7 Social Media Trends to Look for in 2021
Undeniably, Social Media is one of the hottest pieces of platform around the world not just for communication but also for entertainment, engagement and whatnot. The ongoing pandemic has drawn even more attention towards the platforms, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, and more, for the marketing benefits it has to offer to brands globally.
According to Statista, Indians spent an average of 3 hours and 37 minutes on social media last year. Even though the world is opening up slowly and steadily, the habit to use social media for such elongated hours has not seen much of a change, it has become a part of nature, giving an obvious advantage to brands using social media platforms to be the primary source of marketing.
While we are at it, there are 9 social media trends that we picked up which will form an integral base for brand managers, social media managers and strategists as they continue to use social media channels to market their product/service to potential customers. So, let’s dive straight in:
Purposeful and Meaningful Campaigns will find their space amidst the chaos:
The pandemic has enabled people to see beyond their little world. It has driven engagement towards causes and meaningful events. People want to help more than ever before and they expect the brands they like/follow to participate. In fact, 77% of people agreed that they feel more positively about brands making an effort to support society at the moment as per a Twitter survey.
So, in 2021, we, the best digital agency in Gurgaon, believe that brands can take up purpose-driven campaigns to drive engagement and improve brand image and sales via social media.
Shop online will find its new address @Social Media Platforms:
Instagram has served as a catalogue for several homegrown business owners and has also driven sales for them. While social media is yet to evolve to allow customers to directly buy from the platform, it has significantly changed the course as we can see. Shopping from where you get entertained has definitely shortened the customer journey. In fact, 54% of social media users research products using social media, allowing the business owners the opportunity to leverage the potential reach and engagement to target customers.
Moreover, social media platforms are looking to embed a buy button to help brands along the sale journey.
Live Streams will engage, entertain and have an impact:
People need people, people need interactions, people need to share common interests, and having said that the Coronavirus pandemic led the personal face-to-face meetings to turn into WhatsApp video calls or Zoom meetings and live concerts or Fashion weeks became live streams from their houses or studios.
While the situation will obviously get better, offerings will evolve with safety measures and whatnot, however, this trend will continue to benefit the brands moving in 2021 with the aim to engage their audience more closely and make them part of the conversation via social media.
Stories, Reels, IGTV or YouTube, Videos will continue to stay indispensable:
Video, regardless of it being a short format or long format content, will perpetuate to be the 2md most engaging content type on social media, as per Not Another State of Marketing Report.
Consumers choose watching over reading, and major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more are increasingly improving their video capabilities to engage their users in a better experience, giving brands the advantage they need.
Conversational marketing will draw eyeballs:
While in 2020, brands used conversational marketing tactics to promote their products and improve sales, 2021 will see a significant shift towards brands trying to educate their audience about their offering or nurture their mind with mindful dialogue.
In fact, the whole tone of digital conversations will change as brands will become more human on social media to be able to build trust and repo with a customer.
‘Less is more’ approach will nurture brands’ social media growth:
The 2021 year is going to be a benchmark for years to come for the type of content brands will produce. Instead of curating bulk content, brands will have to focus on thoughtful, empathetic and valuable content, even if the number of posts goes from 30 to 15 per month.
‘Less is more’ is essential today because the ongoing times have led people to question what they are engaging with, question what interests them, leading to a shift in content consumption preference.
Despite the algorithms, the right thing to do is to not bombard the customers with meaningless postings, and wait for the content to pick up and form the base for brand image.
Brands will embrace Gamification, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to amp up the Social Media Experience:
With Facebook’s Oculus, Snapchat launching mini-games in the app, Instagram’s filters, Explurger’s AI-based gamification and more, gamification in social media will continue to play a key role in enriching users’ social media experience and improving brand’s social media engagement and reach.
Brands must keep an eye out for game-related promotions in 2021 as the social media platforms also gear up to offer advanced and more transformed opportunities for in-game advertising in the future.
The Bottom Line
Brands that need to stand out from the crowd must focus on understanding what their audiences want and leverage the changing social media trends in 2021. Every piece of content that goes on your social media platform is a reflection of who you are as a brand and what philosophy you believe in. Hence, trying to stick with the changing times will help you grow.

India's changed media consumption habits may remain post lockdown
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/indias-changed-media-consumption-habits-may-remain-post-lockdown/
India's changed media consumption habits may remain post lockdown
Initially, it took a nudge. Ramayan was airing on Doordarshan (DD). In Mumbai, the seniors in the Singh family had a plan. “We had grown up with Ramayan. We had emotions and nostalgia attached to it. We wanted our kids to know the story, too,” says Ajit Kumar Singh, a banking sector executive. The family of five comprises Singh, his wife, son, 17, daughter, 26, and his 77-year-old mother-in-law.
“In the beginning, we had to push our daughter a bit to watch the serial,” he says. Many episodes and weeks later, things have fallen into place. During the lockdown, breakfast is about the family watching Ramayan together. “Initially, I was just curious. What was this serial that held people so much in thrall in the 1980s? Slowly, it has grown on me,” says the daughter, Parul Singh.
But it’s the granny, Mandvi Singh, who is the happiest. Life in the big city is a constant chase. “Everybody was busy. We rarely sat down together,” she says. Even when people had the time, they would watch their favourite programmes — news, cooking shows or one of the many soaps — in their own spaces. “Watching Ramayan together in these difficult times is a refreshing change,” says Ajit.
The Singh family has a lot of company in these locked-down days in India. On the back of reruns of old serials like Ramayan, Mahabharat and Buniyaad, for the first time since 2015 (when BARC was launched), the state-run DD has become the topviewed channel in the country (see box).
TV
TV
Note: % change refers to change in numbers between Jan 11-31 (weekly average) and Apr 4-10 Source: All data, unless otherwise specified, are from BARC and Nielsen, which are tracking weekly shifts in consumer behaviour before and during lockdown.
And its audience engagement has only grown week after week. Who would have thought that amid the plethora of slickly produced sitcoms, movies and originals, mythological shows produced in the 1980s would keep a nation spellbound in these difficult times? “Retreating into the world of Ramayan and Mahabharat is not just about viewing and entertainment. It is a combination of therapy, nostalgia and remembering god amid an unprecedented crisis,” says Santosh Desai, CEO, Future Brands.
A national lockdown that has gone on for five weeks has seen Indians embracing a quieter life. The cacophonous physical world outside has fallen silent, only to be replaced by a vibrant virtual life — experiences streaming via cable, broadband and 4G. News, fantasy, crime, comedy, mythology and pornography all jostle for attention, offering homebound Indians, the more fortunate of them anyway, endless possibilities to stay informed and escape the harsh realities and uncertainties of one of the most tumultuous times in memory.
We have been equipping ourselves with necessary gear for a while. This is a country where buying TVs for homes has historically taken precedence over building toilets. Our affinity for media has only been amplified by a surging smartphone usage (50 crore-plus handsets) and internet connections (72 crore plus), thanks to low-cost Chinese phones and the world’s cheapest data plans.
Viewership
DD
A life where the virtual takes precedence is a delight for marketers and sociologists. Flows of terabytes of data, relatively easy to measure, can offer an unparalleled peek into human behaviour, the shifting patterns and emerging trends.
Not surprisingly, multiple outfits — from research consultancies such as Nielsen, BARC and Similar-Web to search giants such as Google to platforms such as Razorpay in fintech and dating app Truly-Madly — are watching closely. Nielsen (for smartphone data) and BARC (for TV data) have been releasing in-depth weekly reports since the lockdown began, slicing the data to understand the shifts. ET Magazine mined a slew of data sets to bring you insights on India’s digital life in the time of lockdown.
PM’s Speech
Going Retro Time spent on both TVs and smartphones has gone up, with TV getting the largest share. In both variety and time, viewers are seeking more. Average weekly viewing minutes on TV rose by 38%, even as average number of channels being watched rose from 16 to 22. Some are obvious, like the sharp growth (76%) in non prime time as against prime time (which saw only a 5% uptick) viewing, even as weekly advertising time dipped by 26% to 20 million seconds. With people staying at home, TV viewing time is now spread out through the day. “Content satiates emotional and mental needs as anxiety and panic have risen. We have seen a huge growth of DD and non-prime time viewing,” says Sunil Lulla, CEO, BARC India. Unlike popular perception, DD’s growth has come from across income classes, with upper income households leading the surge.
LOCKDOWN SWITCH
Intergenerational Co-viewing Sees a Boost Mandvi Singh, 77 Retired PSU executive, Mumbai LOCKDOWN SWITCH: For the first time, three generations have their breakfast together, watching Ramayan on TV “Earlier, we rarely sat together for anything. It is good to see even today’s kids liking Ramayan”
“Appeal of DD’s shows cuts across segments with very sticky viewers,” he says. Not only has Ramayan’s viewership grown week after week, it is also marked by co-viewing (22% of children are watching with their grandparents) where families get together to watch. Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi Vempati says, “The viewership growth for DD is across segments. What we are witnessing here is the calculus of segmentation being turned on its head, with wholesome family viewing returning. Many decades back, TV was the glue that brought families together.
That is happening again with the epics.” For DD, the lockdown strategy was simple. “We wanted to engage families so that they could stay home to stay safe,” he says. Encouraged, it has launched DD Retro on a pilot basis as a channel to recreate the nostalgia. Meanwhile, consumption of news has grown sharply (219%), followed by movies (73%). “We have seen a viewership surge. Morning viewing time is getting extended into the afternoon. It is also about fresh content. Unlike general entertainment channels (GEC) and sports, news is the only category that can generate fresh content under lockdown,” says MK Anand, MD, Times Network. (It is owned by Times Group, which publishes this newspaper.) GEC saw only a marginal growth of 7%.
There are two possible reasons for this. One is obvious — little availability of fresh content in a lockdown. The second reason is interesting and could offer some clues into how the battle for remote control is shaping up within homes, says Desai. Women, who are a dominant chunk of GEC viewers, may have had to re-prioritise their access to TV amid household chores and stiff competition from kids and men. Interestingly, sports channels that saw a sharp dip, with the cancellation of live sporting events, have witnessed a spike with the live-streaming of WrestleMania and reruns of Indo-Pak cricket classics.
classroom
Online Sessions Keep Classrooms Going Ashwini Kumar, 16 Student, Sitamarhi, Bihar LOCKDOWN SWITCH: He’s in Class 10; his tuition teacher now conducts virtual sessions & tests “My studies had stopped totally. My tuition teacher now sends notes & tests via WhatsApp. It helps”
Smartphone View Multiple sources offer insights into smartphone usage in India. “The biggest thing that struck me is how both men and women have taken to digital news at every level of socio-economic strata in metros and non-metros,” says Dolly Jha, country head, Nielsen India. It has been tough for family oriented Indians to practise social distancing. Forced to cut off physical connections, they are making up in the virtual world. “The share of time Indians spent on calling and chatting is 29% as against 12% in the US,” says Jha.
Covid-19 is on everyone’s mind. More than 1 in every 10 respondents used the government’s Aarogya Setu app in the first week of its launch. Also, 40% of Google’s top 100 searches are related to Covid-19, says Nielsen. Time spent on chat and VoIP (19% on average, with women hitting higher at 22%) leads smartphone usage, followed by social networking (15%), video-streaming (14%) and gaming (9% on average, while 15-21-year-olds spend 11% of their time). Santanu Basu, founder, Let’s Game Now, an esports platform, has seen the user base of gamers surge from 17,000 pre-lockdown to 50,000 now. Based on data from SimilarWeb, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and You-Tube are the most popular apps in India. During the lockdown, downloads of almost all these apps have remained stable or dipped, except for TikTok, which saw a big rise. “The sweaty energy that TikTok exudes is a good representative of what is happening in the society at large,” says Desai. He says the depth and breadth of content in TikTok around Covid-19 is far richer than that in other platforms.
World of Smartphones
YouTube search trends echo some of these shifts. News, gaming, at-home workouts and recipe searches for dishes like panipuri saw a big spurt, says Kaushik Das Gupta, group head, insights and partnerships, Google India. OTT player MX Player (owned by Times Group, which publishes this newspaper), which launched seven shows in March, has seen time spent on its platform jump 2.5 times as compared with pre-lockdown days. “Our offering of Hollywood films like Baywatch and Transformers, dubbed in Hindi, is doing well,” says Karan Bedi, CEO, MX Player. Snehil Khanor, cofounder of dating platform TrulyMadly, has seen the number of active users, their engagement and time spent rise even as peak activity time has got extended.
Apps
Love
Beyond the Lockdown Whenever the world resets to normalcy, many of these shifts might prove to have been transient. But some could stick or accelerate trends that were already afoot. OTT viewing is one of them. Virtually, all major streaming platforms have witnessed a jump in user base. Some of those users may not log out after the lockdown.
Similarly, digital transactions have witnessed interesting shifts. A recent report by Razorpay, a fintech company, based on pre-lockdown and lockdown transactions, shows that payments for utilities, IT & software, and media & entertainment saw a growth of 73%, 32% and 25%, respectively, even as sectors such as travel dipped by 87%. “Demonetisation was a short-term event. Lockdown will lead to long-term shifts. Behavioural change will be a lot stickier,” says Razorpay cofounder Harshil Mathur.
Indians are also waking up to the convenience of virtual workout coaches. Universal Music MD Devraj Sanyal has used the lockdown period to focus on his physical and mental well-being, spending two hours daily shuffling between fitness regimens. “Those two hours, I think of nothing else. It’s a great way to de-stress in these difficult times. I am 100% sure some of it will stay post-lockdown,” he says.

Voice integration in search engines and use of digital assistants are making searches effective. This is because intent is better assessed and can be decided whether it is for purchase or research. In voice search, the format of words entering a search engine will change. In the written query, “best organic food stores in Los Angeles” can become “Hi Siri, where is the best organic food store in Los Angeles” in avoice search. It is said that 38 percent of the 3.5 billion searches on Google every day are voice searches and personal assistant devices are having the headway. Invoice search, Siri answers a question with a few results unlike the typed queries yielding 100 answers. Sometimes there will be just one result. The benefit is that any website finding a place in the limited results will receive a hugely exponential CTR. For that goal, SEO strategy will have to be fine-tuned to be blessed by voice search results. Search phrases have to be become conversational, unlike the static written expressions which are mostly keyword clusters. Automotive digital marketing Among the industries where new digital marketing trends are giving optimum results will be auto sector in the area of car sales. Automotive digital marketing trends are keenly watched. One of the major automotive industry trends 2018 is getting cheered from the evidence that 71% of digital interactions happen on mobile prior to a car-buying process. Impact of automotive digital marketing trends are apparent in searches, visits, video views and mobile clicks that mark 86% of Gen X ‘s car purchase using many devices including smartphones, desktops, and laptops. Videos influence the bulk of car buyers in escalating micro-moments as macro videos are now broad basing each step of buyer’s journey with clear answers to all queries. Tablets, video walls, tabletop touchscreen surfaces also offer digital showrooms in boosting virtual shopping experiences. An example of social media marketing automotive industry is the initiative of Audi’s 3-D technology offering virtual vehicle tours in London. Here potential buyers get a 360-degree tour with sound effects. Responsive Websites Given the primacy of web and video as princes in content marketing, responsive websites will be in demand which is easily visible on the mobile phones. Influencer Marketing Social media influencers are going to play an important role in expanding sales. In the auto sector, their word sells and carries clout with followers. The best part is influencer marketing is far more credible and less “salesy.” User-Generated Content User-generated content will be dominant as a critical digital marketing trend backing social media marketing efforts. Selfies with happy customers’ cars will trigger a viable service review by the new car owner. User-generated content can easily connect potential buyers with happy customers and the chain lingers. ........................................ About 30% of Indians are residing in a rented apartment across India according to latest RICS – Knight Frank report. Are you also one of them?
COVID-19 has horrifying effects on the world, but it has shown us a harsh reality of society. With no jobs, no income, and high rents, the survival of middle-class families in India is becoming difficult day by day. This situation has surely highlighted to us the importance of having our own property.
We understand that you must be having a long-term plan of saving and buying a property in the major city, you are living in. But the trends of purchasing high-end property in posh areas ischanging rather people are investing in number of properties. The urbanite cities are already captured by veteran investors. As a result of which people are shifting to sub-metrosand searching for better options like residential apartments in Zirakpur.
Why Sub-Metros?
The major reason is costing. As the demand for residential apartments increases, the cost rises. 13 Promising Digital Marketing Trends That Could Boost Your Career in 2020
From being a top trend in business to having trends of its own, Digital Marketing has come a long way. It’s not just a secluded department in an organization anymore, it’s an industry in itself; and a speeding one at that.
Trends are hard to predict. But once picked up at an early stage, they can help you stay one step ahead of the competition every time. They can help you be prepared for the unknown. They can help you become a quality Digital Marketer. As we step into the new decade with 2020, the digital realm is evolving to meet the demands of a fast-moving world.
A quality Digital Marketer won’t just preach and show his/her expertise in the field to the clients, but a true Digital Marketer will practice, get great results, and implement the same in the strategies he does for others. So risk-taking is a major part of making a hunch about what new trends can work in the future. The job market is also emphasizing the importance of contemporary skills. So follow your instincts and see what works.
So, here’s a quick glance of the major predictions that we think will rock the year and be a gamechanger for digital marketing careers in many ways. Keeping a close eye on these trends and gaining expertise in them can go a long way in furthering your career.
1. WhatsApp for Business
WhatsApp at the time of its launch stormed the Indian market. It is one of the few apps that got addicted to people of every age group. After almost a decade, it is slowly being known for its business application, and in 2020, this will start getting more prominence.
One of the major Pros of WhatsApp is that it allows you to give a personalized experience to your customers who are interacting with your business. And with its features, it can allow you to respond to your customers 24/7.
After changing your normal WhatsApp account to a business account, one can unlock many other features like:
Setting up a Greeting Message — This will allow your account to send an automatic greeting message to any new user interacting with you, or an old user interacting with you after a long time.
Setting up an away Message — Business owners have a life too, and this is often overlooked by the general public. They expect the business owners to be at their disposal every time they have a use for it. WhatsApp for Business allows you to draft a message that you can set whenever you are away and can’t access your phone. In such a case, whenever someone sends a message, they get an automatic reply.
Chatbot Integration — Integrate the Chatbot with your blog/website and drive the visitors from your website to your WhatsApp. This eases the communication flow.
With many other automatic options, WhatsApp for business basically reduces the communication gap and makes sure the information is transferred effectively. And with personalization being the next big thing, WhatsApp for Business can be a game-changer.
2. Podcast
After texts, images, and videos, Podcast is said to be the next platform to consume content. This is deemed by many content creators as the future platform of story-telling. Oral storytelling is one of the most basic and earliest forms of storytelling. It is easy to use, connect, and create content with.
With many new platforms supporting podcasts coming up, people are slowly moving to those platforms for storytelling. People are starting their podcast channel and also integrating the same in their blogs and websites.
One of the major reasons podcasts are being popular is because of its ability to be more flexibly accessible than other forms of long content. While podcasts can be listened to by just plugging in earphones and going about the day to day activities, it is not possible to the same with blogs or vlogs. This is a major edge this form has over others, and this is why it is said to grow in the coming times.
3. Rise of LinkedIn
LinkedIn is one of the oldest Social Media networks that still exist. It was founded 2 years before Facebook, and is titled by many as, ‘Facebook for the professional world’. While LinkedIn hasn’t been much in the limelight, it is slowly following the footsteps of the 2008’s version of Facebook.
One of the most organically rich versions of Facebook was seen in 2008, where the posts reached a good amount of audience without paying for it. And after almost 2 decades, LinkedIn is working to be the next organically rich Facebook for professionals. Soon, you will see brands take a serious route to focus on their LinkedIn strategies.
LinkedIn is now updating its ads, reach for videos, PDF-based scrolls, and many more features that will make it stand out of the rest. Job search, personnel search, background check, everything will be seen happening on LinkedIn.
4. Voice Search
2020 is the year of voice. Need proof of its proficiency? Go look at how a 5-year-old is using the search engine, and you will have a fair idea as to how serious this trend can be.
Seeing this trend, people have started implementing voice SEO for their brands according to the way people search for a website with voice. And with Artificial Intelligence gaining popularity, voice search can be taken to a whole new level.
People can just go about their business and talk to their phones to make calls, book appointments, set reminders, search for anything they want, and not even use their phone. So let’s wait and watch how much Noise this new trend can make in this field
5. TikTok
There’s already a lot of Chatter going on in the market about the ability of TikTok to influence a large number of population to take up digital platforms. It has proven it time and again, and most of the Digital Giants from Gary Vee to Neil Patel, everyone is talking about its immense potential in the Digital World. Started as Musical.ly, the app has garnered immense popularity among the rural and vernacular language online users.
The platform has not just grown, it has overgrown. It is a hub of entertainment with its many challenges, ads, lip-sync battles and many other things that are giving millions of people a platform to shine. The coming year will see an increase in TikTok used for educational and infotainment purposes.
Some of the best ways that TikTok is being leveraged as a marketing tool is:
In-feed local ads.
Hashtag ads.
Hashtag challenges.
User involvement and participation.
User-Generated Content.
Diverse form of content in terms of vernacular languages.
Having said all this, TikTok is definitely in the arsenal of Digital Marketers in their strategies the upcoming year.
6. Vernacular Growth
The myth has been busted, and the vernacular section in the Digital Marketing world is up and growing. Creating content only in English is no longer the sole criterion of market products and services or to earn money. People have been seen go viral and famous in their vernacular language itself.
With a little push from TikTok, all the other platforms have started taking the vernacular route by promoting more and more local content. Facebook and Google ads can now be used in many local languages to target a specific audience. It helps boost hyper-targeting, and it lowers the overall ads cost per lead (CPL).
7. Instagram Organic
Buying Instagram, in its initial stage, was one of the best purchase decisions made by Facebook. It is now the go-to platform for all brands, businesses, and personal brand developers. With such a huge population on board, and a potential to grow manifolds, Instagram is all set to beat some of the top giants in Social Media. There is no brand that will prepare their Digital Marketing plans without Instagram.
Instagram is seen going aggressive, and people are getting organic traffic very effectively. Having said this, people will automatically invest more time, effort, and money here as it brings it will start bringing a great amount of engagement and reach without spending a penny on it.
Apart from just being able to make a brand name, and increase brand awareness, e-selling has been boosted really well through this platform.
8. Integration of Video and Audio Files in Blogs
Writing blogs is one of the essential tasks for any business. It is to develop the right web presence. It drives traffic and provides high visibility. Blogs have evolved in the way it gets presented on a webpage.
But many popular websites have been seen taking a new route blogging. And the reason? Well, people are not always interested in reading blocks of texts. And hence, they have started integrated videos and podcasts in their blogs.
So in addition to the text, they have the option to listen to the article in the form of a podcast and watch the article in the form of videos. So they have visual, audio, and audio-visual input.
The introduction of Podcasts has taken blogs to a whole new level. It helps in a more straightforward understanding of the content. Video files make the content interested as visuals tend to retain in memory more than written words. Similarly, Podcasts or audio files are convenient tools for readers. They can now listen to the posts via audio even while they are traveling, thus saving their time.
One extra factor that plays a role while integrating videos and podcasts in blogs is that Google’s ranking algorithm now gives priority to articles with media in them. So be ready to read articles, listen to articles, and even watch articles.
9. Augmented Reality
Augmented reality creates computer-generated visuals that show the user a real-world image providing a composite view. Advanced AR is designed such that at times it becomes difficult to differentiate between reality and the virtual model.
AR is used for entertainment, military training, and robotics. It adds visual elements to give an effect to create an illusion. Bloggers use it to make their webpage interactive. It enhances the real-time experience for the visitors on your page.
The popularity of your page depends on the user experience you provide to your people. AR is the new trend, and it is definitely sure to make your visual presence exceptional and unusual.
Other uses of AR is already being seen in Instagram filters. Brands have started making their own AI filters to increase brand personalization, and few creators have also integrated AI for people to share stories with.
Just one month in, and it AR is already a hit on Instagram, let’s see what 2020 has in store for us.
10. Digital Detox
With so much Digital Influence being spread by everyone around, it is about time people stand up for themselves and decide to take q break. Not everyone uses Digital for a purpose, where some are digital workers, some are digital addicts. And this is where Detox comes in.
In a recent survey done by Sorav Jain, one of the leading Digital Marketers in India, it was discovered that more than half of the population is addicted to their mobile phones in one way or the other. It later leads to mental health issues that include anxiety, depression, jealousy, restlessness, and so many other things.
More than 70% of people admitted that the first thing in the morning and the last thing in the night was checking their phone. This has slowly started to become an issue and has triggered many influencers and celebrities to create awareness and help people out of it.
Digital Detox will be the talk of the year with realizing the use of Digital more responsibly and get out of the addiction that is holding them down.
11. Digital Public Relations (PR)
Backlinks and keywords have become a fundamental part of the SEO practice that is implemented by almost everyone trying to rank on Google’s search. So it is hard to stand out just because of these. A new trend that was seen growing slowly growing in 2019 was Digital PR and is bound to grow in 2020.
It is a practice that helps brands create a quality online presence. These agencies or networks work closely with top journalists, influencers, bloggers, institutes, etc. to grow their brand value in relevant places and among relevant people.
It helps the brand get high quality and relevant backlinks and also get genuine and honest reviews for the brand.
12. Rise of Messenger and WhatsApp Sequence
Email marketing has always been the go-to way to hit a large number of subscriber groups or to be used for automation messages in case of inquiries and leads. But with the popularity of emails going down, the substitutes are all set to hit the market and gain popularity.
Messenger and WhatsApp sequences are instant, quick, and effective when it comes to maintaining databases and replying to leads as and when they come.
While in emails, there are high chances for them to be ending up in spam, these messages can go right in the platforms they use the most. They can also help ensure personalization, give better insights, and interact in a more conversational and natural way.
With the help of bots, which can be integrated with blogs and websites, these message sequences can be triggered, and conversations can be started with anyone who interacts with them. And these interactions can help get a database of the customers, which can be valuable for targeting in the future.
13. Google My Business
It is challenging for small and local businesses to bear the top players in their industry. But one thing that they have an edge on is that where a large business has its presence globally, small ones can flourish locally.
But the issue faced is that they may or may not have a working website, their SEO may not be on point, and their presence may not be that prominent on the World Wide Web. And hence, Google My Business is the perfect solution for local popularity.
A brand’s Google My Business page can be made visible when people are searching for them on Google search engine, Google Maps, and any other database. The brand can upload relevant pictures, give the full address, contact information, and deep insights about the brands. This acts as a mini-website for the business and helps drive a lot of local traffic and footfalls for the business.
The Page acts as a great local SEO boost, as it can be made into a keyword-rich snippet about the business. Yet another main feature is that it will allow people to leave feedback about the business post-interaction. This will help people who are searching for the business to read the reviews and then take a calculated decision.

Isolated abroad during coronavirus outbreak, how some Indian students are dealing with the crisis
With universities across the globe shut down because of the coronavirus outbreak, a large number of Indian students continue to live away from family at a time they need an emotional anchor the most.
On 12 April, Indian National Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill questioned the Centre why Indian students stranded abroad are not being evacuated, while the government is in "active mode" to help foreign nationals stuck in India. "The BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) government is in 'active mode' for foreign nationals and is in 'sleep mode' for Indian students stranded abroad in this hour of global crisis," Shergill said in a statement.
Away but not 'stranded'
But a lot of the Indian students still in their dorms, private accommodations or at a relative's place, away from their immediate families, claim they are not feeling 'stranded' or 'stuck.' Some of them claim they are used to living by themselves for they left their parents' shelter years ago.
Certainly, during a global crisis like this, they admit they feel the need to be in constant touch with their parents but technology has bridged the gap. Apps like Facetime and WhatsApp video calling have allowed them and their parents to combat emotional distancing.
If given a choice, would they have taken the plunge and returned to India rather than stay away from family? Many were not in favour of doing so, at least under the circumstances they were in when they had a choice.
"I think it's much safer for everyone, including me, to stay put where they are. Going back would've put the safety of my parents, as well as (that of) potentially society, at risk, and definitely mine too. Moreover, I'm not facing any problems here so I don't see any reason for me to go back. It's just a matter of coping with living alone, and I think that's a small challenge compared to the risk I'll be putting everyone at if I went back," says Mayank Sehgal, currently pursuing MBA from HEC Paris.
Aditya Tank, who studies at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in the United States, reasons that even if he braved the risk of infected airplanes and airports, it was too late for him to escape the state quarantine. "By the time I could travel, it was already 16 March, when India had made 14-day state quarantine compulsory for anyone coming from the US. So even after going through all the hassle, I'd have to spend two weeks away from family. My parents were obviously worried but they got my decision when I explained the above point to them. So as of now, we're looking forward to the time when there are no restrictions, and I can come back without having to stay in the state quarantine."
Another hurdle that is stopping the students abroad to return to their parents' comfort is the time difference between both the countries. Since a majority of the colleges across the globe have converted the classes online (through Zoom or similar conference video calling app), they will have to wake up at odd hours in order to 'attend' the classes. "My classes and assignments are still going on so I didn't want to go back to India only to operate on a 9.5-hour time difference. It didn't make sense," says Varun Natu, currently in Pittsburgh, who believes he would barely get the time to spend quality time with parents in that case.
State intervention
Besides these technical and logical reasons, many also have the administration, either the government or the college, to blame for not acting well within time. "You know how lax the US has been about their response to the pandemic. When my parents had asked me to fly back, at that point, my university had declared the online class setting till only 6 April," says Aditya Tank. Even after the change was made subsequently to extend the online classes till the end of the semester, it was already too late to travel.
Pranati Sharma, pursuing MBA in Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, recalls the college administration initially took drastic steps to curb the spread of coronavirus, which resulted in complete chaos among the students. "We got a mail from college on the night of 15 March, giving us three days to vacate all the student accommodations under Trinity, even the private ones. However, the college sent a clarification mail a day later, allowing students to stay. This created a lot of chaos, and 90 percent of the people, including Indians, booked flights on 15 March itself for the very next day to return to India."
While Pranati chose not to travel even after the college's rather knee-jerk approach, Amishi Agrawal, studying at the University of Tokyo in Japan, has a different story to tell. "We haven't had a lockdown yet. A state of emergency was declared a few days ago but there are no rules in place. Most places are open, and you can go out if you want to. The greater challenge here is to ensure you're safe since the government isn't doing much on that front, and also the linguistic barrier. For now, we're just reading up more, and pushing for stricter rules within our dormitories."
ALSO READ: Under lockdown in Europe, Indian students go online to protest inequalities back home, keep up with academics
She explains how the lack of awareness by the state can make the pandemic even worse, if not for the information coming in from other countries. "I thought at the start that Japan was handling it very well. It turned out that was a lie as Japan was trying to conceal information because they wanted to host the Olympics (which was later pushed tentatively to 2021). Had I known the situation in Japan was so grave, I'd have definitely gone back to India then."
Even Sweden seems to be not taking the crisis as seriously despite rising cases in the country. Sarthak Prakash, currently pursuing a Master's degree in Biomedical Technology from Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, says the lockdown is not as stringent as the one in India despite similar graphs in coronavirus infections in both the countries. "There are no restrictions at all. All the pubs and restaurants are open. The only change I'm facing is online classes and virtual group meetings. People are advised to maintain social distancing. The population of Sweden is about 10 million, and they have 10,000 cases now (by the time his input was taken). It's mostly concentrated in Stockholm so the rest of the economy is open. They (government) fear bad repercussions if the restrictions are imposed for an extended time."
Mayank, however, is grateful to the French government for its transparency in dealing with the crisis. "They're communicating with us very clearly what's happening and what's going to happen (as far as they know). The confinement has been extended till 11 May, after which things will gradually open up again. Even alcohol and cigarettes are available. We're allowed to go for a walk within 1 km radius of our residence."
Daily chores, increasing constraints
Besides the occasional long queues outside grocery stores in Paris and ordering grocery for a week in advance in Pittsburgh, regular supplies has not been the primary issue for most of the students abroad. But Taruna Venkat, currently pursuing a Master's in Science Degree (Tropical Biology and Conservation) from James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, says constant delay in the lifting of lockdown will only worsen the situation for students monetarily. "I'm concerned about stretching out my savings, and avoiding asking family for money given they also require to save up. I'm also concerned about them, since they're aged and live in Mumbai, which is rapidly becoming a hotspot of the coronavirus spread."
Tasheev Bagga, enrolled in a Master's course in Fashion and Entrepreneurship at RMIT University in Melborune, Australia, still gets chills thinking about the day he realised the graveness of the epidemic. "I remember I went to a supermarket to get grocery but there was absolutely nothing there because of panic buying. All the racks you think will never be seen empty were like that. It's the basic requirement, and it wasn't available. That hit me hard when I went back home. Things are much better now."
Apart from the daily chores of cooking, clean, and buying grocery, what is keeping all the students busy are the online classes by the university and work from home for any internship or training they were employed in beside the college. Naman Jain, working as a Master's student at Max Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, explains why despite the lockdown period being "an introvert-heaven," the lack of interpersonal contact is getting to his nerves now. "Research groups are incredibly important for reasons more than just academic discussions. It's getting limited because of the 'indirect-ness' over mails or video calls. The productivity isn't as much if one doesn't discuss or collaborate," he says.
He adds he did not contemplate going back since he had only two months of training left after working there for over nine months. "My parents have spent most of the time mulling I should've come back when I could. But I get their concern. They don't know it's safe around here, groceries and medical help are easily available, people are cooperative, and there aren't as less number of people on the streets as I'd expected."
Life-altering events stand altered
It is certainly not easy to withdraw when one is so close to the finishing line. Both Purushartha Singh (BSc in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University) and Aditya Tank were days away from their respective convocation ceremonies. "My parents were scheduled to come here from India, and then we had a little tour planned. But obviously now, all that has gone for a toss. After online classes, home assignments, and online exams, the university is even planning an online convocation," says Purushartha.
As strange as online convocation sounds, Aditya is hopeful his university will have a flesh-and-blood ceremony whenever the situation is completely normal. "But my visa is expiring soon so I'm planning to go back to India at the end of May, hopefully."

As some are busy getting to the end, others starting their journey have their own issues to deal with. Arunima Gitai, studying Counselling and Psychotherapy at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, details her struggles to find accommodation. "I landed in Perth on 29 February, and the lockdown started here in the first week of March. Everyone was already on the edge about the virus. Most of the people were wary to give rented accommodation to people, especially who had arrived in the country recently. Everyone whom I spoke to would ask me when I landed, ask me to show my travel documents, ask if I got tested, or if I had a connecting flight from China."
She adds a "sweet man" empathised with her situation and asked him to move into a rented accommodation immediately. But she confesses she had a terrible time putting up at a temporary accommodation for a week. "It was very hostile to live among aggressive people who would ask me, sometimes even in every couple of hours, when I'd move out, or who told me I should go back to India. The epidemic was bringing out the worst in people. Humans are mean, aggressive, and self-preserving by nature, and the circumstances just happen to bring that out more openly."
Logistical issues like these only tend to add to the mental and emotional toll a young person goes through, particularly in the absence of a familiar environment. But all students across the globe that this writer talked to were on the same page of not returning to India especially because of the risks in travel involved. They would end up making their 'new home' more inhabitable, and are determined to get through with the crutch of technology, creative pursuits, and by just observing nature heal itself.
Naman's hopeful words give many like him hope that the spring is not far behind. "Nature was incredibly beautiful since I came here. Nothing has changed (on that front). It's just that spring has come around, so it's more pretty out here, but nothing else."

Popular Bulk SMS Marketing Services in India | Bulk SMS Shop

A New Study Tells You How Fake News Is Spread On WhatsApp
Researchers found that the sensationalism of the mainstream media formats and genres work very well when edited and used out of context in WhatsApp-based propaganda or misinformation.
BENGALURU, Karnataka—A new WhatsApp-backed study has found that fake news is mostly spread by users who are prejudiced and ideologically motivated, rather than ignorant or digitally illiterate.
The report, titled WhatsApp vigilantes? WhatsApp messages and mob violence in India is by a group of researchers from the London School of Economics who were among 20 teams selected by the company for a $50,000 grant to study how fake news spreads, and what the company can do to prevent this.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is the most popular social media platform in India, with over 400 million users in the country. The app’s innocuous inbox is prime real estate for misinformation and downright hate, ranging from flagrant violations by political parties to communal propaganda. The rapid spread of information has also led to many Indians being lynched over rumors of being child kidnappers, leading the company to introduce restrictions on forwarding messages. But then, reports revealed that a Rs 1,000 the software could bypass WhatsApp’s restrictions. And if that was too hard to do, many, many companies were also offering WhatsApp mass-messaging as a service, automating propaganda and undercutting regulation.
The researchers—Dr. Shakuntala Banaji and Ramnath Bhat at LSE, and Anushi Agrawal and Nihal Passanha at Maria, a media, and arts collective in Bengaluru—looked specifically at the issue of WhatsApp lynchings, with “a focus on the intersection of disinformation, misinformation, fake news, propaganda, mob violence, socio-political contexts of technology use, technological affordances and infrastructures, user experiences and motivations, media literacy, policy and regulation”.
“Since 2015, there have been more than a hundred instances of lynching,” said the report. “Many of these incidents victimize individuals from discriminated groups (Dalits, Muslims, Christians, Adivasis) based on allegations of cow slaughter, cow trafficking and cattle theft. Although the victims are targeted for different reasons, these incidents have in common mobs of vigilantes who use peer-to-peer messaging applications such as WhatsApp to spread lies about the victims.”
The researchers interviewed experts and focus groups, talking to users across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh this year. They also gathered WhatsApp messages from multiple sources, and analyzed WhatsApp forwards, including texts, still photos and moving images.
“During focus groups and interviews with working and middle class users, men, women and young people, urban and rural as well as literate and illiterate users with a spectrum of political opinions, and during expert interviews, we examined the daily practices of WhatsApp usage in the contemporary Indian socio-political context,” said the report.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, they found that WhatsApp messages don’t exist in a vacuum. Although new technology platforms can accelerate the spread of certain messages, hate speech is not intrinsic to new platforms. So, for example, the researchers found that particular stereotypes or narratives would appear on WhatsApp at the same time that they began circulating on social media, mainstream news media or even films.
“The fact that mainstream media has been responsible for broadcasting the hate-speech and stereotypes in the speeches of politicians without much criticism or questioning means that messages on WhatsApp which disparage particular communities or call for action against them (for example: Dalits, Muslims, Adivasis, Kashmiris, Christians) are less likely to be perceived as misinformation,” the researchers noted. “Likewise, the the sensationalism of mainstream media formats and genres works very well when edited and used out of context in WhatsApp-based propaganda or misinformation.”
Who’s reading them?
One difference, though, is in who is receiving these messages on WhatsApp, versus traditional media. The use of smartphones in India is highly gendered—according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) there are 451 million Internet users in India, of which less than 150 million are women. This bias is much sharper in rural India. In rural India, barring a few social-good programs, men still control access to devices, and with that, WhatsApp and the rest of the Internet as well.
“This finding needs to be considered in the context of the allied finding that the ready availability of digital technologies has contributed to new forms of physical and virtual violence,” the researchers said.
They found that such violence is more likely to be directed towards women, especially those from marginalized communities. These could include unsolicited sexts, sex tapes, rape videos and blackmailing.
“A key finding is that there exists widespread, simmering distrust, hatred, contempt, and suspicion towards Pakistanis, Muslims, Dalits and critical or dissenting citizens amongst a section of rural and urban upper and middle-caste Hindu men and women,” they added. “WhatsApp users in these demographics are predisposed both to believe disinformation and to share misinformation about discriminated groups in face-to-face and WhatsApp networks.”
And who’s sending these?
Although people in India already buy into various prejudices, this doesn’t mean that they all act on them. Some messages are more successful than others, and the researchers also looked at the impact of different messages.
“Amidst the flow of hundreds of messages, the ones which stand out are those that convey a sense of immediacy and those that can and do have shock value,” the study showed. “During elections, or during incidents of cross-border military action, simmering sentiments become high-intensity situations where the quality of disinformation and propaganda becomes immediately inflammatory.”
“In these circumstances, the chance of long-term discrimination turning into physical violence against particular demographic groups increases,” the researchers said.
You may have sighed in frustration at a message in your family WhatsApp group, wondering why anyone would send that. As it turns out, the researchers also wanted to answer the same question and several reasons emerged, ranging from the naiveté of older users who choose to believe messages forwarded by known and trusted individuals, to the belief that it is a civic duty to pass along information about (even unverified) suspicious activities, and the need to be seen as a local “expert” by sharing local information.
In some cases, the emotional disturbance felt by users on viewing a clip of spectacular violence or overwhelming content (train or road accidents, harm caused by natural disasters) impelled them to share them with others and/or discuss them within their networks.
Misinformation spreads largely due to prejudice and ideology—rather than out of ignorance or digital illiteracy.
In other cases, this kind of content contributed to a sense of emotional fatigue and exhaustion whereby WhatsApp users would forward disinformation without checking the message fully, research showed.
“We found that for most WhatsApp users in India civic trust follows ideological, family and communal ties far more closely than is reported in other literature on this topic,” the researchers added. “In a majority of instances, misinformation, and disinformation which contributes to the formation of mobs that engage in lynching and other discriminatory violence appears to be spread largely for reasons of prejudice and ideology rather than out of ignorance or digital illiteracy.”
What the researchers found is that if a WhatsApp user is male, technologically-literate Hindu, then regardless of whether they’re “upper or middle caste”, young or middle-aged, or rural or urban, they are more likely to share misinformation and hate speech. “Some user narratives in our fieldwork go as far as to suggest that this type of technologically-literate, male, Hindu user is also more likely to create and administer the groups responsible for ideologically charged misinformation, disinformation and hate-speech on WhatsApp in the first place,” they explained.
So what’s WhatsApp doing?
This is an issue that won’t go away easily, and multiple stakeholders are seeking solutions. Citing fake news as a concern, the government is calling for traceability of WhatsApp messages, but there are concerns that this would also enable snooping on all your messages. The Indian government has long argued that WhatsApp’s encrypted messaging service is detrimental to national security and has demanded WhatsApp “digitally fingerprint” all messages in India. Facebook has pushed back thus far, arguing it would undermine user privacy and turn WhatsApp into a different product.
“We’ve taken several steps within our product over the last year to help address the challenge of misinformation,” a WhatsApp spokesperson explained. “To include new labels that identify to users when they have received a forwarded message, or a highly forwarded message (such as a chain message) – as well as limiting how messages can be forwarded to just five chats at once. That limit change reduced the total number of forwarded messages on WhatsApp by 25%. We also launched group permissions to empower users to decide which groups that would like to be part of.”
On its FAQ page about WhatsApp’s steps against misinformation in India, the company also notes measures such as limiting forwards, its education and advertising campaign about fake news, and growing a local team to work with civil society and the government. It has also worked to train local law enforcement departments on how to work with WhatsApp and make legal requests for information, aside from the 20 research awards to promote studies that will inform product development and safety efforts, the spokesperson noted.
“WhatsApp cares deeply about the safety of our users and we appreciate the opportunity to learn from these international experts about how we can continue to help address the impact of misinformation,” said Mrinalini Rao, lead researcher at WhatsApp. “We recognize this issue presents a long-term challenge that must be met in partnership with others. These studies will help us build upon recent changes we have made within WhatsApp and support broad education campaigns to help keep people safe.”
Other topics by researchers who received the $50,000 grant from WhatsApp (a total of $1 million) include Social media and everyday life in India by Philippa Williams, the Queen Mary University of London (Principal Investigator), and Lipika Kamra of OP Jindal Global University, which examines the role of WhatsApp in everyday political conversations in India; another, titled Misinformation in Diverse Societies, Political Behavior, and Good Governance by Robert A Johns, University of Essex, Sayan Banerjee, University of Essex, and Srinjoy Bose, University of New South Wales, uses field experiments with WhatsApp in India and Afghanistan, to establish a relationship between misinformation on social networks, and public opinion on ethnic relations.
In India, WhatsApp is also partnering with Osama Manzar and the Digital Empowerment Foundation to train community leaders in several states on how to address misinformation. The foundation is also part of a proposal that aims to adapt game-based interventions to “vaccinate” people against misinformation, testing it with field experiments. #MohnishRANotes
