The Stoning of Taglish

this is our reaction because we have prejudice toward the speakers. we just dont take taglish—and the people who speak it—seriously and formally so we assume it's not applicable, even sacrilegious for the seriousness and assumed formality of the bible.

we just assume immediately that taglish is simply a wrong language.

taglish is a sociolect. Trudgill defines it as a lect or a variety of language that relates to the speakers' class background. taglish is a sociolect of the upper middle class of ncr, perhaps emerging through the tagalog people's convergence toward english language, and divergence from tagalog language (Giles, communication accommodation theory).

moreover, taglish, following the logic of Ross, is a non-U language usage—a kind of usage that employs fancy words and neologisms to sound more refined.

while taglish in the context of this bible translation may appear far from being "refined"—much to the dismay of pinoy bible enthusiasts—taglish nonetheless is a non-U language usage.

taglish therefore, perhaps most plausible in its onset, is an unconscious attempt of the middle class to be in conversation with the upper class.

the "hate" that this translation generates perhaps comes from the pinoy's typical dislike and prejudice to the rich, and by extension, to those who appear to be climbing up; this is hate transferred by association to a language (i.e. taglish)—in other words, linguistic prejudice.

(although such hate could also come from those who hold language-purist tendencies, those who accept that language is dynamic but ridicule borrowings and dialects.) .

point is, the disapproval that this draws is a residue of class struggle and superiority complexes.

perhaps the true concern that we should be asking—instead of which language should The New Testament be translated to—is the question of to whom the book is written.

is it supposed to be read by a select few or by as many people as possible?

vast majority of scholars believe that the original language of the New Testament is koine (κοινή "common") greek. this leads to a strong argument that it was written in everyday language, and for the masses.

fast forward to 2020 philippines, who 𝘢𝘳𝘦 the mass𝘦𝘴? what 𝘢𝘳𝘦 the everyday language𝘴?

if we are so pure in language, and quick to label codes in the path of creolization as "bastards" of one our motherland's linguae francae, then, i am reminded of that scene in which the teachers of the law and the pharisees brought in a woman, who was caught in the act of adultery, in front of the Christ to be stoned to death as it was according to the law of moses.

JESUS wrote on the ground with HIS finger, "𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒."

i dont know. but perhaps in other words, 𝑦𝑢𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑎 𝑔𝑦𝑜𝑑 𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑎-𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑜𝑟 𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑎-𝑚𝑖𝑥-𝑚𝑖𝑥 𝑛𝑔 𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑎𝑔𝑒, 𝑦𝑢𝑛 𝑦𝑢𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑎𝑦 𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒.
