OKAY so I’m still not done reading the whole story (I am currently gonna read the second book by Anthony C. Yu), so I don’t think I can comment much on that. But I can talk about this: The way I see Erlang Shen handling these newfound feelings is him in complete denial. He would rather die than admit that he has feelings for Wukong, so he buries these feelings deep down, ignores them the best he can, and treats the crush as a one-off thing. With time, he’ll get over it soon. Besides, these feelings could interfere with his line of work and he can’t have that. Basically, he becomes emotionally repressed. After all, a romance between a yao and a shen is forbidden as u say B) Also this might seem cringe but I’m gonna say it anyway, would Erlang Shen have felt a small hint of relief when he knew Sun Wukong would never love him back? After he carried out his uncles order of burning down Huagoshan, Erlang Shen knew he finally burnt down that bridge of possibility. That Sun Wukong would hate him for centuries to come. Sun Wukong might forgive, but he will never forget.

LISTEN--I just find the concept of Erlang getting an unspoken crush on Wukong after their death battle SO FUNNY
