Companies might want more qualified developers? ☕

I just got off a call from my apprenticeship. They discussed how I am close to finishing and I only have the interview to go over my entire portfolio and then I would be done. Great!

However, they asked me if I wanted to do the degree apprenticeship, a Level 4 apprenticeship, or if I wanted just to quit and continue working at my company as a Junior Software Developer. I said I wanted to take a break for now before starting the degree and for other reasons (I will explain later).

The guy, called Sam, said that my decision was fine! He also added that the apprenticeship company is really pushing for more students to take on the degree apprenticeships because more developers, managers and higher positions in the IT sector are getting degrees or something similar and now companies are looking for more qualified people including developers.

He said that there are more experienced developers in the market, e.g. have been programming for years, but not a lot of them are ‘qualified’ per se; for example, having a degree, diploma, or accredited certificate. The apprenticeship company, QA, obviously wants their students to ‘stand out’ so they’re pushing, but not forcing, their Level 3 students to do the Level 4 apprenticeships.

What does this mean? 🤔

First off, it's discouraging for the self-learners out there. But don’t let that discourage you though. Yes, this is kind of like an “oh…” kind of news, I definitely felt like that when Sam explained everything. Personally, I can't start the degree apprenticeship since I have to leave to live in Canada around the Spring/Summer of 2024 and the degree lasts 18 months (which will end in October/November 2024), so there is a very high chance I will have to decline their offer.

The job market is different everywhere. Yes, there is a ‘general’ idea of what most companies want from a developer they're looking for but the job market in the UK can be entirely different than the requirements needed in Brasil for example.

Even as that, you can still make it by being self-taught. It’s not impossible to be a developer/engineer by being self-taught, it just means you would have to work hard to prove to employers/clients (for those wanting to be freelancers out there) why they should hire you and not the person with the degree. Show them what you have that they don’t. No degree doesn’t mean no job.

So, no matter what, keep working hard. You can still make it even if you didn't go through the traditional university degree route. And even if you’re doing a degree right now towards being a developer or engineer or UI/UX designer, don’t forget to get work experience - either with a company or freelancing or personal projects. Don’t complete your degree without some experience - that goes for any university student to be honest.

In this case, it is asteroid 5252 Vikrymov, named in honor of Viktor Aleksandrovich Krymov, deputy director of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy for many years. It is said that his energetic work contributes to the success of the Institute. Vikrymov was found at 18 degrees Pisces.

In Edgar's chart, asteroid 5252 Vikrymov is in eleventh house (friends, groups) Gemini (communication, mental energy, ideas, learning) at 14 degrees.

So what does Vikrymov mean? If I had to guess, possibly where and how we apply analytical skills, the power to theorize, or where we have unflagging energy to do so.

What I've learned about job searching...

... is that it's a LOT different now than it was 3 years ago when I was looking post-grad school.

I've also learned:

Switching fields is basically impossible unless you know the right people OR you're willing to invest in retraining to get the right degree/certifications and even that is a gamble without experience.

I'm losing out to more qualified candidates for jobs that I'm already OVER qualified for. Meaning, hiring teams are snatching up these super overqualified candidates for cheap in entry-to-mid level positions. This does not bode well for younger folks trying to attain entry-level jobs.

This also means that I'm not getting to the interview stage for jobs that I SHOULD be applying for because I don't meet 100% of the skills/experience they are looking for. This leaves only lateral career moves and again it seems jobs are hiring over-qualified people for these roles.

Personal referrals are not always a leg up in the competition.

A lot of 'remote' jobs are really hybrid and mean you need to live in the general area of the office. OR they expect you to hop on a plane every few months.

Everyday I understand why my father started his own business and I wish I had the inertia to do the same.

The longer I've been unemployed, the more undesirable my resume becomes.

This process is hell.

Slightly once had a family. His parents died when he was too young to properly remember them, but growing up in the orphanage he always liked to think that he remembered them—and knowing that he’d once had them was almost enough. What memories he did have were probably mere figments of his imagination, but as long as he believed in them, they were real…and it made many of the other kids jealous that he knew so much, which was a great bonus.

In truth, he doesn’t know half as much as claims to, just in general. Back in the orphanage, he was always coming in last in grades on schoolwork, even when he would sneak and copy answers off the other boys. He considered himself lucky to have escaped with Peter before they could ever force him into the public school system (or subject the public schools to him) but that would change when the Darling family moved to the island.

Wendy and her brothers John and Michael were assimilated into the group as easily as if they were the missing pieces they had always been waiting for, and they were especially what Slightly had been waiting for: a family with parents that were willing to adopt a stray child. The lost boys are his brothers first and foremost, but having real parents (not the play-pretend of Wendy and Peter as mom and dad) was an opportunity impossible to deny. Of course, they put him into school, which he struggled through, being held back a few grades, until he was old enough to drop out despite Mr. and Mrs. Darling’s protests.

Slightly is far from being the brightest bulb in the box, and he’s well aware of that, so he tries to make up for his short-comings by simply pretending to know everything he doesn’t know. Honestly? It gets him by pretty well. Most people don’t tend to challenge those who agree with them, so as long as he concurs with the prevailing wisdom of the moment, he’s golden. Unfortunately, he’s also often too quick to get the first word in that his opinion on a matter seems to change as soon as he’s contradicted.

The only thing he’s ever really been good at is music; he’s been playing any makeshift instrument he could get his hands on since he was young and carved his first wooden whistle while unsupervised at the orphanage. (No, he wasn’t supposed to have that knife, don’t worry about it.) Finding real instruments to try out was a lot easier after he was adopted. Percussion, strings, woodwinds, he’ll try anything he can get his hands on.

He composes and performs his own music locally, and is hopeful that his deal with Couffaine Records will get his career off the ground, because without even a high school degree he’s honestly not qualified or fit for much else (beyond settling down and being somebody’s trophy husband—that’s always on the table.) He wrote the lyrics to some of his songs, but the strongest ones have always come from his partnership with Cubby. Cubby has always been the poet, so his words and Slightly’s melodies combined make for the best music.

Since they were too young and short-sighted to steal their official documents before running away, Slightly doesn’t actually know what’s on his original birth certificate. He knows his first name, because that’s what the orphan wranglers called him—Sylvester—which was too much of a mouthful for any of the kids, so they just called him Sly and eventually Slightly. But damned if he remembers his parents’ name. He’s a Darling now. (No take-backs!)

Another of his closest friends outside of Peter, the lost boys, and the Darlings is of course Tink, who he also grew up alongside in the orphanage until she was adopted. She’s always been protective over the boys, but as the only girl in the group for the longest time, they also had reason to be protective over her. She was more of a sister than anything else. Slightly still likes to think he’s Tink’s favorite lost boy despite his generally being nobody’s favorite.

Though he’s realistically far from the best role model a boy could have, Slightly has worshipped Peter Pan his whole life and finds it impossible to tell him no. He would go along with every hare-brained scheme and adventure Peter wants to have, even if they have to break the rules along the way. He almost fears as much as respects him, never wanting to disappoint him.

Despite being generally full of bravado and conceit, Slightly is secretly pretty insecure about his obvious imperfections and much of his seeming unfounded confidence is really an unconscious defense mechanism.

The Connotation of the Highest Level of Human Civilization

When human civilization enters the most advanced stage, there will be no laws, no countries, no currency, no marriage and family, and no forms of identification such as ID cards, passports, driver's licenses, work permits, medical licenses, judge certification, professor certification, and so on, and there will be no various types of business licenses.

Readers may think that this is impossible. Without laws, without countries, without any identification, the whole human society will become chaotic. For example, if there are no driver's licenses, people who don't understand traffic rules will also drive on the road and will inevitably cause traffic accidents. 

I want to say that we cannot imagine the form and operating mode of the highest level of human civilization society with the current consciousness and living environment of people, but we can imagine that when everyone is selfless and exudes the nature of truth, goodness, beauty, love, sincerity, and trust from within, all the disputes in the world will be melted away. The unskilled driver will not drive on the road because he loves others more than he loves himself. 

Perhaps some readers may think that people cannot completely achieve unselfishness and selflessness, but in fact, when the traditional production and life mode of society will be replaced by the Second Home mode, people will find that the more unselfish and selfless they are, the more they will enjoy the joy and beauty of life and LIFE to the greatest extent. We have proven this through 14 years of this production and life mode in practice. 

Without countries, laws, and marriage and family, will everything become chaotic? 

No, when we emulate the Thousand-year World mode, we will find that the higher the degree of freedom, the more civilized people will become. The more restrictions and constraints, the more people's selfishness, greed, and opportunism will be stimulated. Moreover, when tens of millions of Second Homes are born on the earth, people will choose to enter these homes to live in, and all the homes will operate according to universal values and the way of nature. All people on earth will become members of this big family of homes, and no matter what they do, whether it is power generation, farming, clothing production, education of children, shepherding on the grassland, or technological innovation in the laboratory, people from all walks of life will become members of the Earth family. Without currency and private property, everyone will freely use their intelligence and talents, and all the issues of food, clothing, housing, transportation, aging, and death will be resolved by this big family. No one would want to keep currency or have private property.

Each Second Home has 30 to 300 members, and each member rotates to work and live in another home for three years. When people around the world start to flow freely, there will be no more national, party, religious, or cultural barriers, and any turmoil and war will no longer occur.
