Q1 - Whose name did they take? Kai's father insisted that Dec take Kai's name and become a Havertz. Did Dec do it? Did he keep Rice despite not always wanting the association with his father? Did they double barrel their names like Trossard-Tierney? Did Kai's father even care considering he's got his new wonderful family in Monaco? Did he insist on Kai taking Rice as another way of signifying he was leaving Kai behind?

Q2 - Kai's father is a piece of shit. Does Jorgi still work for him? I'm thinking about him ignoring the worst parts of Kai's father because he truly loved his job but when he starts dating Reiss and falls in love and brings him to work events on his arm, the disproval from Kai's father becomes much too hard to ignore

Q3 - Let's talk about the house! Did one of them move into the other's place? Did they get a new house on their wedding day as like a gift from Kai's father who used it to buy Dec's gratitude? Did Mikel have to arrange a house for them and navigate the various demands each of them had that seemingly opposed each other? Did they have to endure house shopping with each other?

Q4 -Kai clearly loves routine (and Dec clearly loves Kai because he knew that routine so easily when Leah asked) and sticks to it. Does Dec have a routine? Does Kai know it? If he does, what's his routine like?

Q5 - Feel like this might be spoilery but did they go on any "dates" before getting married? Talk on the phone? Have business meetings with their representatives? Or did they meet for the first time on the wedding day? Did WDBs meet Kai before the wedding? Had Jorgi met Dec? What did everyone know about the other before the wedding?

3. good question, makes me think LOLLLLL initially I wanted deckai to live in central London like in a penthouse/townhouse, no dogs. but I remembered about kai's dogs, which became a vital characterisation for Declan lol, and dogs need a space. was going to have kai into supercars (he's an F1 fan in the story) = needs proper garage to store his cars. in the end he only drives his Mercedes and Declan his Range Rover lol.

secondly, I wanted to have them live in Declan and Leah's childhood home, but given how shitty dec's dead dad was, I scraped the idea.

sooooooooooooo. I'd say kai wasn't fussy about his new home in London, miserable England. he just wanted a vast space for his dogs to play catch. Declan likes clean, minimalistic decor. kai doesn't mind. it was a quick process. if u notice so far, there's not a hint/an ounce of personality from how I describe their house LMAO. no arts. no nothing. just the custom made designer sofa where kai's kids can't hop on :(

4. you know what? Declan is more like "I work 9-5, 5 days a week, and the rest of my time I spend it around my husband" type of man. kinda boring, aside from his WDBz get together and some sports night with idk his other friend LOL. very devoted tho; dinner at home, Saturday is lunch date time, Sunday is doing whatever kai wants (flying to Monaco/germany/spain/qatar to watch an F1 grand prix or whatever filthy rich cpl do - rarely golfing or playing tennis, declan's fave sports, bc kai is not into them lmaooooooooo) (damn is Declan insane or pathetic... u tell me...)

James was sitting in the conference room, trying not to jump over the table and strangle Sam. The man had been teasing him relentlessly after Steve gave him the details on what had happened at the HYDRA base. What upset him the most was that birdbrain was right. He wanted to see you again. You had piqued his interest, and that was hard to do. 

At first, James was upset at the stupid little game. However, after calming down on the jet ride back to the compound, he couldn’t help the intrigue. You were a mutant that had bested two super soldiers with absolute ease. You even won the bet, claiming a date as your prize. Why would you choose to go out on a date with him of all people? He needed to know. 

When he thought about the mischief in your dark gray eyes and the way your lips twisted into that wicked smile, he felt... something. Butterflies, maybe.  Wait! Am I developing a crush?  This rattled him to his core. When was the last time he had had a crush on someone? Why would he develop one now on you? When will Wilson shut the fuck up so they can go over what was found on the drive. He has  so many questions. 

Fury finally shuts Sam up with a rather obnoxious clearing of his throat. “So, after thoroughly going through the files on the drive Smoke was able to secure, we have found some interesting developments. It would seem HYDRA is working on some type of new AI. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to crack the code as to what kind of AI it is yet or what they are planning to use it for. Tony is working on figuring that out as we speak.”

The billionaire was sitting in a chair by the window, typing furiously on his phone. “I’ll have it cracked by supper. It would seem HYDRA is getting a little better at encrypting their data files. But, they will never be better than me.” 

James rolls his eyes at the smugness in Tony’s voice. 

Fury continues. “Now, I won’t be sure until Tony is done, but I have a suspicion they are working with another entity on this little project of theirs. I have SHIELD agents looking into it now. Maybe, we’ll get a hit soon if they are.”

“Could it be Hammer? He is Tony’s rival and has made it his lifelong mission to take him out,” Natasha chimed in. 

“I’m not sure,” Fury said, shaking his head. “Still too early to say.”

“Do the files have the other locations HYDRA are occupying?” Steve asked. “I’d like to put an end to their project sooner rather than later. We can find out more if we take down their other bases.”

“Yes, they have bases in Qatar, Denmark and Alaska that we know for sure. We’re hoping that Tony will turn up other locations.” Fury looked up at the door and smiled. Looking at James, he said, “Looks like your new girlfriend has come to cash in on that date.”

James’s eyes widen as he turns to the door. You walk in wearing blue jeans, black sneakers, and a purple shirt under your open black leather jacket. You look casual, but to James, you look amazing. Your hair is loose and frames your face. You don’t have on makeup, but those dark grey eyes of yours stand out. He doesn’t realize he’s staring until you look at him and wink.

He looks down quickly, hoping no one else noticed. Hearing Sam chuckle, James looked up at the man and he waggles his eyebrows at him.  Of course this asshole saw. Sam wasn’t the only one who caught it. Everyone was giving him knowing looks and smirks.

“So, what did I miss?” You ask plopping down in the empty seat across from James. 

“Not much. Tony is still trying to crack their code,” Fury tells you. “You wouldn’t be able to be of some assistance with that, now would you?”

You hum thoughtfully. “I did overhear some of the higher ups talking about protocol RECS. Was never able to find out exactly what it was about, though.”

Tony tried it, but nothing. “Sorry, kid. Nothing is coming up.”

You shrugged. “I’m sure you’ll figure it out soon, Stark.”

 “That, I will, my dear,” Tony said, never looking up from his device. 

“Smoke, Other than Qatar, Denmark and Alaska, do you know of any more bases HYDRA has?” Steve asked. 

“They have one in the Cayman Islands. They were going to transfer me out there. The views would’ve been great,” you chuckle. “I know there has to be more, but I had bigger fish to fry.” You look at James with that wicked smile he finds suddenly irresistible. “Talking about fish, I do hope you’ve made the reservations. 7 should be good, no?”

All eyes were now on James. He felt the blush creeping up his neck. “And, how do you know 7 works for me? What if I’m busy?” His voice is steady, despite the butterflies causing havoc in his gut. 

You laugh. “I’m sure you can get out of your  plans quite easily, Sergeant.”

 James raises an eyebrow at you. “Are you sure about that?” He finds himself locked in a staring contest with you. Your eyes are intense and he suddenly feels completely naked. Could you read minds, too? Were you reading his right now?

 Fury’s phone goes off and James is the first to blink. He doesn’t miss the way your face lights up with victory before turning his attention to the DIrector. 

“Hill. Send what you’ve found. Thank you.” Fury hangs up and pockets the phone. He looks at Tony. “Hill is sending some pictures she’s found. They may confirm that HYDRA is working with others.”

“Mr. Stark, I have received Agent Hill’s files,” FRIDAY spoke. 

“Put 'em up on the screen,” he says, still tapping away on his phone. 

The AI does as he says and several pictures pop up on the monitor at the front of the room. They are of a base in some snowy part of the world. They seem familiar, but you aren’t sure where you know them from. 

Fury calls Hill back. “What am I looking at?” He puts the phone on speaker. 

“Still not sure. All we know is that its on an Island off the coast of Alaska.”

Alaska? You feel like you’re having a moment of dejavu. You get up and walk over to the screen. James watches you intently as you search the photos. There’s a photo with a few guards scattered about the base. One is turned to the side and you see an emblem on his sleeve. 

“FRIDAY, can you zoom in on his arm?” You ask, pointing to the man. 

She does and you study the emblem. You shake your head slightly and look around the room without really looking at anyone. Then, it hits you like a ton of bricks. 

“FOXHOUND,” you breathe in disbelief. You look at Tony, who is looking intently at you, as is the rest of the room. “Try REX.”

Tony does and raises his eyebrows. “That was it. I’m in.”

The monitor is now showing everything that was on the drive. You see the file marked REX and the same emblem. 

You look at Fury, fire burning in your eyes. James is taken aback by the sudden change. You went from flirtatious to murderous in the blink of an eye. 

“HYDRA is working with FOXHOUND. They intend to use Metal Gear REX for a worldwide nuclear strike.”

In the summer of 2013 I was in Cairo, Egypt. I was on assignment for Al-Jazeera and I was covering a major political upheaval. The president at the time, a guy named Mohammad Morsi who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood party, had been deposed and jailed in what his supporters said was an illeigmiate military coup. So in protest they set up these sit-ins, two of them in the city. And it was this hot, crazy summer, really tense, and by the middle of August the government finally did what it had threatened to do, which was clear the sit-ins. But they did so with unabated violence. They started shooting at people in the sit-ins and in the surrounding neighborhoods around 7 in the morning and didn’t stop until well into the night, until pretty much everybody was either dead or arrested. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a massacre in broad daylight in a capital city of roughly 20 million. 

So the next day, along with a producer who worked in the local bureau and could translate Arabic for me, I went to a mosque where maybe 200 of these bodies were kept. A lot of them were also burned really badly and there were blocks of ice on top of them. And there were these family members going in and out of this mosque to identify their loved ones. It was intensely chaotic and emotional. So my colleague and I walk outside and we start talking to this woman. And she says her husband is among the dead and she’s shaking and in shock. She’s describing her last phone conversation with her husband when the shooting started. And she describes him as an engineer who was unarmed, and he was the father of her 4 children. And my colleague is translating and I’m not even looking, I’m in my notebook, furiously not wanting to miss a detail. And then he stops translating while she’s still talking and I look up at him finally, which is what he was waiting for, and the look on my face is like “Dude, what?” And he leans in and whispers, “Now would be a good time for you to put an arm around her. And this makes my little reporters brain totally short circuit. I am not a touchy-feely person. I don’t hug you for you to tell me your story. But the look on his face was just clear: get over yourself, be human now, and put your arm around her. 

So I really robotically lift my arm to put around her shoulder, and the second my hand touches her she collapses into my chest. And she’s a very very tiny woman, very petite. But she just sinks into me and starts sobbing as she’s holding onto me, and I’ve got my pen and paper and it  hits me really hard that this woman doesnt care what kind of reporter I am, or what my stupid little rules are. She wants me to register what is happening to her on the worst day of her life. She wants me to bear witness to what’s happening to her. And I should have known better, and in fact I did know better.

A few years prior to that in the spring of 2011 was the start of the uprising in Syria, what is now the civil war. And I was sitting in the newsroom, in Al-Jazeera’s headquarters in Qatar, watching this grainy YouTube footage of civilians being mowed down by the Syrian military. And at the same time we had a government spokesperson on our airwaves claiming that this wasn’t really happening, that it was a distortion of the truth, there was a conspiracy. And we couldn’t confirm any of this because they’d already closed down our bureau in Damascus and they weren’t issuing journalists visas, so what to do? Well. I’m a multinational, I have an Iranian passport. So my boss agreed to deploy me to Syria, where I wouldn’t need a visa to enter, just to see what’s going on.

So I fly into Damascus and unfortunately for me at this point the Syrian authorities have already become super paranoid. So they go through my luggage and they find a satellite phone, which is not a big deal. If you travel in that part of the world you know that outside of major cities you don’t have cell phone coverage. You can buy a satellite phone at any shopping mall, it’s not spy gear. But this was enough for them to get really suspicious, so they strip searched me and found my American passport in the pocket of my jeans. And in this passport was a stamp from Al-Jazeera, my sponsored visa, for Qatar, it’s what I needed to reenter the country. And this escalated things. So they took me into an office. They sat me between these two guys on this couch. There’s all these other guys in the office chain smoking, banging out some kind of report on their computer about me. And when that report was done the two guys sitting on either side of me got up, and they strapped on a bunch of guns, and they peeled me from the couch, and they led me to the parking garage under the airport. And they sat me between them in the back seat, with another armed man in the front seat, and drove off into the night. 

We pulled into a compound, there were 3-4 checkpoints to get into this compound, so I assumed it was some sort of government building, where they pulled me out of the car by my hair and threw me in front of a desk in this dimly lit office. And there were all these men yelling at me and I looked down and saw that I was standing in a considerable amount of somebody else's blood. So they processed me for some kind of arrest, blind folded me, handcuffed me, and ended up taking me to an interrogation with a man who told me to call him Ferras. And nothing I said was accepted by Ferras. That I was a reporter, that I wasn’t part of some kind of conspiracy… he didn’t even believe that I didn’t speak Arabic. So I realized very quickly that truth had no currency there. They threw me into a cell that was absolutely covered in blood. Like, so much that I didn’t know where to stand or lean. So I squatted in this corner and tried to sort of wrap my head around the hell that I was in. 

Maybe an hour or two later a guy comes to the door. He blindfolds me and handcuffs me and I thought I was being taken to another interrogation, but he took me outside into a courtyard and slammed me up against the wall. And I could hear people being tortured a few feet away from me. And I could hear the guards joking, and laughing, and I could smell their cigarettes, they were just acting like regular employees on a coffee break. And I sat against that wall and I thought to myself, they’re going to kill me. And worse than that though, believe it or not, worse than dying, was the thought of dying like that. Which is to say, alone. Because I was alone. I couldn’t locate the humanity in the people around me. And I knew that I was going to be an anonymous body. If I was lucky they would throw me in a ditch, maybe. And my father would never have any peace, he’d never know what happened to me. And I’ve never been so alone in my life. 

After about 20 minutes shivering against this wall, and waiting to be shot in the head, I get pulled off and taken back inside. And I keep thinking, well they didn’t kill me, they didn’t kill me now, but they’re going to kill me, because why, why, why would they not allow a reporter to cover a street protest but see in here all of this, and live? Of course I’m going to write about it, why would they do this? I’m gonna die. They’re going to kill me. I’m gonna die. And this was on a pretty tight loop in my head as they threw me back in a cell. And I can hear people being tortured inside this compound, outside this compound, the voices kind of echo and come and go and blend in and then there’s this one voice that stands out. And I can’t exactly figure out why except that he sounded extremely young, he sounded like a teenager, a boy. And I could tell that there was more than one person hurting him, and he was just howling. He was swearing he didn’t know things, swearing to God he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was calling out to God, calling out to his mother, and I couldn’t take it anymore. It was brutal. And so I put my hands up to my ears to just try to block it out. And the second I did that I felt such shame. Because I realized that this kid was in his own, far worse version of the wall -- that's where he was. He was alone. He was dying alone. That’s what was happening. And so I pulled my hands down, just to do what I could, which was to hear him. I couldn’t call out to him to say, “I hear you're not alone,” couldn't identify him, I didn’t know his name, couldn’t contact his family, couldn’t do anything. All I had was the ability to bear witness in that fashion. The kid was choking on his own blood, in his own country, and nobody was going to know. I felt that it was the least I could do. So I listened to him for a while, and every scream was excruciating. It was like a hole being cut inside me with every one of them. And then rather abruptly, his voice just stopped. 

So a couple of days later the Syrians decided that maybe it wasn’t a good idea for them to permanently disappear an Iranian citizen because they have a good relationship with the Iranian government. So they sent me to Iran via extraordinary rendition for additional questioning for another couple of weeks at another prison there. And much to my surprise the Iranain authorities freed me and sent me back to my family. Which was great, I needed the time off for a little bit, but I didn’t want to not be working. I didn’t need to go to a spa and to breathe alpine air. What I needed was to get back to work. Because not being busy and not working meant the wall was always there. I could feel it. And I wanted to push back against that feeling. I couldn’t wait to get back to work, so I did. The second I could I flung myself back into my job. Every assignment if they didn't give me the assignment I would fight for it. Egypt, Libya, nuclear meltdown in Japan, didn’t matter, I was doing it. And I succeeded. A little too well, in pushing back against that wall and that feeling. And what I did in doing so was I also built a distance between myself and the things that I was reporting on, the people I was reporting on. 

But when that woman in Egypt fell into my chest and started crying in the second that it took her to fall into me and cry she destroyed that distance. Entirely eradicated it. And I was back at the wall, and the boy’s voices in my head. And as painful as it is, I realized that it was necessary to bear witness, fully, to what’s happening to someone beyond the couple of paragraphs they might actually get in the story. And as much as some stories will leave a mark, sometimes that’s just what it takes.

Day 17

Day 17 Andrea, Sim & Diane

Alarm went off at 5.15, lucky we had woken up hours before this, the excitement of seeing our families again was starting to take over, soon to be reunited with our children, we have missed them so very very much.

Onisimus our driver for this morning met us to take us to the airport, making our way, took 20 minutes to get to the Jomo International, went thru security with the car, found a coffee house…coffee! Yes, our friend in difficult times is always there. Thru security checkpoint, made our way thru the passport check, finger scanning, thru another security check, thru to the lounge to board the flight to Doha, is a lovely flight, food, drink, watched Jumunji, now watching Coco the movie….

Having arrived in Doha in the early morning, we now have a 4 hour wait in the airport, this time was spent buying Burger King chips & a coke to feed 14 people for $7 aust, walked around the airport, checking out the duty free shops, and all they have to offer, finally checked out Harrods, Andrea bought tea bag container, pens for the kids and a fridge magnet, I got to see the teddy bear under the lamp, this was all checked off the bucket list of things to do, rode the monorail between 2 stops, walked a little bit more, finally said our goodbyes to Diane and checked into our lounge from where we were to fly out from, an hour or so wait again in the departure lounge, then onto the plane, this has been an awesome experience, even if it was just in the airport.

Homeward bound now on the Qatar, filled in the arrival card, had some dinner, think it is now time to have a snooze for an hour or so.

Finally landed in Adelaide, this has been 12 hours, seemed like it was only a couple of hours, as have been fed & watered, slept a little bit on & off, tad difficult to sleep sitting up, but managed a couple of hours inbetween the normal things to do on a plane with a long haul

Quarantine done, declared wood carvings & now back thru the doors, thinking it was only going to be Jake coming to the airport to collect us, turned out to be all the kids, was a wonderful surprise, home again as a family unit, a lot of mileage covered, very bumpy muddy, dirty roads, the villages we visited, the schools visited, the ecclesias visited, the animals, bugs & all creatures great & small, travelled by car, bus, motorbike & planes to get to our destinations

This has been a wonderful, wonderful trip to have been involved in, the AinA team running the activities that we were involved in, have done such a marvellous job in the work created thus far, for a government where the funds stop with the people that ‘run’ the country, helping out these people that do not have anything at all but what is handed to them little by little, what an absolute pleasure to have seen this ourselves & the work continues!

Till the next trip decided, this has been a blog in a nutshell seen thru the eyes of 2 of the most inexperienced travellers ever to have travelled, as we have done no travel outside of Australia…but the bug has bitten!

In the United Arab Emirates, U.S. finds an ally, and a headache

DUBAI--As a vicious civil war erupted in Yemen two years ago and triggered international alarm, the United States warned the combatants to step back. But its efforts were quietly undermined by one of the most trusted U.S. regional allies: the United Arab Emirates.

Hundreds of people had died in battles and airstrikes. But the UAE, part of a Saudi Arabia-led military coalition that is supported by the United States, encouraged its partners to resist then-Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s appeals for peace talks or a cease-fire.

“Yemenis should be firm, as the secretary is a persuasive speaker,” Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a senior Emirati leader, told Yemen’s prime minister as Kerry headed to the region in May 2015. The Gulf Arab states also should “stand firm,” the prince said, according to a meeting summary that was part of leaked Emirati diplomatic emails shared with The Washington Post.

The meeting hinted at the UAE’s drive for influence across the Middle East, using military power, diplomacy and covert means to bolster allies and counter rivals. Its role in Yemen and other recent actions has caused friction with the United States, complicating their decades-long military relationship.

Already, the UAE’s rise as a top-tier U.S. military ally had set it apart from other Arab nations, enhancing its outsize ambitions and regional clout. Now, the two nations appear poised to expand their partnership even further under President Trump, as his administration’s “America First” doctrine translates into a more aggressive stance against Iran and an expanded campaign against al-Qaeda militants on the Arabian Peninsula.

Admiring U.S. generals, including Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, refer to the UAE as “Little Sparta” and call it a model for how regional allies could reduce the counterterrorism burden on the United States.

But tensions in the alliance were brought to the fore last month when American intelligence officials said that the UAE had orchestrated the hacking of a Qatari government website--a move that inflamed a longtime rift between America’s Persian Gulf allies and thrust the White House into the uncomfortable role of mediator.

UAE and American interests have also diverged in Libya, where U.S. officials complained that the UAE was thwarting peace efforts. Yemen’s brutal conflict has exposed the United States to accusations of complicity in war crimes because of its support for the UAE and its gulf allies.

“The danger of creating an independent military capability is that you create an independent military capability,” a former senior U.S. official said. “It’s great that we have a partner in the Emiratis, but we don’t always see eye to eye.”

In 1981, just a decade after the UAE became independent, Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who later would become the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, flew to Washington with grand ambitions of buying U.S. fighter jets that would bolster the military capabilities of the oil-rich monarchy and transform his country into a global power. Instead, he “felt that he was laughed out of town,” a former U.S. diplomat said. “No one knew about the UAE. Who was this kid?”

In the years that followed, the UAE began sending troops to Western-backed conflicts, including the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Somalia, the Balkans and Afghanistan. The Emirati government is building out a series of bases in Africa that will give it even greater military reach.

The Emiratis have also embarked on an extended spending spree. In addition to obtaining F-16s, they were the first U.S. ally to acquire a THAAD, a sophisticated missile defense system. They are now hoping to buy F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, the Pentagon’s most advanced fighter aircraft, which cost $100 million apiece.

Andrew Exum, who served as the senior Pentagon official for Middle Eastern issues until this year, said sophisticated weaponry is not the UAE’s biggest military asset. “What distinguishes them is the diligence with which they have gone about investing in all of the unsexy things” needed to build a capable military, he said, including logistics and training.

Emirati officials say it was the perceived threat from Iran that jump-started their drive to build a modern military and test their forces beyond their borders. They also have seen the need to counter the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and any political or armed groups they see as an extension of that movement.

“It really has to do with geography and the threats we grew up with from day one,” said Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador to the United States and a central figure in the country’s successful U.S. lobbying efforts. Otaiba, a tireless promoter of the view that the UAE is a stabilizing force in the Middle East, has made inroads with key Trump administration officials, including Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and adviser.

But the Emirati view of stability, its critics say, has included a troubling embrace of autocratic leaders who share its antipathy to Iran or Islamists and its intolerance of any political dissent.

That stance has created headaches for the United States, including in Libya. While Emirati pilots played a central role in the 2011 intervention that toppled Moammar Gaddafi, U.S. officials grew frustrated in the years that followed as the UAE, along with Egypt, quietly provided military and financial support to Gen. Khalifa Hifter, a powerful figure who led a violent campaign against Islamist forces, including militants. That support violated a United Nations arms embargo.

U.S. officials also saw Hifter as an obstacle to a political solution. The last straw was a major shipment from the UAE of armored and other vehicles to Hifter that drew a stern response from the administration of Barack Obama.

Within days of his May 2015 visit, Kerry was able to secure a pause in the fighting in Yemen. But like other cease-fires since, it crumbled after a few days.

More than two years later, thousands have been killed by coalition airstrikes, artillery shelling and gunfights. Millions of Yemenis are threatened by starvation and disease, including a cholera epidemic.

Talk of a political solution has grown faint.

The UAE joined the Saudi-led coalition after a Shiite rebel group known as the Houthis ousted Yemen’s government. The UAE, like its Saudi partners, viewed the Houthis as an Iranian proxy force--a characterization that American officials at the outset of the war said was exaggerated.

Some in the Obama administration also warned their gulf allies that the intervention was ill-conceived, according to Robert Malley, the former White House coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa and the gulf. Eager to smooth things over with gulf nations angered by Obama’s nuclear negotiations with Iran, administration officials decided to give the Saudi-led effort military support, but hoped to minimize U.S. involvement and accelerate a political settlement, he said.

“We feared that this was not a war that was destined to end quickly,” Malley said. “The region has had ample experience with nonstate actors like the Houthis--clearly inferior militarily, yet prepared to fight on and unwilling to give in.” The Saudi-led coalition risked getting “dragged in more and more, at great humanitarian cost,” he said.

Privately, Emirati officials seemed worried, too. With Western media coverage “primarily” focused on Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, the UAE was “losing the moral high ground fast,” Otaiba wrote to a colleague in July 2015, according to hacked emails distributed by a group apparently sympathetic to Qatar, the UAE’s rival.

The Trump administration, appearing to prioritize pushing back against Iran over reservations about the conflict, is now weighing deeper U.S. involvement.

The Yemen operation has illustrated the risks to the United States in backing, even indirectly, operations by foreign forces.

Reports by the Associated Press and Human Rights Watch in June alleged that the UAE or forces loyal to it maintained a network of secret prisons in southern Yemen. Witnesses told the AP that in at least one of the facilities, where detainees were being tortured, U.S. forces were present.

Emirati officials denied they maintained secret detention centers or tortured prisoners. U.S. officials told the AP that military leaders looked into the allegations and were satisfied that U.S. forces were not present when any abuses occurred.

Ryan Goodman, a former Pentagon official who teaches law at New York University, co-authored a recent report that concluded that the United States, because of its support for UAE operations in Yemen, may hold legal responsibility for illegal detention practices.

“Is this really a productive way of achieving the long-term goal of combating AQAP or ensuring stability in Yemen?” Goodman wrote.
