Do you have any other hobbies besides riding? Yeah, but I’d say the lines were pretty blurred. This is maybe a pretty boring answer, but I suppose riding lends itself to other hobbies pretty well. I might be wrong, but I don’t think keen swimmers or budding javelin-throwers get into photography or making videos in quite the same way. It’s sort of like the ‘pillars of hip-hop’ or something – riding, taking pictures, messing round with video stuff and generally snooping around all fits together nicely (or at least it does in my peppered mind).
It’s not like I’m slipping on my Etnies t-shirt for my weekly two hour power sesh and then the next night I’m wearing some short-shorts down at the climbing wall. Even when I’m on holiday with my wife, I’m still just snooping around the same way - we’re not buying tickets for some naff rollercoaster or dining out at exclusive restaurants with Abe Froman.
Are you able to take time off of riding and not feel like you're missing out or feel guilty? I have one friend who really goes in on the guilt tripping if I don't ride. Related: You said you like sitting on benches. Can you do that on a nice day? At the age of 28, I’d like to feel like I can just about deal with a few missed sessions. Obviously I still need a comprehensive run down of spots seshed and feats accomplished when I’m away, but it’d be mad if I was out all the time. The human body can’t handle that much raditude.
Fear of things going un-photographed does creep in sometimes, but Clarky will have filmed it anyway, and Gaz and Wozzy are better photographers than me, so if they’re about then hopefully someone caught the action.
Moving onto the subject of benches, these babies really come into play during my dinner break at work. I get on fine with everyone there, but when the clock strikes twelve I’m not going to be sat in the office spilling reheated chilli over my keyboard… I’m straight out into the city centre on full sit-off mode – hopefully getting into some daft conversation with one of Manchester’s many vagabonds.
A few months ago I was sat in town when I was approached by a fairly scruffy gentleman who was bleeding loads from his forehead after someone kneed him in the skull. The rest of my lunch break was spent trying to sort him out a bit. One meal deal, some wet wipes and a pack of king-skins later, he seemed alright. You don’t get these hijinks sat inside all day.
I was just thumbing through the new Red Steps (nice job) and I just realized how much I enjoy your interviews -- what is it that you like about interviews? Not trying to stroke the ego here but you are really good at it... Cheers. Any ego strokes are much appreciated. This maybe sounds a bit daft, but I want to know everything. This is probably evident to the people who know me, but I’m a complete mither, completely hassling everyone with questions all the time.
This pesky nature extends into everything, meaning that I spend a lot of time reading a lot of interviews about the things that I’m into. I buy a lot of old copies of magazines like Wire, Ray Gun and Sidewalk on eBay, and even though the interviews contained within those pages might have been conducted in the corner of a pub maybe 25 years ago, they’re still worth reading today.
A proper interview with a little intro and some photos laid out nicely on a page… it’s mint – it’s a finished thing – sort of like a well-edited video or something. I know a lot of people are into ‘podcasts’ these days, and that’s fair enough, but to me – they’re not complete enough. I don’t want to hear people say ‘um’ and ‘err’ all the time, and I want something sick to look at (and by that, I don’t mean a load of pundits sat around a table with headphones on).
I’m going to rattle on here whilst I’ve got the chance. Anyone reading this who gets the opportunity to answer questions for an interview, a ‘bike check’ or anything else…don’t just write a lazy sentence for each answer – go mad. Tell some funny stories. Or if you’ve got nothing to say, just make something up. No one cares about how responsive your headtube angle is or how you ‘usually just cut the bars down’. This could be your only chance to air your thoughts into the wider world, and you’re going on about what PSI you put in your tyres? COME ON PLEASE TRY HARDER YOU BORING GIMPS.
(above) Spread from Sam’s zine, Latvia Photos. (below) Cover of Sam’s zine, Around Town.
You also make photo zines/books not related to riding. Do you have any high art aspirations with this stuff? No real aspirations I’m afraid. Wine gives me bad heartburn, so I generally try and swerve anything resembling a gallery opening schmooze-off. As I was sort of saying before, making photo zines is just an extension of everything else. I like taking photographs, so it makes sense to put them together. It’s all pretty small-time really – it’s not like I’m getting thousands printed.
To be honest, it’s all a complete faff that I could easily avoid by not bothering and just sitting around watching American power-dramas, but it’s good to have stuff to look back on – even if it’s just a 40 page zine that nine people will see.
Crouching under a tattered old curtain processing rolls of film every night whilst being mithered by my cat isn’t particularly glamorous and I’d imagine there are probably easier ways to get cosy with the artistic elite.
What's your favorite slang word? Going back to my walling days, my dad uses some pretty intriguing slang terms. Unlike inner-city slang, which will usually be documented in music or useless BBC3 comedies, these more rustic words don’t get much recognition. I don't use these terms myself, but I certainly respect them. Here’s a few choice cuts…
“A few skins on the job” – a large workforce “Keitel” – a fairly humble work-jacket “Bait” – lunch “Bray it – hit it “Kessen” – when an unclipped sheep falls over onto its back and can’t get up due to its weight. This happens more often than you’d think.
You can buy scoop up a copy of Sam’s magazine, Red Steps, in the Challenger web shop here, look at the online shop, The Central Library, that Sam runs with Clarky here, and check out some of his other photo zines/books here.

Is Your Vehicle Suspension System Faulty? Here’s How To Fix It
Generally, people buy cars for their comfort while commuting to work as well as performing many other chores. However, you can expect a comfortable ride only from a well-maintained car. While it is only possible with a fine-tuned suspension system, along with other parts.
The car's suspension system has been improvised a lot in recent times, but still, problems arise when a car has to tussle with the bumps or potholes on the roads.
Being an owner, it is your responsibility to maintain your car suspension up to the level so that you should not deal with compromised comfort. But, how do you realize the issues with your suspension system? Read on here this tale-tell signs about a faulty suspension system while your car needs some sort of car maintenance.
Does your car bounce in excess while crossing the bumps?
Suspension is responsible for a smooth drive, especially while crossing bumps or potholes. It should be robust enough to cross all the hurdles quite comfortably. If there is a sign of discomfort while crossing your car over a bump or pothole, your suspension system has been damaged.
The shock absorbers usually diminish the excess jerks. These are always filled with a fluid that usually leaks causing a suspension system not to work properly. In some vehicles, struts do the trick while worn out struts often produce the knocking sound.
In case, you notice such issues while driving your car, drive toward the Service My Car for a car repair.
Does Steering Your Car Not Seem Difficult?
The suspension has a lot to do while you drive. If you feel that your car behaves unusually during a turn, it is a problem either with your steering or the suspension system.
The most common reasons for such issues are the low level of steering fluids, damaged control arms or defective power steering pumps.
If we talk about the control arms, they are essential to steer your car. The steering is connected with the wheels with control arms. In this mechanism, a bush also works to absorb the shocks and they stay with the control arm.
However, the worn-out bushes can create an issue when you try to accelerate. You often get some noise such as rattling due to improper steering while your start to drive. However, it would not be wise to drive in such a condition as it may turn into unexpected damage.
However, you can take services of Service My Car while car scanning and diagnostics help in locating the potential issues with your car before they turn into something hazardous. However, you can opt for a car recovery during serious trouble.
Does One Side Of Your Car Sit Low?
Do you notice an uneven standing of your car even on a flat surface? Your car's suspensions surely have an issue. It produces a clunking noise while you drive over a bump or a pothole.
However, you have to check the tyres whether they are properly inflated or not. If it is not the case and the suspension system emits the squeaking sound, drive to a trusted mechanic as soon as possible. You need a reliable mechanic such as Service My Car for any sort of issues with your car. You can avail yourself of a car engine repair, car transmission repair or a timing belt replacement on-demand. If you need any kinds of other services like MOT check in Manchester or any other locations then you can visit Service My Car through the website or app.
Does Your Car Plunge When You Push The Brake Paddles?
Your car suddenly nose-dives when you apply the brakes instantly. It slopes forward once you apply the brakes, slopes on either side during a turn, and slopes backwards during quick acceleration. Your suspension has been damaged. Get your shock absorber or struts checked at a trusted workshop such as Service My Car as soon as possible.
Besides, you also opt for other services such as car wash or car detailing if the mud invites corrosion to your car's lower part, specifically the suspension.
Do You Encounter Frequent Wheel Misalignment?
A poor suspension system may drag your vehicle to one side, especially while driving.
However, an issue with tyres or the brakes might be the reason for frequent misalignment. Besides, improper tyres inflation might cause an inappropriate imbalance of steering. You need to keep a check over tyre inflation as it directly impacts the suspension. If there is something wrong with your tyres, the suspension also gets affected.
An improper wheel alignment is generally visible if there is uneven wear and tear of tyres.
The wheel misalignment might hint at worn-out suspension. In case, you have noticed other signs of the damaged suspension. Reach to the Service My Car for a quick resolution of your issues as well as other car service on demand.
As already mentioned, the suspension is a crucial part of your car when it comes to safety. You will not wish to be part of something unexpected while there are preventive measures available.
