COC day 21 - WLW

Hello hello

I'm back again with the On thin ice universe. (Yes, it's a universe now.) This is from the second unreleased sequel, which is about Agatha and Niamh, because who doesn't love a good lesbian figure skating/hockey AU?

I was gonna share a different snippet but my computer decided to be a bitch and deleted half of my fic. So that's fun. 👍👍👍

Anyway here's a bit of what survived my computer's unnecessary cleanse.

There is a hockey player in my gym.

Technically, it’s not my gym. And technically, hockey players can use it, but it’s one of those unwritten rules that they don’t. This training complex is plenty big—there are two gyms, one in the basement and one on the first floor—and there’s absolutely no reason for a hockey player to be using the figure skating gym.

Yet here she is, on the stationary bike, pedalling away. Someone from the women’s team, I’ve no idea who she is. (Even if I did interact with the hockey players—which I don’t—it’s hard to tell them apart under those helmets anyway. Probably if she was in her gear, I wouldn’t even be able to tell that she’s a woman.) (She’s not in her gear; she’s wearing basketball shorts and a loose-fitting black cotton t-shirt, her brown hair pulled into a tight bun that must hurt her scalp.)

I clear my throat. The hockey player looks briefly in my direction, but says nothing. Maybe she’s new and no one’s told her where the hockey gym is?

I clear my throat again. “The hockey gym’s downstairs,” I say. The girl looks at me again, an annoyed expression on her face.

“Anyone can use this gym,” she says. Oh, an Irish accent? What’s an Irish hockey player doing in San Diego? (Does Ireland even have hockey players?) (Well, clearly, they have at least one.)

“Yeah, but—” I start.

“Don’t let me disturb you,” the girl drawls out. She’s got a really unpleasant demeanour—typical for a hockey player, I suppose. That’s why I don’t like hockey players. They’re unnecessarily aggressive.

I sigh and drop my stuff off in the far other corner of the gym, as far away from the scowling hockey player as possible. I was so looking forward to having the gym for myself, and now she had to come here and ruin it.

I sigh again and get on the treadmill. Better get this over with.

you've always felt your emotions more deeply than others. you have a lot of feelings and it's not uncommon for you to start tearing up at random times throughout the day when you see something that elicits a strong feeling from you.

kie says it's because you're a cancer and while she's so true because you are the stereotypical emotional water sign, you're not sure how much of your mental state is because of your astrological sign or if you're genuinely a few screws loose in the head.

you remember hiccuping and sobbing into jjs shirt for the better part of half an hour- staining his sleeveless tee with your tears all because you saw a seagull missing a foot and he seemed to be running slower than his other seagull friends. your only relief from the obvious heartbreaking situation was jj softly murmuring comforting words in your ear, his strong arms around circled around your waist, your body snuggled onto his lap. the scene isn't uncommon for the pogues to see. the two of you have always been more affectionate than most.

all of this leads you to where you are now, curled up on your bed sobbing. soft sad music playing in the background making you sob even more. you put on a brave face with your friends but in the sanctuary of your own bed is where you can finally let your feelings free.

seeing pope and jj kiss hurt you more than you originally thought. your mind keeps replaying the scene of the two boys kiss, their lips moving together sensually, saliva being shared. you're sure that if you hadn't interrupted them, the kiss would lead to something more and involving less clothes.

what if when they start dating they drop you? what if pope isn't comfortable with how touchy or affectionate you are with jj and he stops your cuddles or what if jj doesn't want you to hang out alone with pope because he knows you two kissed. what if they stop needing you because they have each other?

the thought makes a sob crawl up your throat and fat tears roll down your cheeks. you feel like your head is going to explode from how hard your crying. you need them like air, you felt like that even before you and pope kissed and before you realized you're in love with jj. you need them because they're your closest friends- they're the family you so desperately crave because your own doesn't care much for you and you're so scared if they start dating each other then they won't need you.

it's why you give out your love so freely, the feeling of being needed by people is something that is so deeply and inherently buried in your bones. when someone needs you and you can help them, it feels euphoric. a psychologist would probably have a field day with you because if you're not needed, what good are you?

"i'm really confused after our kiss" pope mumbles, nervous to look at jj in the eyes.

"good or bad confused" jj responds.

"is there such thing as good confusion?" pope asks, eyebrows furrowed and lips pursed. "i didn't think i was gay or bi or whatever and yeah i think some dudes are hot but like i've never wanted to kiss them but i wanted to kiss you!! and then we kissed and it was like... nice but different and i couldn't help but think about gracie and how she and i kissed and how good that also felt and then i felt guilty and-"

"pope, take a breath" the maybank boy utters, effectively cutting off popes rambles.

"i liked kissing you pope. i never let myself be attracted to dudes but it's you, ya know?" jj continues.

"but i also understand wanting to kiss grace. i... well i want to kiss her too." he finally confesses. he's never said his feelings for his grace out loud before.

pope gently stumbles over to where the maybank boy is perched on his bed, he leans in to grab jjs fidgeting hands, grasping them in what he hopes is a comforting hold.

he leans forward so he can give jj a small peck on the cheek. reassuring him that they're ok, that they'll make it through whatever turmoil they're feeling right now.

jj grabs popes face and brings him in for a deeper kiss, lips and tongues touching. it makes jjs stomach burn with desire. after several minutes or maybe hours of kissing, he's not sure, pope reaches up and pulls on jjs soft blond tresses, tugging on the boys hair a little to pull him away from popes lips. they both let out little gasps when they disconnect.

"have you heard of polyamory?" pope asks jj... a shit eating grin on his lips.

Clara as Haruspex is breaking my heart especially! The way you wrote her being friends with the kids - how Artemiy was once with Stakh, Grief and Lara - and how she has a foreboding feeling she won't belong with them once it is all over, because her role is to protect them, not be one of them! Rat man still found a way to be mean my girl 😭 Also she and Grace are so sweet. Wanted to say that Grace's name (Ласка) in Russian has double meaning: 1) weasel (animal); 2) tenderness. Do with that as you will~

Also Daniil (both of them) is so good as a changeling. I loved that quiet moment he had with Clara on the stage, where they say how odd it is to play like that. Love the eyes of the "twins" being what sets them apart, too! Raven feels like he wants to be a bad guy, but can't quite bring himself. Regretful plague that is also a dead man who is alive but only because the sickness is. Snake being so gentle and kind and seemingly having some sort of planning he doesn't fully share even with the reader. Also Daniil speaking Hebrew! I gasped when I realised. It's also a fun contrast to him only speaking in Latin in the game, especially if we still to see him as Jewish. Makes me really want to see how you'd write bachelor!Daniil! Want to take a look inside his head! I know what I shall read next.

Artemiy having a worst imposter syndrome out of all of them because of coming back home where he was supposed to take on his father's role and finding the man who was a founder of a project that could be called Artemiy's life work is comedy gold. Also his little sister literally living the life he refused! 10/10 no notes. Artemiy and his unfun coming-home-to-steppe party! 🥳 Roots, Rain and Reflection is secretly a comedy.

Thank you for writing this amazing role reversal, don't think I will be able to get it out of my head.

Haruclara truly deserves so much, she doesn't fit into the Termites despite being a kid herself, half because of the way she was raised and half because of the nature of the story and the separation of Healers and Bound. While also having messy connections with the other two Healers. I really wish I could have more Grara but this is primarily p1 focused so the Bound's role is limited (the amount of Yulia/Rubin/Lara/Aspity I had to cut- istg I was so excited to have an Aspity and Artemy interaction on day 6 but it would've been too long) I will keep what you said in mind though! thank you ^^

Changeniil has been so write, he keeps so much of himself hidden, so getting to reveal those small bits of him like in that theatre bit are great. The hands and the eyes being the main things to distinguish the twins Dankovsky is fun because those are two things Pathologic focuses on a lot, though I will say that there might be more later on. The Raven is a miserable wet beast, the idea behind the twins has been that different bits of Daniil are split up, so and what's fun about that is that it's Plagueniil that has the idealism. He's a fucked up guy held together only by spite and disease but he cares so much it hurts him. The Snake is also a creature, truly, he knows his plan, Raven knows his plan (and doesn't like it at all), and I know how it will fail, the narrators being unreliable is such a fun part of patho. I always write Daniil as Jewish (because he is to me lol) but specifically Daniil I think fits with Hebrew because it is a revived language and as a guy who is trying to defeat death I think it would suit him (also revived language and revived Daniil was an intentional choice) I will say though, idk how well my old writing holds up bc my writing got a lot better while writing roleswap so go at your own risk lol

Finally, Bachtemy, a dearly beloved fool <3 he used to have a much bigger conflict with Daniil about Daniil not being who Artemy expected him to be and that being a lot more angsty but then I started writing that scene and it turned out gay so nice. There's a lot about Artemy I'm planning to go into in chapter 7 so look out for that. Artemy is also 100% the character I get to make the funniest, truly the comedian of the cast, I am putting him in the blender as I write this.

tell us more about elephant gun, what kind of fic is it and where can we find it?

sooo, elephant gun was this amazing fic written by Cat (ilikeorangetoo) back in 2014, then deleted in 2015. what I'll tell you now it's what i remember from being obsessed with the story lol but it's been so long that i could be mistaken about some of the details :/

anyway, elephant gun was a dystopian kind of thing, where this virus had basically taken over the world and lira (the female character) and harry met amidst the chaos. lira lived in this city that was "separated" from the rest of the world and it was the only place that hadn't been infected, whilst harry arrived from a different city that had just been "destroyed", so let's say kinda like a refugee (?). their story was incredible and the way they got close to each other and fell in love was just... unbelievable. but it wasn't JUST that, it wasn't just about them falling in love. it was also a out the plot twists and all the details we were finding out in each and every chapter. like i remember sooooo vividly the scene where harry took lira "outside" and she found out that on the other side of the walls wasn't as bad as she was led to believe. then at the end, omg, we kinda thought harry was actually the bad guy, but then he wasn't? and then there were soooooo many lies and so many things to find out... and omg I just remember that it was something so intense and fun and emotional to read! and then... Cat released "a moment of grace", which was the story told from harrys pov ahfuajhdja God Cat was like, wayyyy ahead of absolutely everyone with her writing, and I feel like everyone who used to read her stories back then felt like that.

unfortunately, though, Cat deleted her blog in 2015 and with that we lost all of her writing. that's awkward beat, pregnant pause, elephant gun and a moment of grace (all incredibly amazing!). she came back later with a different blog, but she mentioned many times that she didn't think she'd be able to finish the story and apologized for that (we didn't get to the end, btw, so there are manyyyyyyy unanswered things that still haunt me to this day lol).

so yeah... it's crazy if you think that 10 years later that fic it's still in my mind. that tells you a lot about the impact writers can have in someone's life (I always think about Cat when I'm writing something lol).

not only cat, but many other writers. like, if you ask me, personally, someone who back in 2014 was only 22 and had not too long ago started reading fanfics in english, that's basically when the best fanfics were written. they were reallyyyyy different from what you'll find today – which is natural bc, yknow, it's a whole different generation. i understand that now that wouldn't be people's cup of tea, but thankfully for me, a lot of my favorites are still around <33 so i can always go back when i want to read a fanfic or get some inspiration 🥰 or when im missing elephant gun and i have to deal with the frustration of never getting to know the answer for so many plot twists ahdujabdjahdkh

5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi-chaptered stories, which would it be and why?

Definitely the Picture Perfect series. Dark Side was the first fic I wrote when I picked up writing again in 2012. I hadn't planned to write any sequels, but readers wanted to know what would happen with Tony and Loki, so while I was attending courses at the University of London Union, I started planning out what would happen in the sequel while finishing up Dark Side. I remember very clearly sitting on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed in a hostel in Dublin, Ireland, typing out the epilogue to Dark Side and crying my eyes out (my travel companion was sitting on the floor in the middle of reading Dark Side). It's honestly my firstborn of many babies, lol.

6) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?

Well, I've actually kind of done that. I deleted four fics in 2016. I deleted them bc I'd hit a really bad writer's block with my fics and shut down all my RP accounts (all 13 of them), and I'd hit a wall with the fics and felt bad for leaving them just sitting there unfinished. They were Fools Rush In, a Frostiron AU based on the movie with fem!Loki; Just a Fool (In Love with You), Frostiron canon divergence set some time after The Avengers, during The Dark World/Iron Man 3, but compliant with neither; The Flame, a fic that kind of starts ThunderFrost but is ultimately Frostiron that's a kind of original AU; and Second Time Around, a WinterFrost modern AU, where Bucky (who's kind of a combo of Bucky/TJ Hammond), a disgraced vet and former drug addict, is struggling to get his life together and hooks up with Loki, a guy he met on a dating app. I had plans to continue to work on all of these. I just haven't gotten around to it.

12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?

Probably Loki. I love writing Tony and Bucky, but if you look at my fics all of them have Loki in it in some capacity. There's a lot of Loki in me, Many facets of his personality match mine. Maybe writing him is a way for me to deal with that.

13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?

Jane Foster. Cuz I hate her. lol

Bucky moved to the short front gate at the edge of the yard and paused to fix Loki with a teasing look. “Are you under the impression I grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting?”

So I have a WinterIron Bodyguard AU on my to-do list. Tony needs a bodyguard bc his parents were killed in a car accident that two detectives don't believe was an accident. Fast way forward to Tony being in danger in some situation in some place, and Steve, Bucky's friend and one of the detectives working Tony's parents' case, calls in a favor to a friend to help them out. When I was planning the fic out, that friend was originally going to be Coulson. But in one of the first reworks, I changed it to Natasha.

Idk. Only bc I think I'd find collabbing difficult if the other person and I didn't have similar writing styles or couldn't agree on tone or dialogue or even just the plot. And I've seen how collabbing can go very very bad. The only person I ever really wrote with was my ex when we did RPs. And that didn't end well lol.

also curious about 19 in regards to sbs, how do you plan a 180k fic??

uhhhhh poorly, haha. but this is a fun one to get into, so here's some insight into the very messy process.

19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

sbs was originally plotted to be only 30k and end where canon left off, so it definitely wasn't all planned from the beginning. i wish i still had my original outline, but it was just an email draft that i later deleted...

basically, i had some simple ideas that i bullet pointed into chapters. it went: jupeter feeling each other's pain as kids -> nureyev realizes juno is his soulmate in murderous mask -> juno realizes they're soulmates in frp but still leaves -> they feel each other's pain in s2 -> they reunite and get back together -> some fun drama with the broken leg and dark matters bot in s3 -> nureyev gets captured by someone and juno is able to rescue them bc of their connection.

at the time i started plotting it, i assumed we'd know nureyev's debt backstory before i finished (ha) so i didn't even plan any of that. then once i realized we weren't gonna get that reveal in time, i came up with my own idea, went back and retrofitted it into the story, and everything sorta... spiraled from there.

it's also important to know that a good 60k of sbs was added in editing while i was in the process of posting it, per revisions me and my beta thought of lol. a lot of that 60k was me seeing problems in the fic, fixing them, and then having to go back and add set up for those fixes.

in general, A LOT of retrofitting and working backwards happened. for example: okay, i want nureyev to be captured by new kinshasa bc it would add drama, and him being rescued by his creditors is a good way to show how powerful they are. but why? who would turn him in? well, his creditors know his identity, but they wouldn't do it, they need him. someone who works for them, then. how? maybe they bug him. who would be able to do that? oh, maybe a security guard who has access to his comms. but why? well, they want his bounty. for what? maybe to pay for medical bills. OH, i can link that to the soulmate thing bc pain... etc etc.

tbh, working backwards is such a useful strategy and i recommend it to everyone though unfortunately it's way harder to do when you're writing something serialized that isn't finished in advance.

this is also where a beta definitely comes in handy, too. there was a (bad) version of the fic where nureyev had a big crying breakdown in what later became the vacation chapter, and my beta pointed out that it just didn't work at all bc it left nureyev with nowhere to go in terms of being emotionally vulnerable in front of juno. she was totally right, and that feedback resulted in me cutting the breakdown entirely and moving it to after the ship crashes on the desert island.

long story short, sbs is in many ways a franken-fic and not at all my best showing when it comes to planning, so... probably not really much there that's worth emulating :'D beyond "get lucky and get a wonderful beta who expects a lot out of you" and "if you do add a ton of stuff that you didn't originally plan, remember to add set up for it too".

Blue Lions: Well... that certainly confirms the theory that the Childhood Friends don't accept Dedue very well aosjsj Sylvain is the only one who doesn't seem to have a problem with Dimitri no wonder he's so willing to work on his womanizing he's the only friend who isn't judging him (bc Ingrid HAS to not like that Dimitri has Dedue as a retainer and even if it didn't sour their relationship completely it had to have put some strain on it. No wonder she and Felix are seen together so often aksjsj). ALSO ANNETTES A SWEET ANGEL.

Ashe also hates ghost and as someone who thinks they'd be adorable together I love the idea that they're the couple that go see a disney movie while the others go watch horror (but they still get scared by the wind that night and call Mercedes to come take care of the ghost aksjjs).

Leonie's is exactly how I thought it'd be aksjsj don't have a lot to say except she's the big sister of the group and has for sure punched Lorenz in the face

Marianne and Claude are at the bottom bc they're my favorites and I have a lot to say about them akshshs

Ladakdjsj why does "long rides" make me think of a dating profile?? "Hi my name is Claude Von Riegan, I love long rides on the beach and tactically scheming as the sunsets. Pick me and I'll let you grasp any part of me you want."

Anyway SO pumped to finally have stuff coming out about Claude aksjsjs after what feels like years of just getting scraps we're finally getting some gosh dang FOOD and we DESERVE IT

His dislikes are interesting, like its so clear he doesn't trust the gods at ALL kasjjs and he clearly has a reason for that which I'm sure will come out in the main plot since its all about the church who are just a bunch of people blindly following Seiros akdjs

(Also who's gonna tell him he's in a fire emblem game and is just as subject to the rng gods as the rest of us? Leaving things to chance is the underlying tagline of the combat system cause sure you have a 95% to hit but there's still a chance you won't 🙃)

Love that he likes poetry, he is the guy who can rehearse shakespear by heart but mostly just spouts the existential stuff but will whip out a real romantic verse when the moments right (unlike Lorenz who only remembers the romantic stuff). Definitely is the guy who writes haiku jokes using haiku's and it drives everyone else crazy. Also I hc that he means long rides on his wyvern and not a horse bc ever since I saw that he can become a wyvern rider I can't not think of him as one akssj (I'm calling the wyvern Goldy the Golden Good Boy of the Von Riegans, Goldy for short, becauze it makes me laugh akdjsj.)

Also wtf does planning feasts mean??? What does planning a feast entail?? Is this just a medieval way to say he likes to party??

Ok calming down I am SO fascinated by Marianne, cause she clearly has so much story to her and I for one can't wait to find it all out. Cause she's so different from the other nobles, all of them are quite confident and loud (in personality and color) but shes the exact opposite, and we don't even know what her crest is so we can't figure out who her birth family are and what happened to them that made her get fostered by the Edmunds. And the Edmunds themselves are just another hole because how do they treat her? I cant imagine its good? But perhaps it is and whatever happened to her birth family is why she's so depressed and lacks self confidence? Akjdkss Ok I'm just rambling now I'll stop but long story short I'm hyped to play Golden Deer and see what her relationship is with the rest of the house xD (especially Claude bc they have such different viewpoints on the gods and the church so their supports are gonna be interesting aksjjs)

I know for me personally I don't interact with fics the right way I guess. I always heart them and I send asks to tell the author I liked them but I don't reblog them usually. Ah yes, i didn't think people would read the tags, i tend to word dump on there lol but yes I've been thinking of deleting for about a year and every time i go to do it, i hold back because i have 4 years of memories both good and bad on here and the good definitely outweigh the bad but it's hard to not want to be on here but also obsessively coming on multiple times a day. I even offloaded the app and here i am again not even 48 hours later.

There's nothing wrong with giving them a heart and moving on, but I usually have spam likes and then no reblogs, comments or asks. I remember someone asked if they could reblog a bunch of them all at once and that's fine. and I get it, sometimes my brain is pfttttttt and i can't think of anything to add to the tags or reblog when i read a fic so i understand! I'm shy too so i know it's scary and I've been working on it recently too lol

I'd definitely rather have interactions than likes but I know people are shy or maybe they're new. but sometimes i feel dumb (?) for begging and pleading people to comment or send an ask over and over again when i post. And then I end up wondering if my latest fic sucked that bad and end up making it private out of embarrassment (?) and the cycle repeats.

And i noticed this shifting at the end of 2020 'cause like that post i reblogged said, it used to be a pretty good ratio of reblog to likes and i'd get a few asks here and there and then as my blog grew (I'm almost at another milestone) the interaction and reblogs etc drastically dropped. and sometimes something will have 30 reblogs and like 7 are mine :( and it's never been about the numbers before because i never let anyone know how many followers i had until my announcement post but yes it's disheartening.

aksbsjsk having a Moment and my brain wants me to just fucking. Delete the fic. I'm not going to, but it's really annoying

Should've let the chapter sit longer before posting (I usually wait like four days but I only waited two) but... alright I'm just gonna rant here. There's spoilers but I expect people to just ignore this anyway

So:

Everybody's OOC compared to canon. That's... the whole thing. I started it before Cejk and I even finished the anime and made a ton of shit up to fill the gaps

The big themes of the story are the way others shape us and feeling human. There's a bit of a subtheme of family because of the previous, and also a subtheme of communication and what happens when it breaks down

In this, Shouto, Tenko, and Neito all have some level of communication issues but for different reasons. Shouto was involuntarily isolated and so didn't have much of an ability to learn, Tenko was unintentionally neglected so he didn't have the opportunity either, and Neito is... half of what my current freakout is about

We already know what happened with the Todorokis, I already make what happened with Tenko pretty obvious, and then... nothing was on the wiki for Neito's family, so when he made his way into the story, I just made shit up. Since the other two have already been addressed, it was time to address him.

Neito lashes out at Tenko in ch5, then apologizes. He tends to assume the worst of others. Where does that come from? Well, I had to explain that. To go with the influence theme, I figured it'd have to do with his family. There's hints I'm dropping, but basically the Monomas are a dumpster fire and hiding a lot of shit. They may be around each other all the time, but they never have meaningful conversations or resolve their issues. So, Neito is the same

And Tenko? Tenko isn't used to having people around, so he doesn't think about talking to them about his problems. His mind defaults to thinking they're not there even when they are. Adding his feelings of inadequacy to the mix and Neito's tendency to disrespect others' boundaries when it suits him...

Yeah. We'll get to see that later. That one is Tenko's breaking point (and perhaps, the OFA reveal). It's kind of a rework of I Need You (You Belong to Me) because I can't stay away from doomed friendships apparently. (But don't worry, Katsuki and Izuku are still gonna get their chance to fall apart too)

I've been building it for a while, though I can't remember exactly when I had the idea.

However, the kidnapping is going to be Neito's breaking point. He's right on track. But that means I had to really fucking push him the last few chapters

The cooking scene in 16 is just the return of his trauma over being trapped in the conflagration zone (it was already shown in an earlier chapter but I can't remember the number). He doesn't know that's what it is, which is what's causing that conflict. He and his dad just... communicate past each other constantly. I was trying to hint at that during the dinner scene too

And. Yeah. Sometimes shit that seems unrealistic for a character to say is shit that actually gets said in real life (How Did We Let This Happen To Us? was really weird to write bc of that—seeing the words written really makes them feel fake). I hate that fucking line I threw in there because it's so blatant. I wanted to keep things more subtle but it explains his bad person complex (that I've been making obvious since day one with all the comments he makes describing himself as selfish and being bewildered when Shouto called him a good person) and really gets him where I want him to be. He needs to make the mistake he's about to make for the plot to work and for everybody's arcs to progress, so I have to make sure he'll be there

And like, yeah. I guess I'm woobifying and projecting onto Neito a bit but I'm doing that to literally everyone in the fic if that's the case. Most of the crap I'm pulling in here is less direct than Unbelonging, Disbelieving or How Could We Let This Happen To Us? so there's that I guess. I use fanfic to vent bc it strips me of the incessant need for everything I write to be perfect, which I can't seem to get past with original stuff

I'm a little mad that Neito took over the fic despite never planning for him to be included (probably need to add a Neito centric tag at this rate; maybe I'll do it next time I update) but the twist I have for him was too good not to use

I'm a little afraid of the number of people reading this fic though??? And the lack of feedback so I can't tell what they're actually thinking doesn't help even though I appreciate the kudos alshsjs
