#but yeah qi yan is just as horrified by chuntao’s death as the reader

*jwqs spoilers*
as much as i think that the whole xiao-die concubine arc was unrealistic, i do appreciate it. it brought to light how much qi yan would do for her revenge.
up until then, we hadn’t really seen her do anything that would directly hurt jingnu to the point of heartbreak. the previous arcs kind of lure you into a false sense of security, and you start to think that jingnu could be more important than revenge for qi yan.
and then the xiao-die concubine arc happens, and you realize the lengths that qi yan is willing to go to. it really cemented the fact that jingnu was a pawn first and foremost for qi yan. sure, a pawn that she ends up falling for but a pawn, nevertheless.
i think my favourite scene of the arc was probably when qi yan killed the old woman who had been taking care of xiao-die. because when she indirectly killed chuntao, both you the reader and qi yan are horrified. however by the time the old woman is killed, the reader becomes kind of desensitized to the violence that qi yan commits.
it was only when i looked back on it, is when realized how horrific it was. qi yan killed the person who was the only reason her sister survived. same goes for when she went to kill xiao-die’s son. i expected her to try and kill him. when she let him live, i was shocked.
tldr: the xiao-die concubine arc was when qi yan entered her villain era.
