the real hard rule of writing is that anyone who says you can 'skip around and write whatever scenes you like and then write the boring bits that connect them later' is lying to you. do not do this. writing in chronological order* is your friend.

Hi! Anon again! Oh, well at least I'm in good company with the analogy I shared! It's not easy carrying around all the ideas for this fic - each shouting 'Pick me! pick me!' And I can only realistically write one at a time! 😤 😩 I definitely need to work on my organization/planning skills as well! I agree regarding editing, it helps me a lot! What I do to keep myself on track when I’ve got new ideas popping up and clamoring for attention is to immediately write them down (whether that means writing down a vague sketch of an idea, or to write down several lines of dialogue/description, or even a full scene) so that I don’t forget them. If the ideas are for the fic I’m working on, and I have a feeling they’ll fit in the chapter I’m writing, I’ll add them to the bottom of the doc I’m working on so that I remember to incorporate them.

If the ideas are for later on in the work and don’t fit in the chapter I’m working on, I’ll add them to a separate doc where I keep all of my miscellaneous ideas for the work. Not all of these ideas end up working in the story, but I still like to save them in case I can cannibalize them for another fic (shh, don’t tell anyone I do that!). Likewise, if the ideas are for another fic within the same fandom, I'll add them to a doc that has a running list of all of my ideas for that fandom. Those usually end up becoming oneshots, but I sometimes am able work them into longer fics.

My method makes for a lot of docs sitting on my computer, but it’s manageable if I make sure to keep all of the doc names consistent. And it means I never forget an idea (unless I forget which doc it's in)!

That said, since most of my writing comes from cobbling together all of my ideas into a (hopefully) coherent chapter, it means I write each individual chapter in chunks (and very often out of order), which I have to then string together and arrange once I’ve finished writing all of the scenes the chapter needs. That usually requires going through the chapter and determining which sections need some short transitions added between them to make them flow better and which are fine with just using scene breaks.

It’s a bit of a messy process, but I function much better when I can get all of my ideas out and arrange them as necessary than I do writing everything in perfect chronological order. In fact, one of my college English professors taught a concept he called “shitty first drafts” (based on Anne Lamott’s writing method), which is essentially just getting all of your ideas down on the page—whatever you can think of, no matter how crappy you might think it is—so that you’ve got a lot of ideas you can play around with as you develop your drafts. I’ve stuck with that idea ever since with every form of writing I’ve done because it’s how my own brain functions and is what works best for my own writing method. So there’s nothing wrong with being messy and having to work your way through a flood of ideas! Professional writers do too. :)

When I edit, I always do multiple sweeps of the chapter, and I look for different things to correct on each sweep. That usually includes copy edits (spelling, grammar, punctuation), characterization (does the dialogue sound like it fits the character? Do they use this gesture/body language? Is this emotion/expression of emotion appropriate?), sequencing/timeline/consistency, clarity/precise language/use of active verbs/sentence variety/parallel phrases and clauses/general trimming, etc. I also make sure that I’ve covered everything I need to for where I want to start out in the next chapter. Things still slip by, but making multiple passes eliminates the number of issues that would slip by if I only went over the chapter once. And, to help myself spot issues more easily, I usually change the text to a different font so that my eyes don’t get lazy and skim over issues because I’ve been looking at the same font for so long.
