BAT Day 5: GRILLFEST!
Hello!
Today we moved accomodation and are now staying in huts near the beach on Sentosa Island, Singapore. We are about 25 minutes from the point formally recognised as the southernmost point of Continental Asia.
We started our day slowly, with a shocking revelation about one of my brother’s eating habits and hygiene, before rushing to get breakfast and check out of the hotel.
We moved over to Sentosa island and settled into our pods, before heading out on a beach walk. Immediately we discovered that our trip coincided with Grillfest, a food festival lasting for 3 days, in which we could buy all manner of grilled goods.
We moved further down the shore, mentally noting the activities that we could do tomorrow, before reaching the bridge to the southernmost point. We crossed over and ducked into a cove, where my dad and my younger siblings engaged in some frisbee, before my little sister and I played a modern approximation of Charades.
We then rushed up the wooden towers on the island to reach the top in order to photo the sunset.
After ensuring that we had good photos then we returned to our huts to change into smarter clothes and engage in the Grillfestivities.
After chowing down on various foods, (One Little Brother got some Lobster and Dad got a chicken wrap), then we returned to the check in area/hotel in charge of the huts in order to plan tomorrow.

It can be hard enough to organize an event that organizes a group of people in Toronto. Trying to find a restaurant that not only accommodates everyone but also happily satiates them can be hard. No one wants to wait in a line or get shoved into a corner. There are choices for the talkative and rowdy, such as Wvrst which has a casual, beer hall mentality with beer flights and duck fries to make everyone happy. Or, if you like sushi and a lot of yelling, try out the infectiously vibrant Japanese restaurant Guu Izakaya. 
Sometimes you need a little more class than sass. Cluny has an atmosphere that warrants a little dressing up, but will happily welcome those in stretchy pants who intend to do Cluny’s bread products justice. In today’s day and age, stretchy pants always have to be an option.
Determine the attitude of the company you keep and match the style of restaurant and ultimately everyone will be happy, whether you are hosting a discerning aunt or your friend who always seems to have a mustard stain on his lapel. 
The food photos from Fishman Lobster Clubhouse are so voluminous, so mountainous, that it seems that this restaurant might scoff at a party of one. All parties are welcome, but the platters of seafood at Fishman Lobster Clubhouse seem more aptly suited for a ravenous group. Tables shudder under the weight of crab legs or Hong Kong style lobster. Floor to ceiling fish tanks house gigantic crustaceans. There is a lobster tower on the menu, if towers of seafood fit the bill for your group. As a warning, it weighs 50 pounds and costs almost $700 (for around 10 people), but it may be economical depending on the size of the stomachs in your company.
Recommended for Group Friendly because: Lobsters and snow crabs in ample quantity for any size group.

Since Hong Kong-born chef Susur Lee arrived in Canada in 1978, he’s built a reputation on inventive cuisine that fuses the dishes of his homeland with other global influences. Lee is his flagship Toronto restaurant, with a menu that is built around sharable tapas-sized plates. Expect the unexpected with a mashup of Asian and French flavours. Chef Lee’s Singapore Slaw has been a fixture on the menu for years and is well worth the splurge. The presentation is impressive, with the salad mixed at the table and sculpted into a tower. Inventive ingredients range from daikon to fennel seedlings and edible flower petals. Save room for an inventive dessert, such as the French and Chinese Tong Yuen with a rice dumpling, chocolate nougat, Indian pastry and strawberry/creme brûlée. What?!?

When you walk into the carbon bar, you feel like you have stepped into the future, with sky high ceilings and glowing white lamps. There is a lot of history in this building (it was once a Disney dance studio!) but now it is all delicious BBQ bites, like the wood fired sweet and spicy ribs with coleslaw and dill pickles. There are also a host of snacks (crocodile bites, anyone?) and craft cocktails that are impressively balanced. Private dining is divine here, with a chef’s table option for a group up to 14, or for larger groups there is the Green Room, an upstairs private dining space which gives a prime view of the dining room.
Recommended for Group Friendly because: BBQ heaven and a private dining room – nothing wrong with that.

Take the “a” off of “Planta” and you will realize what this restaurant is all about (and it’s not the hokey pokey). Marketed as plant-based cuisine rather than vegan, this fresh and airy restaurant specializes in delicious food from around the globe that any meat-eater would be proud to chomp. Planta burgers have queso, pickles, buffalo aioli and spiced fries. Enjoy cashew mozzarella, ranch dressing and cauliflower on your pizza. The creative and innovative dishes are plated beautifully and and the light and airy dining room and private dining area will impress your group.

Luma is a wonderful restaurant to stop by if you are in the heart of the city. Right on King Street around everything that is buzzing, the warm wood within the restaurant offsets the surrounding hustle and bustle. Luma is an Oliver & Bonacini restaurant that has many menus to complement the time of day you choose to dine. You have lunch, dinner or dessert, of course, but there is also a post 3pm lounge menu. The menu is seafood heavy and includes such gems as clam carbonara and miso cod with maple syrup. The Manhattans are named after neighbourhoods in Toronto (the High Park; the North York). It is worth saving room for the desserts, with an amazing “chocolate bar” which is like a soft dark chocolate brownie layered with banana and peanut butter ice cream. Heaven.

There are three private dining restaurant rooms, one for 12 guests, one for between 12-20 and one for 22-30. You can also fully buy out the restaurant for an event with 100 guests. Whether you go with a small crowd or a giant one, Blu is the perfect place to slurp some pasta with someone you love (or at the very least, like). Try the truffle wild boar ragu with wild mushrooms over sweet potato and ricotta gnocchi for a dish that will make your eyes roll back into your head.

Japanese restaurant. Tapas restaurant. Drinking establishment which serves food to accompany the drinks (at least according to the definition of Izakaya). Guu Izakaya does it all. This lively and energetic restaurant opened in 2011 after being acclaimed in Vancouver. Communal style tables encourage strangers to get friendly as they share the experience of eating Japanese comfort food. Baked oysters, beef tongue, almond tofu, sashimi salad and bibimbap are some of the options, and all are exquisite. Dishes are great for sharing, and you can sit at the bar to watch the food being cooked. Don’t miss the cocktail and sake list. A couple of drinks will put you in the right Guu mood.

Even so, the backdrop for your dining experience is absolutely stunning with high ceilings and may have you convinced that the Eiffel Tower is within walking distance. Standing on the deck of the Captain Carl, his 34-foot lobster boat, Jeff Woodman reflects on how the rocky shores of Spruce Head, Maine, have become an unlikely frontline in both President Donald Trump’s global tariff wars and America’s battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
“Lobstering has been a family business. I’m third-generation,” says Woodman. “But it’s changing.”
Maine’s world-famous lobster industry is sinking. For years, China had been the top buyer of U.S. lobster, 80% of which is caught off the state’s coast. But when Beijing retaliated for a second round of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, it slapped a 25% levy on the elite treat and reduced its tariff on Canadian catches. As the Trump Administration continues battling with the E.U., Europe, too, has been buying more from Canada; Ottawa and Belgium signed a trade deal three years ago that eliminated tariffs on Canadian lobster, while U.S. catches retain an 8% tax.
As a result, by early this year, Maine’s year-on-year lobster exports to China and Europe had both dropped by about 50%. The market for Homarus Americanus has shrunk to little more than domestic consumption and a limited number of wealthy epicures in Singapore, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, says Annie Tselikis, the executive director of the Maine Lobster Dealers’ Association.
“Then comes COVID,” Tselikis says. The major U.S. buyers of Maine lobster – casinos, cruise ships, restaurants, resorts, and corporate campuses — all shut down. The state’s lobstermen and women are still venturing out, but about a third of them have received nearly $15 million in federal Paycheck Protection Program loans to help them cope with the COVID-19 related losses.

Mainers aren’t used to being caught up in national crises, other than wars. Despite the long tradition of Beltway residents flocking to the state each summer, America’s Vacationland has an ambivalent relationship with the federal government. Policies and programs devised with good intentions in Washington haven’t always survived the voyage Down East as well as a plane full of live lobster can make the 10-hour trip in a “cloud pack” – tails down, claws up – from a warehouse in Spruce Head to Europe.
Nevertheless, the northeastern state and its embattled lobstermen and women have become one of many focal points in the upcoming election. As Republicans seek to hold on to their Senate majority, Maine is home to one of the toughest races, in which Republican Sen. Susan Collins is locked in a tight race with her well-funded opponent Sara Gideon, the Democratic speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.
With control of the Senate and presidency at stake, one of the nation’s least populous states has assumed a disproportionate political importance. Trump visited the inland city of Bangor on June 5 and threatened to slap a new tariff on European cars if the Europeans didn’t immediately eliminate their tariff on American lobster. On June 24, he ordered the Agriculture Department to offer the lobster industry a bailout similar to those given to farmers also caught in his trade war with China.
So far, the results of those efforts only appear to have validated decades of local Republican skepticism about the federal government’s competence to manage the economy. Representatives of the $1.4 billion-a-year lobster industry, along with Collins and Maine’s independent Sen. Angus King, who caucuses with the Democrats, and the state’s two House representatives, Democrats Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden, have met with staffers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its Foreign Agricultural Service, only to find that the department, not surprisingly, doesn’t know much about lobstering. At one meeting, an Agriculture Department representative asked a member of the Lobster Dealer’s Association, “Why don’t you just concentrate on China?”
The state’s politicians have found themselves tutoring government bureaucrats who are more familiar with corn than crustaceans while they try to understand why they’re trapped in a battle over China’s poaching of American technology. “It’s very frustrating to be caught in a trade war over intellectual property,” says Tselikis. “It’s not like the soybean industry. We’re sort of in a no-man’s land.”
Not only have lobster sales plummeted, keeping a lobster business running has become harder as Trump’s tariff wars have escalated, says Woodman. The burly lobsterman says bait and fuel are more expensive, as are digital water thermometers and the satellite technology and color screen he uses to navigate Penobscot Bay. Lobster pots, now made of steel instead of wood, cost $70 to $90 each, thanks in part to Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel, he says. A new boat, he adds, can cost $100,000.
Even if there is a truce in the trade wars, lobstermen are facing heavy seas ahead. Over the past 15 years, Gulf of Maine has been warming faster than 99% of the world’s other saltwater bodies, according to a study from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and lobster are migrating to cooler waters. The state’s fleet is aging, access to capital is limited, and wages are dropping. A “sternman,” who baits and sets the traps and hauls them in, used to make $30,000 a year, but is now making about $23,000, according to Woodman. Entry level jobs in the industry pay $15 to $17 an hour, says Tselikis.
Without newcomers willing to apprentice themselves, learn the trade, and spend long hours on wet slippery decks in cold seas at that pay grade, it has become harder to find crew members. Sometimes Woodman’s 74-year-old father, for whom his boat is named, and his seven-year-old son help crew for him.
The influx of funds from the forgivable PPP loans has helped some people in the industry. According to the Small Business Administration, some 1,360 Maine lobstermen – about one in every three – have received loans of less than $150,000, more than workers in any other industry in the state. But as in other industries, the biggest players got more from the federal trough. Four of the state’s largest lobster companies hauled in $350,000 to $1 million, according to the SBA.
Those who didn’t get enough federal cash to weather the multiple crises facing the industry are learning to adapt. French fries are actually not so bad. But the only thing is that if you have too much of it it can really get on your nerves . Recently when I was in Singapore vacationing , I was having a really really hard time trying to decide what to eat when there was no vegetarian option be it in Sentosa island , Universal studios or even the cafeteria at the Sea aquarium .It was something out of pure desperation that I had to survive for three consecutive days with just french fries as the only vegetarian option. In the past 30 yrs of my life ,I have never been at so much of a loss as to what I should eat ;the only options around me being seafood which I will never ever be able to push down my throat and french fries .The smell of the seafood itself was so nauseating to me but in the oriental countries seafood is the most sought after and by that I also refer to the other type of non vegetarian options. We spent the first day in the Sentosa island. It kick started with a cabin car ride to the island. It was a city within a city. I had been only to a few amusement parks which were huge but this was humongous. Hordes of tourists thronged about and after buying a ticket I was pretty confused as to where I should start because the a large variety of attractions were offered . Ranging from the butterfly forest to the bird park , the wonders of nature were for all to see. I came to the Madame Tussuads wax museum a soon as I entered . Strolling by casually with cup full of fresh fruits in hand, I soon found myself in front of a gigantic man made water fall and the famous Sentosa lion . I tried to take some photos of the rainbow coloured parrots there but the park officials restricted me from doing so . The Light and Sound show was held later in the evening around 7 and was something spectacular. The 3D laser beams were in perfect sync with the oohs and aahs of tourists. I was in complete awe of the Flower Dome and the Cloud Castle ,and later decided to indulge in dimsums,one of my favourites, only to find a chef vigorously cutting a lobster. Right next to it was a crab resigned to it s fate . I won t bother u with the rest of the details ; I m sure all my other veggie friends must be having their fair share of nightmares. Once through with the inspection of my dimsums, I made my way out only to find myself in the Flower Dome again where it is perpetual spring. Universal Studios was a sight to behold with its own Sea aquarium full of varied aquatic life - blue frogs, spider crabs,eels,starfish, rayfish to mention only a few. Candylicious : the candy store - a child s dream come true , was a store full of candies and other goodies too. They had shopping carts high enough for a child of about 6-7years . Sections were allotted to chocolates from Kit Kat, Hersheys, M&M's among others and candies. Here my dear nephew bought a pair of disgusting looking boxers . Here, I was greeted politely by streetside vendors offering more potato wedges and caramel popcorn. The Universal Studios were identical to the Disneyland in Hong Kong. The only difference being that the latter was full of rides for all age groups but Universal Studios had both . There were plenty of souvenirs to choose from and all the comic characters who have featured in animated films produced by Universal Studios were there. Each section had been assigned a comic character be it the Smurfs or the Minions. Had it not been for some indian restaurants I would not have managed to come back home. After each meal came a loud burp -from my side of the table - my compliments and blessings to the chef. My advice to those travelling to Singapore would be to have an umbrella handy in case mother nature decides to shower her blessings upon you in her fashion and of course several packets of packaged meals . Very soon I shall set out on a new adventure without any pre planning. Only to find myself staying in the godowns or garages of strangers and sampling the varied local dishes- veg of course .Until next time then .
