I know we have Cobra Kai to make up for it now but I will never get over the fact that the first scene in KK2 was Johnny almost getting murdered by his sensei in a parking lot and then this just... Never gets addressed again. Like the next scene is the post prom shit and I remember the first time I watched it as a kid feeling that whiplash of a tone shift and just being so fucking confused.
A 17 year old kid gets choked out in a parking lot by the guy who we as the audience know is a huge piece of shit, but who everyone in universe just thought of as this pillar of the community type. A war vet who decided to come back and teach kids, which to anyone on the outside would seem like a very noble thing to do. Then this man loses his shit and almost kills his supposed favorite student and no one does anything about this. We don’t see any other adults step in, it’s just Johnny on the ground, the other cobras in shock, Kreese with his hands covered in blood and broken glass, and then Nothing. Daniel and Mr. Miyagi just get into their car and drive off and it’s never spoken of again. We know more about the aftermath for Kreese, a secondary antagonist, than we ever learn about what happened to Johnny.
I understand Johnny was the bad guy in that movie, but holy shit that was a child we just saw almost killed on screen can someone please check on him??
(Edit): I hate this scene for a number of reasons, a lot of them are just adult me wanting to hug him, but even from a technical writing perspective this scene sucks. It’s a huge loose end in the story that just never goes anywhere. Outside of me thinking it’s a dick move it’s also just bad writing. There was no need to add this scene in as some sort of ‘oh the bad guys get what they deserve’ thing, because they already lost in the first movie. That’s it- the end, the hero beat the villain, story over. This was a massive over kill moment that either shouldn’t have happened, or needed a properly written conclusion to end his story arc. Daniel and Johnny didn’t even need to be friends at the end, but Something should have happened. I’m glad we got Cobra Kai out of it but also holy shit.
